The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

Director: Francis Lawrence

Writers: Simon Beaufoy (screenplay), Michael Arndt (screenplay).

This was like the 1st film which i found just as enjoyable. This sequel was over long though. I like the brutality of the story without it being explicit in its imagery. It still has the same garish costumes that copy, it would seem, every extreme of fashion. The gaudy reality show Hunger Games keeps the masses from revolting and Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) is still the somewhat reluctant symbol of hope.

Quote:
Katniss Everdeen: Any last advice?
Haymitch Abernathy: Stay alive.

My husband's review.

I loved this film. Found it to be better then the first Hunger Games film.

Makes me want to start reading the books!

Mandela...was a good movie. I was told it was boring and long, but geez it was about the life a man who lived to be 95 yrs old, it couldn't have been a hour movie.

Frozen...chuckles my Christmas Elf would be so proud of me for sitting threw this one. Cute movie, the lesson was the best part. Great move and music if you are a 3 yr old.

Bad Words

Starring Jason Bateman (Arrested Development).

I guess I have mixed feelings about it.

One of the best movies in that past few years and the best role I have ever seen Bateman in is State of Play with Helen Mirren, Russell Crowe, Robin Wright (The Conspirator, House of Cards) and Ben Affleck. Bateman just gave an interview with Ellen a couple of days ago.

Watched the Wolf of wall street today... not a bad movie..to much drugs, sex and nudity. I know I don't believe I just said that either. I'm just not into that kind of stuff in a movie anymore. Think I will like it better when it comes out on TBS LOL..

But hey it was as great a movie as Scarface if you ever want to watch it with ten friends and take turns drinking tequila shots each time someone drops the "F" bomb.

Non-Stop is an action thriller with Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore and Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey.) It's good. If you're a fan of these actors (I am), you may want to check it out. It starts with texts and other shit flying (no pun intended), but no spoiler here.

'Kill Your Darlings'

about the very 'early years' of Ginsberg, Burroughs, Kerouac.

I was kind of keen to see this, having missed it in the cinema, but I found it quite boring - which is a feat in and of itself - how can a story about Ginsberg, Burroughs and Kerouac be boring? :| And yet, have any of the biopics about the Beat Poets been any good? Maybe 'Fear and Loathing' ...

I was disappointed. Some head injuries can cause a loosening of inhibitions. I didnt see that in this movie. I saw a depressed, unfulfilled, bored spouse searching for something elusive. She didnt seem too happy even being a clandestine sex worker, surrogate, therapist.

Philomena

Judi Dench, Steve Coogan, Mare Winningham

Based on a true story.

In 1952, a young Philomena was sent to the convent of Roscrea in Ireland after becoming pregnant. When her son became a toddler, the nuns sent him to America for adoption.

Nearly 50 years later, Philomena meets Martin Sixsmith, a former BBC reporter looking for his next big story. Together, they embark on a journey to locate her long lost son. As the pieces of the puzzle come together, the unlikely travel companions form a comic and heartwarming friendship. Based on the 2009 investigative book by Martin Sixsmith.

-----

Very powerful. A mother determined to find her son, a son equally determined, and the Catholic Church determined to hide the truth.

Lately we have watched:

the monuments men ( I will have to re-watch it b/c I was falling asleep at the time it was on lol), After Earth (Will Smith, great movie), Labor Day (good movie, missed the ending, which I heard was the best part, Have to re watch this one!), Secret life of Walter Mitty (Odd but so neat too).

Also, I have some questions about movies on my "To See Movie List". I don't want spoilers, I would just like basic feedback and opinions on the movies. :) Here are a few on my list I am wanting to see. Has anyone seen these? Feedback?

1. The Railway Man
2. Winters Tale
3. Stalingrade
4. Face of Love
5. Million dollar arm
6. Frankie & Alice
7. Wrath of the Titans
8. Bad Country
9. The pretty one

Also, I am looking for other movies to watch and add to my movie list.

What I am looking for are documentaries/movies concerning the Holocaust and WW2. I have seen so many of them and I am searching for ones that I have not seen yet. So any ideas there, would be great.

Also, I am looking for movies based on true stories concerning FLDS and Polygamy. (Have seen a lot of these also)

And any other movies within these genres, based on true story movies that are in the genre of drama/psychological thriller either.

Also, very HUGE on Indie films as well.

