A lesbian couple in Natick was targeted, here is how the neighborhood responded
NATICK – Cari and Lauri Ryding always felt welcome on Strawberry Hill Road. Then they came home from vacation and discovered the rainbow flag they had hung after the Orlando massacre had been stolen and their front porch pelted with eggs.
“It really sent us reeling,” Cari said.
But what happened next reminded the couple why they loved the neighborhood in the first place. On Sunday, a squadron of children on bicycles delivered rainbow flags to house after house.
And one by one, the flags went up, transforming a swath of suburbia – more than 40 houses in all — into a brilliantly colored declaration of pride and solidarity, displayed on picket fences, garages, doorways, and decks.

Hugs and kisses from my residents and coworkers...
And not one..not two...but THREE spontaneous "I love you"s from three different residents...
Happy tears may have ensued..
And
Taking several residents outside to enjoy the perfect weather. They don't get out often enough. They were all so happy to be out in the sunshine. I (we) take for granted the freedom we have as able bodied individuals. Often. Just my opinion .

Talking to this old Irish guy this morning at the diner. He had one of those metal mercedes symbols hanging from his walker...so, of course, I had to talk to this guy, and what a doll he was...95 and sharp as a tack...still travels out of state to visit his sisters. He just had such a great sense of humour and warmth about him.
He then tells me the symbol was taken from his car...and I said, "Buddy, if I were a much older lady, you'd be in BIG trouble, my friend."
*And these are the great moments in life.

About five hours of kayaking with dopey dog. We explored new places, happened upon a very serene fishing hole, found a nice place to swim, and we scouted out a pretty cool spot for a picnic (protein shake and a peach for me, Scooby snacks for her). ferret's post - "CIJS - What the hell am I thinking, that I actually deserve to be treated with respect. It's no wonder I'm not fond of the human race."
Actually more than just causing me to smile it made me laugh - I believe we all have moments like this and the key when it's happening is to remember even though it might not seem like it at the time, in reality, these things rather than sticking around forever tend to come and go in waves. Hang on, ride the crest - sooner or later things will level off, smooth out. It's the only option because if you fight it, let it get you down best case scenario it's going to only get you no place fast and worst case scenario - wipe out. The older I get the more I realize better to just brace myself and going with the flow, ride the wave. Though it always does feel like "this crap is never going to end" when it's happening, in reality it never actually really does last forever. Sooner or later something has got to give and until then :hangloose:

We also talked about how my transtion affects her she just had a hard time recalling to call me he but apologized when she slips. I hold her your trying and in time it will get easier. Just that she is trying means the world to me.
She ended the conversation by telling me not to shave the stash and get going on the gotee

I have so much in my life to smile about...but today...my sweet little dachshund, Hope.
She is blind, but she doesn't know it. This little girl came from deplorable hoarder conditions, in May. I got her in July...she & I are very bonded. Her fave thing to do, besides being velcroed to me 24/7 is to lie back against my arm, with her body sitting upright...she leans back, secure knowing she is safe...and will put her paws together, working them as if she is swimming, & comes close to my face..she is so gentle as she pets me..I love it. I haven't ever had a dachsie do this before.
Her love is unconditional & she is just a happy little baby...her hair is almost all grown back in..horrible flea & food allergies...BUT she is with the bravest & gentlest of hearts...I love her..she brings smiles to me all day long every day....

*A few factoids on the Cubs chances down 1-3
In coin-flip terms, what are the Cubs' chances of coming back?
Assume these two teams are evenly matched and thus each has a 50 percent chance of winning a given game. That means the Cubs' "side of the coin" is going to have to come up three straight times. Simple probability tells you there's a 12.5 percent chance of that happening. There's your quick and dirty guide to the Cubs' chances of upsetting the Indians in the 2016 World Series.
How many teams have won best-of-seven postseason series after being down 3-1?
Not counting this year's Cubs, 81 teams have fallen behind 3-1 in a best-of-seven playoff series. Of those 81 teams, 12 have come back to win the series in question -- five times in World Series play. Overall, that means 14.8 percent team of teams in the Cubs' position have pulled off the comeback. At this point, you'll note that history is a bit kinder to such teams than is the coin-flip model.
What about those teams who, like the Cubs, will have to play the final two games on the road?
Good point. If the Cubs win Game 5 and extend the series, then they'll play Game 6 and if necessary Game 7 at Progressive Field in Cleveland. As it turns out, 44 teams down 3-1 have been tasked with winning the final two games away from home, and six have pulled it off. That comes to 13.6 percent of such teams. That's not as promising as those overall "down 3-1" numbers, but it's still a bit better than the coin-flip outlook.

