Precious.....

I know I know.. it's an old movie now.. But it had such and effect on me I haven't been to a movie since. It truly was the best movie I've seen in a very long time.

It was an incredible movie! It had a big impact on me too. One of my all-time favorites.

The most recent movie I saw was "The Help". I just finished the book last week; both were wonderful.

Frontline: The Released(2009) NR

Five years after their landmark documentary The New Asylums, filmmakers Karen O'Connor and Miri Navasky return to the Ohio prison system to chronicle the next chapter in the journey of mentally ill inmates: what happens when they leave prison. The film traces the stories of six mentally ill offenders who face daunting obstacles and slim odds as they struggle to transition from life behind bars to life on the outside.

I'm in the middle of BBC's 'Life' series (nature documentaries). It's not quite a movie, I know, but I've not watched a new movie since Captain America a few weeks ago.

Re-watched "Ocean's 11" before work today. I love that through the whole film Brad Pitt's character is constantly snacking but never gets a stain on those wild suits he wears. (Best line in the film comes at the end: "Ted Nugent called. He wants his shirt back.") Julia Roberts irritates me in that film -- which is sad 'cause I normally like her. But they put her in high heels and she just can't walk like a lady -- stomp stomp stomp -- walks like a linebacker through the whole film. LOL.

:1femme:

The movie theater is expensive and I've stopped buying movies OnDemand at home. Cable TV is lame right now. Every movie channel is showing the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise... omg I've seen them a thousand times now. *laughs* We bought a new (to us/used) TV recently, but I haven't had time/energy to figure out how to hook up the DVD player (We are not electronically inclined in my home.). I'm at a loss for entertainment. :( Oh wait... I'll go finish one of those books I'm reading ... *laughs*

Love an import that is so engaging that you forget your reading the subtitles. Don't think the US version will be as good but I'm sure we'll see it... even if just to see a train crash.

OMG I totally agree!!! The movie that won me over for subtitles was "Indochine."

I have said, "I love it when subtitled movies are so good that I forget I am reading along."

I say almost the same thing about Showtime. You can turn it on at any given point in the day and one of their stations WILL be playing a "Twilight" movie.

I do not usually watch comedy's but I say "The Other Guys" and loved it. I don't remember laughing out loud that much for a movie, in a very long time. I don't know if it was where I was emotionally or if it was that funny, but who cares...

La Mission.
Brilliant.

Growing up in the Mission district of San Francisco, Che Rivera (Benjamin Bratt) has always had to be tough to survive. He's a powerful man respected throughout the Mission barrio for his masculinity and his strength, as well as for his hobby building beautiful lowrider cars. A reformed inmate and recovering alcoholic, Che has worked hard to redeem his life and do right by his pride and joy: his only son, Jes, whom he has raised on his own after the death of his wife. Che's path to redemption is tested, however, when he discovers Jes is gay. To survive his neighborhood, Che has always lived with his fists. To survive as a complete man, he'll have to embrace a side of himself he's never shown.

Apollo 18

I love, love action flicks, especially if they have a brain and no; they are not mutually exclusive!

Just tonight streamed "Hanna" from Amazon to my TiVo to watch on my TV. outstanding cerebral action/thriller! Main character is a teenager but it is anything but a teen movie. It also had very good critical reviews.

For fun, yes Paul was very entertaining.

Also loved The Lincoln Lawyer with Matthew McC.

Limitless - Bradley Cooper. I made it thru 15 minutes. I like weird stuff but this was too weird for me.

The Hitlist - Cuba Gooding Jr. I liked this movie. Best synopsis is....be careful what you ask for especially when drinking with a stranger who is a suicidal hit man.

The State of Grace - Lou Gossett Jr. Sweet movie. Very religious oriented. Feel good thing tho about the healing power of forgiveness - forgiving ourselves and others.

Great documentary available on Netflix streaming. If you do not know the story, it is about graduate student Erin Davies and her cross-country trip, leaving the word fag on her drivers side window and "ur gay" on her front hood spray painted on her car. Rather than have the vandalism fixed, she chose to keep it as a statement.

She also stopped in cities in which gays were murdered due to hate. All together she drove 55,000 miles

I recently watched "The Conspirator" on DVD, about the Lincoln assassination. It was a little slow sometimes, but I was surprised how much I didn't know the whole story about the men who conspired to assassinate Lincoln, the vice president and some cabinet members.

