True, true.
Wow... went to the post ooffice this morning.. early! There were like 30 people in line before it opened! TG the majority were there for passports! Phew!!
So, everything's mailed out! Fingers crossed I didn't jack anything up! :p
Turns out I spoke too soon on my previous post ... re: not jacking anything up. Everyone should have their packages (I believe) tomorrow as they were sent PRIORITY. This is with the exception of poor Breathless. I sent hers to an old address. Sigh! :( I believe I have it that screw up remedied ... to some degree.
Having said all that... I don't have any extra bits laying around so I think I reassembled everyone else's packages correctly. If (God forbid) you get your package and something's amiss .. please PM me ASAP!

My box of sweet little packages just came.
These are all so adorable, and really feeling the "love" here!
Thank you everyone. I won't divulge anything since I am first to get mine...:)
Great job everyone.
Lyte, I got 8 goodies, so my package was good to go! Thanks for wrangling!
I just want to put this out there......I know we have agreed to send $5 for the projects for return packages, but I know from first hand experience, sometimes these cost a bit more than that $5.
This last project came at a cost of $7.45 for my box...not sure what the ones out of country will cost...but I wonder if maybe we shouldn't revisit that fee..maybe a couple more $.....just a thought....don't shoot me please...:)

I personally like a flat five. Although if I’m sending something heavy or something extra I try to enclose a little more. I figure it all kind of evens out since usually most of us main players take turns wrangling.
Please keep in mind that I've only wrangled once as you read the following. Meaning, I have a very limited frame of reference. :)
You make a good point regarding the cost of postage. The "cost" of wrangling is postage but also the cost of packaging, if new packaging is needed. And of course, the size of packaging also impacts postage. I was anticipating eight pieces measuring about 2" x 2" x 1/4 - 1/2" each. Three of the pieces were quite a bit larger than anticipated. One of those larger pieces turned out to be mine... so I'm not complaining! lol SMH
If we could agree to final products that are no larger than A x B x C ... then cost (and process) should be less (and easier) for everyone.
Also... or alternatively ... we could agree to a specific shipping container size ... and .... each participant could mail their crafts in a reusable container. If we could standardize a couple of things ... it should be a lot easier for everyone ... particularly the wrangler! The wrangler would then just need to resort the crafts in the boxes received, relabel, and ship everything back out in the same containers! Damn near turnkey! :koolaid:
Hope that makes sense... I may have been was in shipping/logistics too long! :p
PS / EDIT ... if ever I wrangle again ... I'm buying one of these below. In that past I just used a box cutter ... this thing makes it look so much easier!

Twinchies!!!!! This project surpassed any expectations I could have had. Everyone went all out. There are a few where I am unsure of the artist. But I will try to suss that out later.
As we're talking about potential issues, could everyone please remember to clearly mark your pieces so we can give credit to your amazing art!

I agree with Clay, we don't want the wrangler to have to come up with a lot of extra money, I had the exact same thought when I got my package to day and saw that Lyte had to spend $2.45 more than I gave.
Seem most people are getting them today, so I want to make a few comments on them!
Besame, I love the color you used, and 4 twinchies, you really worked hard on this one, so cute too!
CCB, I love the key and the heart on mine...done in your truly unique fashion like your jewelry...great job!
Gemme, I like all the different textures!
Breathless, so pretty... I love pink!
nycfem, adorbs! You know I'm a kitty lover! And the "family" charm,

FSF, Beautiful work and so sweetly wrapped!
Clay, Nice job...and I like what you wrote on the back...and the extra embossed butterflies...very cool...what kind of machine is it that you have to make those?

Yes mine were wrapped in white paper bags with monkey stickers on them and inside the twinchies were wrapped in a paper heart shaped doily to help somewhat protect the pieces. :)

This is a good idea. The post office raised shipping rates on January 20th. The small 'if it fits, it ships' boxes used to be $5 and change. The one I sent out to Lyte was $7.20. That's for a small box.
Times are a'changin', folks. We need to keep current mailing costs in mind and choose a cost that's in line with what we are sending. Also, if we send something outside the size parameters, then we need to include enough additional money to account for having to send more expensive packages to all of the participants. Wranglers should not have to dip into personal funds to send stuff out to us. I've had to do it multiple times when enough money wasn't sent or when people never sent any money at all. It's frustrating and why I haven't pushed to wrangle a round lately.
You know what we have to do again sometime soon? Matchboxes! OMG, those are always a big hit!