Wild Polar Bear Pets a Dog
WARNING: Cuteness overload
https://assets-animated.rbl.ms/8735976/980x.gif
A polar bear was caught on film petting and nuzzling a sled dog in Manitoba, Canada, on Saturday.
David de Muelles was leading a bus tour for Northstar Tours and had parked near a sled dog sanctuary when he witnessed the unforgettable sight.
“This big bear had just woken up from a cat nap and stopped right by the dog,” de Muelles told ABC News. “The bear then just started gracefully petting the dog like a human.”
De Meulles, who was born and raised in the area, told CBC News he typically sees polar bears around, but he’s never seen anything like this before.

Still stiff competition and apparently the three of us were too close to call- hence the second interview. I didn't think I'd make it this far in the application process.

Actually, it was yesterday but the smiles have lasted because I stuck them in my freezer. :) I stopped by the Subway up the street from my house early yesterday morning to grab a cup of joe and say hi to a friend of mine who is the manager there. As we were talking, she was unloading the cookie case and filling it with freshly baked cookies. The next thing I knew she presented me with a bag filled with the cookies from the case. There had to be 30+ cookies in there.
Two doors down from the Subway is a small laundromat and there are usually 2 or 3 women sitting outside, either because they work there or are waiting for their clothes to finish. Anyway, I walked over and explained where I got the cookies from, so they hopefully would not think me some kind of cookie peddling perv, and offered them some of the cookies. Only one woman accepted, saying she would take them home to her kids, so I unloaded about a 1/3 of them there. The rest are in my freezer, but I will likely give some to my neighbors as well.
Take a bite out of a cookie then look at it...it's a smile! :)

This story reminds me of when my Dad took us shopping, at a local dime store. He would take each one of us in seperately, as the other two kids stayed in the car. We would walk up and down the aisles, picking out gifts and admiring the things we wished we had. So when the other went in, my Dad would nudge us to what we had picked out earlier. But, also the clincher was, keeping the secret after you made your purchases, while you sat in the car with the other. I was good at secret keeping, but no way we're my brothers!
That memory made me smile today.

tonight my grand daughter, daughter and SIL came to celebrate Christmas with us. After a feast of cherry ham, wild rice, deviled eggs, and a salad, we unwrapped presents. The wee one opened all our gifts whether they were for her or not. She just gets sheer joy out of unwrapping the presents! LOL.
Remember when I said she had gone shopping for everyone? Well, I was given a bag of pipe cleaners from her. LOL. And my husband got a set of fake mustaches! LOL!!! We loved them!
We got her a pink english saddle, for she is a little horsey girl. She is going to start lessons this summer and now has her own saddle! (she is almost 3)We also got her some dolls, and a breyer horse.
We didnt go overboard. It was a sweet simply holiday gathering but the little girl didnt want to leave "bubi and pops house"...she kept asking if she could stay longer, and even when she left, my daughter texted me and told me she was begging them to take her back to us again soon.
I love being a grand mother. I love these moments with her. I am so glad I am here and can enjoy her. I have another grand daughter coming in March, Evangaline. These two will be my reason to keep smiling...