If you like documentaries, there is a great one that is streaming on Netflix. At least I think it still is. It's called "Steal a Pencil for Me." It's about a couple who survived the Holocaust, but there is much more to the story than just that. I highly recommend it.

Just watched "Savage Grace" with Julianna Moore on BBCiplayer. People kept saying "barbara! you're drunk" (out of context) to me and I finally know which movie it's from now!

It was good. I had no idea it was the story of the Baekeland family (the grandfather had discovered the original first plastics in the early 1900's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_Baekeland) ... very wierd but interesting story about his great grandson's relationship with his mother.

I usually do not watch so many movies but am a little under the weather today.

In the middle right now of another awesome documentary, also Netflix streaming. It is about two lesbians, butch & femme, that at the time of the movie in 2009, had been together 42-years already.

It is the chronology of their relationship and it is just lovely.

I have a sore throat and a cough so I am on a movie and tea marathon today, I will spare you the oldies I watch for comfort and stick to the new one. . .

I just saw Priest my house-mate described it as better than a poke in the eye but I liked it. The thing I liked a lot was that there was no conventional love story, although there is a love story. The characters have depth that is unusual in an action movie and there is an exploration of sacrificing temporal relationships for a higher calling, which, again is unusual in an action movie. There were also a few examples of nonsexual passionate love which is nice to see. I am a big fan of sexual passionate love but it is not the only kind and often gets neglected. I liked it.

We saw this tonight too. I enjoyed it quite a bit, for the reasons you've stated as well as a few others. I found it interesting how they portrayed the vampires. No glorification or twinkling in the sun. Just slimy, super speedy primal beings. That felt more real to me than most of the recent vampiresque flicks and shows.

I LOVE Sucker Punch. Yes, a wild imaginative ride indeedy. The boy watched it with me one day and after a while he pipes up with " well.. when is she gonna dance?" :sunglass: The overlapping of realities was fun to explain ( and I am not sure still, if I did it well)

This was a good film.

If you like this genre, another Netflix stream worth watching is called INHERITANCE.

I found it very riveting and emotional - especially since his daughter (for the longest time) was unaware of what her father was really responsible for.

Imagine watching Schindler's List and knowing the sadistic Nazi camp commandant played by Ralph Fiennes was your father. Inheritance is the story of Monika Hertwig, the daughter of mass murderer Amon Goeth. Hertwig has spent her life in the shadow of her father's sins, trying to come to terms with her "inheritance." She seeks out Helen Jonas, who was enslaved by Goeth and who is one of the few living eyewitnesses to his unspeakable brutality. The women's raw, emotional meeting unearths terrible truths and lingering questions about how the actions of our parents can continue to ripple through generations.

I tend to do other stuff while watching movies but this one had my full attention as I sat on the edge of my chair going wtf a lot. It was a wonderful blend of who done it and what did they do, psychological thriller, twists and turns to keep you guessing along the way.

One of the best, most entertaining movies I have seen in a long time. Pierce really showed his incredible versatility in this one.

Agreed! That movie f***d me up for WEEKS!

My most recent movie watch was "Hanna". Action packed thriller, worth seeing if you like the genre and you aren't particularly squeamish. Great acting, interesting storyline, suspenseful.

Today I saw back-to-back :

Red (Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Richard Dreyfus, John Malkovich), an action-packed cloak & dagger "comedy"...

Swing Kids (Robert Sean Leonard *Dr. Wilson from House M.D.*, Christian Bale, Noah Wyle), Docu-Drama about the underground movement of Swing Kids during Nazi Germany's reign, slightly a coming-of-age and realization account mixed with History of Nazi Germany and a dash of Swing Music and it's powerful influence on their dissenting youth, with consequence...

{btw, I loved the original Planet of the Apes, I wish they'd give 'em all, or most anyways, when they decide to show 'em...I do wanna see the latest , I was told it felt more like Matthew Brodericks Project X than the originals, I'd like to form my own opinion though.}

The last movie I watched was The Ring, I'm not a huge movie fan. In fact I usually can't stand to watch them, don't have the patience to wait for the ending haha. But once in a while I get a strong urge to watch a movie and I haven't seen The Ring in forever so I though it would be nice to watch it. That and Underworld I always return to those when I'm in the mood for a movie.

The only time I really watch one is when I'm spending time with my best friend and she wants to watch one. It's a great excuse for best friend cuddles. Which she owes me next time I see her haha.

