Chicago will be pounded with 18 foot waves from Lake Michigan today.
*This storm has me here in Chicago for a couple of days. Ice is magically beautiful, but if it actually is 3 to 5 inches as forecasted, this beauty will not only be breathtaking, but quite deadly.
Here are a few photos of the last ice storm.

The Year's Best Under-the-Radar Podcasts
(Links to the PodCasts can be found here (http://www.motherjones.com/media/2015/12/best-podcasts-2015) on the Mother Jones web page featuring this article.)
Ah, the holidays—more time to binge on your favorite TV shows and catch the midnight showing of the new Star Wars flick. Or maybe instead you'll want to close your eyes and sink into the latest media craze: podcasts. Pull out your phone right now and you'd find hundreds of thousands of shows to choose from. Nearly a third of the podcasts currently listed on iTunes launched after June 2014, the month that marked the release of Serial, the hugely popular murder mystery series hosted by Sarah Koenig. While it quickly shot to fame and attracted more listeners than any podcast in history, Serial isn't the only smart, timely audio show out there. Here are some of our favorite lesser-known podcast gems of 2015:
Whistlestop. Hosted by political wonk John Dickerson—the all-star moderator of the second Democratic debate—Whistlestop is an antidote to the head-splitting news coverage of the desperate race for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. Dickerson, a veteran political correspondent for Slate and the new host of CBS' Face the Nation, takes his listeners deep into campaign history, from JFK's struggle to convince voters to look past his religious identity to the worst answer to the question "Why do you want to be president?" in history. Whether it's the historical precedent for Donald Trump or the rise of talk shows mirroring today's rise of social media, the electoral politics of yesteryear put today's presidential race in context.
Reply All. One of several shows recently launched by industry newcomer Gimlet Media, Reply All explores the culture of the internet through stories of human greed, mischievousness, vulnerability, regret, kindness, and wonder. Why are there so many fake historical photo accounts on Twitter? What's it like to navigate online dating as an Asian woman? How do you delete a sent email? Hosts PJ Vogt and Alex Goldman, both former staffers at WNYC's On the Media, play resident ecologists of the internet, pointing out the treasures and travails of the age of technology. This show isn't just for Reddit dwellers or the Twitter-obsessed, but for anyone who's grown accustomed to living in the digital age.
#GoodMuslimBadMuslim. Comedian Zahra Noorbakhsh and writer and activist Tanzila "Taz" Ahmed used to tease each other about which one was the "bad Muslim." Noorbakhsh drinks, eats pork, has sex, and prays. Ahmed shuns alcohol and pork but rarely prays. Walking a fine line between "good" and "bad"—both in Muslim communities and in post-9/11 America—Noorbakhsh and Ahmed host laughter-filled, unvarnished conversations about politics, pop culture, and Islamophobia. With anti-Muslim sentiment prominently on display in the wake of the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California, Noorbakhsh and Ahmed's candid conversations are a much-needed breath of fresh air.
99% Invisible. Still going strong after five years, this curious podcast zooms in on the unassuming objects in our lives that we rarely give a second thought. Radio host Roman Mars reveals the hidden stories behind neon lights, a 90-year-old building in New York, silly putty, the couch where Sigmund Freud saw his patients, and barbed wire (a.k.a. "the Devil's rope"). Mars has such a loyal following that he holds office hours at a local cafe where his admirers can ask him about his work. At one of those gatherings, he told a young journalist that he chooses the stories based on what he'd want to tell people at parties. So if you're searching for conversation fodder for your family reunion, look no further.
The Mystery Show. Self-styled detective and radio host Starlee Kine investigates the little ordinary mysteries that bug us—the origins of a childhood treasure, a confounding lunchbox illustration, or the exact height of actor Jake Gyllenhaal. In the short time it has been on the air, this Gimlet Media creation has made its way into the Top 20 most popular podcasts on iTunes. As Kine says in one episode, "If you have a mystery," (no matter how small), "you carry it with you always." That is, until Kine shows up to break the case wide open.
