Last night we watched Match with Patrick Stewart and we enjoyed it:popcorn:

As a Juilliard professor is interviewed by a woman and her husband for her dissertation on the history of dance in 1960's New York, it becomes increasingly clear that there are ulterior motives to the couple's visit.

We just saw American Sniper with Bradley Cooper.

It was totally absorbing and Bradley Cooper became Chris Kyle.

The audience was full of vets, including older men with Vietnam vet caps.

There wasn't a sound in the theatre through the whole movie, except for sniffing and nose blowing; including the vets.

It was gut-wrenching and we were glad that we saw it.

OH! I loved it!

It was very long, but I watched it at home, and took a couple of mid-movie breaks to cook dinner and make a phone call, so it didn't feel interminable to me at all.

I really appreciated the simple beauty of it.

I also saw the 'Imitation Game' recently. I liked it because I'm really happy Alan Turing's story is being told, but it felt more like a 2-part Masterpiece Theatre production, rather than a feature film. And while I'm grateful Turing's story is being told and he is being recognized for his genius and his incredible accomplishments - I was disappointed that they glossed over/barely touched upon the tragic end of his life, the government administered chemical castration, the loss of his career, the loss of his motor functions, the scorn of society - all because he was gay.

Cake with Jennifer Aniston.

I know that there was a big push to nominate her for an academy award but I think that the right decision to not nominate her, was made in this case, IMHO.

Fake scars on her face: check.
Grief: check
Chronic pain: check.

All of these issues are serious and profoundly difficult to deal with in RL, however, none were believable, to me, in this movie.

In 2003, high-school football coach Bob Ladouceur (Jim Caviezel) and his De La Salle Spartans have just completed an incredible 151 consecutive victories and 12-straight state championships. The film documents the efforts of some Italian diplomats and military members to save the lives of Jewish persons who had sought their protection in Italian occupied areas during WWII. The Duke of Burgundy

Per Rotten Tomatoes:

Day after day, Cynthia (Sidse Babett Knudsen) and Evelyn (Chiara D'Anna) act out a simple yet provocative ritual that ends with Evelyn's punishment and pleasure. As Cynthia yearns for a more conventional relationship, Evelyn's obsession with erotica quickly becomes an addiction.

Per my GF and I:

It felt very long, heavily stylized, too many art-house type camera shots, brief erotic moments and was confusing at times.

The critics gave it 95%, viewers gave it 77% and we gave it about a 50%.

It is On Demand.

A Most Violent Year

Set during the winter of 1981 -- one of the most crime-ridden of New York City's history -- A MOST VIOLENT YEAR is a drama following the lives of an immigrant and his family as they attempt to capitalize on the American Dream, while the rampant violence, decay, and corruption of the day drag them in and threaten to destroy all they have built.

Overview thanks to Rotten Tomatoes: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/a_most_violent_year/

Starring Oscar Isaac as Abel Morales, Jessica Chastain as Anna Morales, David Oyelowo as Lawrence and Albert Brooks.

It was a really thoughtful, well-written and excellently acted movie. We both thought it was really good. We had never seen Oscar Isaac before and he was very good as the lead.

Ultra-violent but as Rotten Tomatoes also says:

Ok, a couple things.

1) I feel a little better now that I realize this was, in actuality, a very long movie. I wasn't expecting three hours LOL.

2) I also for some odd reason didn't realize it was a Scorcese film. Don't know how I wasn't paying to that fact, but he's not my favorite usually.

Thusly--my reaction of: This was cool for a little while but it's too long and I've had enough all makes sense to me. Thank you for giving me a thread to work that all out. I was able to get back into it after a break, but this movie wasn't anything special to me.

Hi Fancy. Julie and I went to see Birdman for our Valentine's date and both of us left the theater thinking "that was interesting." Cinematography was great. Kill the Messenger

Based on the True story of Journalist Gary Webb. The film takes place in the mid 1990s, when Webb uncovered the CIA's past role in importing huge amounts of cocaine into the U.S. that was aggressively sold in ghettos across the country to raise money for the Nicaraguan Contras rebel army. Despite enormous pressure not to, Webb chose to pursue the story and went public with his evidence, publishing the series "Dark Alliance". As a result he experienced a vicious smear campaign fueled by the CIA. At that point Webb found himself defending his integrity, his family, and his life.

Starring Jeremy Renner.

Why? Film made no sense. Completely fragmented, non-linear pieces of film sliced together to make what avant garde art types think is film-making. Drek.

St. Vincent
Well executed, well-acted portrayal of life, love and loss. Time worthy.