Just got back from seeing Ides. Not a great movie, but worth watching. Nothing new or particularly thoughtful about politics and campaigns. But still interesting to watch the characters struggle with their decisions and the consequences. Paul Giamatti was amazing. Ryan Gosling too. i had no idea he was such a strong actor. i love Philip Seymour Hoffman, and he was good. But it wasn't really a role he could shine in. My favorite similar role of his is in Charlie Wilson's War.

God, Clooney looks so much like his father as he ages. I recall watching his father as a news anchor in Cincinnati for many years. The film is set in Cincinnati, and it was interesting to see the bridge and parts of the city although i swear i saw Detroit at one point (??????). It also had a scene at the college my dad got his MA at. I used to go with him to classes sometimes. That was kewl. So I might have liked it more for those associations.

One thing that bugged me was a scene supposedly shot at Dayton Community College. There is no such place. The community college in Dayton is called Sinclair. My dad taught there and so did I. i kinda wished they had named it. But they named Xavier, which gave me a big wahoo moment.

There is one plot twist which is contrived and unnecessary, and, as i said, none of it is original. But it was well done and serious. Worthwhile.

Has anyone seen this yet? I would be curious to know what you thought.

Agreed! That movie f***d me up for WEEKS!

My most recent movie watch was "Hanna". Action packed thriller, worth seeing if you like the genre and you aren't particularly squeamish. Great acting, interesting storyline, suspenseful.

Synopsis (source: www.imdb.com):

"A 16-year-old who was raised by her father to be the perfect assassin is dispatched on a mission across Europe, tracked by a ruthless intelligence agent and her operatives."

I just watched 'Hanna' last night!

I thought it was great. Really fantastic cinematography & sound design. The writing and acting were both quite good too.

It reminded me of watching 'La Femme Nikita' for the first time.

To answer a Question asked, Yep I enjoyed both Red and Swing Kids :)...

Sparkle, french version I'm guessing...Point of No Return was ok, with bridget fonda, kind of "Americanized" but almost ..in my opinion, Plagiarized....
I loved La Femme Nikita...

I'm trying to grab the movie "Hanna" through those 1$ rentals....Damn u College town !!
I'm waiting for Zookeeper with Kevin James, and Fast 5....I also wanna see 50/50 for the Plot and how the Protagonist somewhat uses "Humor" as Medicine

I rented X-Men; First Class again tonight for a bit of 'geek'-type snuggling....I figured if I saw Wolverine's "prequel" why not the Original bunch also....
It does explain a little on how and why each turned out the way they are, and of course it shows that essentially at 1 point or another they were all "Good" and friends, within the cliche of finding refuge/safety with their own Kind...
Kevin Bacon's in this one, so that add's even more to that weird 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon list.

If you're a die-hard X-men fan, you'll enjoy its 'history', wanting even more.

Saw "Contagion" last night, thoroughly enjoyed it although it made me and others not want to touch anything or anyone...and saw "The Help" for the second time...absolutely hands down my fav so far. Had to see "Bridesmaids" a second time just for the helluva of it, and it still made me laugh. I so want Viola Davis to be nominated for Best Actress...she practically stole the show from Meryl Streep in "Doubt" imho...and that takes some acting chutzpah!!!

I can not even call 'Point of No Return' an americanized "version" - it was complete and utter tat and bore zero resemblance to LFN.

'La Femme Nikita' is a brilliant film.

Similarly, I am preemptively recoiling, rolling my eyes and making a face at the mere thought of the (soon to be released) american "versions" of The Millennium Trilogy books/films. :|

I saw the movie "Paul". It was kind of a silly movie but if you're in the mood for a movie that you can just sit back and laugh at because you think its funny or because it's stupid, this is the one for you! I really enjoyed it.

It's about an alien that gets stranded on earth and is trying to get back to a certain place so his mothership can pick him up. Along the way he befriends two comic con fans in an RV that help him travel and elude the government agents looking for him. There's a lot of adventure and hilarity best suited for adults.

I saw 3 movies this morning {or late last night, whichever}

The American (George Clooney), it's claimed to be action/adventure, but I saw it more as a Dramatic Adventure....I tend to try "new" things out at random if I'm bored enough...The ending was slightly fucked...but I enjoyed the movie anyways ( I loved the scenic views of "italian" small villages)

Sex and the City 2 (I was 'bored', damnit..lol) Samantha was DAMN lucky she had miranda by her side in abu dabi LMFAO....and Carrie / Big have srs issues, no?......

The Mist (based on stephen king's short novella), saw this one for the 20th time, it's one of the Precious few, astonishingly itty bitty FEW movies that I would say actually Trumps the books version...and the Music was mesmerizing...again, the Ending is Fucked...but still...Awesome flick ....