Another Round. Another pair of sharp and charismatic ladies talk about race, culture, politics, feminism, identity, and life in this weekly show. Fueled by booze and bad jokes, hosts Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton—two black women writers for Buzzfeed—interview everyone from comedians and mental health professionals to cultural and political heavyweights like Melissa Harris-Perry, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Hillary Clinton. Nigatu and Clayton are always entertaining, and they offer a break from the usual string of white, male voices. The A.V. Club writes that they "have very quickly established themselves as funny and insightful hosts, bringing their infectious personalities to conversations that range from squirrels to self-care to microaggressions in the workplace."
Gravy. Yankee radio journalist Tina Antolini presents portraits of the changing American South through the lens of food. In one recent episode, Antolini zeros in on the cuisine at the Kentucky Derby—not the food served to the spectators, but the food eaten on the go by the stable workers, most of whom are from Central America. One week, Antolini talks to a struggling Louisiana fisherman. Another week, she reflects on fried chicken, at once an iconic comfort food and an ingredient for a hateful racial stereotype. Antolini navigates questions of changing demographics and economic power through heartfelt tales of home-cooked meals. Warning: Do not tune in on an empty stomach.
Guys We Fucked. Originally banned by iTunes for its racy title and now listed as one of its top five comedy podcasts, each episode of Guys We Fucked showcases a running, profanity-laced conversation between two female comedians and their guests, who have included Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead, sex columnist Dan Savage, and adult film star and writer Stoya. Dubbed "The Anti-Slut Shaming Podcast," Guys We Fucked is on a mission to reclaim female sexuality. Even though it's a comedy show, it has ventured into taboo subjects like pedophilia, sex work, and sexual violence. Creators Corinne Fisher and Krystyna Hutchinson describe their target audience as people who are "ready to stop living a suffocated, shame-filled bedroom life."
The Specialist. The brainchild of KALW public radio in San Francisco, The Specialist offers brief glimpses into jobs we don't think about and the lives of those who do them. In one particularly fascinating episode, host Casey Miner interviews the women of Comb it Out, a California hair salon dedicated to removing lice from the scalps of their unlucky hosts. In another, she interviews a woman in charge of preparing food for zoo animals. The episodes are short but engrossing, offering windows into the most obscure sectors of our economy.
Death, Sex, and Money. Pop quiz: What are the three things you're not supposed to talk about at the dinner table this holiday season? Hint: You'll find them in the title of WNYC's second most popular podcast (after Radiolab). Through intimate interviews with celebrities and everyday people, host Anna Sale, whom Vulture has called the most likely successor to Fresh Air's Terry Gross, delves into subjects like why people don't have sex and how you get elected coroner.
The Thomas Jefferson Hour. Humanities scholar Clay Jenkinson is a Jefferson expert and has been impersonating the nation's third president for more than 30 years. Producing The Thomas Jefferson Hour from inside a converted farmhouse in North Dakota, Jenkinson answers listeners' questions in the voice of Thomas Jefferson, based on the former president's writings and actions in life. When Mother Jones asked what would most disturb Jefferson about our society today, Jenkinson replied in character, saying he was terrified by "your national debt, your capacity for violence, including war, but also domestic violence." Jenkinson's TJ is more than just an entertaining impersonation. It's a vehicle for discussing political theory and the values that shaped our nation—both for the better and for the worse.
Startup. This show documents the origin story of Gimlet Media, founded by Alex Blumberg, former host of NPR's Planet Money. Blumberg left the public radio world—one of many defectors joining the podcast movement—with the goal of starting his own media company, which he hoped would become the "HBO of podcasting." As he embarked on this new adventure, Blumberg turned the microphone on himself, his wife, and his co-workers. The result is a trying story of the emotional up and downs of starting one's own business.