Birdman
Mind numbing drum banging; chaotic, like bad jazz. It eludes me why this film is so awarded. I'm happy for Michael Keaton that his career is boosted. Again, avant-garde, which is not a bad thing, except here it might be.

<<<Snip>>>

Really incredible to know the depth and reach of the NSA's reach into our computers, Internet, telephone calls, credit cards, etc., etc.

Whether there is zero reason for them to collect data on you or not: they are doing it!

Citizenfour just won this the Academy Award for best documentary film and we saw it on HBO last night.

"In January 2013, Laura Poitras received an encrypted e-mail from a stranger who called himself Citizen Four. In it, he offered her inside information about illegal wiretapping practices of the NSA and other intelligence agencies. Poitras had already been working for several years on a film about monitoring programs in the US, the result of the September 11 attacks. In June 2013, accompanied by investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald and The Guardian intelligence reporter Ewen MacAskill, she went to Hong Kong with her camera for the first meeting with the stranger, who identified himself as Edward Snowden. Several other meetings followed. The recordings gained from the meetings form the basis of the film".

Took my young man out to see MacFarland USA this weekend, and he liked it very much. I thought It seemed a little too prescriptive of Disney at moments, but overall was a decent message of stamina, hope, and triumph. One of the things I thought most interesting was learning that my son didn't know where his food came from and about the people and their conditions who worked in that area(migrant labor). We actually had a more meaningful conversation about that topic than the running; and that's a good thing in my opinion.

I saw a double feature today.

I was going to see Kingsman: The Secret Service but I made a last minute switch and decided at go time to see this movie:

O96og_f-Omk

It was a lovely surprise and there are a TON of actors and actresses (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2555736/fullcredits/) that I enjoy in it. I hadn't heard much about it, so I didn't know that Richard Gere was in it. That was a nice surprise for sure. I liked being in a half filled auditorium with more mature patrons. It was a nice change.

Initially, I didn't plan on a double feature but as soon as I got out of one, the other was starting so it worked out perfectly.

Rosewater

In June 2009, BBC journalist Maziar Bahari, an Iranian-born Canadian citizen, returned to his native country to interview Mir-Hossein Moussavi, the prime challenger to incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. When Moussavi's supporters protested Ahmadinejad's declaration of victory, Bahari smuggled footage of the riots to the BBC. He was soon arrested by the Revolutionary Guard and -- led by a man known only as "Rosewater" -- was interrogated and tortured for 118 days.

Release date: November 14, 2014 (USA)
Director: Jon Stewart
Story by: Aimee Molloy, Maziar Bahari

IMBd

Truly sobering and hard to watch at times. It is difficult to believe that Bahari was so naive that he would think that he could film the riots.

His father had been imprisoned by the Shah for being a communist in the 1950's and his deceased sister was also imprisoned in Iran for 6-years, in the 1980's. She was also accused of being a communist.

The Iranians wanted him to confess that he was a spy for the CIA.

It is not uplifting but as his hallucination of his father tells him at one point:

What is more dangerous than the truth?

As far as I'm concerned, Dianne Keaton always delivers. Okay, it's a fluff film but with solid acting from two veterans. Plus, Keaton sings, and sings well. I liked it. Time worthy.

Big Men
Documentary. Interesting how much access this filmmaker got to CEOs of Kosmos and to officials in Africa, which leads me to think that it's a bit of a PR piece, which is fine, because ultimately it does a good job of educating people about oil, corruption, greed [domestic & foreign] in African resources and countries. It's time worthy.

Really terrific documentary about LA County USC Medical Center's ED.

Name: Code Black.

It refers to those (very frequent) times when the ED is so overcrowded that it is critical mass. They turn no one away for lack of money (or undocumented status) and are basically the place of last resort for those with nowhere else to go for healthcare.

The dedication of the ED physicians (and nurses) and their frustration with the state of US healthcare system was palpable.

Very much worth watching.

imbd review:

A notorious trauma bay in an inner-city E.R. earns its keep as the 'hurt locker of medicine' as new, idealistic and adrenaline-seeking doctors train in an environment akin to a war zone. When the hospital moves to a swank new building, the rush fades and bureaucracy gridlocks the state-of-the-art facility, and the doctors are faced with the unexpected realities of life and death in a safety-net health-care system on the brink of overload.

