Yesterday: A phone call from my daughter. She's in Colorado right now, which is quite far away from me, and will be there for 8 more weeks. We've been texting since she got there but between her working 12 hour shifts six days a week and a two hour time difference, we hadn't gotten on the phone. We talked for almost two hours. It was wonderful.

sleep.....

seriously....

getting sleep brought me joy today because I know in the upcoming month, I will be getting very little of it. Probably won't see sleep like this again for a month and a half.... then I will have literally maybe a week to see it again, if i am lucky at all. But.... moving forward, and looking at the end game

A "thank you" note from my daughter. I've gotten some sweet ones since she left for college. Things like... Thank you for teaching me how to issue a solid handshake. Thank you for teaching me how to write a professional letter/email to a professional/supervisor/teacher. Thank you for teaching me how to budget and plan groceries and healthy meals. Thank you for teaching me how to cook healthy food on a budget. Thank you for teaching me manners. Thank you for teaching me to listen to Otis Redding when I'm sad or stressed. (That one she called 'proof you raised me right') Thank you for teaching me to stand up for myself and not take any shit.

Needless to say, the immersion into college and independent life with other folks her age has been an eye opener. This is just how we lived our life together and she's realizing not everyone is raised that way.

Now she's living (temporarily) 3,000 miles away in an apartment with two other people who are working at the same theatre that she is.

Today's note was: "Thank you for training me so well when it comes to cleaning and taking care of a house because dear god if that wasn't on my radar then this apartment would be a mess. I appreciate you"

I asked her if she was going to make a chore chart and she said she's thinking about it. I hope her apartment mates don't hate her if she does.

* waking up to pictures of my daughter opening the birthday box I sent her. She opened it at midnight last night. We have never had a birthday apart but now she is 20 years old and about 2,500 miles away. At least it's just for a summer job. She will be back in reach in 4 weeks.

*Facetime with my elder nephew. His birthday is today as well. I love that they share a birthday. He turned 7 today and we had a good chat. I'll see him all weekend but it was good to chat on the actual birthday.

* Facetime with my sister in law finishing details on the birthday party for my nephew this weekend. We are going to a Llama farm. The kids will all get to pet and groom and walk Llamas. But it's going to be 95 degrees. So the walks are going to be very short.

This morning: being able to house a sweet young homeless woman who has been sleeping in a local-not-safe park for weeks.

Also this morning: A return of a woman who I put a missing persons report on yesterday. Not happy that she was in a hospital that I had called and they told me they didn't have her. But she's home and okay now.

Later, leaving work a little early to get some air conditioning because wow... the heat is just rough right now. It's so hot at work that the walls and floors are sweating and everything is slippery.

Coming home to a sweet card in the mail from my daughter with messages that made me happy cry.

My older nephew's birthday party! We had the party at a working Llama farm. It was 95 degrees out. I was a little afraid some kids would pass out. But they had a blast. They all got to walk llamas, groom them, feed them, and just hang out with a huge crew of them in their primary barn with fans blowing on them. My nephew got one of them to wear his baseball hat and that was such a hit for him.

Wicket storm last night blew out a lot of things, including internet. From 6am-3pm today my music came from my record player. (I always have music on) and it was nice to sort through my record collection and pick my mood.

Then when the internet came back on I, on a whim, found that Alexa will play songs on repeat, and that is awesome too. I mean I should have known, but never tried. I'm not much of a technology person.

I don't have a patio deck anymore, so I've hung both sets of patio chimes at the end of the chiffon curtains rod and when the oscillating fan moves the air in my home, the chimes make tiny tingling soothing sounds.

I also got my LED strings of lights put up in certain areas of the perimeter of my studio, which the LED lights add an ambient feel to my quarters at night.

Even the gigantic red bow I hung on the inside of my front door, made me feel joy and happiness.

Neighbors in my new neighborhood who honestly like me and don't try to get all up my skirt about my life, where I've been, or being nosy (in general).

Just tonight, one neighbor drove by me after I had just parked the car and they waved the peace sign to me. Then another neighbor saw me struggling with my work bag, carrying it on my own, and they came up to me without one word and took the bag and helped me get it upstairs. It's nice to come home now, now that I have really nice neighbors.

They respect my privacy and I respect theirs. It's just a breath of fresh air, the type of neighbor's I have now, and I feel joy, now that I live in a calmer community of like-minded people. I treasure the gift of my new neighborhood. :stillheart:

I responded with:
"Awesome. Thank you for letting me know. I do have one big concern. Can you ask Elliot if he is sure he wants to sign up for a lifetime of people quoting lines from the movie ET at him? Because for people of a certain age, like me, the name Elliot takes us right there"

Followed by a you tube clip of the part of the movie where ET learns to say Elliot and keeps saying it over and over in his slow raspy voice :superfunny:

Pop the hood and check the engine.
Get inside and open every window and the moon roof.
Put on Baby Shark or Star Wars soundtrack.
Dance with his head out the roof.
Sit in the passenger seat and have me buckle him in.
Unbuckle himself.
Get in the back. Sit in all three seats. Buckle into one, unbuckle. Slide to the right. Buckle, unbuckle. Slide to the right. Buckle, unbuckle.
Get in the driver seat. Buckle up. Pretend to drive.