Are you for real?
Feminist?
Are you for real?
Feminist?
Not only a feminist but a radical feminist who has watched liberal feminism, intersectional feminism, and other forms of so called feminism dilute and derail the very meaning and essence of feminism.
I prefer a Trump who is perfectly clear on his misogyny. It is much easier to deal with and fight against.
I loath the likes of Obama who talked a good game and stabbed women in the back repeatedly. If you dont know what Obama did or refused to do to help women, research it.
The war on women has been going on for 10 years now. Who was POTUS for 8 of those 10 years? Trump? Nope.
Where has the female outrage been for the last 10 years? In the last 10 years we have seen astronomical increases in domestic violence and women killed by their husbands and boyfriends. We have seen the highest rates of rape and sexual assault, the fewest cases being prosecuted, and are back to putting the victims on trial. Women are losing financially at epic proportions. Our reproductive rights have been striped bare.
Women are still complaining about not receiving equal pay for equal work. The equal pay act was passed in 1963 - 54 years ago. Never enforced but it is on the books. Are you outraged over this?
Young women today do not even know what the ERA is all about. Ask one. The most common answer is era is a laundry detergent.
Young women today THINK they have equality. That's pretty freakin sad.
Feminism is something you live 24/7 365 days a year. Not just when it is convenient. Not just when your preferred candidate loses. Not just for those aspects that speak to you as an individual.
Thus far, the candidacy and election of Trump has increased the number of women who think they are feminists or who are at least toying with real feminism. THAT is a wonderful thing. Statistics and human behavior tells us this new found feminism will be short lived but maybe, just maybe it will awaken a few cuz this country needs real 24/7 feminists who understand what they are up against in the scheme of things.

I've always imagined you had a good even a great mind but lately I cannot understand your logic or why you would rather vote for a sexual predator then a woman who just made a mistake about emails. However, you have lots of company with the bulk of low information voters who prefer Trump to a rational, more sane choice to lead this country. Luckily, sooner or later we (meaning those of us who love this country and the female sex) will prevail. You won't have long to glory in the misogyny. But thank you for revealing the inner workings of your mind! Your logic isn't clever. It's misguided. A normal rational person would not sacrifice a country, a race, womanhood, to make a point. Kobi, we are not puppets, we do not admire predation. We do not require you or Trump to think for us and try to manage what we believe.

The war against women is not something that just turned up one day. It's been something that we've been chipping at and tolling against since the dark ages and through the decades. There's been good progress made the last 8 years towards this. Where have you been?
Trump wants to drag us back there, probably by the hair on our heads. He even has Conan the Barbarian heading his old show.

We can agree to disagree on this.
You smiled because he was inaugurated?
Me? I cried.
We can agree to disagree. We have disagreed all along. Nothing new here.
As for feminism, a refresher course might be helpful.
One of the first thing Barak Obama did was sign the Leddy Ledbetter Act which gave women more time to file lawsuits against companies who engaged in unequal pay practices, lawsuits women rarely win because they just dont have the resources or clout against lawyer overloaded companies.
Instead of Ledbetter, Obama could have just had Loretta Lynch enforce the equal pay act. He choose not to do so. That is institutional misogyny in action.
Obama threatened to withhold federal educational dollars from all school systems if they did not allow transgendered students to have bathroom choices until title ix. The transgendered population compromises what....2% of the population?
Obama refused to use title ix to deal with the rape culture on college campuses. Women comprise more than 50% of the population. This is another example of institutional misogyny in action.
Hard to discuss feminism when women refuse to see, recognize or even know when misogyny is slapping them in their face.Even more detrimental when women support politicians, male or female, who have no qualms of victimizing them even more.
Actions speak louder than words.
Might want to brush up on feminism. Your examples seem to be confusing feminism with liberalism and progressive-ism. Not the same things. Feminism only focuses on the plight of women. The minute the focus is anything but women, it is no longer feminism.
But as I said before, many "feminists" are happy to put the plight of other disadvantaged groups over their own or are happy to support the causes of others when there is no reciprocity. Remember, it was Fredrick Douglass who (supposedly) fought for the end of slavery for blacks AND WOMEN alongside the likes of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B Anthony. But when push came to shove, he was more than happy to turn his back on women so black MEN could have the right to vote while all women had to wait their turn - that turn came 50 years later.
Seriously, learn something about the history of women. Appreciate those women who fought for you to be seen as a human being rather than property of your father and husband, who fought for you to have the right to divorce and the right to child custody and child support, the right to have a bank account, to enter into contracts, to buy a home on your own merits.
Try stepping out of the convenience box and the canned rhetoric and see the multitude of ways women are still slapped in the face everyday. Listen to young women who think they have equality and who perceive their troubles as a personal failure rather than a systemic problem in a system stacked against them.
There is a lot more to feminism than you seem to be aware of or willing to deal with.