Scientists Trying To Genetically Resurrect Extinct Galapagos Tortoise
An extinct species of Galapagos tortoise, whose last living example died in 2012 at age 100, may be resurrected with the genetic help of some close relatives, scientists say.
When the iconic tortoise dubbed Lonesome George — so-named because, as the last survivor of his species, he was alone — died on Pinta Island in the Galapagos, it meant extinction for the Pinta Island saddleback tortoise.
Found on Pinta in 1971 as the single living tortoise on the entire island, George was moved to Santa Cruz Island for protection.
Although he lived there for a further 41 years, all attempts to mate him to keep his species line alive failed.

Keeping my toesies crossed this will be a success. Losing species is unacceptable.

Just another beautiful day in Iceland. :)
http://eyegami.co/wp-content/uploads/Eyjafjallajokull-Lightning-Volcano-Iceland.jpg
http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01619/lightning-close_1619201i.jpg
Lightning is generally caused by the separation of positively and negatively charged particles in the atmosphere. Once the charge separation becomes large enough to overcome the insulating properties of air, electricity will flow in between the positively and negatively charged particles as bolts of lightning and neutralize the charge.
Thousands of lightning flashes have been observed over large volcanic eruptions. Scientists think that the charged particles responsible for volcanic lightning may originate from both the material ejected from the volcano and through charge formation processes within ash clouds moving through the atmosphere. However, only a few scientific studies have been conducted on volcanic lightning to date. Hence, the exact cause of volcanic lightning is still being actively debated.
Bottom line: Intense and spectacular lightning storms can be produced during large volcanic eruptions. Scientists think that the charged particles responsible for volcanic lightning may originate from both the material ejected from the volcano and through charge formation processes within ash clouds moving through the atmosphere.
Iceland is one of the most progressive countries on the planet, definitely a place where I would consider living. Volcanoes can make air travel problematic, many flights are scuppered due to this most stunning phenomena.

3 Legged Kitty Adopted By 2 Year Old Amputee.
A three-legged kitten was adopted by a family with a 2-year-old girl, Scarlette, who is also an amputee herself. When they first met, they connected as if they understood each other.
Scarlette is a very brave little girl who has beat a rare form of cancer though her left arm was left amputated. She absolutely adores cats.
“We wanted a little kitten to have her grow up with, so she has something that’s just like her,” Simone Tipton told Love Meow.

4 New Elements Are Added To The Periodic Table
http://cdn.geekwire.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/160104-element-630x447.jpg
For now, they're known by working names, like ununseptium and ununtrium — two of the four new chemical elements whose discovery has been officially verified. The elements with atomic numbers 113, 115, 117 and 118 will get permanent names soon, according to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.
With the discoveries now confirmed, "The 7th period of the periodic table of elements is complete," according to the IUPAC. The additions come nearly five years after elements 114 (flerovium, or Fl) and element 116 (livermorium or Lv) were added to the table.
With the additions, the bottom of the periodic table now looks like a bit like a completed crossword puzzle — and that led us to get in touch with Karol to ask about the next row, the eighth period.

I'll be danged, Ace was tickled pink when this element was discovered last year.

Half Of The World's Population Lives On 1% Of Her Land
In the simple map above lies a stark spatial imbalance: half the people in the world cram into just 1 percent of the Earth’s surface (in yellow), and the other half sprawl across the remaining 99 percent (in black).
Data viz extraordinaire Max Galka created this map using NASA’s gridded population data, which counts the global population within each nine-square-mile patch of Earth, instead of within each each district, state, or country border. Out of the 28 million total cells, the ones with a population over 8,000 are colored in yellow. That means each yellow cell has a population density of about 900 people per square mile—“roughly the same population density as the state of Massachusetts,” Galka writes in the accompanying blog post. The black regions, meanwhile, reflect sparser population clusters.
https://cdn.theatlantic.com/assets/media/img/posts/2016/01/world_population_in_half/9d0100ac6.png
Take this close-up of South and East Asia. The region in this image alone contains about 46 percent of the world’s population, which isn’t all that surprising considering India and China are the two most populous countries in the world.
https://cdn.theatlantic.com/assets/media/img/posts/2016/01/indiachina/462f1c6aa.png
Asia’s densest spots are mostly concentrated in the inland urban areas. Europe, on the other hand, is nowhere as dense as Asia but has its population hotspots sprinkled more uniformly across its area:

We all got up to some drunken antics we'd rather forget over New Year's Eve. But one image of the chaos, captured by photographer Joel Goodman, is taking the internet by storm. It has so far garnered more than 27,000 retweets and people are so overcome by the photograph that some have gone as far as comparing the scene to the work of renaissance artists.
Roland Hughes, a senior producer for the BBC, was the first to take to Twitter and share photo that was taken during celebrations in Manchester, England.

How Victorians Flirted: Risque Cards And Negging
Victorians loved to communicate via calling card. It was the proper, dignified way to communicate with other people. But wouldn’t you know, young people just had to mess it up. Check out these oh so risque Victorian flirtation cards.
Calling cards came into widespread use in the mid-1800s, when the middle class was trying to acquire a bit of an upper class finish, and when it became feasible for everyone to print up and carry around personalized bits of paper. They lingered for longer than you expect. One woman mentions in a memoir that her grandmother carried calling cards into the 1940s. The cards could be an elaborate communication device. Folding down different corners of the card let the receiver know when the giver would be in for a visit, or when they would be away. There were mourning cards, cards for different celebrations, and of course dance cards. All of them were a kind of social gauntlet—a formal way of getting acquainted and keeping in touch.

