MEXICO CITY (AP) - As nations from around the globe battle in the World Cup, a more unusual soccer championship has just been decided on a hard court in Mexico's capital.

For 18 years, the men of the Ignacio Trigueros Soccer League for the Blind and Visually Impaired have spent Sundays traveling long distances from their homes to central Mexico City to play the country's most popular sport.

Each six-man team is allowed one sighted player or two visually impaired players who can use their eyes on the court. All other players wear blindfolds to make sure they are evenly matched.

Without their eyes to guide them, they rely on the sound of a special ball ricocheting off the boards that surround the court or is rolling at their feet. Risking collisions and falls, the players pass, shoot, defend and occasionally even slide tackle.

When the league started, players used a soda can filled with pebbles to make noise, said Miguel Angel Canela, who plays goalkeeper for the Italia team. Then they began putting ball bearings into store-bought soccer balls.

Today, Canela, a 51-year-old industrial mechanic who lost his sight in a work-related accident at age 23, makes the special balls from scratch using a mold in his home workshop.

Jose Luis Molina, 44, a lifelong athlete who lost his sight at age 13, said positions on the pitch are fluid: "All of us like to be out front because we want to score."

Molina said his sense of orientation, as well as his ability to read his environment by sound, are well-developed after years of commuting into the capital. During the week, he sings and plays guitar as part of "Los Hunos," a respected all-blind street band that draws a crowd even on rainy days as it plays outside a central subway station.

The six-team league is a rare outlet for the blind and visually impaired community, league president Javier Mosqueda Lomeli said. "For us, this is important because we have almost no recreational spaces. Here, we play soccer, the family comes. It's a way to let off steam after working all week."

Marco Antonio Camarillo, 53, who plays for Leones Negros, knew his wife was watching from the stands during Sunday's final.

"She is afraid of me being hit, or falling, but she shares my love of football," he said. Camarillo had several collisions during the game, but came away pleased that he was able to score a goal.

Canela said he thrives on the adrenaline.

"The goalie gets the hardest time, but I like playing rough," he said. "It hurts, it hurts. But then it goes away."

Italia eked out a 6-5 victory in the final. As the match ended, Leones Negros' Camarillo was engulfed in a group hug from his rivals on the winning team.

"On the court, as in the farthest corners of the Earth, there is rivalry, there are fights, there are spats," Molina said. "But socially, it's harmonious."

I am missing a shoe and a pair of socks. I forgot to pack a change of clothes except for boxers. I had a 70 pound lab jump on my chest around 3 am. Then at 5 am the 3 dogs sounded like cockroaches with their toenails on the tile. My eyes are puffed shut because of massive amounts of salt on the drinks last night.

Nobody ended up falling into the fire pit last night. Nothing was broken and the deck has no signs of the party. I am covered in dog hair. My buddy has puffy eyes like me. We still have beer left. My hair is still ok enough that if I had to go to the store I could.

driving home from my work today I passed the new World Trade Center tower 1.
It was so awesome and majestic. I took a pic and sent it to everyone I know. I sent it to friends in NY. For 14 years I lived across from the World Trade Center. I was there for the first bombing, but thank God not the second.

I was humbled by the majestry of the building. Driving through it brought joyful (pre 9/11) and painful (post 9/11) memories.

But I did get a BIG smile because it was sooo awesome, it kind of took my breath away

When things pile up all at once, sometimes I get so overwhelmed and unable to handle it well.

Everything is the same ... my precious dog is still deceased, the irritating elderly drug addict lady next door got out of the hospital and went back to drugging ... but now I have my grip. One thing, if my druggie neighbor ever comes into my living room and goes through my stuff looking for her keys again, it is not going to be good! She just opened my door and came in. I was out back working and knew nothing about it until later. And I don't care if she is high and has no memory of it. Made me have a sensation of being violated.

I went into the grocery store to check the Redbox for a particular movie I wanted to get and there were two girls there. One was in a wheelchair but they were clearly sisters close in age and possibly fraternal twins. They were maybe 8 or so.

The Rebox there had two screens and one girl was at each screen. I got behind them and waited a moment but it seemed to me that they were just playing around, so I asked the two if I might check one of their screens really quick.

The girl at the other screen looks over at her sister and says, "You can look at her screen." Her sister looks at her like she's not surprised she said that and wheeled herself over to the other screen.

