Maybe a Valentine's exchange?
I am quite fond of the artist trading cards, I've missed out on that one the last time, or even an idea encouraging spring? (Yes I'm feeling wintered -out..lol another idea, that I have thought about is.. I love music, totally wrapped up in all kinds of music in every moment of my day, and when I meet new friends and hear what they are listening to, I feel like my collection of artists tends to expand, curious what everyone else listens to? Could we make that into some sort of a project, share your favourites of all time in kind of a complation of sorts? Burn to disk or card and share? ?

I like the idea of ATCs, including inchies and microinchies. Valentine's isn't very far away, so it would have to be a quick one. I do like the idea of making a mixtape (on CD) for everyone, although I think I would like a little more flexibility than just my favorites of all time. I really used to enjoy making those for people, and it's been a long time since I did one, but I always made them around a theme. It was fun making the covers for the jewel boxes too, although I think including the jewel boxes for an exchange would be really bulky and problematic - they often seem to get broken in the mail. There's no reason we couldn't still include the covers, though.

the covers is what made me suggest CD, however a memory stick with your themed choices on it.. one stick, send to wrangler and transfer everyone's submissions to stick and send back.regular postage envelope.... sticks can be really cheap like $4. For a 8gb or a memory card. Or if that is still too much we could just make the album cover for exchange and the music portion could just be an email with links to YouTube for the songs, I would be willing to burn them off and send out.. I don't know. I will go with what ever the masses decides to do.

I also love doing inchies (ATCs that are 1" x 1") or microinchies (.5" x .5").

You DO realize that I have very short, fat fingers right?

Me thinks you are a tad bit of a craft sadist.

My vote is yes to a music themed project but NOT for exchanging cds/dvds/sim cards/memory sticks/etc.

I love the ATCs that we've done in the past and look forward to more. Inchies would be great and I'd be up for giving the micros a try as long as no one expects much (not just because it won't fit but because...as I mentioned...I have fat fingers and they get in the way).

It's too late for a Valentine Day project but maybe someone might be willing to carry the theme over.

Any word on the remaining secrets, nyc?

I've always enjoyed the ATC projects. Perhaps a love song theme? If we pick inches or smaller, I'd want to do a series..like a set of three. I feel if I'm doing something that small, I need more to make it feel complete.

I thoroughly enjoyed the ATC's....was my first time ever....and would enjoy that project...

AND while I like the idea of sharing of music I would imagine CD's OR even SD cards would prove expensive postage wise, esp. on CD's and SD cards to purchase them ? Anyone else?

My vote is ATC's....cause I am so excited to get going again!

Thanks for some amazing suggestions Breathless!!!!!

Hi Clay, thanks for bringing that issue up. Yes, if someone drops out before the deadline to sign up has been closed then they are not excluded from future projects because they are still following the rules.

Breathless, thanks for all your great ideas. I always enjoy valentine themes whether it is Card otherwise. I am also a fan of ATC's. I am less interested in burning a CD.

Now that the secrets are out in the mail, is anyone still up for this? I love the idea of ATCs and I'm willing to give micros a try and I think Besame's idea of a series is super fantastic and would really pull the pieces together.

It seems like we came to a semi-consensus of music or love or a combination of the two and it seems like we have enough people interested to do a decent-sized group.

Breathless originally started the idea based on a music exchange and I'm not sure if she'd like to or would be able to wrangle this, but if not I would be excited and honored to do the wrangling on this one if everyone agrees. This is close to my heart (no pun intended!). It could be Valentine's Day inspired but not necessarily V Day themed.

I think it would be fun to leave it up to the participants whether they did a series of micros (.5 x .5), minis (1 x 1), standard (2.5 x 3.5) or a combination of any of them. I would leave it up to the group to vote on a series of three or a series of four. Any more than that would be cumbersome, I think.

I'm just throwing this out there because I was cruising pintrest tonight while watching The Bachelor (semi-gag) and feel the <3 in the air. If we do this, it would be a quick project and the postdate to drop the finished project would be the 29th of February. It's a leap year, so let's leap into a new project!

I am onboard with Gemme wrangling...:).......or Breathless wrangling.... :)

I can't see to work with those tiny ones...minis NOR inchies, so will probably sit this one out if that is what the majority wants to do....:glasses:

I am fond of all the ideas presented personally & love the creativities of each one here.

Were we to do ATC's in 2.5 x 3.5 I would sign up for that one.

So, it's 5 o'clock somewhere...let's get this party started....:).

Thanks Gemme!!!

I have never done ATCs, although I'd like to give it a try. I have no preference for size. However, I may or may not participate depending on how many people sign up and how many we're doing. If, for example, 10 people sign up, and we're doing a series of 3, that's 30 ATCs, and I don't think I can pull it off with a short turnaround. I will just wait and see what everyone decides.

Fair enough.

Keep in mind, if you do opt to join, that the smaller the card the faster they go. One thing you can also do is make one large piece of something...one large artistic piece...maybe 8.5x11 or 11x14...and then cut it up into the appropriate sizes for the project. I've done it before and it can be far easier to do it that way than to do each and every one completely different.

I know it's a quick turn around but when I realized this is a leap year, I thought what a waste to not use the 29th of February since it won't be back for 4 years.

I love the idea of leap year being used....its 4 weeks away..29 plus days.
Plenty of time. We all mail out on that day, and our fearless wrangler sends back the postmark part with our return art work. That would be perfectly choreographed!

