We saw Jason Bourne yesterday.

The original Bourne, Matt Damon is back.

I liked it. It is action-packed! The GF and I reverse roles when it comes to movies. She likes the romantic comedies and dramas and I much prefer the shoot-em-up action flicks.

It was my turn yesterday!

I love old movies and thus I was very much enjoyed it
I saw it in the first place for Tilda Swinton who plays not 1 but 2 characters.

I saw two movies yesterday. Both were fantastic.

I laughed so freakin' hard during this movie. There was a group of about 10 women and they laughed so hard too, the 11 of us were louder than the rest of the audience.

I highly recommend it. Highly.

This was a great action flick and, if you like the series, it's a really good addition to it and a fine welcome back for Mr. Damon.

I saw Suicide Squad. First of all, it's not nearly as bad as the critics' reviews say. If you just want a fun, action-filled comic book based flick, it fills that niche. Margot Robbie is really good as Harley Quinn, and she gets a lot of screen time. Also, I was impressed that she gets as much action time (maybe even a little more) as any of the boys. She is evil, trampy, and brutal in a very fun way. Will Smith was great as, well, himself, as usual. I wish we'd gotten more screen time with Jared Leto as the Joker - his costuming alone was really unusually and interestingly realized - and he and Harley Quinn visually made a great pair.

I was disappointed with the soundtrack. From all the hype on my local radio station, and videos on YouTube, I thought we were getting a great new soundtrack. Unfortunately, there was a lot of recycled '60s and '70s rock, like Ozzy Ozbourne and Queen. That was probably the most disappointing thing about the whole film for me.

Anyway, I'd recommend it, if you're into comic book films - especially if you're a fan of the DC universe.

We watched The Lobster yesterday. I don't know why. I also don't know why we didn't stop watching the first time one of us said: "This is really stupid, why are we watching it?".

IMDb:

Single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in forty-five days or are transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods.

Director: Yorgos Lanthimos
Writers: Yorgos Lanthimos, Efthymis Filippou (as Efthimis Filippou)
Stars: Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Jessica Barden

Rotton Tomatoes gave it a score of 90% and viewers gave it 68%.

We kept watching thinking it would get better and that the critics thought it great. Us? Not so much.

I saw Bourne yesterday, like several other people in this thread. Lots and lots of action, so make sure you don't have to go to the bathroom in the middle of it like I did. :bucktooth:

It only got a 57% on RottenTomatoes, but I thought it was more around 70%?

on a hindi movie kick again! i watched another of deepa mehta's gems, 'heaven on earth' (preity zinta was -brilliant- in it) yesterday, and tonight it's 'yahaan' (great premise, not so sure about the execution, but it's not over yet).

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMTM4Mjc2MjY3Nl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTYwNTUwMw@@._ V1_UY268_CR2,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

Heaven on Earth a.k.a. Videsh is a 2008 Canadian film directed and written by Deepa Mehta. Preity Zinta plays the leading role of Chand, a young Indian Punjabi woman who finds herself in an abusive arranged marriage with an Indo-Canadian man, played by theatre actor Vansh Bhardwaj.

Adaa (Minissha Lamba) is a Kashmiri woman torn between her army officer lover Aman (Jimmy Shergill) and her insurgent brother Shakeel (Yashpal Sharma). Trouble ensues when Aman's superiors come to know of his involvement with the sister of a terrorist and implicate him as an accomplice. Thus, Adaa begins a valiant attempt to save Aman from the perils of a court-martial and Shakeel is torn between his family's happiness and safety and his own jihadi cause.

I have no idea why the critics decided to slam it with bad reviews. I thought it was great obviously, and everyone I know who has seen it liked it too.

I'm not sure about the film lineup for Saturday night, but one of the films is definitely going to be an Indiana Jones film. Which one, I have no idea. The other film is not a kid friendly film, so it's been kept hush-hush. Not one of us knows what the after hours film is going to be. I'm guessing it's either going to be an long forgotten, over the top, dirty movie or something along those lines (lol, or not).

I guess that's part of the intrigue at this two day party. Either way, I'm pretty sure it will be lots of fun meeting family members I've never met before. : )

The Fury from 1978 on Netflix I should say again but there is nothing like a good horror classic to pleasantly occupy down time.
If it came out today it would probably be considered Sci-fi maybe a thriller. If you have seen Firestarter the plot for The Fury is similar. Two teens with "special ablities" taken by a secret government agency and one of the fathers goes after them.
While the audio quality isn't up to today's standards the "actors" far exceed today's if only because they actually had to act in 1978 and didn't have to rely on special effects or gore to carry the plot.