Tonight ...maybe I watch all of "The Prophecy"' series.

This is a Tagalog movie, I hope this counts.
This is a story about a mother who's son is gay and has cancer.

This movie is special to me because this is the only movie I watched after Red died. I was with my mother when I watched this in movie theater. Thanks to my Nanay (mother) who's very supportive of me and loves me for who I am. Fast Five was Awesome !!!!
Nevermind the fact the Cast is encrusted with Diamond stars....
Or that the key Filming locations were mainly Puerto Rico sprinkled with Rio de Janeiro for 'realism/security' sake(a lot of the action is portrayed in the 'Favelas')...
It's got Plenty of outrageous Action, Comedy, some Drama, and "sad" moments....
Plenty of Car moments to drool over (the Ladies are just as Hawt , spitfire, witty ...heh ..)
Rather than "street racing" in $$$$$ kick-ass cars, this one revolves around Revenge and a seriously 'Fantastic' Heist...
If you haven't seen the other 4, you're safe...I didn't either, you might be momentarily confused with the "History", if you're like me, you'll quickly put 2 and 2 together with the right "="....

Gonna buy this one....

The American
With George Clooney...
Pretty good for those who enjoy Cloak & Dagger w/o excessive pointless shoot-fests and overtly prolonged who-done-it...

Starring Paul Giamati, Amy Ryan, Jeffrey Tambor, Alex Shaffer

Interesting story about life and decisions we make. Involves high school wrestling which is rather brutal to me.

I got distracted a bit by the characters. One character who played Paulie in the Rocky movies....was waiting for him to do Paulie stuff which he did in a way.

Also Alex Shaffer bears an uncanny resemblence to a young Olympia Dukakis. It's the hairdo and the facial expressions.

Once I got past the distractions, it was a very nice tho intense movie.

Transcendent Man.... the life and ideas of Ray Kurzweil

Ray Kurzweil is a scientist and artificial intelligence specialist who is working towards and predicting singularity in the future....meaning technology will conquer biology and cyborgish state will follow.

I cant decide if this is intriguing or disturbing. I can see the technological developments emerging for which there are pros and cons. Biological cures in the form of technology the size of a blood cell implanted to "fix" us from the inside out is intriguing.

Yet, to see humans as we now know them to become obsolete in favor of AI driven beings who live in a virtual rather than a real world seems bizarre to me.

So much of this movie focuses on "intelligence", the development of, the expansion of, the benefits of....yet there is conspicuously no existence of humanity. After all, we mere humans are more than just our brains, arent we?

I'm having Lawnmower Man flashbacks here.

I finally saw Paranormal 3 today. That ending was...strange.

I saw that on opening night. It was a strange ending. A couple parts made me feel scared, or perhaps uneasy would be better.

I have gone to houses to do clearings on more than one occassion and have watched kids have conversations with beings I could not see. Nothing as horrific as that movie, but still.

Off topic, but gonna keep going anyway... had a neighbors with two sweet sweet little girls. One was particularly "open". I saw them outside one day and the little one, in her broken language, was sooooooo excited to tell me about the little people she saw. She had woken in the middle of the night to talk and play with them. The sounds woke her mother who went to check on her. There she was hands flying, giggling and having a very intense conversation with, what I think were the little people. It was one of the most adorable conversations I had ever had...

K... back to your regular reading... sorry for the derail.

Biutiful - Mexican film with Javier Bardem (love him!)...he is a black marketer of Chinese laborers who learns he has terminal cancer...he begins to attempt to make amends for all his past wrongdoings and secure stability for his two young children...was a good movie.

Leap Year - Mexican film...a lonely, youngish woman pretends to have many that love her but in reality does not...she goes out every night and picks up random men...sleeps with them...they leave. She meets one who continues to come back to her and he introduces her to BDSM. Their trysts elevate to the point she feels she can only be satisfied...and can only satisfy him as well as show her affection...if he is to kill her as they are having sex. Interesting movie to be certain.

I just saw Super 8 and absolutely loved it!! It was written and directed by JJ Abrams (Directed Star Trek-the newer one with Chris Pine and Fringe on Fox-another favorite tv show of mine).

It is SciFi with a heart, PG-13, focused on a group of 11-12 year old boys, one girl (with guts and spunky) and how they're trying to make a movie to enter into a competition. It is set in the 1970's, hence using a Super 8 camera, instead of anything digital. While doing so, they stumble upon a real SciFi mystery.