I think it would be nice to have a choice of what size ATCs. Also adding: small can take just as long or longer depending on the detail. With minimal time, I'd vote for only one or two cards for each person. Then people who want to make more can make more. I'll probably sign up no matter what's decided :D.

Now, I understand that clay won't know if participation is an option until early next week. Can we offer a concession to add clay in if it is possible?

Sizes are optional. Micros, minis or standard 2.5x3.5 ATCs. You do you.

Series: It's a valid point that it will be hard to do a typical series with such a short turn around, so let's do a pairing versus a series. Two per person. Compromise? Like Jen said, if you want to make more, go for it. It would be a nice surprise. Just don't expect more than 2 from anyone else.

Subject: music and/or love and/or love songs

Remember to add $5 in postage for repackaging.

MUST be postmarked on the 29th of February. This is a Monday, folks. You would HAVE to bring it to the post office or print your postage online ON that date. If you can and WILL do that............welcome to the insanity!

And a reminder:

"For 2016, the rule is if one of us is more than a week late or drops out of a project for whatever reason, that person is welcome to continue posting but is not allowed to sign up for a group project again until January 1st, 2017. No exceptions. This rule applies to participants and to wranglers. This rule must be posted at the bottom of all new projects that are being wrangled so that members can thoughtfully consider whether we wish to commit to a new project. And for the purposes of clarification, if someone drops out before the deadline to sign up has been closed then they are not excluded from future projects because they are still following the rules."

I don't want to add her on the list because if she's not going to be able to participate after all, I don't want to have to get into our participation rules for a situation that's out of her hands.

For now, let's pencil clay in. I wouldn't do this with someone who hasn't proved they are in it with all their heart (theme....get it???...ha!), but considering all the feedback, I'm waging you all feel the same way.

So, get to it, folks!

Right now, we have a list of 9 including clay. That's a minimum of 16 cards (unless you want a set back of yours), in whatever size is convenient and comfortable for you, to complete and send out on Feb. 29th.

I spent two hours in Michael's tonight. My pocketbook flinched. lol

Then I came home and ordered the stuff I wanted that Michael's didn't have.

I do most of my artwork on the computer. Very similar to what I did for my postsecret project.

Would that be acceptable for the ATC project? If not, I'd understand but would like to drop out because I'm just not inspired to do any hand art. I went into Michael's yesterday and realized the hand art just wasn't moving me.

Let me know what y'all think. I can always join in on another project, providing I haven't waited too late to drop out.

It's not too late to drop out if that's your choice. You have until the 3rd to do so.

As a general rule, our craft exchanges are handmade. I went to Wikipedia for the definition of artist trading card and this is what it says:

Artist trading cards (ATCs) are miniature artworks about the same size as modern trading cards or baseball cards,[1] or 2 1⁄2 by 3 1⁄2 inches (64 mm × 89 mm),[2] small enough to fit inside standard card-collector pockets, sleeves or sheets.[3] When sold, they are usually referred to as art cards, editions, and originals (ACEOs). Popularized in 1996, the ATC movement developed out of the mail art movement and has its origins in Switzerland.[4] Cards are produced in various media, including dry media (pencils, pens, markers, etc.), wet media (watercolor, acrylic paints, etc.), paper media (in the form of collage, papercuts, found objects, etc.) or even metals or fiber. The cards are usually traded or exchanged.

M. Vänçi Stirnemann is credited in many circles with popularizing the modern artist trading card in 1996,[5] holding trading sessions in Zurich, Switzerland. This resurgence of interest in the cards spawned the ACEO movement.

Although it tips to handmade techniques, I'm not opposed to computer work. I'd say do you but don't be afraid to try something new too. Maybe some embellishments on the card post print? It will be harder, I think, to personalize them through the computer but I'm excited to see what you can come up with.

Betwinchies are the same concept as an inchie only it is a 1 1/2 inch square.

Twinchies are the same concept as an inchie only it is 2 inches squared.

Rinchies are the same concept as an inchie only it is a circle of one inch diameter. A 1 inch circle punch works well.

I'm torn between twinchies and micros. Maybe I'll do a twinchie and a matching baby! I think I just had my moment of inspiration!

Here's what I think. I am inclined to believe that ATCs and their various iterations should be hand made. For reasons being they can be quite time consuming to make a bunch of multiples and it's much easier to just hit print eight times.

However, we are being very loose in our interpretation of ATC this round. So perhaps a digital ATC could work. I could be down with some digital art as long as I felt like you took time to be creative and expressive with it. Which I believe you would be. So I think my ultimate vote is yes to dgital art, but bring your A game.

There's still time to rethink dropping out. Please do consider, as "variety is the spice of life." Digital art is the wave of the future, and I'd be totally curious to see what you came up with! Probably some of us don't really know what you mean, so it would give us a chance to see that style. And we are a nonjudgmental crowd. Just a thought!

Thanks, nycfem. My hand art is more time consuming than my computer art, though both would pass muster. I'm concerned about the time I would need and would feel rushed with my other possible commitments. So I'm dropping out.

I thought it would be more manageable for me when I joined, but I can see it won't be. I appreciate the time givien for a second thought. :)

I'm sorry you're dropping out, Orema. I was really looking forward to your contribution, especially after seeing your postsecret, which I found very moving and artistic. I completely understand about time, though.

I'm glad you brought up the computer art issue, though, thank you. I am planning to use some computer art in my ATCs also. I was going on the advice of the videos that Gemme posted, wherein at least a couple of times it was mentioned that there are no rules, other than (1) they have to be a certain size, and (2) you can't sell them. So I hope that's okay. I'm on my way now to do some photography that I want to use in this project, and it will be digitized.