I agree with Gemme, sometimes it does get more costly if a project (s) is outside parameters. I will be sending Lyte a couple extra dollars, too!
Matchboxes...in all shapes, sizes, & colors...whoohoo....
Thanks y'all for your kind words re: my twinchie. I am glad y'all liked them. I did not set out to make anything so elaborate! I crafted my arse into a corner when I added the "flowers." I hear didn't fully do it's job and at least one of you has received a tripod moose. :(
So... apparently... there was another screw up by yours truly ... everyone should have one cute lil wrapped package with a monkey on it! I've just learned that a group member received two of them. Please let me know if your package is minus one and I will remedy the issue. Sorry and thanks!

hey Lyte....I wouldn't beat myself up so badly! Really, at one time or another, we have all had "our moments" as well...we just rectify the situation, and move on along. It will happen...again..again...again...human frailty!
Personally speaking, I LIKE my package and EVERY.SINGLE.PIECE inside them. There is "character" in each one.
NEXT....lol...:)
This may be the single best stone that knocks out the most number of birds! :)
If all agree to a fixed box size this is control the size if the crafts and the cost of shipping. It will also eliminate the need for the wrangler to figure out how to reship the finished crafts. if everyone uses the same (similar) small flat rate boxes then the resorted crafts could reship in the same box for the same cost. I particularly dig using the USPS small flat rate boxes because the boxes are free!
P.S. ... Matchboxes??

I think we should do the small sized filled matchboxes, where you fill the inside of the box full to the brim with tiny treats. Any ideas for themes?
I always have the same worry with matchboxes though with too many people joining and making it a project that's difficult to produce. But I know I'm the only one who likes caps on numbers.

I have an idea for the theme...
What if we tailored each matchbox for each person that participates?
Like we could each post a blurb about listed about 10 things we like, or are into, or collect, you would have ideas of what to put inside the matchbox.
Mine mght say:
nanners: the color purple, cats, traveling, cooking, baking, rainbows, tulips...you get the idea...
Then you could choose one or more of those to expound on for my matchbox.
Thoughts?
Oh, and I agree we should all try to do the same size, the small ones like matches come in.

That was exactly what I was going to post.
While a great idea on paper, to personalize, I know I can NOT afford to buy different things for even 5 people, or more, as we always have a big signup for this project!
So I am in agreement here with you, CCB! Good point....
Maybe do a St Patty's Day theme? Just some food for thought.

you were both right, it does sound good on paper but to buy all those things would be costly. What if we turn it around to be the things that you personally like? So in each match box it will contain only things that interest you or that you like. Then everybody will get a taste of your personality, or the things that you like.

As for requiring specific packaging, I'm not a fan. I'm not going to require a flat box when we do crafts that will easily ship in padded envelopes. That's additional expense for nothing. My vote is that we package our goodies according to their size and bulk and to take that into consideration when sending money to wranglers. Some already do that and send extra when their goodies are bigger and/or heavier than most.

Nope; you're not the only one. Matchboxes are far more time and cost intensive than the average project so the list should have a cap to manage those. The only way I'd vote for not having a cap with this project is if we wound up getting twice the time to do it.

You have a point but don't forget that not all matchboxes need to be filled with 'things'. Some simply have images or drawings inside, like your own personal mural. That would easily be doable and would absolutely be able to accommodate ideas like nan's and also be very cost effective.
I'm down for matchboxes. I'm down for a cap on the project but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me if we get more time to work on the project. I'm not down for a holiday theme but personal themes sound good to me. If no one is up for it, I'd be down for wrangling. Now, this IS that type of project that really needs those shipping boxes, so I'd recommend $8 per participant for shipping.

Yes to Gemme wrangling!
Yes to our own individual "art" for these......am sort of "over" "holiday themed" projects for a bit...:)
Yes, to $7 fee to send items
NO to "flat rate boxes, as these do get expensive to ship, and most always our projects have fit the manila envelopes...much cheaper to ship back out.
Yes, to adding few extra $ if ours is bigger, heavier, bulkier.
My adding "Do not bend, spindle, fold, or mutilate"...PRICELESS and is a "clay thang"...lol
A box or envelope is fine by me. I ditto'ed the use of the small flat rate box from USPS for a few reasons... the postage is just 'bout $7 ... and... the box is free... and... a box stands up better to being handled by our beloved USPS... and... a box can't be folded and/or shoved into a mail box.
Sending extra dough is great... but... I have a sense that the extra sent may not always extend sufficiently to cover the extra postage and the extra packaging for all of the participants. Larger, heavier or oddly shaped pieces means postage and packaging on all the packages is increased.
If we don't want to create any max/min standards at this time, that's cool! The points I mention above are clearly on my mind right now! If for no other reason, I'm glad I was wrangler on this twinchie project so no one else had to deal with my getting carried away! lol

