i am having a better time at 50 than i did at 40 or 30, and i don't remember 20 but i am pretty sure it was not fun.
i've been responsible for others since i can remember and it sure feels good to let go and only worry about myself now. i am FREE!
i am also enjoying embracing my kinky side, something i have hidden for a long time.
i do wish i had my old body back, this one works but things aren't exactly where they used to be

Definitely had more fun and was more productive in my 30s/40s. Had a lucrative job, owned a townhouse outside of Ft. Lauderdale, my self esteem was high. Had a good group of equally wild friends. We would jet off several times a year to Intl. Ms. Leather, Living in Leather, Michfest, even Intl. Mr. Leather, and wherever else we wanted to. I had full leathers that were given or earned. Drove around in a Saab.
Went on a nursing travel assignment, my leathers were stolen, I was raped and the asshole stole my collection of irreplaceable whip and quirts as well as all my turquoise jewelry. I was put in jail pending court which I pled Nolo contender cause I could risk a felony. Had not done what they charged me with, but it was the only way out. Had my custom made wedding ring stolen. Yeah, sure the rapist went to prison...for 2 years!
Have been homeless twice panhandling for food and a place for the night. Lost my companion animals 1) a wolf hybrid had to be placed up for adoption and 2) a sweet pitbull who was a one family dog had to be put down. My 3 cats just wandered off. My Partner's sister paid for our travel from Albuquerque and refused the animals. Once in the NE, we were housed with Her brother whose wife hated us.
Both of us became disabled, but I was the only one whose SSDI was approved. We live in a small village up near Canada. Saving money to move to a city, probably Albany.
See those 30s and 40s were truly better. I feel like I'm just biding time. My depression and OCD are much worse. Have become agoraphobic. Rarely leave the apartment which is a whole other mess.

i am now 72. I do miss an environment which recognizes that 55 is not 70 and the slide after 70 is nothing like 60 - 70 .
You have no idea how tiresome it is to hear younger ppl ( even 60 year olds) going on abt age being just a number.
if you are one of those "plagued elders', come contact me directly and i will explain so many things to you....most of which never occurred to you till AARP sent you an email to join up.
Some of it:
There's the first moment when the kid at the grocery counter calls you Ma'am";
the moment when you realise you can't recognise a single song at a community gay dance;
the moment when you realise those 20-somethings on the dance floor might sleep with you, once ( Just to see what it's like or maybe cause they have a tiny social conscience screw loose. ).
Sooooo....Age gracefully my darlings; accept it and the wisdom it brings as it comes and only have sex with women older than you. You'll like it. They'll like it too.
And there are some amazing 80 y/o bodies out there, or so i'm told.
(Chuckling) aye, age is just a number, but bigger numbers are indicative of more wear and tear! Even allowing for my current lack of fitness, no way could I keep up with the way our (female) twenty-something instructor could fork-over an allotment (lets just draw a veil over the gap between me and the twenty-something lads on the course!) I've always used Sir or Ma'am to anyone over twenty - does this make me a bad person? :-}

I've always used Sir or Ma'am to anyone over about 40, but lately (I'm now 52) I'm starting to get odd looks. They seem to be thinking, "Who are you calling Ma'am? You're a Ma'am yourself!" It seems to especially happen if they are noticeably younger than me. (Instances in the leather scene not included, of course.)
Has anyone else noticed this?

i use Ma’am and Sir and don’t mind being Ma’amed myself.
Here in the south, Texas ... not sure where you're at... ;) The Sir and Ma'am def flow regularly from younger to older BUT... at least in the workplace it does flow the other direction too... if only as a courtesy.

There was a fabulous interview of Edie Falco on Bullseye this morning. The interviewer was ticking me off a bit, he was borderline insulting in pointing out that Falco's career didn't really begin to take off until she was nearly middle-aged (in her mid-thirties! Really?).
She replied beautifully that in her opinion, her life has just gotten better and better with each decade, and that she's hitting her stride right now.

Aches and pains, bah humbug. My mom taught us all about mind over matter. She was a pro. ballerina through her 30s. Smiling through performances that I would have called "safe word" on. Her right great toe nail never did heal properly. She used to tell me stories of taping up her foot when I started in about taping ankles and wrists doing gymnastics. Made me feel like a wuss, though not her intention. Was just trying to bond.

