How's the KU team doing this year?

#1 for the men's, and the women are not ranked any longer. Hopefully the men will win tonight...and stay number 1!

Can I ask Y'all to say a little prayer or light a candle (or both) for my baby girl? She was taken to the hospital yesterday with a kidney infection......I heard this morning.....haven't been able to speak with her since Saturday. I knew then she wasn't feeling well.

Thanks...appreciate it.

Alright good people of Austin...

I have been trying to get a handle on how Austin is divided up... lol.. the flow of the city, so to speak...

If someone or two or how over many would care to add their thoughts... It would be most welcome..

Questions...

I keep running into these *Gated* communities that look great and are not expensive for what they offer... They do not look cheap at all... What exactly is meant by gated? Are these suburb properties? Sort of Stepford communities? The price has me confused.. In omaha, the further OUT you go, the more expensive housing.. (Except in the heart of down town.. Have to LOVE urban renueal.. eye rolle...) Apts that I am looking at for 800.00 would be at least 1200.00 up here, if I have the lay of the city right..

Is Round Rock a suburb of Austin or a separate city?

What is a green belt?

Is there a part of town that is a good eclectic mix, queer friendly, good bookstores or a library? Where one could find a mid priced house/apt(has to have out door space if apt.. 5 cat's don't cha know..) with a little personality.. (I will take older and a lil run down over a box with no soul) Access to water would be very nice as I am a shrinking flower about extreem heat... (What can I say.. I'm a Northern California girl who has never gotten used to actually having seasons..)

What part of town should I be looking at??????? lol..

Here we have mid town.. Damn Urban Renual is pushing working class poor out, but there are still pockets where you can actually afford to live and have a claw tube bathtub and hard wood floors...

Help!!!!

There are 'gated communities' which can be homes (sort of the golf course areas) as well as condos/apts. The homes won't be cheap, for sure. Apts can be reasonable. Depends on the area. Housing here....well....it's a buyer's/renter's market right now. You're going to get more for Your money and MAY even be able to negotiate a less expensive rent.

Is Round Rock a suburb of Austin or a separate city?

Round Rock is a separate city, but also considered a suburb of Austin. ShariBerry will be Your expert here, as this is where she lives.

What is a green belt?

A green belt is an undeveloped portion of land which makes for more green space....to be backed up against one of those is a plus!

I have found that the closer to the town center, the more eclectic the mix/queer friendly, etc. However....once again, there are "pockets" all over which may provide same. Travis Heights is one of those neighborhoods....about 10 minutes to downtown, close to Lady Bird Lake (aka Colorado River) and lies between I-35 & Congress.....neat area, but can also be rather pricey.

What part of town should I be looking at??????? lol..

Depends on what You want! :D I think finding a savvy realtor would be the key.

Here we have mid town.. Damn Urban Renual is pushing working class poor out, but there are still pockets where you can actually afford to live and have a claw tube bathtub and hard wood floors...

Help!!!!

Don't know if this was helpful to You or not.....I'm thinking here, the further OUT You go, the cheaper it's going to be.

A few questions have to be answered first
1. Are you more of a north or south of the river type
2. east or west of mopac type
3. or are you more a south Dallas type

Hee hee just kidding...Austin joke. :cracked:

Like Diva said the closer to downtown is going to be more exspensive. Right now downtown and just south of the river are in the middle of urban renewal and so are going to be the most exspensive. The edges of these area will be less exspensive obviously.

But by what you have exspressed to be looking for I would suggest that you look in the area north of 24th street up to Koening ln/fm 2222, with loop 1/mopac to Airport blvd/loop 111 being your west/east borders. In this area I think you will find the $$$ is right and the places have character.

As far as the water issue goes that is plenty of that; the Colorado river runs right through the center of town. Austin is bordered by lakes and rivers that are as close as 20 minutes away to a couple of hours. There is no shortage of water fun here...well unless we are in a drought!! hee hee

In all fairness there is so much going on in all areas of Austin as far as music, food, entertainment, shopping that, with the exceptions, there arent really bad areas to live in here.

Probably more then you wanted to know but there it is:byebye:

Rent at first... I belive in living together before the long term commitment.. lol

I would love a house over an apt.. I miss having a yard to fuss over.. but we will see what we can afford house wise

I can tell you this.