I too, am sad to see Orema drop out, and I too feel like I need to say something. This group is about inclusion, and art comes in all forms some people don't feel like they are good enough to make the grade, myself included at times. To avoid the hit print 8 times simply stating each is to be individual and original? The medium to be used was not stated like Besame's 90 % paper on the sun project, and since they are supposed to be Artist trading cards, I truly don't want to limit their means of expression.

Breathless, I can't make this happen without stressing out. I was going to start with computer art and add to it, but the only way I can do them by the deadline, with my current commitments, is to mass produce relying mostly on the computer and I really don't want to do that. And I'm not feeling the hands-on approach either (laughing at myself).

I also have a chance to do some freelance work on Valentine's Day weekend so that's one less weekend for me to work on this project. I really didn't think this out properly but will next time.

It works out for me and I'm not penalized for leaving early and I know I'm welcome to join another project.

I really am enjoying your postsecret card.....way cool. That is what I like about this group....so different, so creative, and so much artistic expression....I am always so excited to get the finished project at hand....makes me smile for days....:hangloose:

All typical rules are in play:

#2. Please add $5 for repackaging and postage. I'll send my address to you all later in the month.

#3. Make 7 pairings (or series, if you are so inclined) of any of the following: traditional 2.5x3.5 ATCs, rinchies, twinchies, inchies, minis or micros or a combination thereof.

#4. The theme is love and/or music. It's your interpretation, so be as literal or abstract as you want to be. Any materials are accepted as long as they don't tick and go boom.

#5. The deadline is etched in stone this time: February 29th. Your goodies MUST be postmarked by this date. It's a Monday. Plan accordingly. Those who comply will receive a surprise in their packages. Those who don't will be sad, because not only will they miss out on the surprise, they will be susceptible to rule #1.

Yes, I've made note of the deadline multiple times. Yes, this is the one thing I will be absolutely adamant about in this round. Come Hell or high water, that postmark should say Feb. 29, 2016.

If the 29th comes around and you are not finished, mail them anyway. I'll go Tim Gunn and make it work.

Is this the closed list? This is a great group of people!

Sometimes that's just the way you have to do it. Get it, lay it all out, see what you need/want and then take the rest back.

I'm excited to see what you come up with!

Anyone do swaps outside of our little thread here? Usually folks send a gift to the hostess (our wrangler...nope, not trying to fish for pressies but I certainly wouldn't turn any down!) but I'm going to send something extra back to you all instead.

That's why the postmark is so important. Not only is it a cool date that only comes around every 4 years but for those who get their packages postmarked on the 29th of February, you will receive a small token of my appreciation. I just ordered what I need for those gifts last night. I'm super stoked!!!

I'm considering getting back to making my handmade valentines after a couple years off. They will be late in the mail, I am afraid - so they might end up being hand-made something-else. I won't claim they are fabulous, but they are fun to make and each one is unique.

One of the reasons I like making them is because people get so cynical and bitter or sad around Valentine's Day, but my first memories of celebrating it were my grandmother and I cross-legged on the floor with construction paper and stickers and glitter and weird craft supplies making valentines for everybody - and I think it's a fun way to celebrate.

Anyway, drop me a PM with your snail mail address if you'd like a belated one. :)

This is true. This project was built around today's date especially but the thread rules still remain.

Today is the mail out date, everyone! For those projects I get from all of you with the postmark showing today's date, you will receive something extra special. You may love it, hate it or being ambivalent about it but it's from me to you as a thank you for putting everything together with a slightly shortened time frame, so take from it what you will.

It doesn't have to be museum worthy art, but it should be from YOU....beauty, warts and everything in between.

Hello all,

I'm very sorry to have to say that I couldn't mail my project today. I have several reasons, but no excuse. I've had an extremely difficult month medically. However, I know other people have problems and deadlines and important things to do, so that's not an excuse, just an explanation.

As you all are a generous bunch of folks, I hope you will accept mine late. I plan to mail them out by Friday. Again, I apologize, especially to Gemme.

Update: I put a project together that is simple but cute and that I don't feel embarrassed to send off to you guys. I'm going to let it dry overnight and send it out tomorrow. Thanks for not letting me give up! Especially Gemme. And sorry it wont gave the special postmark.

Excellent news!!!!

The important things are that you are getting something out, you'll be able to participate going forward and that you are happy with what you are sending out.

I look forward to seeing what you came up with.

Happy dance!

As long as they get to me within a week from today, you will be okay. Later than that and the lateness rule kicks in. Life gets in the way sometimes but if you can get it out sooner or send it overnight or two day on Friday, please do.

I hope you feel better soon.

All,

Any projects that arrive after Monday, March 7th will be officially late and that member will not be able to participate in future projects for the remainder of the year.

Penpallers, I know a few of us have struggled this month for a variety of reasons and real life has gotten into the way for some of us as well. Please do whatever you can to make sure your projects get to me on or before Monday, March 7th. Guaranteed US mail, UPS, FedEx, carrier pigeon....whatever it takes....

If they don't, I will wait for all projects to arrive and send out the packages, but unfortunately those whose art work does not reach me by next Monday will not be able to participate in future projects for the remainder of the year. I was very adamant about the date requirement from the start of this round so this should not be a surprise, especially since we've had the tardy rule in effect for some time now. I'm crossing my fingers, toes and eyeballs that everyone's work will get to me on time. This is a great project and I look forward to seeing everyone's goodies.

