We finally saw "Spy" last night!

I love Melissa McCarthy, and she was hugely funny! But....I felt the movie over-all was a spoof on the improbable "one person takes down the crime ring" spy movies of the past. Maybe that's what it was supposed to be and i didn't get it, but i was a little disappointed anyway; Something funny but original would have been nice for a change.

As for the language...most people don't talk like that, and it is really jarring to the senses. During those times she was spewing her swear words, i became disengaged from the movie...it just wasn't nessasary to go on like that.

Watched "Air Force One" on TV in French ( no subtitles ) How the Hell did Harrison Ford EVER make a career as an actor? The man has only 2 facial expressions: granite or panic... and if you're only understanding every fifth word of dialogue it's that much worse.

If you let the trailer run through, it will show some behind the scenes training for the dogs. There were multiple dog characters and several stand ins for each character in the movie. It's interesting to show how some of the scenes were designed.

If you continue to let it run, it will have a public service announcement regarding Belgian Malinois dogs and the prevention of 101 Dalmations Syndrome. I think this is very important. If you have time, please watch!

This was the perfect movie to watch on Independence Day, for a variety of reasons. I loved it and shed many a tear throughout.

Casino was on TV last night....

I don't know what it is about that movie, but if it's on, I'm watching it!

Funny thing about it, it's such a long movie that I often forget entire parts and what happens next. It's kind of cool when there's that much detail to a film that you can watch it numerous times and still see something new...

Okay, here's my beef with MM XXL. I never saw the original but appreciate a little tilt in the sexual objectification game. I thought this would be a fun movie but even when the guys are the ones on display, women are still being put into compromising situations. Just because someone goes to a strip show does not mean they automatically want someone's crotch ground into their face. Seriously. I'm not talking in the general direction of someone's face. I'm talking a couple inches away to actually being ground on. Sometimes with hair pulling and head yanking. I need to know you a little better than that for that shit to happen. I was really wound up about it when I left the theatre but I've calmed down now.

Yes, this is me calm.

There was, however, a really nicely constructed swing.

:eyebat:

Terminator, however, did not disappoint. It was FANTASTIC. Now, for the sake of transparency, I've been a Terminator girl since day one. Love the series. They did a remarkable job blending younger/older Arnie battling together and the stunts are stupid crazy good.

Amy

The ultimate eulogy to a talented young woman who had her demons stoked by those closest to her. Not an original story. Unfortunately.

I'd recommend seeing it only if you are/were a die-hard fan of Amy Winehouse. Otherwise, wait for on-demand or Netflix and then only a bargain matinee because it's more like an E True Hollywood Story than a rich documentary. But, then again, she wasn't around long, but she did leave a mark.

The Long Good Friday is a classic British gangster film. It stars Bob Hoskins, Helen Mirren, with Pierce Brosnan in his first role (a small role, but a good one).

The film's about a successful British gangster whose organization is imploding on Good Friday just as he's trying to forge a bond with an American gangster. It's very good. The storyline was complex at times with some twists—a good film and worth watching.

This is based on a gruesome true incident which was very disturbing in itself!

When disgraced New York Times reporter Michael Finkel meets accused killer Christian Longo (who has taken on Finkel's identity) his investigation morphs into a game of cat-and-mouse.

Straight Outta Compton.

I loved this movie. The writing was excellent and the music fantastic.

The GF does not really like rap and also really liked it.

Very worth seeing. It was like a time capsule of the period.

I wish the excesses of the police of the time were also a thing of the past but we know that is not true. It felt so shameful watching it, just as it does now.

From Rotten Tomatoes, with a score of 90%:

In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country. When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation. Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A., Straight Outta Compton tells the astonishing story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war. -- (C) Universal Pictures

Based purely on the action, it was fantastic. As a fan of the franchise, it's not the same without Jason Statham and I kept focusing on the new guy's teeth.