Kobi, you really think that I need you to educate me?
I think that you believe by your supporting Trump, it will work as some reverse psychology and because he is so horrific; women will flock to feminism.
It does not work that way in the real world.
Nothing that you say makes an iota of sense.
You made your ?point? and the other women and I that have posted here have made ours.
This is no golden flounce but I am not engaging with you again.
Your mind is closed, you have it all figured out for yourself and I know, having worked with my clients for so many years; when to quietly accept a person's belief system.

Enough of the same nonsense that I have had to listen to for the past year and a half. Same message over and over and over again.
Same bigotry, same intolerance of those who have different opinions, same hatred, same derogatory crap. Same approach, attack, then claim victim. Tiring.
Yes, I do think you need to be educated cuz you spew feelings devoid of actual fact or history. Feelings, fears, anxiety do not make for sound judgement or rationality or a knowledge of history or a knowledge of what has and continues to push women back into the dark ages. Nor does it define feminism.
Your opinion is just your opinion as is mine. Tolerance is about accepting that others dont think the same as you. It also doesnt mean that they are delusional. Low blow coming from someone who bills themselves as a psy nurse.
Sorry it bugs you that Trump is potus now. Life doesnt always give us what we want. That's where adult coping skills come in. We learn to deal.
Your golden flounce is duly noted. So are your insults. Bye bye.
Which is it? 10 years or 54 years?
The war against women is not something that just turned up one day. It's been something that we've been chipping at and tolling against since the dark ages and through the decades. There's been good progress made the last 8 years towards this. Where have you been?
Trump wants to drag us back there, probably by the hair on our heads. He even has Conan the Barbarian heading his old show.

Naturally, I disagree with 99% of your 'opinions', however the yuuuugest thing I am compelled to say is, why the hell did you feel the need to share your love for trump* and how we on the planet are doing it wrong yesterday?
You knew that many of us here were going to need to vent, to share what will surely be a long 4 years insofar as many of the gains for our community by PBO. Many of us were hurting, many of us are unsure of what the future may bring legislatively. Rightfully so Kobi.