There's one business that sometimes gets our mail, so I walked down the road to check their mail box. Like us, they have a box right at the road.

I think we have to keep in mind that breathless is mailing from Canada so it is understandable if hers arrives after today since she had to mail out on the 29th.

Nycfem is quite right, of course it is understandable that breathless's project will take a little longer to arrive.

At this time, I would like to ask for some consensus on the "tardy rule". My understanding was that "a week late" refers to someone mailing out their projects 7 days after the due date - not ensuring that the wrangler receives packages within 7 days of the due date. My reasoning: (1) Since projects mailed on the due date would take several days to reach the wrangler, a package that arrives 7 days after the due date is not really a week late, it's less than a week late. (2) If a person is mailing from a different country than the wrangler, they would not be able to take advantage of the "tardy rule", because the only way they could get it to the wrangler within a week of the due date would be international FedEx, which I believe would be cost prohibitive for most people and unfair.

I believe that the wording of the rule should be clarified. I also understand that it is very annoying and disappointing to receive projects a long time after the due date; I have been annoyed by others in the past, and of course I was late on this recent project (and again, I do apologize for any annoyance you all may have experienced). I believe that fairness would call for allowing a tardy person a full week to mail out their project, and that the postmark should be within 7 days of the due date. However, I was not around for the original discussion, and I may have misunderstood the rule since I wasn't privy to the conversation. Whatever the rule is, I would appreciate the group's clarification. It won't affect whether or not I participate (unless, maybe, the wrangler is in a different country - I would have to carefully consider that); I just want to be clear before signing up for any more projects.

Here is the rule (as a reminder):

"For 2016, the rule is if one of us is more than a week late or drops out of a project for whatever reason, that person is welcome to continue posting but is not allowed to sign up for a group project again until January 1st, 2017. No exceptions. This rule applies to participants and to wranglers. This rule must be posted at the bottom of all new projects that are being wrangled so that members can thoughtfully consider whether we wish to commit to a new project. And for the purposes of clarification, if someone drops out before the deadline to sign up has been closed then they are not excluded from future projects because they are still following the rules."

Thanks for your time and attention.

Hi, GeorgiaMa'am, glad you brought this up. Here's how I would clarify it:

""For 2016, the rule is if one of our projects is received by the wrangler more than a week late or drops out of a project for whatever reason, that person is welcome to continue posting but is not allowed to sign up for a group project again until January 1st, 2017. And for the purposes of clarification, if someone drops out before the deadline to sign up has been closed then they are not excluded from future projects because they are still following the rules."

However, I do not feel this rule applies to Breathless for this current project since Breathless was given the specific instruction to mail on the 29th, and she followed that rule. It would not be fair to ask her to pay more than what traditional mailing costs since she followed the rule.

I personally don't think it's a good idea to say that it has to have a postmark within a week of the due date because then that means someone's project could hold up a mailing out of projects over a week, which seems excessive to me. Also I'd be worried that someone might say, "I mailed it" and we'd have no way of knowing if that were even true. If something must be RECEIVED by a certain date then we know projects will definitely be mailed out within a week of their due date (Again, this project was a special situation because of Gemme's special Leap Year rule.).

In the future, without the special circumstance of the current project, people from other countries can simply plan to mail out by whatever date is needed for the project to arrive on time.

If the majority are okay with it, let's change the paragraph to include the clarified paragraph at the end of every project (the one I started this post with but with the bolded part included).

Thank you for bringing up the need for clarification. It is definitely necessary for future projects.

Nycfem is quite right, of course it is understandable that breathless's project will take a little longer to arrive.

"For 2016, the rule is if one of our projects is received by the wrangler more than 7 days after the due date or drops out of a project for whatever reason, . . ."

Or, we could define that "due date" means "due to the wrangler", not "due to be mailed", which is where I was getting confused.

You know, I had/have the same question. I have a couple of spare cards with me, and one is definitely warped and the other is not. The warped one is painted and the other is not. (Not going to say much more, shhhh) however, the painted one, the base isn't even painted. ..I applied a painted piece and. ...warpage!

You want to get good, sturdy watercolor paper if you are going to be applying anything wet to your cards. Card stock is not meant to absorb moisture, or other kinds of paper. Getting watercolor paper and cutting your cards from there should help.

Okay, you have some options with this.

You can apply gesso to both sides before you start to paint/decorate/etc and that will help straighten the paper out a bit more.

Using dense or high quality paper helps too.

You can adhere the paper to something firm, like a cut piece of corrugated cardboard and that will help it maintain a flat shape.

Another option is to flip the piece over face down and leave a heavy object, like a big book, on top of the piece overnight.

Now, for the other issue.....

I'm all for clarification. In this particular wrangle, like nyc said, it's a little different because the project was based on a particular mail out date versus a particular receiving date. I'm not going to throw Breathless under the bus since her project isn't here yet for that very reason. Would it have been nice to have it by now? Sure, but Canadian/American postal services don't have a history of running especially expeditiously so there will be some leeway there.

It's about balance. If the project isn't here within a reasonable amount of time, then we'll have to revisit that because two weeks is the longest it's taken, in my personal experience, to get a standard package from point A to point B.

As for nyc's point about postage, I see things differently. That should be part of the decision folks make when they decide if they can participate in a round. I always take postage into consideration as well as time frame, materials, inspiration, theme, etc. I don't think it's out of line for me to ask how long it would take for a package to get to the UK or to Canada or wherever and to dish out a few more bucks, if necessary, to get it to the destination within whatever time frame it needs to be.