Another huge point to using the flat envelopes is that some folks do work, so aren't home during day, and we have a set rule to "NOT send anything requiring a signature" for any parcels sent.
That said, also not everyone will have a mailbox to accommodate "boxes" and sometimes can't have things left outside their doors....so those are considerations for sure!
I have a very small "box" in a bank of mailboxes on the wall in a secure building. Luckily our mail arrives while manager is on duty, and will call us to come down & get a package that will not fit in the small boxes.
Just my "priceless" two cents worth...:)

My personal vote is for Nanners original idea. I think that if people are giving a list of 10 things and the goal is to Focus on a theme of one or more, then that really doesn’t involve buying anything special necessarily. I also think they can still be filled, it would just take some creative interpretation and spins. It’s so cool to have a piece of art that is made in light of what we specifically enjoy!

That sounds reasonable to me.
Yes, a cap...maybe 12?
We could give the artist the choice whether to fill the boxes or not, that way you could go with a theme from the person's list you are making it for.
After more thought and Gemme's suggestions, I think this is very doable without making it expensive.

I liked when we each made the matchboxes how we wanted, rather than "filling" them....to me, that isn't so much "art"....just thinking out loud here...I am a wee bit confused here...

This is great! I didn't know you could buy matchboxes just for crafting. But suppose I were to get the regular ones, with matches inside, from the grocery store. I expect I would have to remove the striker paper (and the matches). But is it better to use the ones made specifically for crafts? Or does it really matter?

If we went as high as 12 people signing up, I would want extra time to work on these. Especially since I have never done them before! But it sounds intriguing . . .

Okay... here is my weigh in on this project. I love it, I prefer to make them my way putting my own spin on, I am not concerned about how many people sign up, just that if we have more than 8 interested then perhaps add a couple extra weeks (6 weeks turn around?) As far as what to put in them, I would like that to be up to each person whether they want to or not.. I think that the are little pieces of art all on their own. I wouldn't be expecting anything.

If for no other reason, I'm glad I was wrangler on this twinchie project so no one else had to deal with my getting carried away! lol
You are right; sometimes what is sent does not cover the full costs. I've eaten it a few times over the years, but we're not in it to get rich. If we are, I'm totally doing it wrong.
A pro for the flat rate shipping boxes is that it doesn't cost anything other than crumpled paper or bubble wrap and some tape. I tend to buy padded envelopes in bulk packages so the cost is minimal for me overall. I also work in an office that gets shipping supplies in from other shipments so I can 'requisition' them for my purposes. I know not everyone is that lucky.
We've not had issues with packaging except for the occasional blip now and again. It's usually due to the artist not packaging it properly but sometimes the mail service does get a little rough. I just try to plan for the worst and hope for the best. And always get a tracking number!

I agree!
If someone lists 10 things that they enjoy/love/adore/etc, there are a plethora of ways each item/thing can be determined.
If nan says she likes purple and cats, I could hunt for a tiny purple cat, I can draw a wacky purple cat or I can cut out purple paper in the shape-ish of a cat.
If ccb says she loves glitter and vintage stuff, I could find a vintage picture online and coat it with a glitter glue or I could find a sparkly vintage sticker or I could draw something appropriate-ish.....'ish' because of my drawing capabilities...and then sprinkle it with glitter and seal it or I could find a shiny, happy, vintage-y charm and put in inside the box.
If clay says beach and sunshine and quirky trinkets, I could include a fun tiny flip flop or draw one or do a beach themed box with flip flop or beach ball cut outs.
If I say unicorns and fuzzy things, someone could take fuzzy, soft yarn and create a unicorn-ish shaped creature and glue it down.
One reason I love nan's idea so much is that it's soooo open to interpretation and doesn't demand high level crafting skills, which I don't have.
12 seems like a lot to me, personally. I'm not sure I could make 12 matchboxes doable. But I'll wait and see what others think.

We could split the difference and say a cap of 11. 11 is lucky say the Chinese!

We wouldn't have to buy anything except the boxes (and not those if you already have them!). You can paint, sculpt or mold clay or you could buy tiny fun things and bits. You could do a mixture of both.
When we did the matchboxes one time, nyc said she liked fun burgers so I got some Playdoh and created a 'burger' for her with lettuce and tomato and everything. That went inside the box. It didn't 'fill' it but was inside of it and went with the stickers I put inside.
One of the ones I did had a mermaid on the outside of the box and her dwelling, with netting and seashells, etc inside.
I also did one that was strictly paint and stickers and some yarn, I think.
Nan was suggesting we leave it up to the person to choose out of the 10 (or whatever) items and we get to choose how we interpret the use of those items and how we incorporate them into the box.
This is great! I didn't know you could buy matchboxes just for crafting. But suppose I were to get the regular ones, with matches inside, from the grocery store. I expect I would have to remove the striker paper (and the matches). But is it better to use the ones made specifically for crafts? Or does it really matter?
You can absolutely use the ones off the shelf. You could paint over the strip or incorporate it or scrape it off. Your choice. It is definitely recommended that the matches go elsewhere...unless someone says they are super into matches.
Also, size would be paramount. There are two main sizes and they make all the difference in terms of difficulty and cost. I'd suggest we go with the smaller size.
I appreciate you, clay. If everyone else wants to do this project and is okay with me wrangling, I'd be happy to do so. If someone else is ready and hasn't done it in a while, I'd be happy to participate too. It's been a while since I did a matchbox project.

