Hugo - and am now fascinated by Maillardet's Automaton (http://www.fi.edu/learn/sci-tech/automaton/automaton.php?cts=instrumentation). I also loved the weaving of history with fiction. Lovely and touching story line.
Buck - The documentary of Buck Brannaman, or as my daughter said, "does this have a point? It just seems like a bunch of random video clips."

I saw the "Hunger Games" film yesterday, I needed a couple hours of escapism.
It looked good, the art direction and cinematography were solid but overall I found the film adaptation soulless. So much is removed from the story, so that the screenplay flows from one action sequence to another, that none of the characters (or relationships between characters) are developed beyond surface level. And sadly it sets up "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay" to be the same.
I thought it was well visioned but hollow; and that is a shame because they had good material to work with.

Kill the Irishman.
Based on a true story of organized crime in Ohio. The filmmakers added in real footage about the Irishman from the 60s and 70s and the fight over territory betweem the Italians and the Irish. A great cast including Paul Sorvino, Val Kilmer and Christopher Walken.

I agree, it was mediocre with no reason for me to become interested in the characters. I would have been pretty angry if I had paid to see this flick.

I seen this movie when it first ran in the theater and then again on HBO a short time ago! I love any movie based on organized crime and when they add in real footage based on events that actually took place, even better!

And the fact it was based on real events was very disturbing. I think at some point in the film it mentioned 24 murders!

the hunger games! i went to the movie theater on wednesday for the first time in years to see it with a friend. i was pleasantly surprised, but i agree w/the critiques - it fails to capture the character development and depth of relationships in the books. i can't imagine watching the film without having read the books...it would have felt much flatter.

The last movie I saw with a friend of mine was The Vow starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams. Tatum and McAdams play a married couple who are in a car accident; she loses her short term memory and cannot remember a thing about their marriage. He tries everything he can think of to jog her memory and it doesn't work so they lose touch for awhile, but in the end they begin to rekindle the marriage that they had lost. Its a beautiful story about love, struggle and the promise to love the one your with no matter WHAT may happen in life :)

Pretty eye opening story about two young lawyers suing a huge corporation that is thwarting efforts to get safety syringes(One time use only) into hospitals and other places to prevent medical staff from getting needle sticks. To prevent possibilities of getting HIV and Hepatitis. They also discuss syringes and needles being used multiple times in Africa being the root cause for the spread of AIDS, not sexual contact like the world has been made to believe.

An eye opener about how unimportant the killing of thousands of women, the gross injustice regarding them at the hands of the officials in Ciudad Mexico in the 90's. The misogynistic attitude of the Police Officials made me so mad!

The Hunger Games.
Me too. The first day it was out. I am so not a 'stand-in-line-for-a-block to see a movie' kind of person, but played one that night. I had no preconceptions about it, never read the books and had no clue what it was about. I liked it.
Immortals- This one was far better than "300", mostly because there was an interesting series of Subjects {for me} that didn't feel mind numbingly boring...
The Muppets- I'm aware that to watch a Muppet movie, u should expect some amount of corny feel-good song & dance..umm...this latest one? they'd break out singing for every little damn thing, 3 words out and a fuckin' song..i felt after the first hop & skip in a baby powder blue suit from an Adult guy that slept in a twin bed with his puppet brother {umm....????} that if the person next to him Copped a very long loud Fart with a giggle, they'd sing about its interesting aroma & probably what they ate prior while dancing with Miss Piggy......
Nobody told me anything about this being a Musical, and I enjoy musicals..
ugh..I switched it off after the poor bugger got Zapped to hell trying to jump over Kermits secured bel air fence.....