For a house to rent in Austin, you're looking at a minimum of $1100 a month. Anything lower than that, and you're going to be in a neighborhood you don't want. $1100 will probably get you something like a 3/1 with about 800ish to 900ish square feet. In one of the trendier, closer-to-town neighborhoods, you're looking at about $1600...and that's an 'up and coming' trendy neighborhood...not the established trendy neighborhoods like South Congress. If you go out toward Pflugerville or Round Rock (aka South Dallas), you'll get about 1300 square feet for about $1100 to $1200 and up.

I can say this with relative assuredness as Mahhh Woman and I have been looking at new rentals for the last couple of months. We have not only done the paper and craigslist, but we've also driven around and looked at houses. It's getting pricey in these parts.

Also be very aware of your tenant rights here in Texas...they're basically non-existent (compared to other states). You can research this online. Apartment complexes take advantage of newcomers not being familiar with the laws, and they'll get you in added fees and such. Really really read the fine print of your lease...especially if you decide on an apartment in a complex. And definitely read up on Texas tenant rights before you sign anything. Some apartment complexes put the most ridiculous crap into their leases banking on the fact that A) you won't read it and B) you don't know what they're allowed to do in Texas. I'm not trying to imply you're ignorant of these sorts of things...I'm sayin' people can be awful sneaky in Texas. It's happened to me twice with management companies where they put crazy stuff into their leases and then insisted I HAD to sign it, because that's how Texas rolls.

Also, are you more of a big box/shopping center shopper or more of a local, independent store shopper?

By area you may not want to live in, I mean higher crime area. That being said, Mahhh Woman and I currently live in an area that gets a lot flack. We don't see the kind of crime that gets reported for this area though. And when watching the news, a lot of crimes get chalked up to our neighborhood when in actuality, it's many many blocks away. While we don't deal with the supposed crime, we DO deal with police officers who are off the charts. They constantly pull over people for no reason. They frequently sit in front of our house. We are constantly lulled to sleep by the ghetto bird searching for 'something'. I don't know if we would experience more crime if we didn't have a Pit Bull and a German Shepherd, but I don't think so. I mean, we have lived here for two years, and the worst thing we've heard happen was a car window getting broken out...but that happens a lot these days thanks to the economy.

In our neck of the woods, houses are mostly 3/1 ranch houses of roughly 800 square feet. The average rent is around $975 to $1050. The houses are poorly built, and were slapped up in the late 50s/early 60s. They're those Sears houses you could order through the catalog. They're kind of more like trailers with wooden siding. We do have hardwood floors though! We have a much bigger yard than most of the more expensive rentals too. The house across the street from us is always for rent. It's a little bigger (maybe around 1100/1200 square feet) and of a different design, but still a 3/1; two tenants ago (about a year ago), it was renting for $1350.

You'll get more space in South Austin (we're in North Austin)...especially south of 71/Ben White (oh, btw, many streets have two names). North Austin rental houses tend to be pretty small especially in areas like Hyde Park (wayyyyyy over-priced) until you get into areas off of 183 like Braker and Duval and 183. These areas are kind of far out of downtown though, and there's really nothing to do up there...you start getting into "South Dallas" up that way.

You can still find some decent deals on the East Side (east of 35), but they're hardly ever advertised on CL. Also, the East Side is currently being gentrified, so you'll probably see more really expensive East Side properties listed on CL. It's one of those areas you have to drive around to find the good deals. Some people are really starting to get pretentious with their East Side Re-do, and they're charging exorbitant rents.

The Cool Kids tend to live in South Austin.

And so you're prepared...our summer electric bills for 800 square feet are between $200 and $300 a month and sometimes more. Now last summer was outrageous, but... When I lived in a nicer, bigger house, my summer electric bills topped out at $400 a month for 1500 square feet (the house was built in the 1920s and all of the glass was original, so it was not the most energy efficient house...but it was beautiful). When I lived in a 750 square foot apartment, my summer electric bill topped out at $80...when you added in water and trash in an apartment, I was looking at about $115 in the summertime. If you live in a house, water and trash is added into your electric bill (if you have city electric).

I don't know what y'all do for a living, but finding a job here could be difficult. Be prepared for that.