I think the changes are great because everyone that's considering participating needs to be crystal clear going into projects and rounds.

Just wading in on the date deadline.....I mailed a personal package to you, Jennifer, on January 3rd. My ChinaPost tracking said it cleared customs to leave China on January 16th. Sometimes, those not living in the US have no control over the postal service. Yes, it went airmail. This is one reason I've only participated in projects due at the beginning of July and even then I have sent them express mail as CanadaPost has its issues. Perhaps there can be some consideration as the need arises for those not living on the continental US.

Perhaps there can be some consideration as the need arises for those not living on the continental US.

Do you feel that there has been inconsideration towards you and others throughout the years who are not in the continental US?

I feel we all want to be inclusive of everyone but sometimes customs can really bog things down. I know that I appreciate that you take the mail flow into consideration when you sign up for projects and, as you said, send your packages so they will reach their destination in a timely manner when you are in Canada.

Part of the reason we designed the tardiness rule was how long it was taking work to come in to the wrangler, if it came at all. Just like there are consequences to not meeting a deadline in the real world, we had to come up with consequences here too as we all take time out of our lives to do these projects and no one should have to wait weeks and even months for those projects to go out. It sometimes holds up future projects and really takes the morale down, in my opinion.

I'm obviously not outside of the US, but I do believe that in 99% of the rounds, ample time is given to complete the project and get it to the wrangler. This time things were a bit tighter. If I'm missing something, please let me know specifics as this would help others going forward the next time we have a round that includes international participants.

Should we have one long round with an extended arrival date, maybe around the time that you are in Canada? It's really too confusing to have multiple projects going on at the same time unless they are super short and easy ones, I think, but one long and one short in short succession might work.

I don't see why we can't make any adjustments that are necessary for all to feel as included as possible but we can't draw out every round either. We have to strike the balance between the two.

nycfem
03-08-2016, 08:12 AM
I think it would probably work best if someone from outside the US wants to participate in the project and you think you would not be able to get your project in on time when looking at the expected due date for the project to be received, then speak up before the sign up closes and tell us what date would be safe to say the project must be received by before they get mailed out. Then that date would apply to everyone so that we all know, "This project must be received by May 1st (with seven days late arrival flexibility), no matter where it's coming from." If we don't go with an arrival date as the due date then we are stuck with waiting indefinitely if a project is not received when a person says that they mailed it out. We want to be able to rely on knowing the project will be received within a week of whatever due date has been originally agreed upon. (Noting, as always, Gemme's project is different because of the special Leap Year thing).

sis
03-08-2016, 04:47 PM
Gemme and Jennifer ....... I'm not commenting on whether or not the project is completed and mailed out in 'good time', I'm commenting on the postal system outside of the USA. Perhaps people not from the continental USA require an earlier date or something due to the length of time necessary for it to go through the processing or perhaps the participant needs to consider the cost of an express service before signing up (I've always considered this the few times I've participated).

One of the reasons I choose to only participate with a project during the short window of time I'm in Canada is not only the length of time the mail takes to get to where ever its going but that mail frequently doesn't get over here to China. (Again, Jennifer, the packet BB mailed to me around the same time I mailed one to you still has not arrived. More than likely its stuck in customs here in China.)

On a 'happier' note, I'm relocating back to Canada after this school year so I am indeed looking forward to more participation (at the minimum, reading posts in a relatively close time-zone!).

The projects went out today. CCB and nyc should see theirs Thursday and everyone else except for Breathless should see theirs Friday. They don't even bother to put an estimated delivery date for Canada. It's kind of like 'good luck, dude' and that's it.

clay's went to the new address. I know when you read this, you are going to wonder. :)

Look for a padded envelope. Some are small and brightly colored and some are larger and manila. I didn't have enough of one kind or another to do them all the same. I really think you all are going to enjoy the pieces. There's a lot of diversity from all of you and then I just did a lot. I mean, I lot. Some are okay and some are really, really good but I did a LOT of pieces. Again, I apologize to those who were struggling with inspiration as I apparently took it all.

Intrigued? Excited? Good!

You have wait!!!

Neener, neener!

It's totally worth the wait, I promise!

I realized that I forgot to include one set of my cards when I sent out the packages. That's what happens when everything's spread all over from my home painting project. There's still plenty enough to go around but I think it may have been a subconscious decision since the more I look at them, the more I like them. So they shall stay with me. :tease:

Anyone like Tim Holtz (http://timholtz.com/) products?

I found Tim Holtz merchandise on sale (40% off!) tonight. Unmarked, so it was a surprise when I checked the price checker. EVERYTHING Tim Holtz is on sale at my Michael's.

If you like and/or use Tim Holtz products and have a Michael's near you, check it out. Not sure when the sale will end as there were no signs but it doesn't hurt to check it out.

My thoughts are to do a wax resist on a white cloth/bandana then use Rit Dye to color it...:). The bandanas usually run for like a dollar each OR a square, rectangle, or circular piece of white cotton cloth will work...

Basically "write" anything at all OR draw something OR make any kind of design with a wax resist stick....these can be found at most craft stores....I think they are like $3.39 for 4 on Amazon

BUT a regular old crayon will work as well...just need to melt tip of crayon with a candle...

Anyway, do the wax resist.....mix dye....dip in, let color set to your liking...wash & rinse...let dry....any residual wax can be ironed off after placing dried item between two sheets wax paper and ironing it...