Oh my gosh, I've have heard horror stories about the pain of ballet! Your mom was a definite trooper, cathexis.
You were a gymnast? Did you have a specialty? I can definitely see how that would be wear and tear as well.

Well, I didn't hike today, but I have to tomorrow...the pasque flowers are blooming and I really want to see them while I can. There's a prairie in a state park not far from me.
I did manage to find a new pair of sneakers, which I need badly. Hard to find anything in my size (11), but I noticed at the shoe place today, there were even a few size 12's.
Making carrot cashew curry for supper.

Far better than playing for a huge plate of food that you are going to leave half of eh !
We sometimes have `light bites` on menus, smaller portions/healthier dishes, trouble is when I go for these I get tempted to top it up with a couple of sides which defeats the object !

They had one of those Ben franklins in lambertville N.J., I loved that place, now it’s some terribly expensive fusion restaurant where you pay 40 dollars for 2 pumpkin ravioli with a tiny sprinkle of rabbit food on top.
I really dislike restaurants that don’t serve food but decorative plates instead; and the whole purpose is to be seen there, or tell of your trip there and who you saw. Food rarely enters the reasons.
I’ll ttake a nice mom n pop diner/restaraunt that has great food, great owners, and you don’t have to say who was there cause you know every body, you r a regular and before you can sit at the table your coffee and glass of ice is already on its way.

I hate those "Small Plates" places as well...so pretentious!

Yes, it's a dime store and it's wonderful... the owner of the building is raising the rent to the point where they are driving small businesses out.
I hate this phenomenon. One of our iconic shopping centers (Toco Hills) was bought about a year or so ago, and they have raised the rents to the place that all the good mom-and-pop stores are moving out. Just last Friday, Bagel Palace closed - the source of the best and most authentic bagels in Atlanta, not to mention the best whitefish salad. They have also closed a shoe store, a jeweler and a pub I liked. The stores that are staying are big chain grocery stores and places like Ace Hardware. This same development company has bought other shopping centers in Atlanta, and they have become all the same, no more locally owned businesses, all chain stores.
I don't care how many Massage Envy chains move into Toco Hills, all my reasons for shopping there are leaving.

That's happening here too. Our Job Lot had to move to another plaza because their rent is so high and we lost the nearest Olympia Sports too. Same plaza. If they lose the grocery store, the whole plaza will die.

Sounds like a few stores here as welll. Toys r us is out amongst other places.

A lot of chains are suffering this side of the pond too. Poundworld has just gone into receivership, Marks and Spencers a very popular dept store reported a big fall in profits, Toys R Us are all closing here too, House Of Frazer are closing a lot of stores and numerous other's all what we call here `High Street` big names. When these stores disappear from smaller towns it has a drastic impact on trade for other shops and jobs. Again its often the rates being so high that leave little profit left.
I live in quite a rural area so often shop on line and also often feel bad about that so I make a point most weeks of driving to one of the little villages scattered about and picking up a few bits and bobs. In particular I pop into the chemists and post offices as I know when they close it can really be troublesome for the elderly to access the services they need close at hand.
And I`ll say I invariably end up chatting to several people along the way, smaller independent shops always seem to have a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere and have time for those who want to chat as well as shop. After all, for some solitary souls it may be the only conversation they have with anyone all day.
That was thought exactly... what's a Ben Franklin? Now I know! :)
What are we talking about? At first I thought it was the new bill coming out but Ben's still on it; it's just updated for counterfeit purposes. Is it a restaurant? Store? Inquiring minds need to know!
Unless... it's a tapas bar... those are wonderful! ;)

LOL I can't wait till I get my 55plus discount on food!
My folks do when we go out to eat but I'm stuck with minimial food and huge prices.
There are all sorts of other discounts too, but most of the times I forget to ask for them!

Show me a place that offers half-price seniors' discounts on a busy Friday or Saturday night and I'll show you a place that truly honours "seniors". I'm tired of being grateful for "leftovers" at a seniors' discount on Mondays from 4 pm to 5 pm.
Howdy Lofters,
I see that we are chatting about discounts. I discovered that in the U.S. Dennys and Ihop offer a 55+ menu. Smaller portions and a discount.
I love it!
Happy Labor Day my friends.

