Good morning one and all.

Tea. Need. Tea. Now

:tea: :tea: :tea:

Ahhh now that's better.

Now to prepare a pan of porridge. It's going to be a hard day helping out a friend today so the slow release energy of porridge will be necessary. I'll wager that my savoury porridge (with salt, black pepper and butter) won't be very popular though. :cheesy:

:bringcoffee: Good morning :)

I see our friends from across the pond have already been on this morning! Nice to see you again Chrisbutch...we've missed you. :rrose: And Incubus....I'll take some porridge if you leave off the pepper :eating:

It's hot as blazes again here today...and had trouble sleeping again last night. Ugh. I'll be glad when this heat wave breaks and we get back to normal temperatures. Sounds funny when I'm moving to Florida...but we don't have air conditioning here and it's been in the 90s...so it's pretty sweaty and yucky around here these days! Also, no beach or pool to go splash in...which makes a lovely difference :beachkids:

:linecook: Gonna' do a cooked breakfast, cuz lunch is going to be cold sandwiches for sure! How about omelets...just tell me what you like...mine will be mushroom, onion and cheese...with hashbrowns and bacon (and some turkey bacon for Lips :) ) Fresh-squeezed orange juice maybe? And I got some lovely peaches at the store yesterday...so those can be peeled, sliced, sprinkled with a little sugar and cream over the top. :girleating:

Hope you all have a wonderful day!

And :lips: to my :alarm: baby ...

Good Morning Everyone,

It is hot as hell down here in Florida...I went swimming for two hours yesterday and I ended up with my second sunburn this summer...My makeup is going to look funny with my red shoulders, hehe...

Lisa is off today, so I am happy, I just have to run up to the school and drop off my transcripts and hopefully make an appointment to see the financial aid counselor so I get everything going for school...

Have fun all, and I am leaving plenty of cold beverages behind...

It's still hot, hot, hot here....how would everyone feel about a cold supper of build-your-own sub sandwiches? I can put out all the meats and cheeses, nice fresh rolls, and of course all the condiments and pickles and lettuce and tomato and such.

My homemade potato salad is yummy, plus cole slaw, tomato-cucumber salad in a nice vinagrette....fesh frruit salad for dessert.... :eating:

I am adding some fresh lettuce, croutons, dried cranberries, shredded cheese and salad dressing to Jo Jo's delicious sandwiches...A turkey with Swiss cheese sub sounds delicious and thank you!!!

Lipstix, you should try Starbuck's Light Mocha Frappuccino, it has 150 calories for a medium and is very refreshing...kinda like a chocolate milkshake....but with coffee...Hehe..

Hope you all had a good day and to Jo Jo, Lipstix and anyone else living up in the North, keep cool.....Hopefully the heatwave you all are having goes bye bye soon...

Good Morning Lipstix,

I always hit the DD on my way home from my mom's house. I love their French Vanilla iced coffee with nonfat milk. Starbucks was my friend in Orlando...After working 12 hour days, I had one cup to start my day and one half way through my work day. My fave drink from them is, the Vanilla Latte, iced and hot, with nonfat milk...I just bought their Italian Roast coffee to brew at home, and it isn't as strong as the French Roast but very good. Living in Orlando for over 7 years, I could always find a Starbucks, but here in Palm Coast, there are only two. One is in a SuperTarget and the other one is an actual store, which is about ten miles from my house...

Have fun today and try to keep cool,

Zimmy

Good morning Everyone,

Sending plenty of ice water to our friends in the North....Breakfast, will be light and refreshing. I am thinking of waffles, toast, iced coffee, iced tea, soda's, juice and milk and fresh fruit to go on the waffles. That should be just enough to make us happy without making us feel stuffed.

Have a good day all and I am going to find a good song to slowly wake us up...

Zimmy

For all of us 80's music lovers on here, enjoy...This is the Cover Girls and their hit, Because of You...dedicated to the heat wave that is making all of us hate the summer, hehe..