I like the lucky Chinese 11 (definitely with some extra time thrown in since each one is specialized!).
I would like if we could just do matchbox size of our choice, meaning as long as they are normal matchbox size (the kind that are a little bigger or smaller). I like that because sometimes I order them and just chose the best deal. I'd prefer not to have to worry about size as long as they are matchboxes Perhaps include a little extra money if on the larger vs. smaller side?
Anyway, I'm super psyched about this project and appreciate Gemme volunteering to wrangle! I literally have that burger matchbox that she made me within arms' reach as I write this! Yes, that's how fun it was to get something that was exactly what I love!
Newbies, please do join! You will really enjoy this, and there are a lot of examples on the web. I agree with one having a choice to do stuffed or nonstuffed. Whatever floats someone's boat!

I like all this. I think as long as the matchboxes are close to the smaller standard size. There's a MUCH larger size box matches come in and I think that is what Gemme was trying to avoid.

Yes, exactly. That's what I meant. Boxes actually come in a lot of sizes if you look creatively, so I'd keep it to 3 inches long, max. The ones we did before are 2 inches and change, I believe.
I would suggest details in full by this Saturday at the latest, final sign up date 2/24/18, due date April 7th and final deadline April 14th. Now, if we get a smaller list, we can either leave those dates or move it up a week.
Does that sound reasonable or do you think another week would be helpful?

I still haven't received anything from the recent craft exchange so I'll check with the front office later today. We're supposed to get a notice in our mailbox when something is being held for us, but sometimes they're better about leaving slips than others. Hopefully they'll be there, it sounds like this time it was a really good round and I can't wait to see what everyone has sent.
Oh thank God... the address I used is correct! Same as the one from which I just got a Valentine. Phew!
I'll go through the tracking receipts.