We really need to be thinking more about the oppression, abuse and exploitation of women as a global problem. We Americans, seem to have this 'it's not my problem" attitude but it definitely is our problem, Women are a collective class no matter how many miles separate them. It doesn't matter if some woman wears a burka. The day she has acid splashed in her face, she may as well have been you or me. The ruling class has nearly succeeded in alienating women from each other but we can't let them. They want us to believe that women have no class interests, and yet they certainly use their status and wealth to operate as a class. As Americans and women of industrialized nations, we should be fighting for all women like we would for a sister, a friend, or ourselves.

I am beside myself right now. He was too young to die. I've been a David Bowie fan since forever. His music was the soundtrack of my life for many years. Labyrinth was brilliant, of course. His energy spoke to me in ways I can hardly explain. As a teenager, my plan was to become his housekeeper or platonic wife. I was serious! Bowie was the coolest rock and roll artist of his era. I really believe that. He was an original and a genius! RIP! :( https://consequenceofsound.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/screen-shot-2016-01-11-at-12-55-30-am.png?w=807

NASA's New VASIMR Plasma Engine Could Take Us To Mars in 39 Days
NASA recently provided $10 million in funding to Ad Astra Rocket Company of Texas for further development of its Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket (VASIMR), an electromagnetic thruster capable of propelling a spaceship to Mars in just 39 days. NASA’s funding was part of the “12 Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnership.” Ad Astra’s rocket will travel ten times faster than today’s chemical rockets while using one-tenth the amount of fuel.
The VASIMR system would cut the trip to Mars by months according to Franklin Chang Diaz, a former MIT student, NASA astronaut, and now CEO of Ad Astra.
According to Diaz, “this is like no other rocket that you may have seen in the past. It is a plasma rocket. The VASIMR Rocket is not used for launching things; it is used for things already in orbit. This is called “in-space propulsion.”

Scientists have produced superheated gas exceeding temperatures of 2 billion degrees Kelvin, or 3.6 billion degrees Fahrenheit.
This is hotter than the interior of our Sun, which is about 15 million degrees Kelvin, and also hotter than any previous temperature ever achieved on Earth, they say.
They don't know how they did it.

Millions Mourn As Rocker/Activist Ted Nugent Is Found....Alive.
The news broke early and sent shock waves through the rock and roll community, and throughout the Republican Party, where Nugent is well-known for his support for conservative causes, and fierce advocacy for the rights of hunters and gun owners.

Ever since I happened upon a Mardi Gras Indian procession a few years ago while visiting New Orleans, I've been fascinated by their culture. Their suits are quite extravagant works of art. They cost thousands of dollars to make, can often weigh over 100 pounds, and usually take several months to finish.

I thought this article was interesting. I never knew this was a thing among queer women...
Maybe it was because he seemed like a 'safe' version of a guy at a time when I wanted to like boys but didn't. I sometimes found boys 'cute, but the of having sex with them was repulsive to me. David Bowie had a different energy. He seemed almost in between genders.

First Flower Grown in Space!
US astronaut Scott Kelly announced the historic news from the International Space Station
http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/1482268/first-space-flower.jpg?w=736
A flower has bloomed in the zero gravity of space for the first time ever.
US astronaut Scott Kelly announced the historic news that a zinnia plant had flowered on the International Space Station (ISS) on his Twitter account, along with a photograph of an orange, 13-petalled flower.
“First ever flower grown in space makes its debut! #SpaceFlower #zinnia #YearInSpace,” he wrote, adding: “Yes, there are other life forms in space!”
A Nasa blog about the flowers, written before one had bloomed, said zinnias were chosen not for their beauty but to “help scientists understand how plants flower and grow in microgravity”.