He can fight and he's got a sexy voice but I really want to hold him down and put braces on his teeth.

Plus his dad must be a shit spy to get kidnapped and ambushed as much as he does in this film. No wonder they only gave him 791 euros.

I liked it because I knew what I was getting into. It's an Adam Sandler film. It's fun and childish and is going to have good to great graphics. I was not disappointed. I even enjoyed myself quite a bit.

This, on the other hand......this disappointed me. Actually, Samuel L. Jackson disappointed me. He's too good of an actor to be playing these shit roles and too much of a badass to be believable as a weak and clueless politician.

I might be scarred for life.

You can watch it right here or on youtube.com .

Disclaimer: I have not watched the entire movie but very intrigued.

What is it that makes us human? Is it that we love, that we fight ? That we laugh ? Cry ? Our curiosity ? The quest for discovery ?
Driven by these questions, filmmaker and artist Yann Arthus-Bertrand spent three years collecting real-life stories from 2,000 women and men in 60 countries. Working with a dedicated team of translators, journalists and cameramen, Yann captures deeply personal and emotional accounts of topics that unite us all; struggles with poverty, war, homophobia, and the future of our planet mixed with moments of love and happiness.

Watch the 3 volumes of the film and experience #WhatMakesUsHUMAN.

The VOL.1 deals with the themes of love, women, work and poverty.

It had really believable mountain-climbing sequences, particularly the shots that made you feel like you were looking over the edge of the mountain.

I had read Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster by Jon Krakauer, several years ago.

Saw "Pan" in 3D. It had lots of exciting visuals, they utilized the 3D pretty well, and the costumes were great. I really liked the character Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara). Sadly, they spent almost no time telling the actual story. It was very thin on plot, and kind of boring, really. Most of the story is told in the trailer. The movie was mostly action sequences and scenes where you felt like you were on an amusement park ride. This is _not_ a Disney film, BTW, it is Warner Brothers. That Disney-type of magical wonder was lacking in all but a few brief places.

This movie apparently was a break-out hit at Sundance. It also got an 88% Rotten Tomato's critic score and 85% viewer score.

I enjoyed it a lot. It is about 3 young geek friends in high school that are obsessed with 1990's hip hop (the main character wears his hair like Kid'Play did back in the day) and they get routinely beat up at school. They are growing up in Inglewood.

It breaks some stereotypes but still has others.

One of the three friend is a butch lesbian. I must admit, when I saw the three friends at first, I thought she was a boy but she was a boi. The other two friends totally accept her, which was awesome to see.

A funny scene is one in which, every Sunday, her grandmother takes her to church and they try to "pray the gay away". Meanwhile, one of the church praying circle is a hot young woman that the young butch can't keep her eyes off of. It is a funny and sweet scene.

A stereotypical theme is that of older guys that are drug dealers. The high school protagonist (Malcolm) gets involved with the dealing (not his choice, I must emphasize).

Malcolm's goal is to go to college. His HS guidance counselor puts him down when he says he wants to go to Harvard.

I was rooting for Malcom and his friends.

Good little movie.

This is a television series and not a movie (if there's a better thread for it, let me know and I'll post there), but Steven Universe. It's challenging to describe, because there's so much to it, and I don't wanna write a giant ten-paragraph tl;dr dissertation. So while there are a few spoilers in it I'll let The Mary Sue give you the 101. (http://www.themarysue.com/steven-universe-101/)

