Hello Crafty Folks,
I have a question....
Curious if anyone has had a table at a bazaar or craft fair before and if they had any hints or suggestions.
Was it worth it (cost wise)? What would you do different or not do?
I am looking at joining a couple this November. And dare I say the last craft fair I participated in I was 8. My best friend and I stenciled gift bags. What a cute memory. We were so earnest!
Thank you!
I have on several different occasions.
Was it worth it? Sometimes. I think it just depended on the venue and what I was selling at the time. i.e I was selling printed tshirts @ pride and made big bang profit, another time I was selling hand made incense holders and made a small profit. and another time I was selling the same tshirts at a gay rodeo and made next to nothing.
Another thing is to watch how much you have to pay for the table/booth -- do you feel that you'll make profit or just break out even?
Recently, I was asked to be part of Trans Selling Art Fair and I paid nothing to be part of it and what I did sell was great because it was extra money for my pocket and the expenses I had to print up for the project.
I wish you good luck on your fairs and sellings this year!! What do you make?
Best to you!

hey Spritzer! I have done many shows all over the East Coast (SC/NC/Ga/Fla) all with varying degrees of profitability!
1. Our rule of thumb was to recoup about 5 times the booth fee to be of profit. (booth fees being: lowest being $30 and highest being $100)
2. Time...your time...is worth something in addition to cost of suppliesso ALL of that has to be factored in. I would mark up my items 5 times or more dependent on my costs put into them, factoring time.
3. Travel, if any distance at all, is a factor (gas, etc)
4. Cost of meals for doing said show are a factor
Doing Craft Fairs/Shows are a lot of fun if one doesn't have a lot of travel, supply costs, and meals costs.
All I can say is to venture out....nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
Supply & Demand is also a huge factor.
I found putting a price below an even dollar amount to be a better "marketing ploy" ie: instead of $20, I would do $19.95. You would NOT believe what a difference that number actually made in selling an item. And that was total price. I had factored in my sales taxes so it was that number totallly.
Good luck..what would you be selling, if I may ask???
Selling foods, etc is a HUGE hassle...health inspections, food permits, and those booth fees are always exorbitant!!!
If anyone wants to reach out via PM, visitor message or psychic connection to Femmenoir or Lady Rain about what their status is for sending me their jewelry projects, please don't hesitate. I am trying but without any luck.
Done!

Okay, I know our latest project isn't done yet. It isn't due until the 30th, but I have a new idea. When would be a good time to present it?
I am ready for the next project :pendulum:
How about after we receive our Altoid tins (the project before the jewelry)? You'll know when we receive them because we'll post about it :)
Back a while ago (September 18th) I had asked about a new project I had an idea for. I am currently displaced and most likely will be moving cities in the next few weeks so I am going to ask if I can present my project idea in the new year.
I look forward to the next project though.

I am still actively entertaining the notion that one day I might just join in on one of these projects. In the meantime, I want to thank you all for allowing my completely uncrafty self to live vicariously through your thrilling exploits of creativity and wonder!

Hey, everyone!
I sent out the jewelry packages today! A few notes:
1) You will all get an extra two back because I never did hear from or receive anything from Lady Rain and Femmenoir. I don't mind waiting as long as is needed if told but since I wasn't even getting responses back from them I just had to give up after a certain amount of time. Thanks to those who also tried to reach out to them.
2) Tommi you made an extra for someone who wasn't in the project, Pixie. I think that is the second time you have done that, and it is very sweet :). I sent it back to you.
3) Gemme didn't attach names to her projects, so hers are the cute woven friendship bracelets. I think everyone else labeled theirs who they are from, and some people created special made pieces for individuals.
4) You will love it all! Every person chose something different! Thanks for participating!

So I'm thinking about the next project. I was hoping we'd get our tins from the project (wrangled by Lady Rain) before the jewelry project, but we haven't yet, so maybe we just need to move on. I actually have no doubt that at some point Lady Rain will send us our tins because she's someone who disappears for awhile but ultimately reappears. I will have to do a Rain dance :). Seriously, hope everything is okay with you, Lady Rain. We love and worry about you.
I know Laruss mentioned a project for January. Do we want to wait until then given the busy holiday season? Do we want ahk to host a low-maintenance postcard/photo project in between if he is still interested? What do you all think?