Thank you Ace. I so appreciate your ability to conflate sane rational argument against the onslaught of fake news, fake facts, and bullying-Woman have been victimized for literally thousands of years- we do not need wolves in sheep clothing claiming they are actually doing us a favor by voting for those who seek to roll back our rights and oppress us further. I can only imagine extreme hatred of the fairer sex to be the underlying motivation to display such disdain and disregard for those of us who care about this country and the womankind in it. They need to be honest and own their true agenda.
I am trying to understand how someone can call themselves a feminist and smile as Trump takes the office of President of the US. However, I just can't. If you are saying that women need to be beaten over the head with the Trump/Pence/Republican House and Senate club in order to realize that they are oppressed, I think that's just stupid. It's like saying I should lop off my arm because I haven't been paying proper attention to the cut on my baby finger. It's overkill and not likely to end up being helpful at all.
I agree with much of what you have said about what Obama could have/should have done when in office. I was saddened by many of the choices he made. But there is a humongous difference between sad and devastated. What Donald Trump, and more realistically, Mike Pence, not to mention a Republican Senate and House will be able to do to women will be nothing short of devastation. Considering Supreme Court appointments are for life and that Trump will likely have the opportunity to appoint a couple of Justices, should the Republicans succeed in overturning Roe vs. Wade, it will be a long hard road back.
But even if it wasn't so, even if women were not a primary target of the Republicans and this Administration, there are many other oppressed groups who are. Are you saying they don't matter? Or are you saying it's a good thing, a thing worthy of a big smile, because Trump who is perfectly clear on his racism, homophobia, and xenophobia is much easier to deal with and fight against? It doesn't make sense when you said it about Trump's anti women agenda and it doesn't make sense here. Is it also easier to fight against a blatant attack on the Climate? Outward hostility against disabled people? I just don't get your logic.
The blight of women everywhere is a major issue. Feminism is the single most important issue to me. My energy, my heart, belongs to women. However, I do consider myself a humanist and there are many issues which matter deeply to me. And I see a connection between all oppression. I imagine that considering you dissed intersectional feminism in your post, that you do not find a focus on where related systems of oppression and discrimination intersect to be important to a feminist agenda. It sounds like you think intersectional feminism is not feminism. To me, that kind of thinking leads to purism, like a feminist version of white supremacy. Feminist supremacy.
I don't understand your need to share the fact that you are smiling over Trump's inauguration with people who you know are very worried, and rightly so, about how much damage he will do over the next 4 years, and how it will affect many of them personally. You get that this is something a troll would do, right? And since I know you're not a troll, what could your reason possibly have been? What would make you do this, here at BFP of all places?
Fredrick Douglass who (supposedly) fought for the end of slavery for blacks AND WOMEN alongside the likes of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B Anthony. But when push came to shove, he was more than happy to turn his back on women so black MEN could have the right to vote while all women had to wait their turn - that turn came 50 years later.
White, otherwise unoppressed, women got the vote. Women of color waited decades.
Feminism without considering intersectionality only focuses on problems which occur for white, straight, upper/middle class, binary conforming women.
Problems unique to lower class women, lesbians, women of color, non binary persons, etc., aren't addressed or even considered without a commitment to intersectionality and the distinct issues inherent there.
In order to at least give a nod to the topic of this thread, it makes me smile to see how important I think intersectionality is to feminism.

Wrong.
All women got the right to vote under the 19th amendment passed in 1920.
Black men got the right to vote under the 15th amendment passed in 1870.

Ratified on August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granted American women the right to vote—a right known as woman suffrage. At the time the U.S. was founded, its female citizens did not share all of the same rights as men, including the right to vote.
19th Amendment - Women's History - HISTORY.com
The struggle for the vote did not end with the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. In some Southern states, African American women were unable to freely exercise their right to vote up until the 1960s.
African-American woman suffrage movement - Wikipedia
The Voting Rights Act, signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson (1908-73) on August 6, 1965, aimed to overcome legal barriers at the state and local levels that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote under the 15th Amendment (1870) to the Constitution of the United States.

Kobi,
Perhaps you believe that women need to hit rock bottom, that living under Trump will open our eyes, that this is the tonic that will start the cure and stop the political placebos dead in their tracks, and that "Whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger"
Well here's a bit I just read about that Nietzchean bumper sticker:
"...Nietzsche used a similar line in Ecce Homo (written 1888, published 1908), the last book he wrote before going completely insane. In the chapter entitled “Why I Am So Wise,” he wrote that a person who has “turned out well” could be recognized by certain attributes, such as a knack for exploiting bad accidents to his advantage. Regarding such a man, Nietzsche said: “What does not kill him makes him stronger.” (“Was ihn nicht umbringt, macht ihn stärker.”)
Today, English translations and variations of Nietzsche’s maxim are often used for ironic effect. But they are also frequently used in a positive way, to express optimism and determination in the face of adversity.
Many people might be surprised to learn that Nietzsche’s original German line was used as a motto for Hitler’s Nazi youth camps."

Problem is, "rock bottom" is littered by the bodies of the slaughtered, the defeated, those who would never rise again.

Wrong.