I know, I know. Beyond being a TV series, it's a cartoon on bloody Cartoon Network. I was all "I R ADULT I DUN WANNA WATCH NO CARTOONS" too, but then my friends got me started watching it and I'm bloody glad they did because this show, man, this show. Then I went and started getting other friends of mine watching it. And then they went and started getting, like, their friends and spouses watching it and shit. It's kind of like the corollary that completes the Maturity Paradox. Like, you know how most "mature" stuff is juvenile in the extreme? Steven Universe is kind of the opposite of that. It's a family-friendly cartoon that comes in quarter-hour episodes and yet it's easily one of the most mature shows on the telly, both in how it approaches people and relationships and how it approaches fiction. It's rich with things like foreshadowing, a contiguous narrative that welds all the details into a coherent whole instead of every episode ending in a return to the status quo, high-production-values musical numbers that are a delightful treat when an episode turns out to have one (a brilliant musical number was even the climax of the first season), a wonderfully developed and flawed cast of characters, storytelling so tightly wrapped and cleverly expressed that it can tell a meaningful story and then some inside of an 11-minute episode, and even the occasional usage of techniques normally found in adult fiction like deliberately unreliable narration.

I could ramble on and on and on and I'd love to but I'm gonna control myself, for now. Just... watch it. You'll be glad you did. (To keep it brief, like many shows, it takes a little while to really hit its stride, but where many shows don't do that until a couple seasons in, Steven Universe hits that stride fully at halfway through the first season--26 eleven-minute episodes--and has kept that stride going strong since. It's presently close to halfway through the second season, though new episodes are on holiday hiatus.)

Hi Cinephiles! Please remember that a great way to change the disparity in Hollywood is to support film festivals and independent filmmakers.

A fantastic program of films by and about queer women, sponsored by the Scottish Queer international Film Festival will be happening in Scotland and London November and December 2015.

Here's the info: SQIFF - Queer Women In Love / (http://www.sqiff.org/event/queer-women-in-love-shorts/)

This November and December, SQIFF is taking part in BFI Love with two programmes of films and events. Queer Women in Love is a diverse and exciting selection of films by and about lesbian, bisexual, and queer women with events across the UK. I Do? considers queerness and marriage marking the one year anniversary of changes to the marriage law in Scotland.

Part of BFI Love, in partnership with Plusnet bfi.org.uk/love.

I just watched Girl Night Stand, short film made by Jenna Laurenzo (http://www.lesbian-interest.com/girl-night-stand-a-short-film-by-jenna-laurenzo/) because Emma recommended it on her blog.

This is a 9 minute comedic short about a young woman who questions her sexuality after her first one night stand with another woman. The short is a prelude to the feature "Lez Bomb." Lez Bomb was selected for Big Vision Empty Wallet's Kickstart Diversity Program and will be produced by Big Vision Creative.

I would like to intergrate the video but I don't know how to do it because its from Vimeo.

Contrary to the ads, it's not a really funny movie. It's honest, though, and I did like it. Almost everyone in the theatre mentioned that it wasn't what they thought it was. There's a surprise star too.

Seattle has tons of filmfest however I've seldom attended them! A truly brilliant film.
You laugh, you feel compassion, and you just feel like throttling her all at some point in the movie.
This is based on a true story by Alan Bennett.
Its a remarkable journey for both.
Try to catch it when its out, you won't be disappointed.

Oh another note, I am counting down the hours now (sad I know) to see the film Carol, that is now on release here in the uk.
Tomorrow is the big day, so once I have seen the film (maybe even more than once if its as great as ppl are saying) I will give you the low down.

But have a feeling this film will meet all the books expectations.

Very good. The music is outstanding and the acting is good. Interestingly, there's a style that Spike adopted in a few movies where the colors are sharp and exaggerated making aspects of his films look almost comical in retrospect. Good film but it is not an examination nor a representation of Miles and Coltrane's musical and personl relationship.

Ok... Firstly I want to say that if you haven't read the book yet, then go see the film first.
Because to fit all that the book entails into a few hours is a challenge.

I will also say you must go and see it, purely to make up your own mind.

This film is still with me now, and I am marinading it over.
I think possibly its because I had read the book first, and was so consumed by its plot and more so the two women, their emotions & undeniable connection, that this film just fell a tad short for me.
(I may say this in haste though after a breather away from it)
But again this is only a personal view.
I don't dislike this film by any means and I know of other people who simply adore this film.
For some reason I didn't really feel consumed by it.