I'd be up for low maintenance, non time intensive project during the holiday season.

It's autumn, soon Thanksgiving. :turkeyday: How about a short sign up time, something simple as an autumn leaf, a colorful carcboard card, around Thanksgiving.
Then , like the New Year we get back on track. I agree about moving on without my rusty stuck together tins.

HI.
Here I am-- thanks to Peach for giving me an heads up that folks are interested. So who would be interested in a small post card exchange. The one I was thinking about would be: Your World. You take a photograph of "your world" (could be your living room, your work space, your car, your family -- anything that you feel is part of you) and send it to each one who ever is joining.
The last one I did, I took several different pics, wrote on the back of what I was taking a pic of, and who I was, and sent them out randomly. If you use a reg size photo (4x6) all you would need is a postcard stamp --- (.32).
So how does that sound? Sound like your cup of tea? :tea: :wine: or glass of wine-- If so-- lets do it!!
{PS. -- How do you all do this (as a host or getting them sent out or getting each others addresses etc)}

Usually the way we do it is each person who signs up sends you a package containing one of each project for each person participating along with 5 dollars to cover costs for you to mail out packets. However, because this is a simple postcard project, we could instead each PM you our address and then you PM us a list of everyone's address who is participating. Then each of us could mail out our postcards on our own. What do you prefer?

Everyone on the list-- could you please send me your address & email addresses. If you already have, thank you.
What I was thinking is to get all your addresses together, and then send out a huge list of details. When done with postcards, just put a .32 stamp (unless you live outside of US) and place in mailbox. Since its a small project, I didn't see a reason to do a huge pile at a time. Hope everyone is in agreeance. <--- is that even a word??!!??

Tommi, as always, your stuff makes me squeal. Love it!
Cara, those are the cutest bead-dobbies in the world. I love the colors, too.
Sherrie, I didn't even THINK of doing that. Excellent and tre cute.
Jennifer, SOMEONE is sending me sugar. So sweet! So sweet! For the wrist and the belly. I wonder who????
I want to ask about a particular piece but I don't want to spoil it for the others. If you participated and I didn't mention your name, then I am talking to YOU. I am sooo not going to use that for the purpose in which you intended. Oh, no. That's far too lovely. I'm going to prop it up near my computer and stare at it on a daily basis. Lovely!

BUMP - Sign up in progress below :)
I'm recently arrived here to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, finally getting my 'groove' on, and wondering how I could participate in an exchange. When I lived in China a few years back I was part of an altoid tin exchange where we sent a tin only to the person next on the list. With postage so costly, this would probably be the type of group activity that would work best for me. Otherwise, I would love to correspond snail-mail with a few of you and/or reconnect with a couple of you that I did snail-mail with in the past. I'm open to possibilities. Of course, I have to first figure out where the post office is! lolol By the way, today is Vietam's Womens Day - the street vendors are out in droves selling baskets of gorgeous roses primped up with ribbons and bows. I find it quite delightful. Hope to hear from some of you soon!

Writing with my pen, wearing great neck pieces, and reading my book marked in place, twirling the black N white wrist bracelt, taking my Steelers keys as I run out the door to catch the game.
Som, again thanks for it being fun and full of good stuff that will last longer than a Marshmallow ghost :)

hmmm okies thanks.. gotta figure out how to print out pics i guess from my digital camera.. or.. buy a camera with regular film
yep, yep, yep, and yep-- you can do it any of these ways.
I usually just put a index on the back so I can write something and its a bit heavier and won't rip as easy going through mail, but you can do it any way you want.
have fun! :sock:

Put the pictures on a stick and take them to Walmart or other such place or now you can send them from your computer to places like Walmart and Costco.

I agree.
This is not intended to be an expensive or time consuming project-- just have fun and share.
I will be putting the address list together today and send it out via email to everyone. Thought that if everyone could get their stuff sent out by November 3 -- that would be awesome.
If any new questions, let me know-- or ask Jennifer, I'm sure she'll help out or some how get a hold of me. My time is starting to get easier, I have one more day of classes this week (before I am off for 1 week) and my family is starting to finally being "normal" again-- So thank you everyone for being understanding and for the thoughts in the process. Much appreciated.