Creativity would be "free reign" for each crafter....

Happy Rags.....to cherish forever!!!!

Anyone else interested in this????...:|

I think your idea's really creative but I'm a die hard paper craft person, plus this involves household chores (ironing) which I try to avoid, so I'd wait until the next project myself. There are a couple of others who have done things with cloth materials in the past that should really enjoy something like this. I bet the end result would be really cool!

Thank you Gemme!

The only "ironing" is "if" there is excess wax resist on piece after dyed, washed, rinsed, etc. It would come to us "wrinkled".... part of its beauty...

Thank you Breathless!!!

I am not very "savvy" at posting links....but will give it a shot....hoping to get others interested.....

Process can be on watercolor paper that has been "hot pressed" as opposed to "cold pressed" (that I usually use in my ATC's projects. One can use any regular watercolors & crayons....I am open to using paper if that garners more interest....

http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Crayon+Resist+Art+Technique&FORM=RESTAB

See if this helps to show ease of it using watercolor paper that is "hot pressed"...(is bought that way in a tablet of paper) in the art supply sections of crafts aisles

Hoping this will make it an easier concept to grasp....using the paper will probably be more appealing?! :)

Paper is an option...my last post offered up that option....I like the idea in the link....using the hot pressed water color paper...and regular watercolors....crayons OR wax resist sticks.

I stated in previous posts that I am in favor of open creativity to each crafter....the size of the watercolor paper would have to be kept at a limit, due to mailings, etc...

Anyway.....watercolor paper is the medium of choice......:)....yes?!

I'm not saying to limit your option but maybe to expand. If you want to do cloth, then do so, but maybe open the door for paper or whatever else may be available. I'd feel bad if you changed your medium to accommodate some of us but there's nothing saying you can't open the door to all options.

I perused both Michael's and ACMoore tonight and neither had wax sticks. I think I'm just going to get some nice crayons and make it work.

#1. And for the purposes of clarification, if someone drops out before the deadline to sign up has been closed then they are not excluded from future projects because they are still following the rules."

#2. Please add $5 for repackaging and postage. I'll send my address to you once signups are complete.

#3. Make panels, or pairs, or a series (I know so many of us are really awesome at these if one chooses to do ATC's) of any of the following: traditional 2.5x3.5 ATCs, rinchies, twinchies, inchies, minis or micros or a combination thereof.

#4. If you choose fabric, you can use a swatch, a bandanna, or whatever you wish, but keep in mind the repacking & postage to mail back out....

#5. The Un theme is a very literal....Glad Rags, Paper Bags, & Happy Tags. It's your interpretation, so be as literal or abstract as you want to be. Any materials are accepted within reason to be able to be mailed within parameters of the postage sent in with project.

From what I gather, this is a resist challenge. You're not picky about the materials used or even the material used to create the resist but you want a resist done and you want watercolors used as well. Am I understanding that correctly?

If so, glue and gesso can be used as a resist too.

It also seems like you're looking for more than one piece from everyone.

I read the size requirements as 2.5 x 3.5 or smaller.

I'm fine with any of the time frames but not everyone has a ton of craft supplies on their kitchen counter, ready to go, like I do. lol

I'm totally in but I am a bit muddy about a few details, so I'm asking for clarification.

Thanks for what sounds like a fun project, clay!

You are correct on the medium and techniques...a pretty liberal spectrum to pick from....

I am only asking for ONE piece for each crafter......one can choose to do more than one if desired but one is required.......initially smaller atc's were considered.....but since changed to 2.5x3.5 specifically....

As far as supplies, with the wide range to choose from, should be good for all budgets. I want folks to HAVE FUN....step out of the proverbial box and HAVE FUN......use crayons as a "resist" OR Vaseline on card stock as one of the links I posted showed...glue & gesso...candle wax....and watercolors are inexpensive......my aim is we have fun doing & exploring a new to us technique, to be stress free...and fun to use....

Hi Clay,

We had a group discussion around the first week of March, and clarified this rule. Here's how it should read now:

"For 2016, the rule is if one of our projects is received by the wrangler more than seven days after the due date, or one of us drops out of a project for whatever reason, that person is welcome to continue posting but is not allowed to sign up for a group project again until January 1st, 2017. No exceptions. This rule applies to participants and to wranglers. And for the purposes of clarification, if someone drops out before the deadline to sign up has been closed then they are not excluded from future projects because they are still following the rules."

I think you may need to clarify what the due date is (due date for you to receive the projects). Is it one week after the mail-by date? Under this rule, the mail-by date will vary by person, depending on their location and the method they use to ship.

For anyone participating from outside the US, if May 2nd seems too early a date for projects to be received, please give a shout out prior to the sign up closing as to what date you suggest is better, and it will be applied to everyone if the consensus is that the date is reasonable.

I have a technical question. Why the hot press watercolor paper? Does it really make a difference if I tried to do a wax resist on cold press? Just curious before I go out and buy hot press. I mean if you can wax resist cloth why does cold or hot press make a difference. Please and thank you in advance for answers.

Great question CCB!!!

One of the links I saw said "hot press"...and didn't mention cold press, which is what I have a couple tablets of. I didn't "think" to look at cold vs hot...til your question...so either will work, dependent on what sort of finish you want...

Long & short of it is this.....hot press allows for a smoother finish, and one can use mixed medium on it, so it "adheres" better.