Welcome to the 2018 MatchBox Round of Crafty Goodness!!!
Quantity: one for each person that signs up minus yourself. There is a cap of 11 participants total.
Theme: Getting to Know You. When you sign up, list 10 things that you enjoy/love/adore/like/etc. It doesn't have to be anything fancy or even tangible things, but there should be enough variety that someone can find at least one thing to base their box to you upon.
Here is an example: love, the color yellow, pigeons, old books, the smell of gasoline, fast things, graham crackers, Etta James, pens, selfies.
Instructions: Procure your matchboxes as soon as we have a final tally. Sometimes, there are shipping issues and this project will take a bit longer than usual to complete, so you'll want to get a jump on it as soon as possible.
The boxes must be no larger than 3 1/8 inches long. Anything smaller is fine. You may get them at Walmart or a grocery store if you want to use the typical matchboxes (minus the matches, of course) or you can buy them online. They come in craft paper, white or multicolored. See HERE (https://www.google.com/search?q=buying+match+boxes+craft&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiQ9YOsrK7ZAhVB3mMKHYOpBxwQsxgIKA&biw=960&bih=467&dpr=2) for options.
Parameters: Choose one or more options from each person's list of 10 things and build your box to them around your choice(s).
Note: EVERY box should be addressed to someone as each box will be personalized for each participant.
The Boxes: you can fill the box with goodies or you can paint or draw a mural inside...you can paint the boxes or cover them with paper or you can washi tape the heck out of them or cover them with grass....the goal is NOT to spend a ton of cash on trinkets or charms or whatever....the goal is to be creative and have fun. It doesn't take much money to do that. One thing you MUST do is make sure the inner box can slide in and out so that the box can be opened. You will need to keep this in mind as that will become harder and harder with each coat of paint or layer of tape. This project will require a bit of noggin doodling on your part.
Newbies to matchbox art: this will take longer than usual because you are working on a multi-dimensional project. Not only do you need to do something to the outside of the box but the inside must be decorated as well. Also, each piece will be designed for the person in mind. No cookie cutter, assembly lines this time. It's more time intensive, but I promise you; the work is worth it. These are great projects and mean so much to the recipient!
See examples HERE (https://www.google.com/search?q=matchbox+art+projects&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjs3YG1r67ZAhVD9GMKHUtSDNwQsAQIJg&biw=960&bih=467).
Dates to Remember:
Signup: 2/17/18 to 2/24/18
Deadline for finished projects to be in my grubby little hands: 4/14/18
Officially late, and on the naughty list, if not received on/by 4/21/18.
Completed projects will be mailed out on/before 4/28/18.
Postage: Send $8.00 with your projects if we have 6 or less participants and $10.00 if we have 7-11 participants. This is because all projects will be mailed out in the 'if it fits, it ships' boxes and only about 6 will fit comfortably in the small box without getting squished so I may have to go up to the larger size if we have more people.
"For 2018, the rule is if one of our projects is received by the wrangler more than seven days after the due date, or one of us drops out of a project for whatever reason, that person is welcome to continue posting but is not allowed to sign up for a group project again until six months from the latest date that the project was supposed to be due. No exceptions. This rule applies to participants and to wranglers. Wranglers must mail out projects within one week of the latest date that the projects were supposed to be due. In addition to waiting six months before being able to join a penpal project, the person who has not met the latest deadline must post directly on the penpal thread within a week of missing the latest deadline stating that they have not adhered to the deadline (reason is welcome to be included or does not have to be) and, most importantly, the date on which they will be able to return to participating in the penpal projects. They must scroll back and add themselves to the bottom of the list of any other participants who have not met the late date for any project for 2018. If that is not done, then the member is welcome to participate in the thread with "thanks" and reps and thread chat but not to participate in any future projects for 2018. The reason for this is personal responsibility, so that we have a running record right on the thread that is easy to refer back to when needed. And for the purposes of clarification, if someone drops out before the deadline to sign up has been closed then they are not excluded from future projects because they are still following the rules.
Example: Bitsy misses the late date for a project. Within a week of that late date she must scroll down and find the most recent list of people who have missed the late date in 2018 and copy that list to a new post and add herself. Bitsy's post would look something like this:
'Sorry, I had the bird flu and missed the late date of 2/21/18. I can start participating in new projects on 8/21/18. I have added myself to the list below:
1. Tony (missed the late date of 1/28/18, able to participate 7/28/18)
2. Bitsy (missed the late date of 2/21/18, able to participate 8/21/18)'
This rule must be posted in its entirety at the bottom of all new projects that are being wrangled so that members can thoughtfully consider whether we wish to commit to a new project."

Breathless, you have 11. Everyone should have the same playing field so take a look and drop one off your list, please.
On that note, I'm stealing one of your items and am making a switch with my 10. :cheesy:
Folks, when you're ready to start working, make sure to look at the final sign up list in case anyone else does the same because I'm not the only difficult one here.

I suspect as things are posted, some of us will go "oh, yeah!" and change them out. I have no problem with that BUT whatever is listed on final sign up sheet next Saturday night is FINAL and if someone has more than 10 things, I'll randomly drop one item so we all have an even playing field.
Having said that, the color thing. Let's count each color as one thing. I separated clay's out so we're good there. ccb used pink and purple, which I counted as 2 and she has ocean/mermaid, which I counted as 1 since one is in the other. So she has 10 things.
nan, can you adjust again? I count 11 now. Maybe we can do 'leaves/trees' as 1 and that would be 10?
I don't want to be a number Nazi about it but I see it going crazy and lists rivalling the national debt if the line isn't drawn in the sand somewhere.
So, we still need one less from Breathless (I couldn't find two to combine) and if you are okay with combining leaves and trees, nan...since one is found on the other so they are literally intertwined...we should be good to go.
I already have some ideas and will be perusing amazon later to get my order in. We're already over 6 participants so it looks like we're doing the larger boxes or else two smaller boxes for those that can't have a larger box in their mail receptacles. I know about nyc, but if there's anyone else that has that issue, please let me know before they get packaged up.
If anyone that is considering this project has any questions, please ask. Others could be wondering the same thing and knowledge is power. And, if art is anything, it's empowering.

Just bumping the sign up for this project! We have a few spaces left. We love our oldies and welcome reliable newbies!
Sign Up:
Have fun and if I've missed something or you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask!
I'm excited! Matchboxes are sooo much fun!!!

Argh!
I ordered some boxes plus fun stuff on Amazon and the first packages arrived today. One is great and the items are fine. The other package contained decorative matchboxes and all 6 in one package are squished/smashed/damaged and useless for my purposes. They put it in a plain padded envelope! How insane is that?!? I am so irritated because now they have an April arrival date for my replacement package.
Boo. Hiss.