But don't let my review stop you going to see it.

I will say that the sets are beautiful, and the acting is exceptional.
And unlike the book the very long intro between the two women isn't as long in coming.

Perhaps after waiting a whole year for this movie, reading and watching teasers I had this so built up in my head that nothing could compete.

Please go and make the effort to see it, then at least you can judge for yourself.

I will take a break from Carol, then come back to it when its out on dvd and hopefully my view will have changed.

I hope you all love it.

Life of Crime

u2ei2EQLc2Y

Starring Jennifer Aniston, Mos Def, Tim Robbins. Based on the hilarious Elmore Leonard book, The Switch. Released in 2013 or 2014

Two small-time crooks, Ordel Robbie and Louis Gara, kidnap a socialite in a Detroit suburb only to find out that her husband won't pay the ransom because he's ready to divorce her. It was a cheesy movie, but I liked it. The acting was fun and lighthearted and I'm always ready to watch Mos Def in a film. I enjoyed Anniston and Robbins, too. I'm not familiar with Aniston's acting and will check her out over the next month or so.

Also, the character Ordel Robbie is played by Mos Def in this film, but Ordel shows up again in the film Jackie Brown when he's played by Samuel L. Jackson.

yes its me again.
so i went to see Carol for a second time this week.
i have had a slight change of heart, in that i think its growing on me.
if you are able to block out how much more detail the book goes into then its a good film.
the problem is with trying to get it to film from the book story is that Therese's thoughts are all in the book, and this is much harder to convey on screen.
so you have to just take this film as a different entity entirely.
so give it a go.

Far From Heaven. The script is rather over the top in 1950isms, but the movie addresses some important social issues - "homosexuality", racism, segregation, patriarchy, domestic abuse, conformity, etc. It's rather well acted for the most part, but I didn't think Dennis Quaid was very believable, or perhaps that's what most wealthy men in Connecticut in the 50's were like (reserved, and somewhat mechanical). Some scenes really brought out a lot of emotions. I think it's definitely worth seeing. Actors: Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid, Dennis Haysbert, Patricia Clarkson, Viola Davis, etc.

The Big Short.

It was good, but I really didn't care for it. The focus of the film is on the crooks, not the investigation. All The Presidents Men, Zodiac, and Spotlight are films that focus on finding the truth, opposed to making the crooks (or bad guys) look good. A bunch of realtors were watching the movie, too, and those loud asses were cheering on the crooks. As we all know, the little guy or the everyday guy was the big loser in the housing bust of 2008, not the crooks (banks and Wall Street).

One good thing ... A lot of people blamed immigrants and poor people for the housing bust (snort), when the real problem was the bankking deregulation in the 1980s that allowed lenders to offer sub-prime mortgages that were then re-packaged into bundles and sold to investors. They did show that. Still, I left with the feeling that the crooks were glorified. Maybe it's because of the crowd I watched it with.

So all that put together left me not really enjoying the good performances.

I'll watch it again when it comes out on DVD to see if I feel the same. I'll be interested to hear what others think about this.

I really liked this movie, but I'm a sap for David O. Russell movies. I "get" his dysfunctional people. I know them. I have relatives, friends, coworkers, and hairdressers like them. Hell, I am one of them; working class blokes trying to live the American dream.

Joy is based on a true story about single mom who's good at inventing things. There are improbable moments, but I was able to accept them.

I thought everyone was good, especially De Niro, Lawrence, and Rossellini.

It's about the love affair and marriage of Nora Ephon and Carl Bernstein. I enjoyed it, as I did the first time I saw it. Thought there were sweet, funny, and sad moments.