I had my first date at a Woolworth Drugstore, we were both about nine years old. She looked black, I looked white – bad choice of restaurants.

Makes sense! I've not seen them in MS, FL, GA, WA, NY, TX or RI so that pretty much leaves the Midwest.

They had them here in Virginia. There was one that closed only a few years ago in a town up the road from me.

I knew people who had this version, and played with them as a child, when we visited. No I'm not that old, it's just people tended to take better care of things back then, also a lot of things for children then were better made sturdier than today's versions. Of course who knows how toxic the parts and pieces, painting and packaging were back then.
One of the many later versions

I'm feeling so old today I don't think I should be in the loft, try attic.
Yep, I am old but not yet retired.
Folks seem suprised when they learn my age. I guess that I still have a baby face. Ha!
I am thinking about a thread that will help our aging community check in on each other.
I worry about our aging folks including myself. Let's chat about that, I would like to hear what other folks think about our aging community and how we can help each other.

That sounds like a fine idea. Particularly for those who live far from family and/or live alone. I consider myself still pretty young but I'd have to check both those box. I'm half kidding here ... but... I'd hate to keel over and become supper for my cats! Iol Oh yes, I love em, cats are great, but cats are also rude lil fuckers! :p

I'm still here and almost 20 years older than you, 75 in August.
If you are complaining now you have no idea what awaits you.
A few years ago, I was in an art gallery, the gallery was up one flight so I started up the stairs. There was an elevator at the bottom of the stairs and an older couple waiting for it.
I called to them and said "come on, it's only one flight" and they turned to me and said "How old are you?". I said 72. They said "We are 75 and you don't know anything yet".
And so it is my young friend....lol
BTW, stereotyping older women, and me in particular, would lead me to consider you an idiot...some of us just have great genes.

I'm 58 as well, for another month anyway. A few months ago I did something painful to a knee without actually knowing what. My Dr said because of my age it must be arthritis! I refused that diagnosis and started regular physical therapy, hmmm not so much help. I am now starting with a well regarded "Holistic" physical therapist and yoga outfit to do a head to toe re-set. I'll let you how that goes in a couple thousand dollars...

My own theory is that unless you are genetically blessed with good bones, and genetic everything else ( including teeth ) , you're doing a nice very expensive job of pushing against the wind.

Most likely true, but I’ll go down swinging!
It’s been a good decade since my last reset and a stressful one at that so I‘m due.
At least I’m enjoying good health and excellent teeth. :cheesy:

Follow up: Well, I went to the holistic joint twice a week for a month then once a week for a month and my knee issues are completely cleared up. Very different style of PT as compared to “normal” and I’m really happy about it, also fixed an unrelated neck issue while I was there. I’m going to continue going in once every couple of weeks for a bit because I’m working on some long-term posture issues, but I am making good progress there too.
Still getting older, but hanging in there!

Good for you for trying out something different instead of just accepting what the doc had to say. 58 (or 59 now? Happy Birthday!) is much too young to give up on good health. I'm so glad you're doing better!

I actually love turning 60,I've never felt so solid, mentally and free.possibly moving near the ocean as well,as removing toxic people in my life
I'm, trying a new pt/sports med guy today but then trying to access a service here.
National dissabilty insurance scheme.
If i'm accepted, the govt pays for weird shit as it is based on a wholeness approach,so I may phisio, plus a trainer, but also guitar lessons ,maybe they will pay for me to record music as diagnosed with Cptsd, music soothes the beast in me.
My mate in Melbourne has a songwrting mentor paid by the govt.
But all i can do is apply and let go.
I was fit as in 2013,and shit hit the fan in 2014 and I'm still trying to phisically recover.
Mentally my Cptsd, has calmed down,I can even read again and recognise myself for the first time in 10 yrs,I have a great therapist. But also my home life is safe and calming and quiet.
All I can say is I feel maybe the best is in front of me.
ive met a great guitar teacher who is a sound engineer with recording studio, who is a bit kooky lol.