...I've been on a space opera/sci-fi kick lately....

Jupiter Ascending: There seems to be a mixed crowd for this one, I was fascinated, visually stunning, if u have blu-ray. Genetics taken to a whole new, rather spooky level...the Wachowski's def. enjoy the thematic of human consumption(in every sense of the word and definition) I think I've seen this one 6 times..More fun to watch at night, lights out....as I said "visually stunning", at some points if u look around, the room gives out an impressive mess of lights...if u've seen it, in My opinion, the "Groom" dressed better than the reluctant "Bride" :seeingstars: Would be nice to see some sequels and/or prequel

Cloud Atlas Felt more like jigsaw Puzzle, blink, grab a drink or pick the wrong piece and you're horridly lost for awhile in the unraveling/developing plot...Several actors(Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Susan Sarandon, etc etc) take on several different characters each through the span of more than 5 centuries, each ones choices, actions, decisions and outcomes affect each other in some way in the very long haul, whether through cause and effect, or inheritance, your pick...Another Wachowski project

Others I've *recently* seen and enjoyed, or found intellectually entertaining
"The Danish Girl"
"The Theory of Everything"{both with Eddie Redmayne}
"Creed"{Looking forward to more, if any}
"Spotlight"{Infuriating at first..}
"Ex Machina" {Don't ever fuck with 'droids, ever...literally.}

Its set in the early 80's when the first cases of Aids were starting to really take hold in the gay comunity.

Several of us in our book club who really enjoyed The Girl On The Train are going to go see the film version of the story. It's playing in local theaters, so we're going to catch an late afternoon matinee and then go out for dinner. Should be lots of fun because our group of readers really liked the thriller but none of us have any expectations for the film. I liked the building suspense of how Rachel took to investigating what she witnessed (because of how she doubted her memory). Totally recommend the book, for those looking for something new to read.

I went on a girls night movie date with my best femme to see the new Bridget Jones movie. I was hesitant because these stories don't often hold up a decade or so later (AbFab ... SATC movie deux)...

But we had so much fun watching it and found it resonated in the most cringeworthy and laugh out loud (40somethingnow) ways.

Then I got home and realized that in my rush to get to the cinema I locked myself out of my apartment. (This is not something *i do* I'm methodical and hypervigilant, and of course it happens when my landlord/upstairs neighbor is in Vermont and Hack is up at his weekday work crashpad an hour away)

So I do balanced a plastic lawn chair on the loose rocks, climbed to the top, shimmied the window open, and promptly fell in head first. Ass over tea kettle as my Grama would have said. All the while my best femme held her iphone up for light and laughed til she nearly wee'd her pants.

I liked both these films.
Girl i liked because i like Emily Blunt.
people were a tad upset that it was set in usa and not where the book depicts which is London.
I hadnt read the book, so i guess that helped in some ways.
I found it really good.

A Quiet Passion.
This film is about the life of Emily Dickinson, the poet, who is played by none other than Cynthia Nixon.
All the cast are really good, and Cynthia seems to capture Emily beautifully.
The Film does have its light hearted moments, but on the whole is one about Emily's own struggles, and therefore quite sad.
But if you like period films with a very thought provoking meaning behind it, then this is a very good film.

The Revenant; with Leonardo DiCaprio. Holy @*%. What a great movie! I honestly didn't expect it to have any substance; I thought it was going to be all about action and scenery, but no, it had some real chops, though I must give a warning: it is brutal and gory, and not historically accurate, so take it for what it is, a fictional account.

I just finally saw the Revanant too!

Omg it was so awesome...raw and often primal. The scenery was like another character.

I googled the historical accuracy of the movie
(Nerdy I know) and The man behind the story (Hugh Glass) was a real person and did have an incredible life. Worth a Google and I want to read a book about him now.

Watched Food Inc. last night. Generally good movie, but liked Cowspiracy better (especially since it also looked at important topics like the unsustainability of free-range cattle farming in addition to industrial cattle). It makes me hope even more that genetically modified meat doesn't become legal in Canada, especially without labeling. The last hearing for this is in a couple days over here (I think for genetically modified salmon), and I really hope that whenever it goes to parliament it gets rejected. Totally disgusting idea that would forever change our environment and food system (the fear is also of genetically modified salmon populations contaminating natural populations).

So, hey, I saw G.O.T.T. twice: once with book club friends, once with my best friend (who saw it with her husband).

I don't know what to say really except I think the film brings richer dimension to the book. Both the book and film speak clearly about socially taboo relationship issues, such as: cheating, drinking to kill emotional pain, very poor boundaries, perceptions about status and wealth and a number of other issues with respect for relationship violence ---- all things I do not like, but I do like how the book and the film give the audience a way to process how one feels about such tragedy.