Morningstar, I hope the AC is working well in that truck of yours...cuz it's gonna be another scorcher.

I had all the windows wide open all night with fans in a few to draw in as much cool night air as possible...then got up at 6 right as the temperature was starting to climb and closed them all, dropped the blinds, drew the drapes and tried to pretty much seal the cool air in here. :giggle: So far, so good...it's already toasty outside but we're holding steady at 77 downstairs. I'm crossing fingers it stays down there awhile. Luckily this heat wave is supposed to break for us tomorrow with thunderstorms and the temp about 10 degrees cooler. I'll be glad to see it :cheesy:

i am not sure yet if i am changing or not...the new one is kink-aware and specializes in GLBT, but considered "out of network "by Blue Cross :(

the old one might be "out of network," too. First six sessions covered by EAP program, not sure what will happen now

so far my insurance has been staggeringly unhelpful with this!

i would come out...but i have a history of letting the chips fall where they may...i also like to be really offhand about it and refer to it casually with an air of having expected people to already know. People who would not normally be all that cool about it find themselves behaving as if they were cool about it just because i so totally seem to assume they will...can be funny esp. in the hotbed of religious right republicanism in which i live

Most kind of you m'dear...I'm still guzzling tea and feeling decidedly gippy (Brit speak for rather nauseous). I hope you have a marvellous Friday.

Incubus your nauseous do you know what kind of tea is good for that, peppermint will settle your stomach and so will pepto bismol as well.

WEll, good afternoon to all the kitchen dwellers!! had that lousy internship site again. all I did was look over documents that were previously scanned int the computer in patient's files and make sure that they were there, HOW BORING!! I think I am going to complain about this site to the school. I need to be able to do vitals and such which is what I learned!! Not a happy camper at all tonigh and dead tired!! My eyes are bleary from looking into that screen all day. I hate being a medical assistant for sure. Nursing school here I come!!

Hope you are having a good Friday,

I had to take my youngest niece to school this morning and came back home around noon. I finally had my first cup of coffee around that time.

I am thinking another cup is in order to keep me awake.

Hope you all are having a good day,

drip coffee is considered an inferior method- next to the french press coffee connossieurs like percolators best...it's not ancient, it's classic!

Welcome AtLast :rrose: ....your percolator question made me smile.

Way back about 100 years ago I was bartending at a tiny, rough little bar in the middle of Wyoming. Lots of ranchers, some miners....tough place. I'd start work about 5 p.m. and first thing I did was to put an ancient percolator on, no matter the weather. Seems a couple of the old ranchers had land spread all over the place...and they'd stop at the bar on the way to do their last drive around before heading home. Several would order "a cup, a cow and a calf." :cigar2:

The cup....percolated coffee, so strong you poured it out and cut it off.
The cow...a fifth of whatever they drank (usually Jack Daniels).
The calf...a pint of the same...that was for the drive home.
Yea...they were some tough guys...and I'd hate to see their livers.

Good Evening/Early Morning Incubus,

Your welcome...I would say like a regular cracker, no cream in it. We call them Saltine crackers over here or see if you can find some Soda crackers. They are plain so they won't hurt your stomach. When was I sick in April of last year, the only thing I could eat was oyster crackers, water and oatmeal cereal.

Good to read that you are feeling a little bit better,

Good day Kitcheneers, I hope everyone has fun plans for their weekend. Today's plan here involve a friends birthday celebration, Sparkle weekend on Canal Street in Manchester http://www.sparkle.org.uk/ and curry at Akbar's. All in all it should be a marvellous day.

If you take a piece of Ginger Root and cut some up and steep it in some water, you will have a nice ginger tea that will help settle your stomach quite nicely...

also wanted to let folks know that Catnip has a practical purpose for humans as well as kitties....Catnip is a natural muscle relaxant....so if you take a bit of your kitty's nip and steep it in some water..you will have a nice tea that will get rid of cramps..etc...I have used both and can attest to the miracle wonders of these natural remedies....