The nice thing about Austin is One can really afford to shop local all the time. Local shops are everywhere in Central Austin. We have a Wal-Mart tho. Mahhh Woman and I shop the Wal-Mart for groceries, because I don't like HEB meat, and I can't afford to shop at Randalls (the high falutin' grocery store). We also have a number of independent healthier groceries, and most of them are reasonable. We tend to only do the Wal-Mart if we're going MAJOR grocery shopping. If Mahhh Woman liked to grocery shop more, we could easily buy all of our groceries at local places, but we'd have to hit up a whole bunch of them to get everything we want within our budget. Mahhh Woman hates to go grocery shopping tho, so she doesn't want to be in a bunch of different stores getting in and out of the car. She gets too annoyed with my grocery-ing, because I tend to be slow...we end up at Wal-Mart, so her head doesn't explode.

Rev,

That kind of information is like gold....

Job wise... Mic works for companies that work for the man.. as long as there is crime, she has a job.. Myself? I'm floating right now.. going to see if I can bring in some money with my art work and doing the farmers market with my breads and breakfast goodies.. (there is a major lack of this at the farmers market..) So if we do fall in love and move, more than likely Mic will have a job lined up..

Might Be More Than You Wanted,
Dylan

Something different for dinner/lunch!?!? The Melting Pot (http://meltingpot.com/locations.aspx?z=&n=48074), there are two; one downtown and one north. the one north is probably easier for parking. But it really doesn't matter to me. I was thinking the weekend of April 2,3, or 4th.

Even though that is right around the corner from me, I will not be able to attend unless I can swap days off with a co-worker. I have this dreadful thing known as a job that makes me work until 10 at night. Whine. :)

If this is like the Melting Pots in Denver (fondue places), you will have to make a reservation. It's probably out of my price range right now. I have one of my writer's conventions coming up which means I have to scrape all my pennies in one direction.

We can bring it. Ash may need a bag though.

I'm really TICKED off at the post office, btw. Just got YOUR b'day card that I sent 2/18 RETURNED to me. Apparently the envelope is a funky shape so it needed more postage. I'll bring it tomorrow night. Dammit.

What?!?!?!?!?! Well....neat that we're still celebrating! ;)

Mitmo is on her way home now.. I will hanging out in Missouri for a short while.. (Hopefully a short while) My ever stubborn *Oh don't worry about me* Mother was in the hospital when we got here.. She went in on FRIDAY, but didn't want to interupt our vacation.. (She is ok.. her o2 level plumetted after a bad run in with some amonia soaked towels)

Yes, I did yell at her a little bit, but it's really hard scolding a 92 lb woman laying in a hospital bed saying.. I'm fine, I'm fine..

Little brat... going to kick that butt of her's one of these day..

Anyway.. I'm going to hang around and bother her for a little while.. Annoy her and not let her lift a finger for a bit...

It is with a heavy heart and a yearly subscription to Hoarders R Us, that I must cancel our Sew 'N' Sew for tomorrow evening....

ANYway.....I'm going to postpone our little soiree for tomorrow evening, girls.

ARWEN.........this does NOT excuse YOU from bringing your machines over tomorrow, as originally planned, so I can take a look at them, ok? THAT part is still on. AND, if I can get them fixed, unless you have a project, they can just hang out here until we reschedule, so you won't have to cart them back & forth. Ok? Ok. Done.:formalbow:

will I show my evil side (which I have worked so hard to hide thus far) if I admit to a moment of joy in reading this post?...it's *not* that I can't take pleasure from the pleasure of others, I can (that sounded more dirty than I intended--or did it??)...it's just that it seemed almost Cruel that I should have to miss sewing night due to a few thousand miles...
since I know you'll all have a sewing bee soon I feel I'm not being mean, or a big fat baby, when I say...oh, really, what a shame....

it is a thrill that the red room is done and can be a grand addition to la-darling-diva-digs...it's fun, I think, to go through things, sort out what you want, where to put things and then get rid of items that no longer fit, but that someone else can use...if you want to save them, we can do a garage sale when I come out to visit?...

hope the fix-it shop can take care of the glitched machines...and that you all get to gather soon...