Black men got the right to vote under the 15th amendment passed in 1870.
Seriously folks, learn some history.
The example I used about women's suffrage was not to say women didn't get the right to vote in 1920. The point I was trying to make is that without a focus on the places where oppression intersects you have the 19th amendment, that gives women the right to vote butting up against state laws and a variety of practices that effectively disenfranchised black women in the South, (black men too) and it took the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's to effect some change, as Anya pointed out. And as Glenn pointed out Native Americans were not citizens and denied the right to vote for another 4 years. My whole point centers on the problems inherent in a feminism that is focused on the general problems which occur for all women and ignores problems unique to lower class women, lesbians, women of color, non binary persons, etc. A feminism over focused on white, straight, upper/middle class, binary conforming women is a feminism that leaves too many women behind. In other words I do not agree with your statement that intersectional feminism dilutes and derails the very meaning and essence of feminism. I believe just the opposite.

One of your pet phrases is we have a "reading comprehension problem." Everything I said in my post is true about Trump and has nothing to do with reading. There is tape of him bragging about sexual assault, it is a fact that he was in a room with teen beauty pageant contests when they were in a state of undress, he has taken steps towards getting rid of the Violence Against Women Act, he supports repealing Roe v. Wade. These are all facts.
At our rally today in Albuquerque today, one of the speakers spoke about feminism that is not intersectional and inclusive is nothing but white supremacy. I agree 100%.

Kobi, I have often loved your posts, sometimes because the ideas you present make me look at a larger picture, or a different view than I may have otherwise considered. I wanted to say something here, though, that I am not, in any way, trying to antagonize or bait. I am honestly trying to understand your actions (specifically, voting for Trump), because this is really confusing me.
Hard to discuss feminism when women refuse to see, recognize or even know when misogyny is slapping them in their face.Even more detrimental when women support politicians, male or female, who have no qualms of victimizing them even more.
Actions speak louder than words.
[COLOR="Black"]If you believe that it is truly "even more detrimental", as a woman and feminist, to support people who would only further victimize you more, then why, on G-d's little green acre, would you, as a woman and avowed feminist, support and vote for a known abuser/oppressor (Trump)?? Especially when you know he is going to make things far worse for you and your sisters. Your words don't jive with your actions. Is there some other reason, which you are not saying, as to why you voted for Trump??
Really, it would seem that your claim of being such a staunch and engaged feminist, is in direct and obvious conflict with the act of voting for and supporting someone with such an egregious history of disrespecting women and making vile comments, such as "grabbing them by the p*ssy", etc. Can you honestly see other staunch feminists voting for and/or supporting Donald Trump?? For what plausible reason could this ever happen?? In whose universe?? Are you really a feminist?? I want to understand. That's all I'm trying to get at, here.

I don't blame Melania Trump for Donald Trump's treatment of women and I don't blame Hillary Clinton for Bill Clinton's either. And I think referring to Hillary Clinton as an enabling wife is really sexist. She was candidate for President of the United States and one of the most qualified to ever run for that office. The main difference is that Bill Clinton's philandering was consensual and that he did not condone violence against women and he certainly did not brag about it.
That doesn't make it right, but it is different.

I agree with your description of Hillary Clinton, and that makes me smile because I also believe that she was the most qualified person for the job, but I do feel that she knew about his dalliances. Of course, they are HIS dalliances and the fact that he did what he did should not reflect on her but her behavior afterwards does. I think a lot of folks remembered that. They got a certificate in the mail today confirming the receipt of her hair and they sent me a copy of it. It had my name and her daughters name on there together. She's only 8 years old. It was really sweet.

Women are knitting sweaters for elephants to keep them cozy. <3
Cozy winter garments, made with love, are a bit like hugs that you can wear. And these lucky elephants clearly couldn't be happier to feel that warm embrace from people who took the time to care.

A cold snap is underway across northern India, home to the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Center, and everyone is feeling the chill.
Fortunately, the sanctuary's pachyderm residents, each of whom was rescued from a sad life of exploitation and abuse, aren't having to face the freezing temperatures unprotected.
As it turns out, a group of big-hearted local villagers have been knitting giant sweaters to keep the elephants warm.

Creating custom-knit clothing for the largest land mammals on earth is no quick and easy task — but the volunteers did it with a smile. Wildlife SOS cofounder Kartick Satyanarayan told The Dodo that it took about four weeks for them to make each one.
Still, the knitters didn't skimp on adding colorful flair to the elephants' new duds.