The cold press allows for a distressed look, meaning the paper has a rougher finish, so watercolors & resist may not adhere as uniformly as hot press, giving that distressed faded out look....(I love this look anyway)...:0

So, feel free to use what you have OR choose....and Have Fun my friend!!! I am excited and getting started with my medium choices...:)

I am certain whatever you choose, will be a great piece of artwork....:)

ATC's are very popular with this group, so I am amenable to anyone doing them.......l would like the ATC's to be at least 2.5x3.5....be creative just HAVE FUN...

We will each make one item for each participant. If one chooses to do more than one, awesome. But one is the required number!

All typical rules are in play:

Please add $5 for repackaging and postage. I'll send my address to you once signups are complete. I will use the plastic bubble envelopes to mail back most likely.

Whatever medium one chooses if they use cloth or swatch....make these at least 6"x6" and can be up to 8" by 10" as cloth folds relatively flat for mailing...a bandanna comes in a generic size usually and also folds relatively easy for mailing.

Choose whatever medium you wish, but keep in mind the repacking & postage to mail back out....

The Un theme is a very literal....Resist & colors. It's your interpretation, so be as literal or abstract as you want to be. Any materials are accepted within reason to be able to be mailed within parameters of the postage sent in with project.

I have questions about the size. At one point you say at least 2.5 tob3.5 and then toward the bottom you say at least 6 by 6 and up to 8 by 10 but mention folding, so is the 8 by 10 just for fabric? Could you please clearly state minimum and maximum size requirements?

yes....:)

ATC's...MINIMUM size 2.5x3.5....

Paper can be somewhere in these same parameters as cloth, swatches...

Cloth, bandannas, etc...clearly need to be bigger...was just giving some ideas....wanted the cloth, swatches to be minimum 6"x6" and a maximum 8"x10"...just some parameters to use as guidelines......Just needs to be manageable for re-mailing! once I put multiples into the return envelopes....:)

Hope this helps CCB!

As we usually do, each crafter can designate which one of their pieces goes to which other crafter OR can leave it up to me.

Usually we put items in a Ziploc bag & label if it is specific for someone in particular.

No problem with questions.....all are welcomed!!!

So those who sign up make one item for each participant, for ten total if all sign up spots are filled is that correct?

After we sign up you PM with further instructions - where to mail and so on?

Do participants have to be professional artists?

What is the difference betwen wax resist and batik? I did search online but it's confusing. Are there many types of wax resist of which batik is just one, the crayons are another or...?

As long as the basic general overal theme of the piece is wax resist are we free to incorperate other elements?

Thank you for your time and help.

Correct, we have to make a minimum of one piece per participant. Some folks like to, and do, do more than one..is entirely a personal choice. (I do like those extra goodies myself...:)...)

You can choose to designate which crafter gets which piece OR leave it up to my discretion!

The finished projects must be received by me by 05/02/16!!!!
After we sign up you PM with further instructions - where to mail and so on?
Once sign ups are closed which is next Sunday, 04/03/16, I will send my address via PM's to each one signed up. Crafters inside the US send $5 cash in with their finished work for return pieces and $10 outside US.
Do participants have to be professional artists?
No......just have fun creating & enjoy the process.....:).
What is the difference betwen wax resist and batik? I did search online but it's confusing.
Batik is basically a form of dying a material....

Wax resist is just that...a resist. Anywhere on your chosen medium you mark with a crayon, or candle, or wax resist, will not take the dye when it is dyed OR watercolored, if usiang watercolors.
Are there many types of wax resist of which batik is just one, the crayons are another or...?
Wax resist is done using some type of a waxy substance. One crafter mentioned glue & gesso...I am not at all familiar with that.
One can use a candle. wax resist stick, beeswax, Vaseline can even be done on a paper cardstock then colored with watercolors and the image will not take the watercolor...
Crayons can be used to get the "resist" effect.
As long as the basic general overal theme of the piece is wax resist are we free to incorperate other elements?
Absolutely! Get creative, think outside the box, and enjoy the process. I have given carte blanche pretty much so far as medium used, type of resist used, and such.

The only real parameter is make a size of some significance.....2.5"x3.5" if doing an ATC or bigger if one chooses.

As far as material....I would want the swatch to be a minimum of 6"x6".....reason being is I want us to each get something of a significant size....:)....
Thank you for your time and help.
Most welcome...and welcome Fire! Hope you will come join us.

I would like to sign up, however, I need for the mailing to be taken into consideration. I can not control the exact date that something is received as even though I have paid the $33 for expedited shipping in the past which is outrageous, that little office of CUSTOMS can hold things up if they see fit. So to be set to a specific date that it is received by wrangler seems like a set up for failure. However, I do understand the problem and would suggest, for those mailing out of country that their deadline is a week earlier, as to allow the extra time for mailing.
So if this is acceptable, I'm in.. if not.. I'm out.

Could we go with a deadline to have RECEIVED instead of a deadline to go out? I think the deadline to mail out leaves too much room for problems.

For anyone participating from outside the US, if May 2nd seems too early a date for projects to be received, please give a shout out prior to the sign up closing as to what date you suggest is better, and it will be applied to everyone if the consensus is that the date is reasonable.

I'd love it for Breathless to participate. And if a week longer is needed due to her being out of the US (which is certainly reasonable), how about the due date for all of us is a week later? I think it's less complicated than having separate due dates.

Gemme

Agreed. It does seem easier to just stretch out the due date a week or so.

Sadly, I just learned that Hancock Fabrics is going out of sale. In addition to sewing stuff, they also have some craft stuff. It might be worth a visit if you live near one. Also, they sell online and they have $4.99 flat shipping, no minimum right now.

