Gay Pol Leads Atlanta City Council To Marriage Resolution

City Council Member Alex Wan
Atlanta's City Council approved a resolution Monday night to support marriage equality, countering Mayor Kasim Reed's previously stated opposition to extending marriage rights to same-sex couples.

The effort was led by openly gay council member Alex Wan, who told the Georgia Voice that he had been waiting for the right moment to introduce the resolution.

"Folks in the community have been asking and encouraging me to do something," Wan told the Voice. "And with Atlanta being the city it is and having such a large LGBT population, I really wanted us to be one of the leaders in the discussion on marriage equality."

The resolution has little legal impact, since the state of Georgia has a constitutional ban on marriage equality, but the move is one of many local gestures of support from mayors and city councils across the country.

Mayor Reed met with local Atlanta LGBT activists earlier this year to discuss his own stance on LGBT rights and marriage equality, shortly after President Barack Obama expressed his new support of full marriage rights for same-sex couples. Though Reed touted his support of LGBT issues, he said he could not yet support marriage.

"I have fought hard for the rights of gays and lesbians my entire political career from protecting adoption rights for gay and lesbian families, to voting against Georgia’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage as a state senator, to serving as the state house sponsor for the only hate crimes bill ever passed in the state of Georgia," he said in June.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Benedict XVI, the pope known for his hefty volumes of theology and lengthy encyclicals, is now trying brevity — spreading the faith through his own Twitter account.

The pontiff will tweet in eight languages starting Dec. 12 using his personal handle (at)Pontifex, responding live to questions about faith during his weekly general audience, the Vatican said Monday.

Within 10 hours of the Vatican’s announcement, Benedict had already garnered nearly a quarter-million followers on the English version of (at)Pontifex alone, with thousands more following him in the eight other language accounts.

He may never hit the 1 billion faithful that the Catholic Church counts around the globe, but he’s odds-on to get 1 million followers by the end of the year, British bookmakers Ladbrokes said.

The pope sent his first tweet last year from a generic Vatican account to launch the Holy See’s news information portal, and someone in his name tweeted daily during Lent, part of the Vatican’s efforts to increase the church presence in social media.

A personal Twitter account for the 85-year-old Benedict has been the subject of intense speculation ever since, and Monday’s news conference was packed, a strong indication of the interest it has generated.

Greg Burke, the Vatican’s communications adviser, said the handle (at)Pontifex was chosen because it not only means pope in Latin, but also bridge-builder, suggesting unity.

How often will the pope tweet? ‘‘As often as he wants,’’ Burke said, though he noted somewhat sarcastically that the pope, who still writes longhand, doesn’t check his (nonexistent) Blackberry obsessively during meetings ‘‘like the rest of us.’’

Let me explain:

The Dalloway (525 Broome Street) is a new hotspot co-owned by Kim Stolz, remembered as a lesbian contestant on America's Next Top Model, and Amanda Leigh Dunn from Showtime's The Real L Word.

Gift Wrapping With Ferrets

1. Clear large space on table for wrapping present.
2. Go to closet and collect bag in which present is contained, and shut door.
3. Open door and remove ferret from closet.
4. Go to cupboard and retrieve rolls of wrapping paper.
5. Go back and remove ferret from cupboard.
6. Go to drawer, and collect transparent sticky tape, ribbons, scissors, labels, etc...
7. Lay out presents and wrapping materials on table, to enable wrapping strategy to be formed.
8. Go back to drawer to get string, remove ferret that has been in the drawer since last visit and collect string.
9. Remove present from bag.
10. Remove ferret from bag.
11. Open box to check present, remove ferret from box, replace present.
12. Lay out paper to enable cutting to size.
13. Try to smooth out paper, realize ferret is underneath and remove ferret.
14. Cut the paper to size, keeping the cutting line straight.
15. Throw away first sheet as ferret chased the scissors, and tore the paper.
16. Cut second sheet of paper to size - by putting ferret in the bag the present came in.
17. Place present on paper.
18. Lift up edges of paper to seal in present. Wonder why edges don't reach. Realize ferret is between present and paper. Remove ferret.
19. Place object on paper, to hold in place while tearing transparent sticky tape.
20. Spend 20 minutes carefully trying to remove transparent sticky tape from ferret with pair of nail scissors.
21. Seal paper with sticky tape, making corners as neat as possible.
22. Look for roll of ribbon. Chase ferret down hall in order to retrieve ribbon.
23. Try to wrap present with ribbon in a two-directional turn.
24. Re-roll ribbon and remove paper, which is now torn due to ferret's enthusiastic ribbon chase.
25. Repeat steps 13-20 until you reach last sheet of paper.
26. Decide to skip steps 13-17 in order to save time and reduce risk of losing last sheet of paper. Retrieve old cardboard box that is the right size for sheet of paper.
27. Put present in box, and tie down with string.
28. Remove string, open box and remove ferret.
29. Put all packing materials in bag with present and head for locked room.
30. Once inside lockable room, lock door and start to re-lay out paper and materials.
31. Remove ferret from box, unlock door, put ferret outside door, close and relock.
32. Repeat previous step as often as is necessary (until you can hear ferret from outside door)
33. Lay out last sheet of paper. (This will be difficult in the small area of the toilet, but do your best)
34. Discover ferret has already torn paper. Unlock door go out and hunt through various cupboards, looking for sheet of last year's paper. Remember that you haven't got any left because ferret helped with this last year as well.
35. Return to lockable room, lock door, and sit on toilet and try to make torn sheet of paper look presentable.
36. Seal box, wrap with paper and repair by very carefully sealing with sticky tape. Tie up with ribbon and decorate with bows to hide worst areas.
37. Label. Sit back and admire your handiwork, congratulate yourself on completing a difficult job.
38. Unlock door, and go to kitchen to make drink and feed ferret.
39. Spend 15 minutes looking for ferret until coming to obvious conclusion.
40. Unwrap present, untie box and remove ferret.
41. Go to store and buy a gift bag.