This movie got a some bad press when it came out. I found Ebert's review online and he came down hard on Ephron. Called her mean and said she wrote a bitter movie. He even said she should have written about someone else's marriage. Har! Bitter? (a word never used to describe a man, mind you) The only thing bitter was Ebert's review. Ephron just didn't sugar coat the bad parts of their relationship. Glad I watched it again.

Also, it has "Coming Around Again" and "Itsy Bitsy Spider" sung by Carly Simon:

I watched No Country for Old Men last night....

I was at Walmart and it was in the bin of $4 movies. Apparently it won an Oscar? I don't know what year.. it was wicked good. Its one you have to watch over again. Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin star and I enjoy them both.

The plot is kinda all over the place. But truly it was a great flick. The Coen brothers directed it and I've like their stuff previously. They tend to make loopy kind of movies...in a good way lol

I'm looking forward to seeing Hail Caesar, and here's an old one by the Coen brothers, Blood Simple (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086979/), that's worth catching, too, if you haven't already seen it.

Went to see The Danish Girl & Joy yesterday.

So firstly, The Danish Girl.
I will not say much about this film, because frankly this is a must see film.
If you don't go to the cinema very often, then I ask you to make the effort to do so.
For me personally, I simply adored this film.
The acting was exceptional, and
Alicia Vikander's performance was nothing short of perfect.
This film is so moving, I found I was totally engaged with them on their journey.
You feel what she, he and Lilly feel.
Take ya tissues because this will have you at some point wiping ya eyes.
And if it doesn't, well ya just cold hearted.

So to the film Joy.
On the whole a good film, all the cast carry it very well.
Maybe a tad too long.
I liked it, but its not one I would buy on dvd.
For me it was a case of I have seen it once, so I wouldn't want to see it a second time.

A dramatization of the relationship between heart surgery pioneers Alfred Blalock and Vivien Thomas.

I enjoyed the movie but the injustice to Mr. Thomas was a bit overwhelming to witness!

Director Todd Haynes believes love can blossom in the most improbable circumstances. Take his new movie, Carol. The film tells the story of an affair between the title character, a married 1950s socialite (played by Cate Blanchett), and Therese, an aspiring young photographer (played by Rooney Mara) who is working in the toy section of a New York City department store. They meet while Carol is buying a Christmas present for her daughter.

Haynes tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross that the connection the women make in the store is a "curious leap" that takes them both "out of their worlds."

"I think there's something so lovely about that being the way love often begins — in the most irrational, inexplicable sort of circumstances where you put yourself out there and you keep going, 'What am I doing? Why am I here?' " Haynes says. "But you keep going back. Both women do it."

Phyllis Nagy adapted the screenplay for Carol from the Patricia Highsmith novel The Price of Salt. In her early 20s, Nagy met and befriended Highsmith, a lesbian writer who spent much of her adult life in Europe. Nagy says the story is extremely forward thinking, especially considering it was originally published in 1952.

"As far as I'm aware, it was the first relatively mainstream lesbian novel to be published that included not only a relatively happy ending, but it did not include the death of one of its lesbian heroines, or one of them going to an insane asylum or nunnery," Nagy says.

Nagy notes that Highsmith initially published The Price of Salt under a pseudonym, perhaps because the novel was so personal in nature. "It was difficult for her to take ownership of it as a writer for many years," Nagy says. "I was never sure if that meant she just didn't like it, or if she was so personally attached to the novel that she couldn't afford psychically, or psychologically, to claim ownership of it until the late '80s."

INTERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS

On Therese and Carol

Nagy: Therese Belivet ... is at a stage in her life, early 20s, where she is searching for the keys to her future. She's a bit reticent; she's immensely curious, a bit like a sponge, and responds to everything with an alarming honesty — much like Pat Highsmith herself, whom I knew. So Therese is her alter ego.

Carol Aird is older, married ... and she is a melancholy creature. She is not a happy-go-lucky socialite. The circumstances of her life don't sit well with her, or comfortably.