This rule must be posted at the bottom of all new projects that are being wrangled so that members can thoughtfully consider whether we wish to commit to a new project. And for the purposes of clarification, if someone drops out before the deadline to sign up has been closed then they are not excluded from future projects because they are still following the rules."

The medium can be of each crafter's own choosing......fabric, watercolor paper, cardstock paper, ATC cards...........any kind of paper that will allow for wax resist & watercolors...crayons for resist, watercolor, gesso & glue, candle wax......whatever resist you want to use.....or maybe something one of you tries/tried and found to work also....I am totally open and leave each with free reign for their choice & creativity....

Please add $5 if you are in the US and $10 International, for repackaging and postage. Please send cash as I don't want to have to deal with checks, money orders, etc!!! Thank you for your cooperation in this...:)

Please put a slip of paper in with the package with a legible & complete return address so I can get your delicious goodies back to you...:)...thank you!

When you mail the package to me, make sure I DO NOT HAVE TO SIGN for it....please & thank you!!

I'll send my address to you in a PM soon.

Thank you for all of you signing up! This will be a fun & interesting project & I am eager to see everyone's own interpretation of this one.....have an awesome week.....:)...clay.........

Ok crafter friends...help!

I'm looking for a product or technique to give a piece of water colored art, a 3D look..a China glaze, raised smooth look. I've tried, but the water colors under seem to get wet again and run. I've tried different sealing stuff...still runs. Any ideas?

Have you tried salt? It may not be as smooth as you would like but it would definitely raise the image.

Also, maybe try mixing the watercolors with a texture paste? Those will harden and stay. The nature of watercolors really prohibits them being wetted multiple times without them scooting around all over but if you mix the colors themselves with something that will form the image you're looking for, you have a better shot of getting the image you desire.

Now that the deadline is less than 2 weeks away and some of the early birds will be sending their work to clay any day now, I'd like to remind everyone to include money for shipping and repackaging.

Wranglers aren't here to foot the bill for shipping and I don't want clay to have the issue that I had last round, when two people didn't send any money at all. That was a bit frustrating for me, honestly, and I don't want clay to have to deal with that as well.

Please be considerate and make sure to get your work in on time, include an appropriate amount of money for shipping given your location ($5 domestic, $10 for international) and make sure put a piece of yourself in your work.

I keep all the projects I participate in and now that I've got a designated art and crafts room, I am enjoying those projects again and again as I display them. Oh and make sure to put your information on each piece...usually on the back or the outside of the baggie if it's in one.

Thank you Gemme!!! So appreciate your posting this. Being a new wrangler. I may overlook posting something...

I wanted to add:

Make sure to include a legible return address!

If you want a piece to go to someone specifically, please be sure it is labelled accordingly, otherwise choice is up to wrangler!!

Make sure your $$ is where I can see/find it easily...thanks!!!

Hey, all.

I'm a little slow sometimes, so some of you may already know about this arts and craft community project but I just learned of it and thinks it's fantastic and totally up some of our alleys. It calls for creative energy to be explored daily with little to no expectation, thus allowing for pure creativity without prejudice or self-editing or criticism.

It isn't a thread project and should not interfere with clay's project or any future projects but if you are interested, check out The100DayProject (http://the100dayproject.com/).

If someone doesn't put money in maybe it's because they forgot. Yes, maybe that is a little careless but we get excited about our projects sometimes and make a mistake. I think it is fine to either PM someone or mention it directly on the thread, Hey, so-and-so, you forgot to include the shipping costs. I would assume most of the time it is an honest mistake, and there's no shame in speaking up with a gentle nudge to let the person know they must have forgotten. Now it's a different story if someone is not responsive when the wrangler reached out to them. The nice thing to do is to apologize and send it right away.

Agreed. It happens to all of us at one point or another but I don't like bill collectors and I don't like feeling like one. I think everyone knows if they did or didn't send money. It may take a day or two, but they figure it out, usually in an 'aha!' or 'I forgot to turn the stove off!' moment. Usually, they'll contact the wrangler and send it out by itself like you said. That's how it's worked until this last round, anyway. I wanted to put a little emphasis on that will some new crafty blood entering the fold, so no one else has this issue going forward.

Glad Rags, Paper Bags, and happy tags....

1. Open signups 03/27/16......

2. Close signups 04/03/16......

3.Project deadline for mailing out to me...will 04/24 ample enough? That gives 21 days crafting time...or do we want to give til 04/30...that would give 27 days creating timeframe...let me know ASAP please....

4. The medium can be of each crafter's own choosing......fabric, watercolor paper (hot pressed kind), any kind of paper that will allow for wax resist & watercolors...or maybe something one of you tries/tried and found to work also....I am totally open and leave each with free reign for their choice & creativity....

5. ATC's are very popular with this group, so I am amenable to anyone doing them...with size being their own choosing...inchies, twinchies, rinchies, et al....be creative just HAVE FUN...

All typical rules are in play:

#1. "For 2016, the rule is if one of us is more than a week late or drops out of a project for whatever reason, that person is welcome to continue posting but is not allowed to sign up for a group project again until January 1st, 2017. No exceptions. This rule applies to participants and to wranglers.

Hoping I have done this correctly & not screwed up too badly... ...once I get feedback....I will post a sign up list....this is a proposal to get everyone thinking....joining in...

Feel free to ask me any questions...anyone...at all...:).

Happy designing!!!