If I can chime in on your post for a quick second. Amazon is getting very reckless and sloppy in their packaging and shipping! I've had to recently send back various items for just that reason, as well as books being either smudged by dirty fingers or dirty gloves! I've read stories on how Amazon expects so many packages to be shipped in a certain time frame BUT what good is that IF the merchandise has to be returned due to their carelessness......:seeingstars:
Oh... cuz just a couple of days ago I said stuff in envelopes gets smooshed... and ... viola!
Just an amusing coincidence. Or... maybe not a coincidence! *insert Twilight Zone theme song*

Ok, I have a question. The matchbox is supposed to be at most 3 and 1/8ths of an inch long. Does that include "embellishments"? Like add ons or such?

Oh. I so didn't make that connection. After a minute, I thought you were trying to make the connection between the 'padded' part and the 'insane' part.
Yes, you are correct. If something is delicate, there should be some sort of protection for the shipping process.
Ok, I have a question. The matchbox is supposed to be at most 3 and 1/8ths of an inch long. Does that include "embellishments"? Like add ons or such?
No. If the embellishments stick out a little bit more, that's fine. I wouldn't go crazy and add another inch to the total length but a little more is fine.

Postage: Send $10.00.

When making a matchbox is it ok to combine more than one theme?
"Choose one or more options from each person's list of 10 things and build your box to them around your choice(s)."
It's one or more, so we can use one item from a person's list or all 10, so it does not have to one theme. But the idea of only having to use one is so that we don't have to scramble to buy things. I like that people are listing 10 things we each like because then even if we focus more on one or a few we can use the rest of the list to inform us of their tastes. And it even helps us remember what other people like even for other projects! :)

Yay, for getting a present! :) But no matchboxes yet :(

If you have any problems with them coming, let me know, Georgia. I can mail some to you.
I'm glad to see some are already kicking into gear. I have done my best to do so but my fingers were a wee bit cold this morning. I expect to do better in a few days on my next day off.

I order decorative boxes that don't come with matches so I don't have that dilemma but if I did, maybe I'd use some of them in a project. Cut matches could make a cute fence or boardwalk.

So, just so everyone knows I've just suffered a death in the family. I *WILL* finish the matchbox project but since I am grieving it will either be my best work or worst work lol. I'm not sure why I feel the need to "warn" everyone but I do. So there you have it.
If anyone wants to send their matches to me... I'll take em!! I could use em to make ... something! :koolaid:

Gemme sent me some boxes to get me started (thank you), then I got mine and they are very shallow in depth. Like half the size of Gemme's. I was like I just cannot work like this if I want to put things inside the boxes. Which I do. Which I do. I ordered more but with Gemme's boxes and a snow day today I should be ok.
I usually use real matchboxes and I think I will stick with them in the future!

I went to Michael's today, which is always the most dreaded part of any craft project for me. I always want to take my time and linger and look at stuff, but it hurts my knees terribly to stand on that concrete floor for very long. And, the manager of my Michael's keep the store blazing hot for some reason, so I am always breaking out into a sweat, even when I'm not doing anything but browsing.
So now I have all my stuff, and if I forgot something then I'm going to have to make do with what I already have!

When I started this project, I was a little upset that the fewest match boxes I could buy at a reasonable price was 50. I thought, I will never use all of these! And they will just end up taking up room in my rather small crafting supplies container. (And I will never throw them out because, well, I never throw anything out.)
However, I have now messed up so many of them by experimenting that I don't think it will be a problem.

I have a question about stamp ink pads. I bought several from the really cheap bin at Michael's, and I tried one out. I waited AN ENTIRE DAY for it to dry before touching it - and it smeared. I think this is because I was using the cheap ink. What kind of ink do I need to buy? Or do I have to put sealant over the ink? Or is there something else I'm not doing right?
Any help will be much appreciated. :)

It's because it's not permanent. You need archival, permanent ink. It would say it on the container. The super cheap ones are almost never permanent.
You should be able to use a sealant to hold it. I would use a spray fixative as there would be less of a chance of it smearing while you are sealing it.

Welcome to the 2018 MatchBox Round of Crafty Goodness!!!
Quantity: one for each person that signs up minus yourself.
The boxes must be no larger than 3 1/8 inches long. Anything smaller is fine. You may get them at Walmart or a grocery store if you want to use the typical matchboxes (minus the matches, of course) or you can buy them online. They come in craft paper, white or multicolored.
Dates to Remember:
Deadline for finished projects to be in my grubby little hands: 4/14/18
Officially late, and on the naughty list, if not received on/by 4/21/18.
Completed projects will be mailed out on/before 4/28/18.
Postage: Send $10.00.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to have mine done in time. As usual, I procrastinated, and then ended getting a severe case of bronchitis. I lost my voice and couldn't work for almost two weeks. I came back to work last week and hoped to finish my matchboxes over the weekend, but I was so tired I didn't do any work on them at all.
As it stands I have 4 finished. I'll finish the others up over the next few weeks as I get more energy back and mail them out to you individually, if you don't mind giving me your addresses.

