I was wondering if anyone would be interested in doing our own sketchbook project as an auction item for the Reunion?

We could pick a few themes and decide on a sketchbook (I would prefer to use the Moleskine watercolor sketchbook or something with a heavier stock of paper than in the Art House project) and anyone who wanted to could complete one and send it in. We could package them together in some cute way for the auction.

I think that it would be good to do them the size of a regular sheet of paper and smaller....that way there is many different options in putting it together....so if its smaller than 8 1/2 x 11 it can still be adapted(matted) on to the bigger sheet.

I like the idea of doing a “book” where we all contribute a few pages. We could have one theme for the whole book or we could have chapters and have everyone contribute a page for each chapter.

If we wanted to gear it specifically for the reunion we could have chapters on: coming out, identity, acceptance, community, sexuality, family, etc.

Or we could do it more like the sketchbook project where you pick from a theme like:

I’m sorry I forgot you
Below the surface
A day in the life
Happy thoughts
Secret codes
Lines and grids
A record year for rainfall … etc.

I think it should be more than a monthly project. Maybe it’s something we can work on in the background of our regular projects. We’ll need to make sure we set a deadline that would give Pixie plenty of time to put the book together for us.

I think that we should choose the chapters in a democratic fashion and then all of us participating should do a page or so for each chapter. If we start soon, then we can do it over time, so it won't be so daunting a task.

We have 8 months if everyone wants to do a Reunion book.

We are geographically so diverse and exciting, could be auto-bio, fact or fiction, writing, drawing, painting, crafting, photography of us, who, what, where, when.

Pixie helped BIG TIME last year with the Raffle, and some lil input best I can recall. Wrap-up thoughts 2010 : This year the event will be held in the foyer so items may be seen prior to event. Tickets purchased and dropped early so we can draw names/numbers before the Ball, rather than during, and party hearty longer. And that handsome MC :) won't have to stand calling out names and pulling tickets ad nauseum , and get heckled from that certain Lady in the audience (can see her batting her eyes) ..Ahem .

That way people can handle, look, touch and smell things. We had 4 tables of prizes last year, and I am expecting it will be bigger this year.

Number 2, yes, Regular Projects Too, because, they are just fun to do...

~I think ONE person collecting all our art ~ rather than sending the book around ~ is BEST. I seem to remember a couple of those pass-around books from the dash site getting 'lost'......um.....No. And did I read that Pixie is volunteering to take on this task!? WOW! :wine: <~~for you, darling

No Theme: Any media, craft style, art, that fits on something that can be bound and contained within an 8.5" X 11" cover. Artist's license =Geopgraphic, artistic or personal, private, or professional work from our worlds, all genre in one book. Flat or 3-D


We are geographically so diverse and exciting, could be auto-bio, fact or fiction, writing, drawing, painting, crafting, photography of us, who, what, where, when.

I think that we should choose the chapters in a democratic fashion and then all of us participating should do a page or so for each chapter. If we start soon, then we can do it over time, so it won't be so daunting a task.

We have 8 months if everyone wants to do a Reunion book.

I like the idea of doing a “book” where we all contribute a few pages. We could have one theme for the whole book or we could have chapters and have everyone contribute a page for each chapter.

If we wanted to gear it specifically for the reunion we could have chapters on: coming out, identity, acceptance, community, sexuality, family, etc.

Or we could do it more like the sketchbook project where you pick from a theme like:

I’m sorry I forgot you
Below the surface
A day in the life
Happy thoughts
Secret codes
Lines and grids
A record year for rainfall … etc.

I think it should be more than a monthly project. Maybe it’s something we can work on in the background of our regular projects. We’ll need to make sure we set a deadline that would give Pixie plenty of time to put the book together for us.

So are we just going to do the bash project or are we going to do a monthly one also?

I think we should have more time to do this, but not so long as to put it off and still be running late LOL

Do we want to start it now or do we want to do it as say a june, july, aug project?

What size do we want it to be? square rectangluar , big, med or small?

Do we each want to do a page or do we want to do the book thing and each do a "chapter" (2 or more pages)

I also liked pure's idea of having chapters that had topics similar to that of the sketchbook project. I didn't participate in the project because I didn't want to spend the money to purchase the book, pour my heart and soul into it and then send it out into the world. I'm more possessive of my work than that would allow.

So, whether we break the chapters up into letters, numbers, hieroglyphics, or sketchbook-like topics, I'm in.

I think maybe we should consider some serious topics too, like gender and identity and silencing and acceptance. Since it's for a project for our community, I think there should be a visible tie from the book to the community.

I agree that the size should be uniform and something that's easy to do (not trapezoidal), so the 8.5x11 works for me. We should also remember to leave about an inch free from clutter and most decorative items, as it will be the section where it's bound. Now, I'm okay with it being on the left or top but I think I'll get too confused if it's on the right or bottom.

1. so what we need to know is "Do you want to do a page in each chapter?"


If 10 of us sign up and each do a page in a 6 chapter book
that would be 60 pages plus front and back covers, and possibly a chapter " " page for each chapter for about 68 pages. This is a lot of pages. Plus bulk from the art work.