Manchester is the North West lips, but just about South of where I am in Blackpool. We do have really quite a good public transport system here dependent on where you live. I have it good here. Good job really because I'm not a driver - I;m all for green cycling power but Mancs. is just a little too far to cycle nowadays (once upon a time it was easy!) :sunglass:

Good evening all :)

It's :bbq: for dinner tonight...london broil, chicken kabobs with onion, peppers and cherry tomato...corn on the cob...potato salad....mmmmmm :girleating:

Okay kitchen friends...big request here...

I just got an email from the realtor saying the bank just did their appraisal, which means the paperwork is now finally on the correct desk and moving forward...so I could use all your good energy, prayers, white light...whatever ya got! :rrose: We're hoping to get approval of our offer and a successful closing, so I can get moved down to my sweetie. :cheesy:

Hope you've all had a wonderful Sunday. My mother called this morning and wanted to take me to lunch...so we hit the salad bar at Ruby Tuesday's, did some shopping, then finished hauling wood out of my basement and up to the curb (that's how I recycle :) ). Time to sit and relax a little now.

Thanks Lips! :)

The wood was lumber and leftover molding from my office renovation. I had piled it all in the basement rather than hauling it out into the snow, and it had been sitting there ever since. :seeingstars:

I live on a busy street, and I have found that I can put virtually anything out at the curb and someone will stop and pick it up. I think of it as the ultimate recycling....out of my way and into the hands of someone who can use it. :)

OH so you can put anything on the street and someone will pick it up that's nice to know!! I'm going to watch some tv and then its bedtime for me..been very tired lately and don't know what it is attributed to? I guess being on 1200 calories a day for so long takes a toll on the body or its school for a year that has been intense but all I know is that its bedtime early for me.

:linecook: Breakfast is on...waffles, fresh strawberry topping and real whipped cream (cuz it is Sunday, after all)...eggs cooked to order, bacon and sausage, and a fresh fruit salad. :eating:

I had a nice sleep-in, something that rarely happens, so I'm feeling good today and ready to tackle more packing. :)

I am trying to be productive today...going to get all caught up on work, and already have the garbage out to the curb (a bit early but if I wait until tonight I may forget), got laundry going and dug out some rubbermaid tubs so I can pack a few more kitchen things.

Getting the woodpile out of the basement (which probably upset various spiders and other creepy crawlies I'd rather not think about) has made it much more cleared out down there, and I bagged up another bagful of junk and dragged it out to the curb as well. Bit by bit, I'm getting there. It's amazing how much stuff accumulates in 9 years...

Hope you all have a great day :rrose: and :lips: to you sweetie...I hope yours turns out better than the start has been :stillheart:

I ended up making risotto and having a glass of wine...something I rarely do, but it just felt like the evening for it. I'm been pretty productive...more home stuff than work, but some of the work stuff too. Seems like there's always more to clear out...

Don't feel bad Darkcrystal...I've had a couple boxes of old paperwork that needs to be shredded riding around in my trunk for about 3 weeks now. :giggle: If I wasn't feeling pooped I'd go get it and shred while I relax and watch TV....maybe....we'll see :)

Hope that internship starts going better Lips. I know a lot of places use interns for all the mundane tasks that the staff wants to get out of doing...not the point of the internship since you don't learn much that way....but it's pretty common I'm afraid.

It occurred to me that I never posted the risotto recipe for you Lips...sorry about that! Do you still want it?

Hope you're all relaxing and have your feet up. :)

At my mom's house it was around 92 before the humidity kicked in. It was hot enough to where, my mother and I were sitting on her screened in back porch sweating...I came home and put a tank top on.

I would definately say something to the college about this internship.

so sorry your internship is lame! you should report the site to the school...when i have interns i am totally not allowed to give them grunt work- they are there to have the librarian's experience, not a clerk's!

and this librarian had a great day lol- my boss was on vacation all last week so it took her the whole day just to catch up on her e-mail...i left at 2 for a dr. appt so i never saw her!

(not that i don't love her and secretly crush on her a lil, but she does have a way of trailing extra work behind her whenever she visits my department!)