So, that said, I think I can say that the film and the book did a job well done, portraying this kind of social issue, in a fictional sense, although survivors of abuse, such as myself and others, find this topic triggering.

I really wanted to like this movie but I have fallen asleep twice already.

The costumes are gorgeous. My mom used to dress like the characters and there are pictures of her with her hair in some of the same styles.

Happily ever after is rare in lesbian movies. This doesn't end happily ever after but there is a kernel of hope that it just might.

Fascinating documentary about an 8-term New York Congressman who did a lot of good while in office, eg, fighting for 1st responders after 9-11, to get medical care, with a Congress that didn't want to authorize it -and then he blew it; big time. Twice!

I just kept asking myself: Why? Why? I think his own psychological issues just wouldn't allow him to stop. No matter the losses,

Free State of Jones

Based on a true story of "Newton Knight, a poor white farmer who led an extraordinary rebellion during the Civil War. With a company of like-minded white men in southeast Mississippi, he did what many Southerners now regard as unthinkable. He waged guerrilla war against the Confederacy and declared loyalty to the Union."

If it's not nominated for a few academy awards, I will be totally shocked. Phenomenal story, touching performances and a few twists and turns make it a great film.

As a side note, I was leaving and someone was pulling into a tight spot in front of my car (at the end of the row and they were coming in at weird angle because they drove past it, backed up and were turning right into it) and they hit the curb.

Instead of pulling back out and lining themselves up right, they kept trying to go forward, which was at an angle into the curb. About 8 inches high. Seriously? Irrational behavior like this is why car insurance is soooo expensive up here. I expected a young person to get out of the car after all of that but a full grown woman-maybe in her 40s-got out. With her kids. One of which was in sports shorts. Welcome to the NE on a snow day!

I was looking at Rotten Tomotatoes for a flick to watch tonight and found one with a 95% critic score and an 88% viewer score.

It is a Korean zombie movie.

You might think it hokie or cartoonish but you would be wrong.

I have been into it for 40 minutes so far, and it is non-stop action but with believable characters that I got invested in pretty much right away.

A review from IMDb:

"The best zombie film I have ever seen (outside of the comedy Shaun of the Dead). Such a great film. It starts exactly like a train ride gathering momentum and gaining speed. The only difference with this train ride is I didn't want it to stop. It has a brilliant script, fantastic effects plus a very good choice of cast and acting. It also has a 'credible' plot (as credible as you can get with the zombie genre). Many of the scenes will stay with me for a long time. I thoroughly recommend this very refreshing and fast paced film. Get a ticket and enjoy the ride!'

I saw A Dog's Purpose on Friday. I was a bit torn about it given the video that's surfaced showing a trainer forcing one of the dogs into rapidly churning water and then s/he was soon after sucked under. It was hard to watch.

I was torn, of course, because that's not how animals are supposed to be treated anywhere--not just on a movie lot--and also because the person who leaked this obviously has no interest in the care of the animal at all.

Movies are typically made 1-2 years before they open in theatres and someone sat on this footage all that time with the only intention of ruining opening sales for the movie. There was no humanitarian or altruistic leaning in this; it is purely financial and/or vengeful.

Part of me wants to work against their goal for the principle of it but part of me did want to hold off because there are agencies in place to make sure that stuff like that doesn't happen. That dog was failed, on multiple levels and by multiple people.

BUT

I went to see it and bawled a good 50% through the movie. It's a good movie. I still want to find out what happened after the water situation and if it was addressed or not, but I'm not sorry that I went to see it.

Stuck it out for another discount night movie that surprisingly wasn't as bad as I thought it would be...not that it would be up there with Academy Award status shows, but I see why "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" has a cult following.

I am 3/4 of the way through it and it is beautifully written, filmed and acted.

I think that it is sad that there was a fuck-up at the Acedemy Awards and that because of that, it took some of the joy that the filmmaker and actors could have experienced, had the best picture been awarded to them from the beginning.

I say possible spoiler because I don't know yet how it will end but there are parts up to this point that are heartbreaking to me.

From Redbox I rented;

Don't breath. Kept my attention but ended up being far darker than I imagined

X-men; Apocalypse. Love love love anything X-men.

The remake of The Magnificent Seven. Im not much for westerns, but it was wicked good.

Serendipitously, my Redbox was busy when I went to return movies, so I took them elsewhere.

Well....

For tonight I got PETE'S DRAGON (!!!!) finally.,.

And the Shallows. The preview looked good.