They are about the size of a business card and you do artwork on them.
Yes, googling it would give you a good idea of what they are.
Artist trading cards are 2 1⁄2 by 3 1⁄2 inches

So, now that all the projects are in except Pure's....who's up for ATCs?
Artist Trading Cards that is. We haven't done them for quite awhile and I've got an itch to do them!
I'll volunteer to wrangle unless someone else really wants to wrangle and do something else.
I would love to do some ATCs but can we stretch it out a little bit? This project isn't 100% over yet.
Sorry I'm not familiar with these. Should I just google or will someone be kind enough to explain them to me?

We tend to leave religion and religious icons out of it, plus that's a lot of text.

I received FOUR packages today, penpallers! I'm super excited about what I see. I'm sticking to my initial time frame, though, so you have time to get those four pieces to me if you want, pure.
I think I can get them to you by Wednesday next week. With any luck, maybe I can even finish the rest over the weekend so you'll have them all. I'll let you know by Monday.
I took a break on this last one! Feel free... if so inclined... to share your wee matchbox crafts! I'd love to see them! :koolaid:
I like ... POSTIMAGE (https://postimages.org/) ... for photo hosting... quick / easy, you can resize the photo there so you don't have to adjust/fiddle with anything on your cell or camera!

That would be great! That would still be within my time frame for packaging and mailing so that's perfect. I wish for you lots of creative and inspirational juju.

Gemme, I'll wait for you to give the go ahead on the ATC project before I post the official project, OK?
I did think of a theme, I would like it to be NATURE. That leaves a lot open to your interpretation, and that's ok. Use any medium you want as long as it fits on the ATC.
Here are the negotiable things:
Deadline dates?
limit the number of people to sign up?
Dollar amount to send to wrangler?

I did state I would wait for Gemme to give the go ahead before I went further...I absolutely agree to hold sign ups after the last project is mailed out to us...I wasn't trying to rush anyone. I was just excited about a new project idea and wanted to share it and see if there might be others on board.
Did we talk about making out of country people pay a little extra? I just don't recall that but it really is more expensive when sending a package at the end! I want everyone to participate so I hope that's ok with Breathless who participates on a regular basis. Maybe she could find out the exchange rate and send the amount that would make the $7.00 here? Just asking.
That said, I'm so excited to be able to see what you all did for matchboxes, and I'm hopeful PurePisces was feeling well enough to complete her project this weekend.

I had the same moment of dyslexia, nyc, and had to reread the post as well.
I didn't mean to be fussy or snappy, nan. I, too, am excited for another project! I do remember us having this discussion about when it's appropriate to officially start another project...yada yada yada...but can't remember how far back that was. Some time in the last quarter of the year, I want to say.
I think we determined that the mail out date of the wrangler was the final nail in the coffin to the existing project and another could be started after that. That's where I came up 'after the 28th'. We're not a dictatorship, though, and if enough folks want to move forward, I wouldn't have a problem with you rolling out the details and getting a sign up list started but I definitely would wait to close it until after the 28th.
Nature is a great theme and give us a lot of leeway and artistic freedom in interpreting it. I already have some ideas!
You all are going to go apesh*t over these match boxes. They are soooo cute!!!!
I can't stand it.

I think there was some discussion about possibly increasing the fee but I don't remember voting on it or or anyone stating yes it will be increased only that it should be increased. However my memory is really bad, also I didn't participate in last round. In any case it never hurts double check. Has the amount of time to work on projects changed or a decision been made as to whether or not there will be a cap on number of participants?

Gemme, I didn't take it that way at all...I was just reminding people I wasn't trying to rush things and will wait until the 28th to post the sign up.
I'm now asking if I understand correctly, if not please correct me.
IN GENERAL: (meaning these things could change with larger projects or more time consuming projects)
I believe we agreed for general projects that are not large, $7 would be an average and will be up to the wrangler to say, correct?
We generally give a week for sign up, and 4-5 weeks to make the project, with the deadline on a Saturday, and a week later officially late and you need to post at the bottom of the rules that you cannot participate for 6 months and when that ends, however you are still welcome to chatter with us in the thread.
Correct, or not? (Forgive me, I have a busy life and forget things sometimes...)
For what it's worth and just an FYI...
From my location (Texas), Breathless' $20.00 more than covered the cost of postage. Travel time however, was a lot longer compared to everyone else's location. Priority in country was +/- three day. Travel time to Breathless was 10 days with the next fastest option being over $30.00.
I mention this only for the sake of scheduling/planning... particularly around the holidays. Sometimes the crafts are linked to a one and want to get things to each other on/before that holiday arrives.