I finally broke down and watched the Fincher version of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". I was dreading it, and simultaneously morbidly curious. I LOVED the Swedish versions as well, they were spot on.
The Fincher film was not as bad as I anticipated. It looks great. It is slick and atmospheric. But it felt empty. The characters were not developed, the key relationships were not developed, if you had not read the books I think you'd be perplexed by some of the twists and turns of the story. They made some odd choices and changed the story in small ways that allowed them to cut what they felt were extraneous parts of the story.
Regarding the casting....Daniel Craig is a little bit rough and a little bit craggy, but I think he's got too much of that James Bond-action hero quality about his physicality to make a good Bloomkvist, I didn't find him cheeky or charming or sharp. And Rooney Mara. Ugh, I've hated this casting decision from the beginning (Noomi Rapace knocked it out of the park as Lisbeth - who can compete with her?). After watching the film I must concede that Rooney Mara is a very good actress. I enjoyed her performance BUT I really hated the way they styled her Lisbeth, I found it distracting and just wrong.
All in all, its not a bad film - its aesthetically beautiful, fast paced and well made - very high gloss. But it can't compete with the Swedish versions, and it doesn't do the book justice. I have not watched the 10-hour extended version of the trilogy yet, but I intend to.
I also saw "Sarah's Key" with Kristin Scott Thomas. It was a good film, very evocative, terribly sad - about the persecution of the Jews (by the French) in France during WWII. Definitely worth a watch.
And I watched "Melancholia" the other night. I wanted to like it. It has an interesting premise...but my god it was reaaaaalllllyyyy loooooong. It was pretty self-indulgent, arty for the sake of being arty. And yet I was compelled to sit through all 2hours and 15minutes of it. I was kind of sorry I did.

The Hunger Games - I saw it even after the mixed reviews here and elsewhere. While it's not a perfect film, it's a necessary one. My group was on the edge of their seats and very affected by this dystopic vision.
I highly recommend the film and would catch this on the big screen. The lead actor, Jennifer Lawrence, who plays the character Katness, is definitely one to watch. She was absolutely compelling in this. And here's to a film and book that puts female archer with the ability to convey both compassion and strength as the story's protagonist.

Books are more open to individual interpretation. Films present a director's vision.
It's hard to compare genres - operas based on Shakespearean plays, ballets based on stories, films based on books.
For sure, both the book and film Hunger Games are worth exploring.

A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) directed by Elia Kazan. Starring Vivien Leigh, Marlon Brando, Kim Hunter, and Karl Malden. Aliens with Sigourney Weaver. Ripley kicks butt. Is it bad to wait and watch a film I've seen numerous times just to hear the line. "Get away from her you bitch!" :brainsucker: This film was the last of the good Alien franchise, too bad for Sigourney, as an actor, always will be remembered for being Ripley. Or maybe that's a cool thing.

The Avengers...Hawkeye is my favorite, must be the bow and arrows. Then I love The Scarlet Witch, Mockingbird and the Wasp...too bad they did not have more women Avengers. They had The Scarlet Witch, Ms. Marvel, The Wasp, and Tigra to chose from. I think there were more women, too.
that aside, the film was explosive, funny, and Thor is hot.

I just saw 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' and I loved it. Unfortunately it will most likely fail due to the fact it is not all Hollywood Hype. It was a wonderful movie that reminds you to live life to the fullest and to step outside your comfort box as you never know what you will experience. I can't wait for the DVD so I can add it to my collection.

I actually went to the drive-in last night and saw a double feature..Seemed so fun when you were a kid...hmmm..anyway..I saw,
The Lucky One...A romance about a Marine who finds a woman's picture right before he is nearly killed, and believes (due to the picking up of her picture) that she is somehow responsible for him surviving, so he sets out to find out who she is, in order to thank her.
Dark Shadows...I did like some of the special effects, and many of Johnny Depp's lines were funny, and Alice Cooper does an entertaining cameo performance...but, I was kinda disappointed. Afterwards, all I wanted (metaphorically speaking) was a very large, very rare, black and blue steak...it just had no guts...unfufilling...empty...you get the point. :vampire:
Breaking Dawn.... psychological thriller involving a med student and a patient who have a shared past.. very interesting film..

I recently saw two movies. I saw "The Lucky One", which turned out to be really good. I really like how fate brings both people together and by just meeting that girl in the picture, his life changes so much. So good. The other one I saw was "Dark Shadows", which is funny and awesome, if you consider a vampire in 1972. I've seen the old show and really loved it. But, Johnny Depp is awesome. I'd recommend either one, really.

I loved The Lucky One. I thought I was going to hate it and I was pleasantly surprised. I ran to the theater after a class and that movie was about to start so I went in along with forty or so senior women who all gasped and giggled during the shower scene.
I can't wait to see Dark Shadows.

I thought about seeing Dark Shadows, but I liked the dark Dark Shadows versions. When I first saw the trailer, I was interested, then I saw it was a comedy and I was disappointed bc I thought Johnny Depp would have made a great tortured soul as the original Barnabas' were.