Thanks to all who respond :D

Redbox day! I saw Planes, which disappointed me because the nimrod who had the disc before either scratched it up and didn't say anything or they also sat through a skipping, pixelating, freezing and jumping movie too and didn't say anything. Either way, I'm not a happy girl and I made sure Redbox pulls this disc when I turn in back in. I did piece together the story and it's super similar to Cars. I wish they'd stepped a bit farther outside of the boundaries for the story line but it's a good, harmless kids' movie so I can't complain.

I also picked up Ride Along but I'll wait until tomorrow night to watch it.

I'm about 30 minutes into The Conjuring and I had to take a break because I'm already too scared, lol. I don't think I want to see any more of it.

This makes me feel so old; I used to love having the bejeezus scared out of me. I've turned into such a pansy in my old age, lol.

I brought home the DVD 2 days ago, and I've been having bad dreams since!
What has happened to me? I used to be able to watch anything!

I don't want to sleep alone tonight. Only half of my face is sticking out from under the comforter and it isn't even dark out yet, lol. I guess I'd better go get everything I need from the kitchen now because I already know I'll end up watching the rest once I regain my composure.

Hopefully it ends up being less scary than I imagine.

Well, I know many people who loved the show. I went because at the very least the music would be a TBT. Well the music was. But I can't say much about the rest of it. It was slow to get into, very flat in its direction, little energy except for the music. I think for me, none of the characters were portrayed with any depth, I didn't find them likable. But that is just my opinion. I did, however, come out singing and thought the last scene was great.

One other thing, prior to the movie a new app was advertised: the run and pee app. It tells you when in a film you have the best chance of going to pee and how much time you have to do it. I kid you not.

Sometimes i let my wife pick a movie that she wants to see, and that i would never pick if left up to me. I like mainstream movies, and she likes independents and such. Most times i really like the films she picks, so i don't mind much. Today was an exception, i absolutley hated the movie as did she.

If you want to be angry beyond words, waste your money on the film "America".

Written and narrated by what appears to be a tea bagger, and as it turns out the same person who did "1600" about President Obama.

As i sat there stunned that we had wasted our time and money on this pap, i grew to feel even more than anger...i felt fear. Fear that malable, frightened people longing for the "good old days" see things like this, and think they are fact.

By the time the movie was over, if i was uneducated and let's face it, stupid, i would have begun to believe that the Native Americans and slaves were done a favor by the treatment that they received.

The movie also focuses on Obama and Hilarey, and how they are socialist leaning and are out to destroy the country in a conspiracy not yet fully implemented.

Transcendence: I'm not a huge fan of Johnny Depp and his movies but I liked the message of this film of mans god-like obsession with technology and the potential destruction of humanity. It's just a shame the delivery of this message was in the hands of a bad script writer and poor director.
Now if this film was made or remade by the real talent of The Wachowski Brothers (i.e Bound, Matrix) it would have been a mind bending and entertaining extravaganza! :2cents:

It was crap.

Worst.

Movie.

Evah.

Now, I know it's a Michael Bay movie and I don't expect an Oscar level film but .. whoever edited the film did a horrendous job. One minute a transformer is in humanoid form and then the next frame, they're a car (no transformation).

The only reason to see this movie in the theater is because of the effects. There are a couple of scenes that are impressive in their CGI.

The Lunchbox is a 2013 Indian epistolary romantic film written and directed by Ritesh Batra

Saajan is a lonely accountant about to retire from his job. Ila is a young wife seeking her husband's attention, looking for ways to put romance back in her marriage, and tries to cook her way to her husband's heart. Through a rare mixup of the famous "dabbawalas" of Mumbai, the lunchbox with the delicious food Ila prepared for her husband instead gets delivered to Saajan. An exchange of the messages sent back and forth with the lunches ignites a friendship between Saajan and Ila who share memories and thoughts in notes passed back and forth in the lunch pails

I enjoyed it, check it out and see what you think!

Intense does not mean lovers, btw.

"Violette Leduc, born a bastard at the beginning of last century, meets Simone de Beauvoir in the years after the war in St-Germain-des-Prés. Then begins an intense relationship between the two women that will last throughout their lives, relationship based on the quest for freedom by writing to Violet and conviction for Simone to have in their hands the fate of an extraordinary writer."

In a gripping, heart-wrenching true story that shocked the nation. May 5, 1993. West Memphis, Arkansas. Three young boys playing in the nearby woods never come home for dinner. In the rush to find and convict the killers, police focus on a trio of teenagers suspected of devil worship. It is only when an investigator reveals that the evidence doesn't all add up, that the community is forced to face the reality that the true killer might still be out there.

Saw Lone Survivor. Was an incredible movie of duty, bravery, and survival.