K here you go....

There's about a zillion ways to make risotto because you can customize it however you want, but I'll give you the basics and you can play with it.

In a saucepan, bring to a simmer 1 quart of stock (can be beef, chicken, veggie...whatever you want. I just buy a good pre-made one at the store). Season it with salt and pepper until it tastes right to you.

As the stock is heating up, take a large, heavy-bottomed pan (with a wide base is best) and pour in a couple tablespoons of good olive oil. Then toss in up to a couple cups of whatever you want....chopped onion, garlic, zucchini, meat, mushrooms, whatever you like. Saute it around until any onions are softened and meat is browned.

Then, pour in 1 cup of arborio rice (the kind of rice is important...regular rice doesn't come out the same). Stir it around and cook until it's just barely a tiny bit browned. Then...stand back a bit....and pour in 1/2 cup of dry white wine (and some in a glass for the cook if you like :cheesy: ). Stir and cook until the wine is evaporated - which will be fairly quick.

Now...you'll have 2 pans going...a saucepan of simmering, seasoned stock and the wide, shallow pan of arborio rice and other "stuff". You're going to add the stock to the rice, but only a ladle or two at a time, stirring constantly. So....ladle....stir.....keep stirring....when most of that stock is absorbed, ladle in a couple more.....stir....keep stirring.....when most of that stock is absorbed, ladle in a couple more....and just keep going.

You're going to cook the rice for about 20 minutes, stirring constantly and adding just a little stock at a time, until the rice is as tender as you like, and virtually all of the stock is absorbed (and you may not use all of the stock in the pan).

Once it's cooked, you can stir in some fresh chopped herbs if you like, or a couple handfuls of fresh grated parmesan, some even like a squeeze of fresh lemon juice...all up to you.

I don't think I ever make it the same way twice, but it's always good. Tonight's had onion, garlic, zucchini, and fresh parm, cooked in chicken stock. Yum! :girleating:

Breakfast this morning is fresh blueberry pancakes (or plain pancakes for those that prefer that....heck I can throw in banana slices if anyone prefers that too...I'm flexible like that). Also eggs cooked to order, and patty sausage....

Yum! I am starving this morning - only had a home made milkshake and cornflakes for dinner last night. I think I could eat two steaks and half a dozen eggs for starters. LOL!

lipstixgal, I will remind you to put in that call about your car around 8:00 - they should be open by then. For your safety, you need to get that repaired.

:bringcoffee: Good morning everyone :)

I brought my big cup for coffee this morning...and steak and eggs sounds wonderful. I'll add some fresh pineapple (cut into one of those cute little pineapple boats with oars that my son loves), and red seedless grapes as well.

Looks like it's going to rain today...sky is grey and it's quite a bit cooler. I won't mind a bit, except that once again I probably should have mowed this weekend. :giggle: Seems to be my usual pattern!

I've been working away on the house stuff...sorting out things I want to take with me from the things I really don't need and would rather not pay to move. I've gotten rid of sooooooo much stuff it's unreal.

Lips, if you're planning on a big out-of-state move, I'd recommend calling movers now. They'll come do a walk through of your house and give you a detailed estimate for free. I'd also recommend looking at the big name, reputable companies....in my research I came across an absolute ton of horror stories with people getting ripped off. I'd rather pay a little more and actually get my stuff there. The advantage of getting the estimates also is that it can help you decide whether you want to do some pruning of stuff (like I am) or not. For example, I am a big reader and literally had 6 bookcases, each 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide, stuffed with books. That costs a TON to move, because books are heavy. I decided to donate my books to a library in a poor part of town...they'll put some in circulation and sell others at their annual book sale to raise money. With the money I save from moving them, I'll get a kindle...and have less to dust. :cheesy:

Alright everyone...I better get to work. Hope you all have a great day! :byebye:

:lips: to you baby.... :love1:

Good Morning Jo Jo,

If you have an iPhone, they have an app now called iBooks that allows you to take the books with you, but without an additional device.