Finding Neverland

This charming account of a period in the life of author J.M. Barrie (Johnny Depp) reveals the real relationships and events that served as the basis for the author's most iconic work, "Peter Pan." After Barrie develops a platonic relationship with the widowed Sylvia (Kate Winslet) and her four sons, he is inspired to write a play about a group of children who don't want to grow up. The work proves a hit and winds up bringing Barrie and the children together in a way he had never expected.

I did something different today. Our local cinema plays a silver screen classic every Monday at 1pm. They charge $2 per person and admission includes a tiny drink and popcorn. It's really cute.

I went today for the first time and even though one guy left his cell phone on but couldn't hear it going off in the middle of the movie and another guy woke himself up with his own snoring and yet another person coughed up half a lung during the movie, I actually enjoyed it. Clearly it's a tightknit group as they knew all of one another's names and mentioned when one guy was late. Turns out he was in Boston traffic 2 hours before the movie and nearly ran his car into the ground to get there. I talked with a couple while we were in line for the goodies and they seemed really nice. I won't get the opportunity to go every week but I think I'll be able to swing once or twice a month. The movie was good (despite the racism and sexism that came with 1949) and the experience was fun. I love horse movies and especially ones based on real horses. :)

Yesterday I stopped by a Redbox and wanted to pick out something fluffy and mind-numbing since I don't feel well and my brain is mush right now.

What did I walk away with?

Unbroken.

It is absolutely phenomenal. Angelina Jolie did an excellent job of directing. Jack O'Connell did an amazing job as portraying Louie Zamperini. Miyavi did an outstanding job making me hate Watanabe, the main antagonist, with a fiery passion I didn't know I was capable of today. The fact that it's based on a true story just proves what we can do when we put our minds to it.

I'm feeling decidedly unaccomplished but proud as Hell of him. He experienced so much in his lifetime and survived many times over events that would have taken the will and life of others. Loved this movie.

Jack O'Connell was in the original cast of Skins, my BBC guilty pleasure of quite a while ago (think it is on Netflix for those of you that never saw it. The opening sequence is a hoot of a classic, btw).

Jack is also outstanding in the more recent Starred Up. Also either on Netflix or Amazon Prime now.

I finally watched Gone Girl. Unbelievable. That woman was the epitome of a sociopathic crazy going to mess your life up woman. Loved the suspense. Of course you knew something was up when they focus on the husband all the time.

Also, watched The Book Thief based on the novel by Markus Zusak. If you have not read the book - you should (I did before I saw the movie). The movie lives up to the book - which is always a good thing.

1. are about horses
2. are based on real life
3. end happily

It even had the cute guy from Leverage in it.

BUT

If you are looking for a movie that's got award winning acting, this isn't it.

BUT

It is cute and it does have an amazing reenactment of a once in a lifetime racing scene. Definitely worth the buck and change I paid to see it.

I saw two more movies this weekend. First up was The Voices. Going into it, I knew that it would likely nudge a few sore spots with me and it did a little, but not as much as I thought given the subject matter. It was not what I would call a 'good' movie but it was twisted and a bit dark and sometimes you need that.

This past weekend I watched Dallas Buyer's Club - excellent movie. Matthew did a great job in working his character. Just affirms what most of us already know in regards to insurance companies and pharmas. Glove and hand.

Then I watched The Fault in our Stars - I was so afraid this was going to be a "chick" flick. (not that there is anything wrong with them) :| Which I guess to a certain extent it was. However, the premise of the movie was so touching - and the actors so good - that it never felt like that that glossy-cotton candy type movie. I am glad I decided to watch it. I had some free tix so I went to see this and Age of Adaline today. Both were excellent in their respective genres.

Anya, you are right....Mad Max is steampunk driven, given the nature of the storyline. There were some truly and fantastically incredible visuals! It gives you perspective to know that the vehicle chase scenes in the movie took more than half of the total time put into the film. Several months and it showed. Thrilling action flick!

This was quality in all aspects. The story was well put together, the acting was good and it was interesting and even though it involved something not entirely realistic, everything else was as I expected if such an event did occur. Winnie Mandela : "South Africa's Winnie Mandela, one of the most galvanizing public figures in modern history, comes to life in this absorbing biopic." with Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard

This moving was indeed interesting to watch. However, I am not convinced it depicts the depths of the true story. I knew some of this story prior to watching it and continued on with additional research about the Mandela families fight. There is much more to the story than this (as in any movie)...I am not sure how I feel about her yet. While I researched her story I found myself on an emotional roller coaster of admiration, disappointment, disgust in a never ending ride of all spectrums of each emotion. War can cause a man or women to do things that they would have never thought to do...sometimes they loose themselves all together.