It has great special effects, is funny & charming. I did shed a few tears @ the end-heartwarming and all that:)

Recommend it!

A Letter to Brezhnev – I first saw this film in 1985 with my then girlfriend and my Maori Grandmother. It’s set in Liverpool and at first I found the accent hard to understand – I understand the accent a little better now, lol! It’s a kitchen sink drama/love story that, although has dated not very well, is still enjoyable, if you like that sort of thing.

How things have changed for Russia and the UK since this was made and how much I’ve changed over the years – my feelings are toward the characters are different now to what they were when I was 15. :D

The Green Lantern - surprisingly decent

Something Borrowed - pretty good

Crazy, Stupid, Love - better than I thought it was going to be

Bereavement - just started watching it, so far..creepy and mildly disturbing..

I watched Water For Elephants earlier in the week - think I would have been less disappointed if I hadn't read the book first..

Hugo by Martin Scorcse
Wonderful film about a orphaned boy who lives in a Paris train station.
He is, through a complex series of events, befriended by the goddaughter of the famous film maker Georges Méliès.
It is a wonderful film about grief and love and movies.
The images are beautiful the acting is well done and the characters are interesting and developed. I loved it.

I saw it in 2D as I generally don't like 3D, it is offered in 3D and according to Roger Ebert (who is my fellow poo pooer of 3D) it worked well.

On a military kick this month.

Fly Girls - a documentary on the WWII Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). Led by accomplished aviatrix Jacqueline Cochran, more than a thousand women were involved in this civilian group which logged more than 60 million miles ferrying planes thru out the USA, test-piloting experimental aircraft, and training male pilots on new aircraft. Very interesting stuff.

The Tillman Story - about the life of pro football player Pat Tillman and the events surrounding his death in the war in Afganistan. The actual footage of GW Bush administration members "testifying" in a "congressional inquiry" is guaranteed to piss any viewer off.

The Shock Doctrine

Documentary on the implementation of the economic theories of Milton Friedman and his crew at the U of Chicago. These theories posulate that successful free market capitalism depends on deregulation, privatization of the infrastructure, union busting, intimidation and coercion, tax cuts etc - sound familiar?

It highlights how this "disaster" capitalism i.e. inflicting capitalism after inflicting a "disaster" was implimented in Chile (and other SA countries), Russia( Gorbachev-Yeltzin era), Great Britian(Thatcher era), and the USA (Nixon -Obama).

It also shows how this ideology has repeatedly made billionaires out of a select few while wreaking economic havoc on the masses.

Had to watch it in segments. Stopped when I hit the wtf stage of comprehension.

Good stuff given the upcoming election season.

The Director of 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy': 'It's a Demanding Film'
By Robert Levin
An interview with Tomas Alfredson about his adaptation of John le Carré’s best-selling novel

It’s been helmed by Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson, whose similarly subdued adolescent vampire romance Let the Right One In (2008) earned major accolades while inspiring an acclaimed American remake. So it’s no surprise that the story of George Smiley (Gary Oldman) investigating a Soviet mole at the top of MI6 is rendered in pauses and close-up shots: It explores the burdens of silence and the mysteries in what’s left unsaid.

Gone from this adaptation, written by Bridget O’Connor and Peter Straughan, are the genre’s usual propulsive narrative techniques, like the fast-moving action scene. Instead, there’s a general sense that the filmmaker wants you to do the work, to make the connections that foster an understanding of the combustible shared history of Smiley and his cohorts. Here, Alfredson speaks about his attraction to the material, the process of assembling his all-star cast (Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Tom Hardy are among the many notables) and more. The film opens in Los Angeles and New York today, and heads to wider release in the weeks to come.

What drew you to the material, especially given that the novel already had been brought to the screen in an acclaimed miniseries?

It was the book itself, of course. And also I remember the miniseries, when I must have been 10, 11-years old, seeing it. I didn’t understand much of it, but it was a very intriguing and interesting world to watch. It was also the people that wanted to do it with me, the production company and Mr. le Carré himself. "It is a demanding film. I want it to be demanding."

What about the draw of making a quiet, subtle spy thriller?

I don’t consider this a spy thriller, really. It’s much more about the victims of the Cold War and the sacrifices they made. That was what interested me the most — to actually try to understand what they suffered, these people. For instance, there was a very gripping detail John le Carré described for me: Some of the spies were decorated by the Queen. She would put a medal on their chests and ten minutes afterwards someone would take it away and hide it in a cupboard. I thought that was so, so touching and cruel, and really interesting, what they had to carry.