That is the plan, with the Christmas season being so hectic the New Year is my choice to start.
Unless... we want to do an ornament exchange? I am already making some so I could do extra.
Anyone interested in that? I could wrangle it I guess. I am moved now so I could although I do have my other project that I would like to do for the new year and I don't have time for it before then.
Any ideas, anyone else want to wrangle if we do ornaments?

laruss,
As for me, New year is best. Holiday season is filled with fun frolic, travel, and such.
Then, I would like to do the spring thing, next one after that.
ahk, we have done so many different kinds of things.
As for what we have done over the past three years, the best way to see get an idea of what, and how it all works would be to start at page one and speed read through the projects.

to the peeps I have received postcards from. Between the recent hurricane and now this horrible event that happened on Friday, I'm definitely on a down swing; Christmas feels impossibly heavy this year. As soon as I'm feeling better, even though the project will be officially "over," I hope to make some meaningful postcards and send them to the list of participants. Some might have forgotten and think "Huh?" but I'll still send them out anyway, just to say hello and to have participated, in some way, in a project that's part of this always inspired and inspiring thread.

Info:
Postcards due end of Feb (Send me a package with all the postcards, and I'll send you one back with postcards from each person participating). Sign up for project will be closed this Friday. If in US send me 5 dollars for shipping. If in Canada send me 10. Please send me your package without any confirmation or need for signature. It's more likely to get lost at the nyc post office while it waits for me to come sign it than it is to just reach me without all that. To determine the number of postsecret postcards to make, check in this Friday and see how many people signed up. Then subtract one (yourself) and you will know how many cards to make. PM me your address and I will send you mine IF we've never sent each other anything in the mail before (almost all of you I have before). You can make all the same postcard or all different ones. Secrets can be anonymous or you can sign your name, and you can let me decide who gets what or you can specify by writing it on the reverse side of the postcard (e.g. To: ahk From: Bleu -- or just From: Bleu or just To: ahk). All secrets must be kept secret and sacred, because while some go for light or not personal; some use it for catharsis. Postcards do not have to be 4x6, just reasonably sized. If you want to specify a "from" or a "to" (reminder: you can leave blank if you want, and I'll decide and you'll be anonymous), but you used both sides of your postcard for the project then just put it in a ziploc type baggie and stick a label on it or write on the baggie with permanent marker. For examples of postsecret, go to http://www.postsecret.com or http://www.photobucket.com and do a search for "post secret" or "postsecret"
I don't know that I officially signed up for this, but I recall saying something about it when the idea was first proposed. that's a long-winded way of asking to be.added to the list.
please and thanks!

If I have til the end of February to send I could take part. I am moving sooner then predicted and I will have an address before we are done. Yay, I didn't think I would be able to take part but I can.
Thank you Jennifer for wrangling this time. I will be all moved and ready to wrangle the next one, I already know what I want to do. I am going to be in the States on Monday so I will pick up some cash to send you.

More thoughts on what happened to those Altoid tins:
Lady Rain had a small booth at a craft fair where she sold them as a special set for a hefty sum.
Lady Rain pulverized the Altoid tins and made a spectacular pair of heavy earrings for herself.
Lady Rain decided to deliver them to us on foot and is lost in a desert somewhere.

just found this thread this morning - as I browse while having my coffee and trying not to slip in a cold meds induced state of unconsciousness...lol
i don't know that I would call myself an artist - but I do enjoy - all things paper related - pen paper - handmade quills and ink ...even have tried my hand at homemade paper -
I do some sculpture and would love to try my hand at the pottery thing again one of these days...
and yes - there is nothing quite like finding a handwritten note amongst the daily diluge of things that fills one's mailbox ... and I am bad about corresponding as I should - having had a fine gentleman friend from New Zealand for many years now - we write lengthy letters about twice a year - and it's nice to see that in my mailbox every now and again...our lives are so busy - and I'm all for "digital communication" it's great ...but nothing quite like reaching in the top drawer of the old desk and pulling out a clean white sheet of linen paper and some fine ink to write to your love - or to an old friend - or maybe even a new friend...
As always - just my two cents worth...