Pixie can you bind all that together?

3. Gemme is right there has to be an edge to bind or it has to be smaller than the page in order to mount on a correct size page

I think that's too many pages because of the bulk of the art work. It's also a lot of work (still recovering from the sketch book project). What if we wait to see how many of us sign up and then based on that number figure out how many pages the book should have (maybe 30?), and then maybe each of us could do a page for a few chapters instead of all 6. Then we could have time to focus on quality vs. quantity and not be as overwhelmed. Just a thought from Princess Laziness :jester:

Some of you did the sketch book projects what can you tell us about them?




I did the Sketchbook Project and it was fun. I had been to the mountains and fell in love with the woods again, so I got off to a to a great start in my book "Things That Change Other Things", I began with sketches in black and white of a single tree, flowing into a forest of tress, then a steel saw, a hammer, barbed wire, electric saws, etc, then a tree that was made of picket fence posts , then a fence surrounding and into a house, into a city, then back to a single tree. I colored some, painted some, left forest stark black and white. A huge storm with lightning, and electricity lighting the city and just a simple colored pencil sketch of a 2 X 4 with a bent nail.

It took months and I lingered at the end due to work and Life in general, thus, I left some pages just sketches, and turned it in on time. So, getting started early on a big project is a good idea.

I think maybe we should consider some serious topics too, like gender and identity and silencing and acceptance. Since it's for a project for our community, I think there should be a visible tie from the book to the community.

Okay... making sure I have this right. pixie correct me if i'm wrong:

We can do any size pages, though the max is 8.5 x 11. If it's smaller Pixie can put the smaller page on an 8.5 x 11 so that all pages are the same size.

We can do as few or as many pages as we want. The only thing is that we have to be able to say which chapter it goes under (P L A N E T), with each letter standing for whatever each of us want it to stand for.

Thanks for the info.....We were talking over tonight the approach we would take for this project, and we have some questions...We hope this is still open for discussion too....We mean this in a good way, and we are not trying to second guess anyone.....But, it dawned on us that say you have ten people participating with one page each times six letters (that's not including the calculations of those that chose not to do all six letters) you are looking at 60 pages to bind....And it doubles and triples incrementally when you add two or more pages per person etc....

The bind it machines do only 20 pages at one time....You wouldn't be able to fit all the chapters in one book....So, does this mean you are taking the 8.5"x11" pages and gluing them into a larger artist sketch pad that accomodates a maximum of 180 pages at least?

We sawz datz.....But my scientific brain went into calculator mode, and datz why we are asking....A mini-book of 6 pages (which is more like 12 pages front and back) done by hand is a task in itself....And this dear friend, is a ginormous book....I guess we are asking folks for their suggestions too for Pixie to consider....

Okay folks, here is the skinny....

Have you ever wanted to make your own homemade alcohol inks????....

We found a recipe on Youtube....

Here it goes.....

You will need:

1 bottle of 91% isopropyl alcohol
1 bottle of liquid Rit Fabric Dye (color of your choice)
1 bottle (travel bottle from Walgreen's???) for the liquids

Pour 1/2 cup of 91% isopropyl alcohol into travel bottle
Add 2 tsp of Rit Dye color into bottle

That's it!

The only negative I have heard so far is that it produces more tint than color...But, one crafter recommended a textile dye instead....I researching on the textile dye....I will let you folks know what I find out...

Are you tired of buying an itsy bitsy bottle of Adirondack alcohol blending solution?


We have a recipe for that too!

You will need:

1 travel bottle (Walgreen's??)
1 bottle of ethyl rubbing alcohol 70% solution
alcohol inks of your choice

then add your alcohol ink onto that widget for the alcohol ink and a drop or two of 70% ethyl rubbing alcohol....


Rub on your glossy paper and you're done....

If 10 of us sign up and each do a page in a 6 chapter book
that would be 60 pages plus front and back covers, and possibly a chapter " " page for each chapter for about 68 pages. This is a lot of pages. Plus bulk from the art work.

Pixie can you bind all that together?


2. Do we want to do the PLANET Idea?
Do we want to chose for our selves what each letter is for or do we want to decide together what each letter stands for?

3. Gemme is right there has to be an edge to bind or it has to be smaller than the page in order to mount on a correct size page

Way to go lionpaw, we are in a artistic flow.

The artistic creative juices flowing from me don't course along that river though.. My creative work can be stimulated from many things, and turn into many things. Of that, so far, I am planning on at least one page for each Chapter, to include mixed media, photography, painting, sketching, etc., and the word Planet isn't part of my endeavor.

At the Reuinion we watched as pixie created Event items, and organized 70 some items for the raffle. So, I have no doubt binding all of our work will be exciting and fun for her.

Softness, you can do one page if you want to keep it simple. Pick a letter from PLANET. For example, say you pick "L" then you can do one page of art called Leaping Lesbians or Lusty Llamas or whatever you want that begins with "L." Make sure your page is smaller or equivalent to the size of a piece of typing paper. Then mail your finished piece to Pixie and she will bind it. She will make magic happen!