I decided to return the movies to my local Redbox to breath some variety into it. Its out of everything I want to see....

It came on and I was going to change the channel but I started enjoying it so much!

I remember seeing it in the movies with my long-term ex. It came out in 1987!

Diane Keaton, Sam Shepard and James Spader, to name a few. I wanted to post the trailer but on YouTube, I could only find the whole movie.

Diane Keaton is so awesome. No one plays loveable ditz better than her.

Storyline partially from IMBd and partially from me:

J.C. Wiatt is a successful New York business woman. She gets news of an inheritance from a relative from another country and right off the bat, she suspects it's money. Well it's not money, it's a baby girl. At first she doesn't accept the (super darling baby) until the lady that gives the baby to her has to catch her flight. J.C. Her boyfriend doesn't like the idea of a baby living with them and he leaves her.

J.C. has enough of her New York life, having had a male co-worker get a big account that she has worked hard to land. She decides to buy an old two story cottage in Vermont to get out of the New York life. When she arrives, the house needs more help than originally thought. She gets bored one snowy day and decides to make apple sauce. Her baby loves it and she decides to sell it at the town country store.

You know the rest, right?

You know how the majority of lesbian movies have totally unrealistic sex and how both leads are usually femme?

This is not that movie.

The passion between the leads is believable, the sex is hot and the one lead is femme and the other is butch (and a roofer by trade).

I am 3/4th of the way through and I don't think one dies as in most lesbian movies. They may not last but that happens in lesbian real life, too.

I am so happy that I found it by accident-on VuDu of all places.

Btw, in case you couldn't tell: I am loving it! It just feels "real" even though it is a movie. There is nothing cheap or tacky or pretend about it.

I did roll my eyes at YouTube having put in parentheses next to the title:
(Lesbian Movie).

I don't think I have ever seen them do that about a (Straight Movie) even one with a lot of sex in it.

Partial review below:

"...But the new Canadian drama Below Her Mouth, which opens stateside on Friday, is a direct challenge to these ideas: It’s got an androgynous heartthrob (Erika Linder), an all-women crew (including director April Mullen and out writer Stephanie Fabrizi), and several scenes showing how women actually make each other—and themselves—come.

That this is still revolutionary in 2017 says a lot about how much more progress is needed in the patriarchal film industry, and in the U.S. in general. It’s not a coincidence that Below Her Mouth was made in Canada, where censorship is less of a concern and the government freely supports the arts.

To make her actors feel safe and supported, Mullen not only insisted on a closed set, with just her and the female DP in the room but took other steps to ensure both comfort and authenticity: “We hid microphones around the room so there would be no boom operator,” she told me. “It was a really, really intimate space that we kind of created for them.”

That comfort allowed the intimate scenes between Linder and co-star Natalie Krill to be more organic.

“I would never have interrupted them just to be sure we got the right angle or the right light,” says Mullen. “You hope to catch it and if you don’t, you have to tweak things. But I would never direct or interrupt them in these scenes. I wanted it to play out really authentically between the two of them.”
Much of Below Her Mouth is driven by the sexual chemistry between Linder and Krill, who meet when Linder’s Dallas is working as a roofer on the house next door to Krill’s Jasmine. They later reconnect at a lesbian bar (Jasmine is engaged to a man but goes with her bisexual friend), and begin an affair. Mullen argues their blooming relationship is told just as much through their bodies as it is through dialogue. “You give everything you can to another person through your body—every movement and spirit and soul in that scene. So it’s like each sex scene really does have its own vibe.”

Below Her Mouth is one of few lesbian films that acknowledges it’s for a specific audience: In interviews, the stars of Carol and Freeheld continually insisted how “universal” their projects were, how they really weren’t “lesbian movies.” But can’t a work exist as both? Perhaps trying so hard not to be a “lesbian movie” is why those films failed to really capture what gay women are like—in bed and in the world.

The creatives behind Below Her Mouth don’t feel the need to negate it as a love story between two women to reach a larger audience. Maybe that comes from not being beholden to the American studio system.

There’s something to be said for allowing queer women to be in control of their own stories—though, even then, some viewers will inevitably disagree with those portrayals. (See: The Kids Are All Right.) But what Below Her Mouth accomplishes, compared to big studio flicks and even most lesbian-sex-heavy indies, is the true eroticism that emerges when two women are alone together, without feeling the watchful eye of a man—or several men.

Sure, they might end up being in the audience. But they needn’t be in the room when shooting the scene.