On the elements of Highsmith's novel that Nagy most wanted to keep in the screen adaptation

Nagy: Two things. One was the radical way in which Patricia Highsmith addressed the sexuality of the protagonists in the novel as natural, as breathing — no particular thought given to what sexuality means to these women — but also an insistence on ignoring, more or less, the naysayers, which was another aspect of the novel that was profoundly radical. The second part of the things that I think makes the novel really resonate even today is Highsmith's particular view of motherhood and what makes a good mother.

On how The Price of Salt was received compared to Highsmith's other novels

Nagy: I think that Highsmith was very surprised by the impact that The Price of Salt had on publication. And even in the years, four or five years, following its publication, she would receive the most amazing letters from people — of course, they were addressed to [her pseudonym,] Claire Morgan — talking about how the book had touched them profoundly, changed their lives. She wasn't used to that. Certainly no one was going to say that [her 1950 book] Strangers on a Train changed their lives in quite that way, or even [her 1955 book] The Talented Mr. Ripley.

On what Nagy learned from Highsmith about being a lesbian in the '50s

Nagy: I think what I learned from Pat about being gay in the '50s, and from friends of hers that she introduced me to, it was a window on a very particular subset of lesbians. Pat herself, I always like to say, was like the studio boss of lesbians in that she was right there chasing women around couches and throwing them down onto beds. ... I thought at first that she was probably just pumping up her own reputation as a lesbian stud, but, in fact, her peers — the women that she chased, many of whom actually did remain friendly with her — confirmed those stories. And these women were all vaguely of the Carol Aird set.

So I felt as if I knew exactly who Carol Aird was. ... I think the married women suited Patricia Highsmith, who famously did not like to live with people or have that kind of attachment that most reasonable people after a time expect. ... With married women, that was rarely possible. So they were, I'd say, the Euro-[equivalent] of wealthy, suburban, mostly married and secretive; women who probably, in 1952, are on prototypes of antidepressants and drank a lot and smoked a lot, like Highsmith herself.

On Highsmith trying to date men at one point

Nagy: The unwholesome truth about Pat is she was a lesbian who did not very much enjoy being around other women. So the attempt to dabble with one man seriously, and perhaps a few others along the way, was to just see if she could be into men in that way, because she so much more preferred their company. Pat would've been a great member of [Mad Men's agency] Sterling-Cooper ... and really, I think, that was the formative psychological trait ... that she really didn't like women. She liked to have sex with them and she liked them to go home and shut up, but she much preferred the company of males.

On whether Haynes had reservations about being a man directing a movie about lesbians

Haynes: No, I did not. Or at least, what I felt was this was a tremendous, beautiful opportunity for me to explore this story as a gay man and as somebody who has been in love and who's been in Therese's shoes. ... I felt like I had that common and universal and poignant experience in my own history and my own memory and that's what's so unsentimentally and beautifully described in the novel to begin with. ... And I have to say, so many of my dearest, closest friends in the world are gay women and this, in many ways, was sort of like: "This one's for all those [women] who've meant so much in my life."

Let me know if y'all think this should go in the "Listening" thread.

I saw "Carol" last night in the theatre (after readin the book over the weekend).
I thought it was crap. I considered leaving but kept hoping there would be a good sex scene, since a gay man directed it (with which I take issue).
Thanks for posting these interview parts, though, Orema- maybe I'll have more compassion.

Good film but not great. I always enjoy watching DiCaprio movies but the subject matter was too thin to make this an enjoyable and riveting plot.

What ruined it for me was the pointless violence. I understood the violence in Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Django, and Jackie Brown. There was a purpose for the violence in those films (IMHO), and sometimes I even found the violence creative or clever in his films. But not in in this. The violence seemed solely for shock value. It never moved the story along, it didn't give me any insight to the the perpetrator nor victim, it wasn't creative in any kind of way. It was just violence for the sake of violence. And for three hours? I felt terrible after watching it.