There is a lot of interesting stuff to explore in silence. If I would, for instance, ask you a question and you don’t answer me, that is also an answer. Silence between people is a very useful cinematic element.

What would you say to the possibility that some audience members might expect something more conventional and leave the film feeling perplexed?

A lot of people involved in the making of films are obsessed with clarity. I think it’s much more interesting to invite the audience to be an active partner in creating the experience. I really love the idea of trusting the audience to look upon them as adults that can have ideas themselves of what’s happening.

It is a demanding film. I want it to be demanding. And it’s quite true to the book as well. If you compare, there are so many films that decide for you what to feel and what to think and what you see. Film can be very decisive for you, but I believe that the more open you get the more the viewer can participate. But it’s not an easy film to watch. We haven’t promised anything else.

Smiley is a tough part to cast for a lot of reasons. What led you to Gary Oldman?

It was very hard to come up with the right idea of who to play Smiley. We struggled with it for six months or something. We almost said, “Let’s not do this. We can’t find the right one to do it.” And Jina Jay, the casting director, came up with this idea and I thought it was a brilliant one, to ask Gary for it. He is like a chameleon. He has done so many and so different kinds of portraits in his career. It would take a lot of courage to stand in front of the camera and have so much screen time without saying so much. And he really knows how to express himself with subtle moves and using his body language to communicate this. We thought that the camera should be like George’s mirror. He’s communicating with the camera. He shows stuff to the camera that he doesn’t show to the other characters around him. So the camera is like his mirror, or his little megaphone.

How hard was it to corral so many gifted actors into the same movie?

It was quite easy after we found Gary and he accepted. It was quite easy to get people on board or into a room for a meeting. I think 95 percent of the cast are first choices. It was easy to get them into the project.

In what sense do you think the film is informed by your outsider perspective, as a Scandinavian making a movie set in ’70s Britain?

I don’t think I know exactly what I see or what I don’t see. Maybe it’s a good thing that I’m a foreigner and that I maybe see stuff that people from the same country don’t see, because they get blind to a lot of stuff that is specific to that culture. I’d seen a lot, as a kid, of British television and I visited England for the first time when I was 7 or 8, in the beginning of the ’70s and I tried to recall my memories from that. was quite different from what it is today.

[B]When you make a hit like Let the Right One In, you must be presented with all sorts of offers. In a general sense, what’s your process for choosing a project?

I don’t know. It’s a very emotional thing to choose material to work with. It’s not so important where it’s done or what the budget is. I think a film should have its proper budget and it should be interesting. You should try to see if you can do something with it and deliver something that’s interesting. Otherwise you shouldn’t. So I tried to finalize the work with this film and promote it now and then sit down and have a nice cup of tea and see what’s on the table.

Ready. Set. Bag!

Okay it is a documentary about grocery baggers contending to attend the National Bag Off Championship in Vegas. Love the plaques with the open paper bag sitting on it.

It is weird but I loved this movie. Could be cuz I am a bagger of old who thinks proper bagging is an art form. It was nice to see them show how to correctly square a bag - cans and boxes at the bottom, glass in the center, paper/boxes on the sides, top with crushables. Pack heavy to light, evenly dispersing weight. Harder than it sounds when speed is factored in.

They follow a number of individuals contending to go to the competition which was cool cuz they went from part time teenagers, to fulltime older career baggers, to retirees....all talking about both their lives and their jobs/careers. It's nice to see people proud of their work, wanting to be better at it, and getting a chance to compete.

Yeah I'm weird but I got a thing about bagging groceries correctly.

In the new film "Albert Nobbs," British actress Janet McTeer stars opposite Glenn Close as a cross-dressing lesbian in 1890s Ireland.

wPBxB3kuI-o

Playing a woman who has chosen to live her life as a man was a first for Ms. McTeer, 50, although she has more experience than most people playing women who love women: In the 1990 BBC miniseries "A Portrait of a Marriage," Ms. McTeer starred as Vita Sackville-West, a bisexual writer who had an affair with Virginia Woolf. She later played Gertrude Lawrence, a stage actress who carried on a romantic relationship with writer Daphne du Maurier, in a 2007 BBC movie "Daphne."
[ARENA] Robert Ascroft

Sex Change: Janet McTeer says, 'I wanted to play with the confident air of the cheeky chap who thinks he can get away with it.'