_________BECAUSE sending a letter is the next best thing to showing up personally at someone’s door (and yet somehow less intrusive and yet more mysterious) ... Ink from your pen touches the stationary, your fingers touch the paper, your saliva seals the envelope. Something tangible from your world travels through machines and hands, and deposits itself in another’s mailbox. Your letter is then carried inside as an invited guest. The paper that was sitting on your desk, now sits on another’s. The recipient handles the paper that you handled. Letters create a connection that modern, impersonal forms of communication will never approach...so why not even today ...just write...:writer:

There is nothing else but pure thought and effort in something handwritten. Nothing too short or too small, depending on the words, can make your heart sing. :) It is a token of romance. _________BECAUSE sending a letter is the next best thing to showing up personally at someone’s door (and yet somehow less intrusive and yet more mysterious) ... My grandfather introduced me to the joy of the fountain pen - I have collected several over the years - and even enjoy the magazine (just) for that ... something about how the flow of the ink - glides over the paper ... I've toyed with making my own inks now and then ... and making my own quills...something I've yet to perfect ... but I try it now and again.

I like to rescue them from flea markets and thrift stores, get them functional again... I love the Fountain Pen Network (http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/) for that, lots of "how to"s including an ink making forum.
And then I write long boring letters to my family who never write back... lol

I'll have to check the link out - thanks for sharing ... I was actually thinking (briefly anyway) - that all of us pen and paper people (for lack of a better term) - should share some of our resources for such ... I know everyone has their favorite shops/online resources/etc...might be fun...whatya think?
The ink aspect intriques me - being a calligrapher - also toying with the idea of some creative ways for stamps and wax seals ... ahh...so many things to do - so little time...lol :) Thanks for sharing.

I got into calligraphy as a teenager. Once I was loading ink into a calligraphy pen and I poked the inner side of my thumb and literally gave myself a tattoo that I still have! It's a little dot of black ink on my top inner thumb. :D

Hi everyone. I am in the design mode of my postcards. Now to select the paper.
I have some very old fountain pens in a curio cabinet, and the tips that are fun to write with. An open bottle of ink around my house would be a blotted disaster with the furpkidz who like to help every time I write.
Here's the link...to some fine handmade pens from a BFP Mmember.

We have someone here on the sight that makes a most wonderful pen. I have several that are just what I wanted, and with the ink that flows just as I like.
Hoping to see a display again at this year's Reuinion. Also a pen can be custom made just for you too.
Stay tuned for the next project. It could be a blast. :pirate-steer:

This part of what you wrote made me smile. I write, and always have, long chatty letters to my brother all the time and he never writes back or mentions them. We see each other in person and have a good relationship but it's just not his style to say thanks or comment or respond. A lot of letter writing is the process itself, or so I'd guess, because I don't stop writing him :D
And then I write long boring letters to my family who never write back... lol

Ooh baby! I got links! TONS of links... lol I'd love to share. Since I'm new to the thread, I'd have to ask if we want to keep the discussion here, or move to a new thread, because I don't want to be a horrible thread-jacker. (Though I probably should've thought of that before I asked here!)

I mail one a week, as well as a few post cards. Not all to the same person, most people get one a month or so. I usually have two or three letters going at once and when I've got a few pages, I send them out. I figure I'm doing my duty to keep the USPS in business. Even if I did buy about a bazillion forever stamps last Christmas right before the rates went up! The funny thing is, my big three letter receivers are my niece, one of my sisters and my mom. They never write back, aside from Christmas and Birthday cards, but heaven help me if a month goes by and I miss sending one out to them! We also email and phone call and skype a lot, but the letters are special. My sister is all "Well, you send such long letters and I can't write anything that long." I tell her not to worry about it, just send me a short note! It's all good!
I'm thinking about getting into paper-making too. Like I need anther hobby/addiction.

I can very much relate. Who I write to has little to do with whether they are also letter writers. It's just who is on my mind and, I think, who I have a history with. Some people are very kind with "thank you"s and that feels just as good to me.

BUMP. How's everyone's projects going? Please take an extra one or two weeks if you need it. For any of those stuck or pressed for time, please don't drop out. It is absolutely fine to write your secrets on simple paper or already made postcards. Keep it as simple as you want or need to.