When I moved to Seattle, I donated clothes, shoes and purses to a church missionary and gave the rest of my stuff away. One of my old employees at the bookstore, got my tv and dvd player.

HOpe you are having a good day,

Zimmy

Good Morning Everyone,

I am finalizing my plans to take the kids to the movies tomorrow and then to St. Augustine on Friday. I am loving my iPhone, I just found an app for St. Augustine through iTunes. No maps to carry, I have everything I need on my phone.

My mom called this morning and she found a bed for me. Woohoo, no more sleeping on a air mattress...

Have a good day,

Good Evening Braedon,

I loved it. I have never laughed so hard in my life. I would definately recommend it. I had a blast today. We ended up going to my stepdad's grandmother's pool, since it was starting to sprinkle and we stayed until 130pm and then we went to have lunch. There were three teenage boys checking out my friend's 15 year old daughter, and we couldn't stop laughing at them, they were being very obvious. I had her laughing at me on the way home, I was singing, "I Like It", by Enrique Iglesias featuring PitBull. She was ducking down in my car as I was singing...hehe...

Have fun all, tomorrow is my niece's birthday party and I still have to go find her a birthday card. I am taking all of the stuff I bought her, and putting her brother's name on it.

I also bought a bathing suit today...The first one in nearly 15 years. Thankfully, my friend's daughter was with me and my two nieces and she helped me pick it out....Thank goodness for Target...

See you all tomorrow night!!!

Anyone have any Bailey's Irish Cream I can add to my coffee?? My roommate has spoiled her little boy so bad, that he hasn't stopped crying since she left for work this morning. My nieces and nephews have never done this. He is used to sleeping in her bed with her, and since she has had the last week off, she has let him sleep in her bed all night. I am about to call her and tell her to come back and get him and take him to his grandmother's house.

I am off to go loose my mind thanks to her,

Morning, kitchen dwellers (f)

Mr. Strutt and I took Katie to Busch Gardens yesterday and she had a blast. The weather was great (hot, but no rain) and I got a bit of a sunburn, but nothing too serious. We didn't get back until 10:30 last night and my daughter passed out cold on the way home. That was one seriously tired little girl :beddybye:

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend (f)

Its in my house :|. I think I will go and get some iced coffee from Dunkin donuts now could use some right about this time.!!

Hi everyone :)

Finally home, sitting on the couch with my feet up. Sounds like everyone has been busy...hope you're taking care of yourself Incubus...that sounds very painful. :seeingstars:

Scoote is right, I have a crazy story...

My mother is terrified of bats...and lives in a big old farmhouse in the country. I woke up early this morning and went downstairs to use the bathroom...only to see a sheet wadded up along the bottom of the door and a sticky note on the door that said "Do Not Open Bat Inside."

Went to find my mother...who told me that the bat had gotten inside about 2 a.m. and she had trapped it in the bathroom and, rather than open the window and let him find his way outside, sprayed the room full of Raid bug killer. She said the bat was in the shower, laying on the floor...and was waiting until a decent hour to call the man down the road to come remove him.

I offered to take care of it for her (cuz I'm not terribly worried about bats). So...I tiptoe into the bathroom and find a tiny brown bat huddled on the floor of the shower...about as big as a mouse with wings.

I folded up a hand towel, tossed it over him and scooped it under so I didn't have to touch him...walked down the road and went to toss him into the grass. Well...he wasn't dead, and grabbed onto the towel so his wings were spread out, but he wasn't moving. I laid the towel on the grass in the shade, just in case he could make his way to a safe spot. Meanwhile, my mother is halfway up the road jumping and shrieking.

Well...at breakfast I hear the whole story...evidently there were 2 bats that got inside. One found its way out the door, but the other got trapped in the bathroom with her and she sprayed him, put the sheet and the sign on the door....and then went out and spent the rest of the night in her car...leaving my son asleep on the couch and me asleep upstairs.

Yes, that's my mama.