The US has implemented a law to limit the volume of TV adverts, to play at the same level as the main programme.

The Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (Calm) Act applies to broadcasters, and cable and satellite companies.

Previously, adverts could play at a higher volume level than the programme.

The rules were taken up by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) a year ago but the industry had a one-year grace period to prepare for them.

Correspondents say the rules are meant to protect viewers from excessively loud adverts, which can seem intrusive.

The FCC suggests that enforcement of the new rules will be driven by complaints, and viewers can report suspected violations of the rules on their website.

The Calm Act applies only to TV adverts, and not radio programmes or shows on the internet.

The bill was sponsored by California congresswoman Anna Eshoo, who told the Wall Street Journal in 2010 that it was one of the most popular pieces of legislation she had introduced in her 18 years in Congress.

"If I'd saved 50 million children from some malady, people would not have the interest that they have in this," Ms Eshoo told the newspaper at the time.

Championed by Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi, it was approved unanimously in the upper chamber.

President Barack Obama signed the legislation into law on 15 December 2010.

The cat hunted in the cold, starry night. He didn't look much different from the other cats; he was gray in color with stripes the color of charcoal. As he walked down the dark alleyway, he heard crying coming from a stable. He entered the door and saw a mother trying to comfort her newborn son.

She spoke softly. "I don't know what to do. I thought you were hungry, so I fed you. I thought you were wet, so I changed your diaper. I thought you were cold, so I wrapped another blanket around you." She rocked the infant a few minutes longer and then laid him back in a manger filled with hay. The baby continued to cry.

The cat knew what needed to be done. He leapt into the manger and curled up next to the child. In comforting tones, he began to purr. It was the sweetest lull-a-bye ever heard. The baby quieted and drifted off to sleep.

The woman gently stroked his fur. "Thank you. I don't know where you came from, but thank you." The woman planted a gentle kiss upon the cat's forehead.

God was looking down and witnessing the blessed events of His son's birthday. Heard only by the cat, God spoke.

"You have done a wonderful deed this night. Because you cared enough to help this woman, I will mark you and your offspring forever so that people will know what you have done. Her name is Mary and from this day forward you will have the letter "M" on your forehead."

RAINBOWS! These are my fave. I used to get them from a bakery on 9th Street in the Park Slope area of Brooklyn back when I lived in Bay Ridge. Yeah, there were bakeries in Bay Ridge but I loved the many bakeries on 9th street the best.

1. The McRib is a product of "restructured meat technology."

Rene Arend came up with the idea and design of the McRib, but it's a professor from the University of Nebraska named Richard Mandigo who developed the "restructured meat product" that the McRib is actually made of.

According to an article from Chicago magazine, which cites a 1995 article by Mandigo, "restructured meat product" contains a mixture of tripe, heart, and scalded stomach, which is then mixed with salt and water to extract proteins from the muscle. The proteins bind all the pork trimmings together so that it can be re-molded into any specific shape — in this case, a fake slab of ribs.

2. The entire McRib sandwich contains about 70 ingredients — including a flour-bleaching agent used in yoga mats.

The McRib sandwich consists of just five basic components: a pork patty, barbecue sauce, pickle slices, onions, and a sesame bun.

But, as recently reported by Time magazine, a closer inspection of McDonald's own ingredient list reveals that the pork sandwich contains a total of 70 ingredients. This includes azodicarbonamide, a flour-bleaching agent often used in the production of foamed plastics.

The entire sandwich packs a whopping 500 calories, 26 grams of fat, 44 grams of carbs, and 980 milligrams of sodium.