Many lesbian films by women are dismissed as sappy, heavy on melodrama, sisterhood, and cringeworthy folk songs. The worst of them resemble paperback romances or have a predictable plot with a tragic acting to match. Blame it on a lack of creativity—or budget—but there’s often less focus on the central plot and characters than the sex act themselves.

We gay gals are ultimately looking for a love story, a modern fairy tale that isn’t tragic like Monster or melodramatic like Claire of the Moon.. A movie is only be improved when it’s created by those who have the lived experience. (Or at least by those smart enough to reach out to experts, like the Wachowskis did with Susie Bright on Bound). What ultimately serves lesbian viewers best is a heightened version of reality: Two women with chemistry that is conveyed through organic dialogue, plot and body language, engaging in sex acts that weren’t created by an outsider’s imagination.

Yes, cinema is fantasy, but shouldn’t it be ours?"

I saw the previews yesterday and even the preview scared the hell out of me.

I know homoe doesn't like Rotten Tomatoes ( I read one of homoe's posts recently;) )but I usually agree with their reviews. The critics gave it 99% and viewers 88%.

That is one of the highest ratings that the critics on Tomatoes usually give and viewers are close behind.

I haven't seen or heard of it, but I will ask my bff if she's seen any sort of trailer for it at the movies.

I'm no movie expert or anything, but when I look up a movie via a Google search and I read the R.T. analysis, I sometimes think that how they determine the success of the film based on methods of critical review (which I think encompasses ranking systems of: budget, box office earnings, +\- audience opinion, and evaluative analysis by industry experts - such as Siskel and Ebert) gives someone a type of way to form their own opinion --- or in case someone has viewed the film and either agrees with submitted assessments or rejects submitted assessment of said film, is mostly, I think, pretty much near the agreed upon general evaluation of the film.

BUT, *lol*, I do tend to think that there is no real mistake free way to know if you've got a box office success or in some cases, films that were thought to not be well received actually turned out to be huge Sleeper hits.

Thanks for posting about Get Out, Anya.

I caught it on VuDu.

I am really glad I saw it. It was highly original and very clever. It was not scary in the way that I had feared, meaning not a slasher-type movie (well some but not gratuitous).

I will say no more other than it is worth seeing. Also, I like to support creative films that are written and directed by minorities.

My hope is always that if it is successful; it opens the door to more filmmakers that would otherwise not have a chance to create their own vision.

It was smart scary. ;)

It had its moments. Unfortunately, it did not take long to figure out what would happen...

John Wick 1 or John Wick 2 or both?

I loved both of them but think #2 edged out #1!

PS: Are you new to the Planet? Welcome!

Glad to have you here! :bunchflowers:

John Wick 2. It was ok, too much fighting. I would have been happy if they trimmed out about 30 minuts of it, it gets tedious when it just drags on forever.

Fever Pitch (2005) Jimmy Fallon Drew Barrymore

Lindsay is stuck in the middle of her relationship with Ben and his passion for the Boston Red Sox.

It had a few yucks but not really worth sitting through it all IMHO

Fallon was smart to venture into more of a comedy field instead of continueing to pursue acting IMHO

IJIGJtb_N7EA mistaken delivery in Mumbai's famously efficient lunchbox delivery system connects a young housewife to an older man in the dusk of his life as they build a fantasy world together through notes in the lunchbox.

The last movie I watched was a documentary called 'The Woman with 7 Personalities'
A woman connects with her childhood friend who had seven distinct personalities, while also consulting with psychological experts about the rare condition.
I enjoy the documentary as I felt it was respectfully presented from a personal upclose view that wasnt overly clinicly garbled. (if that makes sense)

The Take............ Idris Elba, Richard Madden, Charlotte Le Bon

A young con artist and an unruly CIA agent embark on an anti-terrorist mission in France.

I am not usually a fan of action movies and BOY did this movie have action but I rather enjoyed this one for some reason.,

Norman (2016)Richard Gere Michael Sheen Steve Buscemi Josh Charles

Norman Oppenheimer is a small time operator who befriends a young politician at a low point in his life. Three years later, when the politician becomes an influential world leader, Norman's life dramatically changes for better and worse.

An odd little movie but I did find it enjoyable! IMHO it was WAY to long tho..

It was okay. It felt 'B team' to me. I still cried at the end, because c'mon....but it wasn't done by the same folks that did the last one, for sure.

It took me a bit to get into it but once he touched down, things moved along nicely. Saw the parental 'twist' coming a mile away.

It has such a good message. I knew better, but I hoped for a different ending. This one was really good and who wouldn't want Jennifer Beals for their mom?

I picked up Wilson for tonight/tomorrow morning. I like quirky movies, so I'm hopeful for this one.