And, in the inescapable brutality of war, the Sabray tribe and the principles of Pashtunwali (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pashtunwali) just blew me away. What they did to protect that soldier, without a second thought to their own safety and survival, rendered me speechless.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

Director:
Matt Reeves
Writers:
Mark Bomback, Rick Jaffa.

Caesar: [in sign language] If we go to war, we could lose all we’ve built.

Caesar: [spoken aloud] Home. Family. Future.

I’ll be cheeky and say this is a remake of Battle for the Planet of the Apes, with more then one truck and a mounted machine gun. Both sides have prejudiced members who ruin everything. For course, it would seem, the apes have a someone who betrays everything that both sides have built, even the apes moral code is broken. You can understand Koba (Toby Kebbell, even in CGI he plays the villain) mistrust of humans. Massive set pieces of violence show us (in a film) that intolerance and animal testing will mess up the planet.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Director:
Martin Scorsese
Writers:
Terence Winter (screenplay), Jordan Belfort (book)

quote: Jordan Belfort: I’m sure. Good luck on that subway ride home to your miserable ugly fuckin’ wives. I’m gonna have Heidi lick some caviar off my balls in the meantime.

Leonardo DiCaprio works well with Scorsese, it has to be said. Matthew McConaughey has a great scene and his character is a real mental case. Its the sort of film where you are suppose to dislike the main protagonists, but don’t. They want to make money but just got greedy, which is their downfall. The decadence is mind blowing really, but these people were making more money then god and could afford to do anything they wanted! I hope Scorsese and Leo work together again but i wonder if the director gets bored of making fraudsters, mob figures and murderers seem charismatic and cool

I felt about it pretty much how I thought I was going to feel--which was that it kinda fell flat. I mean, yeah--the visual effects were amazing. But I feel like the movie was driven by that alone. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - we loved it! Initially, my daughter did not want to go but she confessed early on that it was a great movie! It is funny that the movie makes you empathize with the apes so you are rooting for them to beat the evil humans. lol In my opinion, there are many good moral messages in the movie as well, such as the negative consequences of guns in a society and learning to coexist with those who are different than you.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. Obviously, it lacked the incomparable Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowell, and Kim Hunter and also the shock ending of that 1968 original. Maybe it's just me, but the more CGI you throw into a movie, the less "soul" it has. Explosions and action don't make up for soul, or memorable characters.

I kept waiting for one of the humans to have a damn sense of humor and yell "Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!"

I couldn't agree more, I like a good explosion as much as anyone, but I think the writer/programer ratio went off the rails a while ago.

I watched this documentary yesterday. Granted, my knowledge of Takei was strictly as Mr. Sulu prior to seeing this film. This is one cool guy who grabs life by the balls, has a positive outlook, despite being in a concentration camp as a child and he lived most of his life closeted in order to have a career in Hollywood.

Time worthy.

Matthew Weiner's 'Are You Here'

I'm a big Mad Men fan so I was drawn to Matthew's film.

It's okay. Not enough. Or, I was left feeling like I picked up a magazine with great cover teasers only to find nothing between the front cover and back cover. It needs more that glitzy gals. [There are some very beautiful women in this film.] Amy Poehler plays dramatic. She's well rounded, that Amy.

Music in this film is good.

With Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman.

I have watched many, many WWII movies. Some are harder to watch than others.

For me, the scenes of torture in this movie were just too graphic and too hard to take. I had to turn away several times and frankly wanted to leave.

The GF found the movie, on the whole, well-done and absorbing.

CCB, here's my tip if you tend to get wrapped up in the emotional component of movies like I do.....bring tissues.

I found it well done. The particular style of the movie is not something I'm usually a fan of (won't go into it but you'll figure it out when you see it) but I think it really, really worked in this instance.

I haven't read the book so I don't know how closely they stuck to the storyline but I found it engaging even if it's a bit predictable.

What I thoroughly enjoyed was the music. I'm not really a cello/classical kind of person but the music was beautiful and there's some band stuff in there too for those who don't care for strictly classical.

All in all, I liked it.

The General (1927) is an imaginative masterpiece of dead-pan "Stone-Face" Buster Keaton comedy, generally regarded as one of the greatest of all silent comedies (and Keaton's own favorite) - and undoubtedly the best train film ever made.

I went to the library and got Miss Potter with Renee Zellwegger and Ewan McGregor.

It's about Beatrix Potter and her childhood and young womanhood.

I admit, as much as I loved the book as a child, I never gave much thought to the author/ illustrator. As it turns out, she was a very early conservationist. She bought a number of farms to keep them from development. It was interesting for sure :)