Ms. McTeer, who studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, has kept a relatively low profile in Hollywood since she garnered a best-actress Oscar nomination for playing a Southern single mom in the 1999 indie "Tumbleweeds." She is a major star on stage, best known for her Tony-winning performance as Nora in a 1997 production of Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House," and as Mary Queen of Scots in a Broadway production of "Mary Stuart" in 2009.

Prepping for the film, Ms. McTeer became fast friends with Ms. Close, who co-wrote and produced "Albert Nobbs." Ms. Close, who stars in the DirecTV crime drama "Damages," asked the show's writers to create a part for Ms. McTeer for the show's fifth and final season, which airs this summer. In February she will appear in "The Woman in Black" with Daniel Radcliffe.

The Wall Street Journal: How do you see your character, Hubert?

Ms. McTeer: I always thought of Hubert as someone who considers herself not to be in a category, not in a pigeonhole, not with a label…. Yes, she ended up stealing her ex-husband's coat and getting a job and surviving [by passing as a man], but I am sure she did all of this without saying "I'm a gay woman." I am sure she had no idea what that concept even was. People didn't discuss it. And I imagine that she did it to feel safe and ended up feeling very comfortable.

See a clip from the film "Albert Nobbs" starring Glenn Close. Video courtesy Roadside Attractions.

Could you talk about your research?

Years ago I played [Sackville-West], and she wrote about this, saying she was always happier with girls but she got married because that's what one does. So when she had a relationship with her first girlfriend it was such a revelation that other people didn't feel the same way.

I think that if you were a gay man at that time, there was more of a circuit, as it were, than if you were a gay woman. There certainly were lesbians in Victorian London but I don't think Hubert would have been part of that scene. I think Hubert was somebody who ended up the way he did, and decided he was very happy the way he was.

How did you learn how to walk and move like a man?

I'd just watch men. Men's center of gravity is different. I wanted to create one of those very barrel-chested, big-hearted men, not a slight, tall, thin man. Women are aware of their chest, and I have a big chest, whereas with a guy, they just stand tall with their shoulders back. There's no vulnerability. I think that psychologically goes into the way you move. I wanted to play with the confident air of the cheeky chap who thinks he can get away with it. There's that Irish kind of Liam Nee-son thing—sort of big and chunky and very real. I kept my hands in my pockets a lot. I have very girly hands and I use them a lot when I talk in a way that I think is very feminine. There's nothing you can do about hands.

Speaking of, what kinds of makeup did you wear?

I had false skin, a false nose, false ears, false eyes and eyelashes. Make-up took 2½ hours a day.

Did you fool anybody on the set?

One day, I had been working and Brendan Gleeson [the actor who plays Dr. Holloran in the film] just arrived. He got out of the car and I just looked at him and nodded. He looked at me like, "Oh, I'm supposed to know who that is, but I don't." And I just smiled—for one split second I got him.

You and Glenn Close never worked together before. How did you first meet?

I was on Broadway doing "Mary Stuart" and she came to see the play with her daughter and after we had a chat. She said "I've got this script," and the following week she sent it. At the time, shooting was going to begin relatively soon, but it wound up being a good year and a half before she got the money together, during which time we'd meet and have coffee and we went off to do loads of prosthetic fittings and everything. By the time we actually started rehearsals we got to know each other a bit better. We rehearsed for 10 solid days, I think. We were in Ireland. We would go back to the hotel, have pints of Guinness and do jigsaw puzzles.

You and Glenn e-mailed each other photos of some women in Latvia. What was that about?

There's this culture in Latvia where if the family didn't have any boys, the women would live their lives as men. We started thinking, if you live your whole life as a man, what does that do to you? What does that do to your face? The lack of product, the lack of care. We've all got lovely skin, with blush and lipstick and everything. Up in Maine you see some of these women who are fishermen with unbelievable skin—the veins and the wrinkles. You can't fake that.

In a certain type of film like "Shakespeare in Love" [in which Gwyneth Paltrow dresses in drag] or "Pirates of the Caribbean" [with Keira Knightley], it doesn't matter as much if they are believable—they still look gorgeous. We wanted to really create a scenario when you could genuinely believe this character was a man. Also, we weren't actually playing men, so we couldn't fake an Adam's apple or stubble.

The Internet is packed with speculation about your sexual orientation.

I've always thought if you watch the performance and you don't know about the person, then you only see the performance. It's got nothing to do with me not being open about my private life. I could care less. I just want people to focus on the performance. Otherwise you say, "I know this person just had a divorce. I know that person just had a baby." You are putting what you know about the performer onto the character. That's not right.