Repeat.

He did do something new with me today though. I let him sit in the back belted in (I didn't have his car seat in the car right then) but I backed down the driveway and drove back up a few times and he thought that was the best ever.

Taking elder nephew shopping for back to school supplies, and then to the pet store to look at Guinea pigs and Tarantulas and then getting ice cream.

Bringing home a coloring book for younger nephew and having him snuggle on my lap to color.

I looked over and Loki is in his tree, dreaming. He's wound up tight in a circle and the tip of his tail and his paws are just twitching like crazy. Next to him is Gracie, snuggled on her pillow in her chair next to him. I love my little critters and I am so happy that Loki's feeling better. He's been so miserable this past month, dealing with his bladder issues. Me too, because I had to clean up after him repeatedly but I wasn't the one in pain. Gracie too, because he's been awful to her. They tussle all the time and it's usually in good fun but he's been really mean and rough a few times.

Luckily, things seem to be calming down. Today he went in the corner box that he's been avoiding since the start of his illness. Yay! It's a sign that the new food is working and he's getting better. Next up is another urinalysis in a couple of weeks to see how far he's progressed. Soon, we can put this past us and get him on a food that won't cause issues with his giant, but very delicate, bladder.

Big combination birthday party I threw for my mother, my sister in law, and my younger nephew.

My mom happy cried twice. First when she found out my daughter and I had a plan for her to sneak in from college for the day to surprise her. Second when she saw I had arranged a sponsorship for a baby Llama in her name. She can go see him at the farm whenever she wants and her sponsorship will help to provide his food and care for this year. She helped him get his dinner tonight. Before she knew about the sponsorship, we took a Llama walk with 10 Llamas and he was the baby on the walk. I kept encouraging her to take a turn walking him and then after the walk she opened her gift showing that she is now a sponsor/extra mama to this Llama.

My nephews were enthralled as we took a walk with the Llamas. Younger nephew ran Llama to Llama trying them all out. Elder was privileged to be of age to be allowed to walk one on his own. He did a great job. He mostly walked the Mama Llama to the baby Llama that I sponsored for my mom. So sweet.

Figuring out a way to get shiny new black kitchen appliances back to shiny again after using them. All the kitchen appliances both major and minor are black, and I love the look but they show every little speck of everything. However I spent the morning working on them until I got a system down pat. Now they positively sparkle, shine so much. :) I never thought I would be this happy as the result of cleaning kitchen appliances. I don't know, maybe it was the joy involved in not being asked or ordered to do it.

After getting the studs on my car today, I came home and my car's electrical system went on the fritz: The lights would not turn off. So I went over to my sister-in-law's house to have her daughter take a look at it. She couldn't fix it, so I drove home. But I passed my neighbor as they were leaving, told them what was going on, then they came right back and spent two hours chasing down the electrical problem and now my car is healed!

Bevi waving me into the kitchen this morning and pointing towards the pond. Our heron was back! Maybe it is not the same heron but we usually have a yearly heron visit. There he stood patiently frogging, waiting for his breakfast to swim by. That pond has provided us with so much entertainment and enjoyment over the years. In the spring we are visited by Merganser, Mallards and Wood ducks on their travel home. A month ago I looked out to see a river otter in there having a big ole' time. We recently had a turtle hatching and now have 4 little turtles swimming around looking for a treat of bread or mealworms when we walk down. The dogs will wade in if it's too hot out as will the horses on occasion. The 5 year old grandson drags everyone down there so we can watch him try his hand (literally) at frogging. Who knew a little spring fed pond in the woods would bring us such joy.

Ordering my glasses today. I'll be able to see in a week to 10 days.

Driving home after, I passed a field with about six horses. One of them was rolling around on his back. He looked like he was having fun. :)

I may have gotten a little joy from today's headlines.

Early this morning, after taking pictures of the moon, I got to watch 4 beautiful deer (3 doe and 1 of their babies) dance, jump, kick their back feet up, run around playing together, and almost do back flips like a bunch of baby goats. They looked so happy and were having so much fun! It made my day.

Later, I had lots of joy as I bought a bunch more stained glass (at a huge discount).

When I got home, I got to enjoy a few minutes in my new pole barn gazebo. I'm very happy how it turned out.

Reading an article my buddy posted on Facebook about gay men taking over the hashtag #proud boys on twitter.

Makes me proud of all those boys!