Yes to the $7 plus more if large or extra problematic in shipping. Your tentative outline of scheduling is correct but the deadline doesn't have to be on a Saturday. That's the way it seems to work out a lot, though.

Officially late, and on the naughty list, if not received on/by one week after official finish date (either 06/08/18 or 06/15/2018)
Completed projects will be mailed out on/before (either 06/11/2018 or 06/18/2018.
Postage: Send $7.00.
****** In addition to waiting six months before being able to join a penpal project, the person who has not met the latest deadline must post directly on the penpal thread within a week of missing the latest deadline stating that they have not adhered to the deadline (reason is welcome to be included or does not have to be) and, most importantly, the date on which they will be able to return to participating in the penpal projects. They must scroll back and add themselves to the bottom of the list of any other participants who have not met the late date for any project for 2018. If that is not done, then the member is welcome to participate in the thread with "thanks" and reps and thread chat but not to participate in any future projects for 2018. *************

I would like to say to someone who may be thinking of joining one of these craft rounds, ATCs are one of the top 2 easiest projects that we do. Post secrets are the other.
By easy, I mean that it doesn't require a ton of tools or expensive supplies or talent. They let ME do these!
You can use cardstock or even thin cardboard or junk mail. Those flyers that come are great for this. Just toss some paint or glue some paper on it and cut it to 3.5 by 2.5. Or you can make life super easy and go by a pack of basic playing cards. They are the right size and are sturdy enough to take paint or glue. You can get one pack for less than a dollar in most areas at Walmart or the Dollar Store/Dollar General.
Once you get your base, you create the image you want. All you have to do is your take on the theme of nature. ATCs are flat so they are easy to add things to and design. You don't have to add text. Or do. It's what YOU like and art is subjective so there's a ton of ways to do it.

The reason for this is personal responsibility, so that we have a running record right on the thread that is easy to refer back to when needed. And for the purposes of clarification, if someone drops out before the deadline to sign up has been closed then they are not excluded from future projects because they are still following the rules.

My matchboxes arrived and they are HAWT! :firetruck:
Clay- mad props to you for tackling burgers, not an easy one! I love the burger fabric and the burger paper. Super cool! Also, I love how you always include a handwritten note. Fun!
Nan- My little NYC Fem zipper pull (or could be used for whatever!) is mad hot! Also love my watermelon pin and the little inspiring sayings on the box. Thank you!
Purepisces- Your matchbox is done so professionally, and I love the "secret" key! Awesome vintage perfection! Will save forever! I hope you'll continue to participate as much as you can, because it is so great to have your art back!
Breathless- Your body positive theme and DOUBLE handles rocked my world! Can't thank you enough! Thanks for caring.
Georgia- That "all purple" is delicious, especially love the paint, and the stamps are rockin'! :tea:
Gemme- That glittery inside of the box was mega eye candy, so hot! I loved the teal color of the box and how no surface was left untouched. I also adored the design of the box. Do you mind posting about how you did that? I love it so much! I really love the scroll (and wire!) of inspiring sayings! I am so gonna save that and look at it whenever I need a pick me up! That means a lot to me! Also, who can argue with those steam punk gifts! I loved how packed the box was! Dammmmnnn, awesome in every way!
CCB- Rubber chicken! Popcorn! Loved the "milk"- how did you make that please? Of course, I loved the "vigour" hamburger quote! When I open something from you, I feel like I'm opening me! LOL, thank you!
Besame- I LOVE how steampunk BLINGED out my box is. That's just so insanely tantalizing that it makes me forget I have a care in the world! The steampunk goodies inside are VERY unusual and shall be so fun to enjoy! And can we talk about how cool the handle is?!
Thanks, everyone, receiving the finished package in the mail is pure magic! Thanks for awesome wrangling, Gemme!

I have to thank all of YOU for letting me wrangle this round. The most joy I get as a wrangler is seeing the packages come in, one by one. Or, in the case of this time, one by one by four. lol I love that these rounds are the ones that feel the most intimate and meaningful because they are designed 100% with the recipient in mind.
I had a great time with your box, girl! I have some face stamps and I took one that I felt suited you and stamped it initially in the brighter teal paint on Tim Holtz tissue paper. Then I stamped it again in brown and black ink.
Before that, I painted the box with a blend of paints (from the lightest blue to viridian hue). Everyone's box was painted the same sort of blend. I made up the mix every time so each one is not 100% identical as there was 4-5 blends created for painting and touch ups.
I gesso'd the tissue paper with the stamps onto the box and voila!
I'm so glad you liked it!
