I bought $10.00 worth of raffle tickets at my mom's Nursing Home today.

All the money they collect for this goes to the old folks for their day trips and anything that else is needed in their center.

The cutest little old man was sitting there distributing the tickets and collecting the money. He must have been in his mid to late 80's. A gentle old soul that you just wanted to give a big hug to.

I asked him when the drawing is and he said in his little shakey voice that he didn't know and gave a little embarassed chuckle. I laughed along with him and said that's ok, I'm sure it's a long time away right?

The prize is a 26" flat screen tv. I don't need nor want the tv, my plan is to donate it to one of the old folks if I win it.

Gotta love some of these little darlin's...

Walgreen's had a sale today on vitamins and other suppliments. At last doctor's visit (and the one before that) I tested very low levels of vitamin D so I bought one bottle and got the other one for free! My doc wants me to take at least 1,000 units a day. Vitamin D deficancy (sp?) causes the human body lots of problems including a higher chance of breast cancer! Oh and I bought a chicken wrap at a Greek restaurant and it was devine!

I got some fucking, Great sneakers...

I call them 'sneakers'...they may have some fancy, pretentious name...

I've been getting shin-splints, so I went to a special kinda store...and the kid brought out the 'right' kind of sneakers for me...and I fell in love...

so, that's what I bought...

and then...apples...more apples, that is...

and some stuff from Tartain...

and, yeah, assorted thing...

OH---I got some screamin' vintage curtains at goodwill...they are going to make great bags...really neat patterns...and, they still have the dry-cleaner wrappers, so they are clean...

and...I got some green leather...and some vinyl banners...and some other vinyl for sewing...and, back pack fabric, as in what they make back-packs out of, also for my bag making...

I guess it was a nina-gets-a-lot day...

I did make some donations to my favorite second-hand store on the way, I feel it balanced out...

I bought a cup of coffee (Papua New Guinea, light roast) and a two cookies (palmeras) to eat with the coffee while I researched this great question:

Why do they call it CANNING - when you are using JARS?

BRILLIANT QUESTION!

I had to check this question out---
(Thanks InfiniteFemme for creating a procrastination moment for me!)

What I have gathered is this: The concept and use of the term “canning” or “jar canning” came about before the creation of the 1810 “tin can”. I also gathered that the French were using the term “can” for “preserving food in bottles, like wine” for generations prior to 1810. People in the USA adopted the terms and concepts.

Thoughts of canning made me re-live my childhood for a moment.

As a child, I used to dread canning time... more than I used to dread dealing with the woodpile :woodchop: or extracting honey :floatbee::floatbee:. The amount of work was intense. (:blues:I already have plans to avoid Medusa during canning season if we move to Ark. b/c canning scares me )

I would always get into trouble for doing something bad with the wax. I recall getting wax on the dog :doghead: AND cat :cat:one year. Wow, did I catch hell for that. The dog was ok—she was a golden retriever like Gracie—but the cat freaked out. I was trying to make a wax caste of her paw. :paw: At the time, it made sense to do this. Well, the spitting cat ran off with the warm wax still on her paw and ended up on the carpet. I learned many valuable lessons during canning--- for example, WAX and CARPET is a BAD combination. :fallenangel:

Another lesson I learned during canning season, WAX will NOT make you invisible if you cover your face, ears, neck, torso, arms, legs, and feet in it.
(I learned that valuable lesson at age 7):dance1:

On the other hand, the jams and jellies were very yummy in January--- minus the items that contained pineapple in them. One of my family members insisted in putting pineapple in everything because it was a rare fruit during the depression years. Trust me, blackberry jam and rhubarb jelly is gross when it contains huge chunks of pineapple. Then again, I may be biased because I am allergic to pineapple.
(:flowers: Reasons not to avoid Medusa after canning is
finished...hmmm...YUM! can I help you eat that? :flowers: )

….back to my coffee, cookies, and outdated textbook…

Pinapple and Apricote will make a nice liqure if not canned right..

Just saying... grin...

I bought a cup of coffee (Papua New Guinea, light roast) and a two cookies (palmeras) to eat with the coffee while I researched this great question:

I bought dinner for someone who was very hungry. He's one of Concord's homeless - a disabled Vet and diabetic. He's always been very nice and polite to me. Tonight I encountered him as I was leaving my office. He asked me if I wanted to buy some pecans so he could buy dinner from the Chinese restaurant on the street behind my office. I countered with an offer to buy him dinner which he readily accepted.

Getting ready to go shopping. I intend to buy some nice yarn hopefully silk and wool blend. I am going to knit myself another scarf; something that won't shed on my knee length dressy wool coat. The last scarf I knitted is very cool but it left "hairs" all over that coat and they also tickled my nose. Not fun. Spent way too much time with the lint brush. I have a jacket made of silky material that will match the old scarf perfectly. I also want to buy some small jewelry gift boxes for the jewelry I will be giving to the youngsters in the family; all old precious pieces I no longer wear and all have sentimental value. Normally I do not like shopping but today is an exception. :)