I went back to check on him later, and he was gone...hope she didn't poison him completely. Poor thing was probably just looking for a mosquito snack :eating:

lipstixgal
07-17-2010, 05:34 PM
That's a funny story Jo and the poor bat was sprayed with raid probably just knocked him out that's all. It takes a lot of poison to kill a bat. Anyway, glad to hear you are home safe and sound!! Have a nice night

i wish the library would allow me to wear a pair of bats dangling from my earlobes...from June to November Houston is mosquito Mecca

Good Evening Everyone,

Well four sunburns and six weeks worth of memories later, my oldest niece and nephew left around 6pm to go home with their mom. My oldest niece, Hailey, loved all of the Hello Kitty stuff I bought her. Her best present came from her dad, he bought her a digital camera. I am sad they left, but I know they will hopefully be back down at Christmas time. My ex sister in law, kept picking up my 19 month old nephew and playing with him.

I am exhausted and headed to bed,

Leaving some Abuletia hot cocoa for anyone who would like some,

mawning kitchen dwellers... [_]D

well here i am enjoying a nice quiet sunny morning on the horsey farm in ... Yancyville,NC .....
JustJo....... that was a funny story...... lol i remember living way out in the boonies of western NY.. on the edge of a small town there.... and lived in a nice A frame home that over looked a large pond....
well we had bats that lived up in the peek of the roof....... one day found one hanging from my living room curtains.... soo i did like you... threw a towel over it and released it outside.
im not afraid of such things..... not even snakes.... but now spiders.... well thats a different story.. lol
now in the city , my mom few months ago had one in her bedroom, how it got in there is a mystery, no open windows it was feb or march i think.
soo here is my brother coming to her rescue , wearing his fire man gear.. and trying to hit this poor thing with a broom.... he did kill it . and gave it to animal control.. geezz.... i told her he should of just threw a towel over it.
and it was small as well.

Good morning everyone :) (and afternoon to Incubus)

Bit of a leisurely Sunday here...the kitties had their usual can of tuna to start off Sunday morning, so there's a lot of purring and face washing going on now. They all share a plate full and are quite polite about it...just 4 little buddies when there's tuna involved! :giggle:

Lots of bats here Lips, but they're tiny...and wonderful little bug hunters. I actually like to watch them swoop around and catch all the mosquitos and such. They can get rabies, it's true...but you would see them acting strange, like flying around in the daytime if they were. My son loves bats...one evening a couple years ago we were at a friend's house for a BBQ and there were about 50 bats swooping around catching bugs as soon as it got dark. My son...about 10 at the time...went out and stood on top of their woodpile so he was up higher, and standing in the middle of the area where the bats were working. They swooped and flew all around him, coming within inches but never touching him. He was delighted. :cheesy:

I'm with you morningstar...I can deal with snakes, and bats and rodents don't bother me...but spiders (and grasshoppers...heck, bugs in general) creep me out! Not sure I'd wear bat earrings though darkcrystal :giggle:

I'll be back later....but hoping you all have a good day. :rrose:

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Hope you all are having a good day so far. For some reason, Elijah, my friend's little boy, won't sleep in his crib. His mother isn't sure why and has been letting him sleep with her. She asked me lastnight what she should do, and I told her, that she needed to stop letting him sleep with her or she was in for a world of trouble once her second baby is born next month. She looked at me and said ok, but ended up taking him in her room. I put him in his crib for his nap today and took a shower..When I was done, he was sound asleep in it.

I am off to find some iced coffee, this sunburn is killing me.

I just have a house in NJ that's it!! So a Carvel is a chain of stores that makes Ice cream cakes and sundaes and cones its great, gotta come to the Northeast to try it sometime.

Carvel, you don't have Carvel it famous for their Ice Cream soft serve as a matter of fact so you don't live in Florida but visit there, you must have a nice life unlike mine. I just have a house in NJ that's it!! So a Carvel is a chain of stores that makes Ice cream cakes and sundaes and cones its great, gotta come to the Northeast to try it sometime.