I check it and the movie's not in right now, so I clear the screen and tell the girl that I'm all done if she wants to look some more and then I get behind the other sister, who is guarding her screen like a dog with a meaty bone.

Finally the mom comes over and the first girl says that this is the movie they want. Mom says, "Did you both agree?" and the first girl emphatically says yes but the other sister says that she didn't agree in a teeny voice. The look on the first girl's face made me grin to myself.

The dynamic between the two sisters is obvious and I hope that the one in the chair keeps sticking up for herself because I can totally see other sister just running her over to get her way.

Mom made them both move to the other screen so they both could pick out a movie and I could check the second screen. As I left, I heard a lot of little 'no's and 'but I want to see it's coming from them. lol

I almost forgot the smile from Church today. :)

In our Church they ask people to come up and announce good news, or ask for traveling prayers...etc.

So my wife and i went to the front and announced that this past Thursday was our 6 year wedding anniversary, and that this year we have been together 12 years. Lots of clapping followed, but what caused my smile was one of the older women coming up to me afterwards and telling me that she and HER partner have been together 31 years, and hasn't the world changed?

This made me smile when I opened my eyes this morning:

Kevin, my very large dog, and I had somehow huddled together under the comforter during the night.

You see, I bought a 12, 000 B.T.U. a.c. window unit this past weekend. I have central air conditioning but for it to get as cold in my bedroom as I require in the summer, my power bill goes upward of $300.00. The same size B.T.U. unit I had was not doing the job anymore.

Kevin is very pleased with the unit. Me too!

The old one was as much of a bear to remove as it was to install years back. One heavy, bulky mother. And I finally had a good grip on it, taking careful but progressive steps and it started slowly sliding out of its casing. That is when I remembered that peculiar thing about it and was wishing my steel toe boots were on my feet. At one point, I had about decided to fling it forward and jump back from under it but then realized it probably only needed servicing. Make matters worse, my plaid shorts had started falling. By the time the unit landed on one Keen sneaker, my toes had managed to draw up in a protective posture and weren't injured but my shorts were on the ground. LOL! Stuff happens. ;)

Seeing a line of preschoolers walking somewhere (i have no idea of their destination) in pairs holding hands. Boys holding boys hands, girls holding girls hands and girls and boys holding hands. Not only were the pint size people worthy of a smile, the idea that they had not yet been informed about how some people are bothered by same gender hand-holding. May they remain unaware, even though they won't remain teeny tiny in stature. Cute little buggers!

Meeting with the student whos senior project I am supervising today. She is so excited and motivated... shes changed alot in the 6 years I have known her. I couldn't be more proud.

I drive past fields with horses, corn growing so fast with all this rain, and more fields of gold, that wave as the wind blows and if not they stand firm together. Just classically beautiful and thankful to see it as well as live it every day. :) At night I look to the sky and see so many stars, that the dark blue behind them becomes the noticeable palate! Right now the moon is almost full so without street lights here the darkness hits you as fast as you leave any lighted area.....except when the moon is in this stage......lights up everything as if a soft night light is glowing. Speaking of lights......all of these fields support acres and acres of lightening bugs....all flashing and looking for a mate at dusk! :) What a sweet way to live, and so dazzling!

I smile in the morning, and all through out the day thankful for Mother Earth and her glories she provides for us. I am appreciative, I never want to lose that! So smiling is a reminder for me......that life is good, and although I may not have a lot, there is lots to be seen!! :)

I'm not a fan of Greek yogurt in general but I tried Dannon's Light & Fit Greek and they've basically made a hybrid yogurt that's tolerable for those lovers and haters of Greek.

I was happily surprised with how good the Toasted Coconut Vanilla is. Yum!

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80′s arrived at the hospital to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.

The nurse took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would be able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound.

On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound. While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor’s appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife.

I inquired as to her health. He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer’s Disease. As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now.

I was surprised, and asked him, ‘And you still go every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?’ He smiled as he patted my hand and said, ‘She doesn’t know me, but I still know who she is.’ ~ Author Unknown

Being able to be with our dog when she had her ultrasound today. Also, my partner trying to calm me down. I have 50+ mosquito bites on my legs right now and woke up at 3 am SCREAMING bloody murder because in my dream my legs were itching and I woke up trying to scratch my skin off. My partner very firmly and sternly told me to stop itching, got out of bed, and put aloe vera on my bites and helped me fall back asleep.