Saw Tomorrowland at the drive-in last night. I liked it, but I like almost all things Disney. It reminded me somewhat of the Young Adult/Hunger Games-type genre, and somewhat of the live action Disney movies of the 70s. George Clooney was very good in it. It was visually very exciting, in that immersion-in-wonder kind of Disney way. The story was pretty exciting in some parts, too, but it was too long and could probably have easily lost 15 minutes and been a better movie.

Well, before I took off for the wild I saw Still Alice - umm yes, a tear jerker for real. Julianne Moore was wonderful, as always.

I also saw John Wick with Keanu Reeves.

Legendary assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) retired from his violent career after marrying the love of his life. Her sudden death leaves John in deep mourning. When sadistic mobster Iosef Tarasov (Alfie Allen) and his thugs steal John's prized car and kill the puppy that was a last gift from his wife, John unleashes the remorseless killing machine within and seeks vengeance. Meanwhile, Iosef's father (Michael Nyqvist) -- John's former colleague -- puts a huge bounty on John's head.

Now I am not normally a Keanu Reeves fan, a friend of mine suggested this. I actually really liked it. Very good.

I would recommend both of these movies.

I saw Tomorrowland today. The movie itself was very good. The acting was well done and the visual cornucopia was spectacular.

BUT

In the first few minutes, I was thrown off by some mistakes made with young Frank's bag. One scene, the bag is wet. The next scene, the bag is dry. One scene, the bag is 3-4 feet away. The next scene, the bag was directly at his feet and he just picked it up. Those blatant mistakes distracted me from the movie for a little bit but I got into it shortly thereafter.

BUT

There was a surprise that tickled me to no end. THIS (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4861965/) young man is in the movie. Anyone notice why I might be happy with that?

A prize goes to the first to see it.

Mad Max!

I've been told the turn of phrase for settings like those of Mad Max is "dieselpunk." I think it fits well enough, even if you could call it more gasolinepunk or petrolpunk or whatev.

Anyway, I just saw it today (with my first cousin once removed), and it was bloody glorious. I don't really even watch movies, let alone action movies, but it was an excellent piece of cinematography: a film that works because it's a film and because the entire work was designed from the ground up for a visual medium, as opposed to all the movies out there that work better as books. No scene or visual is wasted: every single one tells you something about the world and the people in it, and well enough so that you can grasp what's going on even with very little dialogue, owing both to the quality of the scene-setting and the quality of the acting. You don't have to be told what's going on, because you can see it clearly, in a way so well-presented that it makes the unbelievable believable. It's an action movie, and yet it works as well as it does because it has a narrative and a world that feel real, and because the narrative isn't a flimsy justification for what's happening on-screen but rather is what's happening on-screen. It also fits a great deal into two hours as a result of being fast-paced and not lingering on anything more than it needs to, but is still put together with enough skill that it's easy to follow in spite of this. The only real challenge is enduring the sheer intensity, because it is a very visually rich and powerful work. There may be sensory overload.

Also, it manages to be very creepy and intense and tackle profoundly dark subject matter while somehow showing the restraint to not degenerate into a vulgar exploitation flick. It's definitely an R-rated movie, with violence and with segments that made me squirm a bit, and yet it avoided violence for the mere sake of titillation and limited itself to what actually served the narrative. This may be part of the complete lack of wasted time, where for being a two-hour movie it is nonetheless very concise and only shows what actually serves the experience. It's entirely possible that quite a bit ended up on the cutting-room floor.

Suffice it to say there's a lot that can be said about the movie without spoiling it, because what makes it great isn't simply the plot itself but how that plot is executed.

I am still left wondering one thing, though. The conventional wisdom is that action movies don't make their money off of women viewers. I find myself wondering if that holds true for Fury Road--or if it would hold true if more action movies were like it.

Last night I watched:

Lee Daniels' The Butler

After leaving the South as a young man and finding employment at an elite hotel in Washington, D.C., Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker) gets the opportunity of a lifetime when he is hired as a butler at the White House. Over the course of three decades, Cecil has a front-row seat to history and the inner workings of the Oval Office. However, his commitment to his "First Family" leads to tension at home, alienating his wife (Oprah Winfrey) and causing conflict with his anti-establishment son.

I have not seen such a poignant movie in quite some time. I tend to watch movies that make you think (from time to time) - especially about things that are relevant to our present and/or past. This one did exactly that. If you have not seen it, you should.