One Lucky Elephant
One Lucky Elephant begins with circus producer David Balding's realization that Flora, the orphaned African elephant he adopted and made the star of his circus, is tired of performing. What unfolds is a nine-year odyssey to find Flora a good home. Caught between the human and animal world, Flora epitomizes the harsh reality elephants face in our expanding man-made world. One thing is certain, after watching this film, you'll never look at an elephant in a zoo or a circus in the same way again.
Very well done and very sad.

"Don't Tempt Me" (2001) it has Penelope Cruz and Victoria Abril as angels sent to vie for the soul of a brain injured boxer. My favorite part is that Penelope Cruz's character, Carmen, is a waitress in hell and before she died she was a drug cartel leader. Her punishment as a hot babe waitress in hell, being mistreated and roughly handled by various hell goons is wonderfully poetic. I also enjoyed her performance as a masculine woman or in her case a woman with the soul of a man, very sexy. Oh and in case your wondering heaven is actually Paris.
The Devil Inside... freaky fun demonic possession film in today's "docudrama" genre. Not a bad rent.

Just saw W/E last night about Edward and Mrs Simpson. I was not too keen on seeing it as there have been so many of them made. It was different but I didn't like the flashing back and forth between the 1930s and present day Manhatten and the real couple and the fictional couple. In the end I wanted to see more about Ed and Simpson. I think it tried to strike a balance between the American depiction of the two as the great romance and the British depiction of her as a scheming commoner. The film tried to show them and her as more real and the fact that life after the exile was not the super fairy tale romance. BUt ultimately their "story" is bigger then them and the "truth" is lost in history. Melissa

Amazing AMAZING heartbreaking documentary about child soldiers who are girls. What an eye opener. This doc takes place in Uganda where 80% of the rebel soldiers are children (we are talking 7-19 years old) who were abducted and forced to kill their own families and whoever the Rebels tell them to kill. Of the 80% child soldier force, 30% are girls. Girls who become Rebel "brides" at 9-19 years old. Repeatedly raped, beaten, starved and made into killing machines. If they make it out and back to their villages they come back with whatever of their babies that made it through the fighting. Some have been fighting for over 10 years. They are often outcast as possessed by evil spirits and have no where to go, with their little ones in tow.
One of the girls escapes and is out to tell the world about what is happening. She has grace and a soft heart, i don't know how.
Makes you wonder how in the hell this can happen.
It's on Netflix in Canada, if you want to know what is happening in the world watch this documentary.

Martin Sheen's character, Tom, is a doctor living a comfortable life in California who decides to make the trek after his son is killed in a freak storm while on the pilgrimage. Directed by Sheen's son, Emilio Estevez.

Thrive
Interesting documentary on science and politics and the poweful elite. The maker, a descendent of the Proctor and Gamble dynasty, explores the universal energy pattern in all processes of life, the ways in which this free energy pattern can be used in everyday applications, the ways and the people who have squashed the research on it because it threatened their money and power.
Very interesting segment on following the money in the world of global economics and financial voodoo.
Chasing Madoff
Documented is the story of how Harry Markopolos and his team of investigators pieced together a chain of white-collar predators and revealed some of the most frightening truths behind the infamous scandal.
Fascinating expose of the 4 men who fought to bring the fraud to light for years before anyone would act. Kind of disgusting look at the depths of human greed, the depths of global governmental corruption fueled by profit and the power it wields, the willingness at all levels to turn the other cheek, and the overall lack of ethics in the money industry.
Loved the perserverance of Harry Markopolos, who at great risk to himself and his family, was determined to do the right thing.

I saw it too and was disappointed. I would have preferred to see Hubert Page's story. I wanted to know more about Hubert and his wife, their life, etc. We got small glimpses into his and his wife's story. He was the most interesting character and I loved the ending and the hint that Hubert gets the girl. I also didn't like the explanation in the film for Albert passing as male as partly due to a gang rape he experienced at 15.

We just got back from a couple's resort in the Poconos where we ordered "Sherlock Holmes a Game of Shadows"...which was outstanding...
Oh, and then we purchased the 24 hour unlimited porn package (On Friday AND Saturday  ) which also had its own cinematic value...
(Not sure if that applies to my cinephile cred but we did have one heck of a weekend...)

Dark Shadows in the theater. it's a pretty movie, always is with Tim Burton, and i did giggle sometimes ... but, i wish there would be another one made more like the original series (which i love so much & am a huge fan of) - without the cheesy retro comedyness.