Traveling through the upper midwest these last couple of days and man oh man, it is bitter bitter !@#% cold! It was -08 the other day in Minnesota. (THAT was the high) Read in the news that a young woman returning from a night of partying was found frozen on a sidewalk, only a couple of blocks from her house in Madison Wi.
It can not be emphasized enough to bring your fur friends inside, do not drink alcohol to excess, dress in layers and make lots of love in front of a fireplace on a (fake) bear rug. If one is in the financial position to purchase bird, squirrel, or deer food, please do. Many areas in this neck of the woods have 3-4 inches of ice on the ground for several weeks, our animal friends noticeably are having difficulty getting to their food.
Check on your elderly neighbors, hydrate, keep your vehicle's gas tank full.
If I sound like your dad or mom, well....so be it.

A spellbinding winter blues–busting indoor rainbow has appeared on the first floor of the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery in Washington. And while to the naked eye it might look like a grace note after a rainstorm or a multicolored beam of sunlight, this dazzling man-made sleight of hand is actually composed of 60 miles of embroidery thread strung up by hand according to a carefully plotted matrix to create the trompe l’oeil effect.*

Part of the “Wonder” exhibition currently running until July 10, Gabriel Dawe’s “Plexus A1” was created especially for the Renwick Gallery, but it’s part of a numbered series called “Plexus,” variations of which are currently on view in Utah, Arkansas, and Denmark.

Fairytales much older than previously thought.
Fairy stories such as Beauty and the Beast and Rumpelstiltskin can be traced back thousands of years to prehistoric times, with one tale originating from the bronze age, academics have revealed.
Using techniques normally employed by biologists, they studied common links between 275 Indo-European fairy tales from around the world and found some have roots that are far older than previously known, and “long before the emergence of the literary record”.
While stories such as Beauty and the Beast and Rumplestiltskin were first written down in the 17th and 18th century, the researchers found they originated “significantly earlier”. “Both tales can be securely traced back to the emergence of the major western Indo-European subfamilies as distinct lineages between 2,500 and 6,000 years ago,” they write...

How it feels to be a poor mother without heat during a blizzard.
At the end of a row of abandoned homes in one of Washington’s poorest neighborhoods, it’s 7:30 a.m., and Chamika McLaughlin climbs out of bed. She dreads this time of day. It’s when she has to make a choice between two terrible options.
Does she stay cold? Or does she put her life at risk?
McLaughlin pulls on a blue hat, wraps a black sweater around her slight frame and pads into the kitchen. Hands tucked in her armpits, she shivers in the early-morning chill. School is canceled today, and her 12-year-old son, sleeping in one of the apartment’s two bedrooms, will soon awake. She has to get the house warmer. So, as she’s done countless times over two heatless winters in this apartment, she reaches for the oven dial.
McLaughlin, 30, knows heating her home this way could start a fire — oven blazes kill people every year. But she feels she didn’t have a choice. She’s marooned with defective radiators in one of the worst blizzards to hit the District in years. McLaughlin turns the oven to 400 degrees, pulls down its door and watches the coils inside glow red.

*A few years ago, while watching the teevee, a commercial from the local cable company advertising for the "Big Game," so effed up we can be sued for saying the Super Bowl, but I digress. SuperBowlSuperBowlSuperBowl! Hah!
Okay, back to the story. The commercial scene was 3 men inside with a charcoal grill, they were all bundled up being pretendbians and bad ass. But really? I called the cable company to have them reconsider this commercial and how I believed them to be irresponsible. Yes, some folks may think it is quite fine to start a charcoal grill indoors. What I heard back......*crickets.

Dog escapes yard to join a marathon, finishes 7th.
What started as a typical tough half-marathon ended as anything but when a bloodhound joined the race and snagged a seventh-place finish.
According to Runner's World, Ludivine the hound slipped away from her backyard the morning of Jan. 16 and found her way to the starting line of the Trackless Train Trek Half Marathon in the sleepy town of Elkmont, Alabama.

Romans cover their nudes for Iranian leader's visit.
The Romans have censored themselves to make visiting Iranian President Hassan Rouhani feel more comfortable during his historic stop in Italy.
Rouhani -- the first Iranian leader to visit Europe in almost 20 years -- met Tuesday with Pope Francis at the Vatican, but another stop on his agenda was the famed Capitoline Museum, where classic Italian nude sculptures were covered with plain white boards to avoid offending the Muslim president.
Italian news agency ANSA said the nudes were covered out of respect for Rouhani.
Nonetheless, the move wasn't going over well with many Italians on social media, some of whom lambasted it as "absurd," and "embarrassing, servile behaviour."