I found one of these (https://www.almanac.com/woolly-bear-caterpillars-and-weather-prediction#) guys alive. That's not usually the case so I helped him to a grassy area so he can sleep through winter.

The bad news is, that if the forecast is correct, I'm in for a hella nasty winter because he was almost allll black. Of course, we've had a couple of mild winters back to back so I've been expecting it. No joy there.

Voting! I stood in line for an hour and fifteen minutes. I am glad that part is over.

My phone interview went well and I have a video interview on Monday. If I get this job I will be extremely joyful and grateful.

Yesterday I spent time chatting with dear old friends. What a great day. The pandemic may stop us from visiting but a phone call can really put a spring in your step. Joy.

Took a walk...

Took a walk through my neighbourhood and noticed that people are starting the annual "winter prep". We all pray and hope that the seasonal cycles will stay relatively constant but we prepare for anomalies and , at worst, disasters.

We look forward with joy to our "4 season" climate and realize with dread that human beings may have f**cked that up forever.

Our politicians owe us their best efforts to prevent or at least forestall that cataclysm till we can figure out what to do.

If they fail at that, what does it matter what else they do.

Joy to the World.

Satire from the Borowitz Report in the New Yorker...

Susan Collins Concerned That Amy Coney Barrett Too Indecisive.

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Calling the Supreme Court nominee’s testimony “worrisome,” Senator Susan Collins said that she is concerned that Amy Coney Barrett is too indecisive to sit on the nation’s highest court.

“When she was asked a question, she often appeared hesitant, evasive, and wishy-washy,” Collins said. “That’s no way for a person serving in a high government position to behave.”

The Senator from Maine said that Barrett’s dithering verged on being “annoying and even aggravating.”

“The American people deserve decisiveness from their public officials, not relentless shilly-shallying,” Collins said. “This is the sort of vacillating that makes people despise you.”

Asked whether she would ultimately vote to confirm Barrett, Collins waited for a full minute before responding, “I am deeply troubled and concerned by what I have heard from her to date, but would need to hear more before I could come down one way or another on that.”

........

I got to have my nephews for a few hours today. I see them so sparingly now with them in school and all of us trying to stay covid free. We had an outside play date for two hours while my sister in law got to go out to lunch with a friend. I brought chalk and this thing to make snow and slime. We had a lot of good messy outside play time. Best was we made optical courses modeled after the sensory hallways (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-yq-wQfiFw) that a lot of schools are doing. I made them one and then they made another one of their own creation. I wore them out, as promised.

Okay technically yesterday and maybe joy is a bit of an exaggeration but it was still a bright spot in an otherwise difficult day. While out secondhand shopping I found an unopened pack of six Kirkland Signature heavyweight all cotton men's crew neck undershirts and five JCPenny short sleeve Xersion T-shirts also brand new with stickers and tags still on, altogether for about 1/3 the cost of retail. I also found two gently used Dickies Cooling Temp-IQ Performance short sleeve T-shirts. I'd bought one the other day instead of both because I didn't know if or how much I'd like it, but it was so comfy I knew I just had to get the other. Well today there was another so I bought them both and now have three. Though slightly used I actually like the Dickies better than the brand new ones so will just have to see which I like best after they all come out of the wash. Of the lot surprisingly the only ones I'd feel comfortable wearing outdoors are the undershirts because they're actually heavier weight than many of the T-shirts I see both women and men running around in outdoors these day but they're way too long. That's okay, fine for around the house and when I lose some more weight they'll make good nightshirts.

The hours long phone call I had with my baby brother. He's bringing my mother over to see Rico and I, this fall. It will be the first time I have seen my mom and brother since a few years ago. And it will be their first time meeting my future husband. Rico is beside himself with joy to meet my mom and brother. And I am beyond filled with joy that Rico is mine and I am his and the fact that my mom and brother are so excited to meet him. :stillheart:

My boss wrote me such a stellar recommendation letter with lots of kind comments. It feels so nice to be appreciated. Speaking of, I'm trying to think of a way to express my gratitude to her for the letter. If we were in person, I would give her a card, but we're all remote, and I don't want to ask for her address to mail one.

I have this buddy that I met when he did some work on houses for me. Over the decades we’ve become friends. And especially recently I helped him when he joined AA and NA. I was so glad to see him turn his life around. He almost lost his wife Over this and now she is back home.
Today he stopped over and he had a look at my greenhouse that I never got around to having electricity run to it. he told me he was coming out tomorrow to dig a trench and run the electricity from my house to the greenhouse! He isn’t going to charge anything for labor! And he thinks he has enough Leftover wire from another job that he won’t have to charge me anything but if he does, he’ll take payments whenever and however I can make them! I was so happy and so filled with joy and gratitude that I burst into tears and hugged him! This is huge! He said I had done so much for him, this was his way of giving back!