A Fighting Chance
This movie can be watched on Hulu for free.
Kyle is a huge inspiration to me. Despite prejudices, hatred, etc., he fought every step of the way for what he wanted to achieve in life.
Description A Fighting Chance is a vivid, character-driven story unlike any before it. The documentary follows the inspiring story of Kyle Maynard, born with only three major joints: a neck and two shoulders. Not only has he learned to live life independently and without prosthetics, Kyle is now the author of the New York Times bestseller No Excuses and has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live and Good Morning America. With plans of fighting in an official Mixed Martial Arts match – a highly controversial and dangerous goal - the film brings us to ask the question: what is a disability and should there be regulations against MMA fighting when such high risk is involved? The film ends with the climactic fight that will change Kyle's life forever.

Winter Passing (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0380817/)
I was surprised to see Ed Harris in this type of role. Overall the movie tried too hard to be quirky despite the depth of the subject matter. 3.5 M budget, but only grossed 101K; that should say something.
Best quote in the movie: "I just can't believe this is the same man who told his six-year-old daughter that Christmas was a Republican capitalistic conspiracy created by the Hallmark Corporation and that, if Jesus were alive today he'd be down in Nicaragua rallying the Sandinistas. Grace Away." -Reese Holden

Got a couple of movies from Redbox the other night. We watched...
Mirror, Mirror (with Julia Roberts)
and
Wanderlust (with Jennifer Anniston)
Mirror, Mirror was kinda cutesy, and Wanderlust was alright. Both of them were good movies to watch if you didn't want anything too deep :)

I watched John Carter with ONLY's son the other day. I thought it was a fantastic adventure story.
We all watched Hachi together. WOW it was an amazing story of one dog's loyalty to his owner and based on true events. It really got me thinking how lucky we are that our 4 legged critters adore us so unconditionally. I needed a few Kleenex. *blush*
ONLY and I watched Dorian Gray together. It was spooky and even a bit erotic. I liked the combo. :)

Recently saw a campy exploitation film from the 70's called the "Switchblade Sisters" very interesting. It inspired Quentin Tarantino to make "Kill Bill" movies which I'm not a huge fan of. Definitely a great cult classic though I'm sure.

Saw a movie tonight called "The Future" an independent film
Description: The cinematic translation involves a couple in their mid 30s, Sophie (Miranda July) and Jason (Hamish Linklater), whose relationship is on the rocks, and their plans to adopt an injured cat, Paw Paw.[5] When the couple decides to adopt the stray cat, their perspective on life changes radically, testing their faith in each other and themselves.
It is an odd movie but entertaining nonetheless.

The Campaign
Eh... It wasn't as funny as I thought, but maybe I wasn't in the right mood. Some parts were really funny though :-)
After stretching the truth with a spiritual guru, a fast talking agent (Eddie Murphy) suddenly finds his life depending on a magical tree with 1,000 leaves, one for every word he has left. Now Jack's got to stop talking and conjure up some outrageous ways to communicate or he's a goner.
Was cute, amusing, thought provoking as well.

This one may not suit everyone's taste. I haven't seen it for quite a while and just put it on hold to see again. It's from 2002 and oddly, it's described as a comedy, a drama and a romance, which is accurate and why I liked it.

Fantastic film.

I saw Bourne Legacy over the weekend. As a general action flick it was fun.
If you're looking for continuity with the first three, not so much.
In the first ones the protagonists search for his past and the meaning in it gave it focus. In this one that isn't even part of the story, now it's just a hunt for the next fix. (Won't add anything else that would be a spoiler, that much can be gleaned from the trailer).
Great mountaineering photos, shooting stuff, blowing stuff up, and a good motorcycle chase make it fun escapism though.

"The Hunger Games"- boyofweather says it was ok, not a favorite, we need to read the book.
I was like :| and got bored, I know I know shame on me cause it's such a popular flick. I preferred "Lord of the Flies" if we are using children in a barbaric manner...

"Baby Got Back" Sung By the Movies - YouTube
The Hunger Games
I loved the trilogy but did not like this movie. What made the books so appealing was not the survival stuff but the ways in which people struggled to retain and regain their humanness under inhumane circumstances. That did not come across in the movie. I was disappointed.

"Hunger Games" was the most recent movie I have seen. Considering that I don't watch tv and this was the only movie I've seen in 3 months, I am irritated that it didn't go deeper.
It was ok...like "Meh, entertaining" but it totally snoozed on the class issues of richer districts having kids who didn't have to put their names in 100s of times due to taking extra food. I think they really could have done something there if they would have gone deeper.