Jordan) is now trying hard to live a clean life and support his girlfriend (Melonie Diaz) and young daughter (Ariana Neal). Flashbacks reveal the last day in Oscar's life, in which he accompanied his family and friends to San Francisco to watch fireworks on New Year's Eve, and, on the way back home, became swept up in an altercation with police that ended in tragedy. It was difficult to believe that the Lost Boys and Girls of the Sudan literally walked 1,000 miles to find some sort of safety, and for the most part, they were children.

Many of the actors were Sudanese.

It was really good and a tearjerker for most of the movie.

I saw this tonight. It officially opens tomorrow but my theatre had a couple of evening showings tonight so I jumped at it. Good call!

I like Melissa McCarthy anyway but I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The lady behind me and to the right also seemed to enjoy it according to her snorts and cackles.

Jason Statham was funnier than I've seen him before. He still kicked a little bit of ass but was more funny than kickass. It was a nice change.

If you go see it, stay through the WHOLE thing, until all of the credits have run.

The Theory of Everything!

I really enjoyed this movie. Even if it did have romantic parts to it!

The Judge - Robert Duvall, Robert Downey Jr. - I enjoyed it, very emotional. A few cheesy spots, but well acted.

I watched this movie earlier today:

fBll8vvDAtY

It was okay. It's a B class movie and the acting is not stellar. I did enjoy the revenge aspect of it though and it was interesting having a hearing impaired heroine. It was annoying, however, that people kept referring to her as mute and she wasn't.

I'm currently listening to the SpongeBob movie.

Since I didn't actually watch all of it, I can't say much but it was fun to have in the background.

The Best of Me "A pair of former high school sweethearts reunite after many years when they return to visit their small hometown." It has an unexpected ending..pretty good watch

Would You Rather "Desperate to help her ailing brother, a young woman unknowingly agrees to compete in a deadly game of "Would You Rather," hosted by a sadistic aristocrat." Wasn't a high end movie... and a tad F***ed up but not a bad watch

I will only go to the theatre if the movie is directed or written by a woman.
Even in NYC that leaves slim pickings. *sigh*

The description kind of reminds me of this movie, which was well made but gritty and kinda effed up all kinds of ways.

I've been on the fence about Best of Me, so I appreciate the critique.

Excellent visual smorgasbord of dino stuffs and I learned a new trick to hide my scent for when I'm being hunted by one.

This was a good movie but it disturbed me at certain parts, especially how Chappie was treated as he was learning how to process his world. It mimicked the patterns of an abusive household with a child in it and when he was attacked and then attacked again, I actually had to get up and walk away from the TV for a minute. That was a surprise to me. Thankfully, things took a turn for the better.

One thing that I noticed is that in these movies there were 3 actors who typically play good guy roles (a detective, an FBI psychologist and Wolverine) and they played against the type here I did not like that.

I like my good guys good and my bad guys dead.

It was pretty good. I like to stay until the end because sometimes they add scenes or do fun little things. They had a list called Production Babies. I'm assuming it's a list of babies that were born during the production, but anything's possible.

It was a looooong list.

Lots of sex with animators, apparently.

But I was begged by the cutest boy last night to go see 'Inside Outside' so I am (happily) going to see that right after work :D

I felt rather meh about it. I waited for it to get gooder....it just never got there.

This morning I woke up early and started watching The Cobbler with Adam Sandler. Very disappointing in so many ways. I won't bother to finish it.

We saw two movies this weekend. Now that we are not working on my house every weekend, we looked at each other, asked what we should do instead and said, in unison: "The movies!"

We saw the first one entitled Spy, with Melissa McCarthy. She was funny but the F word seemed to be every other word and they used the C word a couple of times and I really hate that derogatory word!

We got great seats and the movie starts and in comes a woman pushing a baby carriage! WTF? She also brought a boy around 5 or 6 and they stayed throughout the movie. I kept wanting to cover his ears and felt very uncomfortable!

Yes, the baby cried periodically throughout the movie.

The movie was funny in parts and I do like Melissa but the language was over the top <<<< getting old, grannie.

be/YrY3v1eDmQY

The second one we saw this weekend was very good. It was a science fiction but for all that I know, the technology may already be in practice.

It made you think and entertained at the same time. I always like that in a movie!

I forgot! We also saw Jurassic World.

Pure escapism, great special effects, not much of a story line and same general premise as Jurassic Park.

It is more violent than Jurassic Park and not for small children.

My GF's 5-year-old nephew is obsessed with dinosaurs. He recognizes them on sight, knows all of their names and really wants to go to this movie but it would be totally inappropriate to take him to see this one.

Sorry, little guy.