Softness, you can do one page if you want to keep it simple. Pick a letter from PLANET. For example, say you pick "L" then you can do one page of art called Leaping Lesbians or Lusty Llamas or whatever you want that begins with "L." Make sure your page is smaller or equivalent to the size of a piece of typing paper. Then mail your finished piece to Pixie and she will bind it. She will make magic happen!

I opted for a little different route for this project. Actually, this project has been different from the get go. For one, I'm done. ANNNND, I did it all in one sitting. :blink:

Well, I still need to tweak a thing or two here and there and use more adhesive in spots, but for the most part, I'm done. I've also done WAAAAY more than I need to. So, Jennifer, there will be extras left over. Pick the ones that you feel suits everyone the best and then just send whatever's left over back to me, per usual.

I also have a common theme. The last time we did a PostSecrets project, I was all over the place. This one is simple. Silence. The act of silencing. The results of being silenced and losing one's voice. You'll see the flow of it, Jennifer, but I figured I'd throw this out there for those who may get my more ambiguous cards and wonder what the 'secret' is.

I live in sunshine, but can visit the snow..
This is one of my favorite local places in the world. This is the view from my front window in Idylwild CA. This is where the Family Bed and Breakfast for the Rainbow Retreat will be....soon as that Mega Million Super Lotto comes to me, or I retire. I took Sherrie up there on one of her visits. She screamed a bit going up the 23 mile winding mountain cliff roads. Once she saw the view, and the clouds, the blue sky, and the silence she knew. Once in the driveway she agreed it is my little bit of heaven, and the place my creative soul yearns to be. It's an hour and a half drive from this house, and I used to commute there Thursday nights and return Monday Am to work.

.. Even though she sees the magic there, she still hates California...She says I live in the Stepford community here in the corporate world of yuppies. Just because there is a beautiful fake man-made lake, and painted green lawns that are perfectly manicured I guess... Sherrie lives in the Garden State where the green comes from a lot of rain water, and it is absolutely beutiful. Our California water is piped in from Colorado...I have started my album pages, and the 2011 Raffle Thread is alive and online

It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in my life! I have only been there once, but it is a place I miss as if it had been my home. I think I only screamed for the first 10 or 12 miles of direct assent......then I was numb from the breathtaking views and all I could say was OOOooooo, and AAAaaaaahhhhhhh. The most amazing thing about this snow covered mountain is that they keep it in the middle of the desert.....go figure :blink:

we usually do 4x6 post card size for our base
then art it up any way you want (keeping it kinda flat for mailing purposes)
then make enough for everyone on the list
minus yourself unless you want one for you
mail them to tommy
tommy then divides everyones work up and sends you back one of everyone elses

you can make the same thing for everyone or a different one for each person

include 5 dollars for tommy for postage

there is no judging here so feel comfortable about that

the person wrangling the project usually picks the theme
in this case the theme is spring

any kind of spring/ ideas about spring/different kinds of spring

They can be anything I'm assuming? Any medium, whatever, as long as it fits in an 8x10 envelope right?
Then I mail all ten to Tommi with $5.00 each for postage, then he mails them all out?

So a few questions...
Why don't we just mail them to the other people ourselves?
Do all 10 things have to be the same?
Can you choose who gets which item you make? Can you personalize them in some way for each person?

Each person sends 5 total
Tommy will get $5 x 9 (not including tommy) =45 dollars
it will cost Tommy about 5 each to send out the nine packages

OK, just so I am clear:

we can do

1. 1 page per letter right?

That is what I want to do.

or we can just do a few pages or even just one page.


2. It has to be 8x11.5 or smaller

if it is smaller Pixie will mount them? (so she has some uniformity?)

3. Think it is awesome Pixie will post book on line!!!

4. People remember to sign (user or real) your work on the FRONT
so people know who did what!!!

Maybe we give Pixie permission to put usernames on those that forget
unless you specifically say you don't want your name on yours. Did that make sense?

Okay... making sure I have this right. pixie correct me if i'm wrong:

We can do any size pages, though the max is 8.5 x 11. If it's smaller Pixie can put the smaller page on an 8.5 x 11 so that all pages are the same size.

We can do as few or as many pages as we want. The only thing is that we have to be able to say which chapter it goes under (P L A N E T), with each letter standing for whatever each of us want it to stand for.

WELCOME Aroard. Glad you are joining in with the "Creative Types". This project is a freestyle sort of thing. Open to your imagination, and what you put together from simply words on paper, to complex crafting, photography, knitting, sewing, books, anything--> Just have fun, and feel yourself smiling as you do your stufffff and develop your "Spring". (jennifer (who has been involved in these threads since the spool) would chocolate chip cookies count if someone decorated them with "spring")

Words of wisdom/experience (e.g., don't wait too long to get started. Don't need to wait till the list closes to get a move on it. Time and life get in the way of our having relaxing fun, then the deadline is here, before ya know it and the rush is on:firetruck:)

Have fun, and don't hesitate to ask questions. Someone will post an answer.