It is a fantastic piece of work, and is immediately by far my my favorite film of all time. I really couldn't say enough good things about it so I'll just end by saying that all other films are 'B' movies in my mind after seeing it.

We saw it last night. I loved it. I thought it was really suspenseful and well made. Rooney Mara's performance.....I can't say enough good things about it. She was fantastic, she was mesmerizing all the way around and has created one of the most memorable characters in a film in a very long, long time.
I would only say that if you are bothered by violence in movies than this movie may not be for you. This is most definitely a HARD R rating.

We also just saw "Young Adult" with Charlize Theron. It was really good, sort of a dark comedy for those of you who have never heard of it. I expect to see her nominated at Oscar time along with Rooney Mara.

Immortals: BLATANT rip off of 300!
Friends With Kids: Meh
Panic Button: Interesting
Another Earth: Sick, and not in a good way
The Rum Diaries: Zzzz....

...given the fact that the movies lately are lacking in quality, and the fact that i'm moving this week and most everything is packed, i'm resorting to RETRO...

Alien (1979)
Aliens (1986)
Die Hard (1988)
Good Will Hunting (1997)
Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Sense and Sensibility (1995)

French...1959

While I have watched it before, many times actually, it is one of those movies in which you notice new and subtle nuances each time you watch. I love this movie! One on my top five!

We can talk any movie you have seen recently whether it be in the theater, on dvd, Netflix...it matters not. Enjoy.

I would imagine that when you ask what was the last movie I saw it was one at the theatre. It's been so long now that I'm really not sure what the last one was. It was either the first Twilight (I was dragged kicking and screaming) or 2012. Whichever one came last, that was the last one that I saw.
How pathetic is that???

Ok good cause gosh, even though i have 6 free movie tickets yet to use, we watch movies on DVDs mostly.

We saw an awesome, inspiring, eye opening one last night. It was an oldie, but neither of us had seen it.....

The Beautiful Mind. About John Nash, the Nobel Prize winner. What a great film. As i said, it's been around for years, but if you haven't seen it...i HIGHLY recommend it on DVD.

Chinese...1997...a beautiful movie!!

Wang is 'The King of Masks', an aged street performer who practices the change-mask opera art of 'bian lian'. He laments that he has no male heirs to carry on his mysterious and complicated art and trade. At an illegal child market, Wang buys what he believes to be an orphan boy to become his adopted grandson and apprentice.

However, Wang soon learns his new disciple is in fact a girl. As tradition dictates that he cannot pass his art onto a girl, he tries to abandon her, but she stubbornly stays with him. While looking at his masks, she accidentally sets his humble residence on fire. Out of guilt, she runs away.

When Wang is falsely accused of kidnapping a rich family's child, he is thrown in jail. His former disciple goes to one of his friends, a famous performer in the local opera, threatening to kill herself if he or any of his guests, including a local military leader, are unable to help Wang. The King of Masks is eventually freed, and he finally accepts the girl as his granddaughter and teaches her his art.

Someone bought me the extended version of Lord of the Rings this summer. I proceeded to put it in one of "those safe places" and found it on Christmas. I am LOVING this series. I have to admit I am crushing on the elf people. I have watched about 6 hours, and am half way through it. :heartbeat: it.

Just saw the American version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It was pretty good but not as good as the original. I watched the trilogy in its entirety while recuperating from surgery and absolutely fell in love.

Catalina, I agree wth you. It was pretty good, but not worth all the hype that has been advertised. I am going to read the book to try and piece together parts I didn't at all understand.

I love finding bloopers in shows (most times). In the high cost blockbusters, I can never figure out why they are there. They must have continuity workers.

(friend told me I would love that job) lol

On Christmas Day I went to see Warhorse, being an avid horsewoman I couldn't wait for it to get here. Some of the scenes were disturbing I had know idea that over 100,000 horses died in World War 1 and watching inhumane and heartless people and conditions was upsetting. But on the other hand watching the bond between a horse and it's person, the intelligence the desire to do anything you ask of them was uplifting and beautiful..

Great film and E had to stop me from walking down the aisle and asking some bad parents if they really thought that their grade-school child should be watching a woman *censored here for my tendency to give away the endings of movies*.

Either way, there are some incredibly bad parents that take their children to films that are violent (against women) and think nothing of it--This practice of theirs greatly diminishes my enjoyment of the film, always.