Postcards due end of Feb (Send me a package with all the postcards, and I'll send you one back with postcards from each person participating). If in US send me 5 dollars for shipping. If in Canada send me 10. Please send me your package without any confirmation or need for signature. It's more likely to get lost at the nyc post office while it waits for me to come sign it than it is to just reach me without all that. To determine the number of postsecret postcards to make, subtract one (yourself) and you will know how many cards to make. LaneyDoll, laruss, and pajama,
Thanks, Tommi! My little flower is sitting on the altar in my front hallway. Not that I have a back hallway. Or a side hallway. I digress. I've been doing a bit of hibernating. My new job is taking all sorts of energy from me, and my muse has been hiding. But guess what? My 90-day probation period is up next Monday! Can you believe it? Time sure is flying by. How are you? How is everyone, for that matter?
Hugs,
Cara

Hey hey cara...I Beangoodhere
Hibernating is a good thing if it is part of self-nurturing and just as in nature your psyche and body can use , like nutrition. Your muse is storing up energy...look out when the time comes. Big smiles, and happy dances as you spin and grin.
Probation over in 3 day, celebrate and let your muse know it's time.
Hope everyone is ready for springing spring. (f)(f)We are going to need all of you

Okay, taking a bold step forward as I'm in the departure lounge heading to China ...... I wanna be in the NEXT round of action because I actually know where the post office is and I'll be able to personally send 'things'. I've had to use co-workers here in Viet Nam and always needed to 'monitor' what I sent. lolol So, please, please, please, would someone inbox me privately to ensure I receive notice of a new project? Also, I require a VPN to actually access BFP here in Viet Nam ..... VPN are constantly being 'knocked out' in China so sometimes my access will be limited and I may not communicate regularly. Regarding sending packets ..... I don't mind NOT receiving something, I just want to participate. Perhaps the goodies I am to receive could be forwarded to someone in our community that needs a 'boost'. Okay, lots of things to think about and I need to get to my gate!

Sorry all.
I've been training a new employee again and back to working 7 days a week for weeks at a time (minus one short day off) and, as much as I love doing these projects, there are other things that divert my attention too.
I had some really neat ideas, but will just go ahead and scrawl something on a postcard and get them out this week.

Gemme, was thinking about this, and if you have some neat ideas (as you always do) and extra time would help we could extend the deadline till April 15th. I don't want people to do the project in a way that isn't meaningful to them. :rrose:
I'm off for Easter so I will definitely, absolutely get mine out the first week of April.
Sorry for the delay.

I want to apologize to everyone. Normally I am excellent with deadlines.
I had originally started making mine and they got ruined, then I tried to drop out due to stress and Jennifer talked me into staying and buying my cards (which I did) and then life took a left turn. I seem to be back on the correct road now, and I told Jennifer I would have them in the mail Tuesday!!
It has been a rough few months, but things are much better now. I hope I am back for good this time.

RE: April 15th (LaneyDoll's b-day!)
I actually meant to write May 15th, meaning extending the April 30th deadline for anyone who needed it :)

ahk, Gemme, pajama, Laneydoll, and laruss,
please check in on the thread and let us know how it's going with your cards.
remember, you can just write your secret on the front or blank side of a regular non-homemade postcard. in other words, don't stress.
can everyone commit to having them to me by the end of april?
and some great new sunday secrets today for inspiration:

Okay! Okay! Here I am !!!!!! LOL So sorry. I didn't realize this wasn't going to be like the holiday cards and I would be asked for an e-mail, etc. Totally my screw up. So now I'm here and thanks to the extension I can make it. I looked at the postsecret thing to remind myself what the heck I'm supposed to do. LOL Okay found how many, yadda yadda. Thanks Tommi for re-posting on the previous page and making that easy. I'll get mine done this weekend.

Mine were addressed and I thought gone. But... I found the envelope in my girlfriends car last night. She had forgotten to mail it. So... I will mail it today.
I have, what is for me, a big-deal reveal that coincides with my cards. :)
I'm a little bit excited about it.
I have run out of cards.... and I only have 1 to go. Going to store later today so I can finalize this project.
Its been fun doing art again, but not so fun telling all my secrets. :|
Ps. How many do I need completed?