:|

No we will NOT have a garage sale while You are here, NeenBean, because I KNOW You! You will buy it all! lol Garage Sale Goddess! :bouquet:

Even though I view sewing as an onerous chore and was a not-fun required activity for a period of time in my life, and I prefer not to do that ever again except to fix the torn-up dog toys....I once hung with a group who had a Sewing Circle meeting every week. There was never a single needle or thread in sight. "Sewing Circle" was code for "Let's Sit Around and Have Cocktails and Get Silly." That's what I've been calling "Game Night" in recent past. You know, we really SHOULD recognize that the inventor of Boxed Wine (last name Angove, I think...something like that) just passed away a couple of days ago.

He was in his 90's, so I went out and bought a truck load of the stuff.....if it was good enough for HIM.........

I edited to put this important information out here for Your perusal. Seriously, I think we should celebrate Boxed Wine~Oh! next year!

Hi y'all! I am sorry that I wont be down that way at all now. Jim's (cousins husband) sister passed away last night from pancreatic cancer. They left this morning for Georgia.

Hey Diva...so, how did your sewing party for the ladies go? I have to say I was pretty entertained by the last few posts here... Were there any sewing needle casualties by drunken seamstresses?! ; ) Were there any sewing party crashers?!

When I was in middle school we HAD to take home economics and part of it was a few weeks of sewing. Well, I had NO interest in anything like that. I spent a lot of those few weeks doing some major socializing. Our final project was to have a completed apron that we sewed. :knit: Sooooo...I had to think fast and went straight to the one who I knew would not let me down...that's right...my sweet Grandma. She sewed the entire apron for me. I was relieved! Well, my home ec teacher was more aware than I realized...she wondered how this perfect apron got done so quickly??!! The A work that my grandma did, only got me a C on my apron project.

Anyway, thumbs up to the ladies that can use that machine and needle...

give me some cards, beer, and a grill with my bros and I am good to go. :beerbros:

What did it look like?? Hmmm...well, I do know that if you asked my mom she probably STILL has it somewhere and could show it to you. It became one of those funny family stories...haha. I think probably what was the funniest about it is that my grandma sewed up this magnificent apron. At the age of 12, I was thinking I had really gotten away with something and was sure to pull in an A with good 'ol grandma's sewing skills. I remember the teacher saying "this sure is a nice apron for someone who did so much talking"??? as she looked directly into my eyes... :innocent:

Yeah, I'd take Patrick over Harvey for sex, but Harvey for anything else. He's funny!

And alive...which makes him a total W over Patrick.

What a lunch!! Old home week for this old man!! First getting to see my girl Miranda after 3 years, then Charming Texan walks in followed by Body Shot both of whom I haven't seen in...well too damn long!! I'm still high off that joy!!

Not to discount anyone else there, always a love getting togther with Arwen, Pixie, MaggieBluIze, and Oiler41...oh I almost forgot 3 new fellas, KC, William, and Luke!!

Regrets those absent from our table...the lovely ladies Diva and Puplove, and my bro Organicbutch

That was fun lets do that again!!
:cigar:

Agreed! Fun times and good people!

Yes, KC and I bonded,,I do believe that young person has a lot ahead of him,,and I'm thinking we have something on the horizon that he can help us out with! I'll be in touch with him soon for him to meet my sweetheart!

We certainly did miss my sweet Pup, the lovely Diva and Romeo (along with the rest of the Austinites!). Let's definately do it again soon!

KC is the best thing from that relationship I had with his mother. Honestly, the best. I taught him how to drive too.:giggle:

Just wanted to throw that out there and apologize now before it got...well you know.

He just went to the store to get me ice cream. I'm keeping him.:kungfu:

Camp Camp is tonight at Boulden Creek Coffee House - after a rather long hiatus. It's the most lovely bizarro queer open-mic performance night ever. Sadly I'm not in town, but it's highly recommended - and free.

We've got a graduation party and movie night this weekend, so no Pubs or queer mic show for us!

But y'all have a great time, and have a pint for us!

We're here! We have been having all sorts of fun getting the pool ready for summer, putting up some bird feeders and of course, D has been busy with wedding details! I'll be working at my company charity golf tournament on the 15th, but we will make it on the 16th for E's birthday! Looking forward to seeing everyone!
