Just an interesting piece of folklore I happened upon this morning while having some coffee. I enjoy reading these sorts of legends; particularly as they intersect with history and geography.


Sacred mysteries of Russian Shambhala

There are numerous lakes and ponds in Russia and CIS countries associated with sacred and pagan traditions. Some have to do with Christian shrines, while others have been revered since ancient times by local people as sacred and were used for worship and various ceremonies.

The most common are legends of the sunken churches coming up in various places. They say that there is a church at the bottom of Svetloyar Lake located in mysterious town of Kitezh in Novgorod region. The legend of its origin says that once a pagan goddess Turk rode here on her spirited horse and flogged people for their sins. She then sank into the ground with the horse, and at this place appeared a lake, and Kitezh-grad grew on its shores.

They say that later, during the invasion of Batu Khan to Russia, a local prisoner, unable to bear the torture, undertook to show the Tatar-Mongols secret approaches to Kitezh town. But the residents were praying, and the town sank to the bottom of the lake, along with all the houses and churches. Another version of the legend states that Kitezh went under water in an era of secessionism.

Either way, local residents and tourists who visited here argue that sometimes one can hear the sound of church bells from the depths of the lake, and sometimes one can even see a reflection of an ornate church in the water. The water from Svetloyar allegedly cures diseases.

Researchers have sought to find the underwater town of Kitezh they call "Russian Shambhala", but to no avail. It seems that this town can be seen only by select few.

Similar stories are told about other Russian waters. For example, there is Lake Svyatovskoe in the Tambov region that likely is of meteoritic origin. They say that it is bottomless (ropes with a load never get to the bottom), and that many fishermen found their death there. Once a church sank in the lake, and now one can sometimes hear the bells from under the water.

Legends of a church sank in the water are told about Svetloye Lake near Zhukovka (Bryansk Region). From the bottom of the lake at times one can see strange light beams.

There is Grebenitskoe Lake in Vitebsk region of Belarus. On May 28, 2004 a group of young people from the village of Liozno had a party at the lake and was taking pictures. Nothing unusual was noticed, but when later the film was developed, it appeared that in some frames one could clearly see the outlines of an unknown church with something similar to an icon on the background.

There are no churches near the lake. The pictures were given to a history teacher from a local school who went to Minsk to get them to the researchers. But scientists could not explain the phenomenon. Priests told her that it was "a miracle of God."

After learning about the miracle, journalists flocked to the lake. However, nearly all of them had problems with their equipment at the lake. Such cases are common when trying to research abnormal phenomena and can be explained by the presence of a strong electromagnetic radiation.

What does this miraculous temple symbolize? In this area there is a legend about a church that in the distant past fell through the ground. It was located seven kilometers north of the lake. They say that the church fell through right at the time of service, along with all the praying. Sometime later it began to rise from the ground. One day a shepherd boy stepped on the spire sticking out and hurt his foot. Peasants tried digging the area, but just as the saw the dome, the church once again went underground and took the diggers along.

However, it is unclear why the mirage was observed on the lake. It is not ruled out that these mirages can "broadcast" from a distance.

On the shore of Lake Saint (Arkhangelsk region) there are wooden Orthodox crosses where people tie pieces of cloth. It is believed that if one ties a piece of cloth to a cross and makes a wish, it will come true. This is a cross between Christianity and paganism, which is characteristic for the Russian people.

In the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area there is a lake allegedly inhabited by a gigantic sacred serpent yalpyn-ui worshiped by the locals - Mansi. On sunny days, the snake's skin glistens in the sun. Every June, Mansi conduct their pagan rituals on the lake. The tradition has been preserved to this day.

Randomly hmmm. I have put a lot of money into my garden this year. I hope it makes good. I had to have a guy come break up the ground for me, cuz I don't have a tractor yet. I didn't start anything from seed except the beans, peas, corn and cucumbers. I bought cherry and pear maters plants and the other plants I bought were several other varieties of maters, Gypsy and banana peppers, zucchini and straight neck squash and cantaloupe. Thing that is all. Hope my gourds come up when I get them planted. I'm late on that but we'll see.

I've tilled and planted seed. Dug and tapped plants. I have a lot of sweat equity in this as well. I know if the garden does well, I have a lot more work and sweat equity to go to get stuff picked, prepped, canned and frozen. If God will send the rains it should all do great. I'm praying he gives me the strength to work 12 hr days and come home and process the garden.

If not, then next year it will all be bought at the farmers market. I use to grow a great garden, but haven't really had a real garden in several years. It sure makes me miss Pop during gardening season. We were a lot of help to each other, and his knowledge well he knew all the right gardening stuff.

I wanted to post this because several of you have posted such kind rep comments about a friend of mine.

Was looking for the R.I.P. thread but this will have to suffice.

I got word this morning my friend passed away last night. He battled cancer for 1.5 years. Tim was The Good Guy. I even got him a t-shirt back in January with that printed on it. He loved it!

I was over at his house this past weekend for a long visit. He seemed good for what was going on. We made pictures, laughed a lot, talked funny old times. His appetite was good, he ate more than me that day. Wednesday I bought a couple of chuck roasts. I called him this morning. He didn't answer so I left a message that we'd have a roast and vegetables lunch at his house tomorrow if he was up to it. His brother called me back immediately and told me of Tim's passing.

I am honored to have known such a fine human being. We were friends for about 10 years.

The ones of you in recovery may understand this a little better when I say:
"Tim not only talked the talk but also walked the walk." He always had an outstretched hand to those who had not quite yet given up their struggle with their mood altering type of addiction.

"Tim, may you rest now in peace, my dear sweet friend."

Putting aside the absurd level of neediness inherent in having a set of these for just a minute; how in the hell can anyone even get any sleep with a pillow light going off like it's July 4th anytime anyone gets up in the middle of the night to use the restroom, get a midnight snack, or just can't sleep?

Scientists in the Netherlands have achieved a breakthrough in quantum teleportation that could quash Albert Einstein’s objection to the notion of quantum entanglement, which he famously labelled “spooky action at a distance”.

Publishing their results in the journal Science this Thursday, physicists at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at Delft University say they managed to reliably teleport quantum information between two bits of diamond located three metres apart.

Although this is not the same process as teleportation as imagined in science fiction, one of the lead authors of the paper Professor Ronald Hanson, said that it was possible that Star Trek-style “beaming up” would become a reality in the future.

“What we are teleporting is the state of a particle,'' said Professor Hanson. ''If you believe we are nothing more than a collection of atoms strung together in a particular way, then in principle it should be possible to teleport ourselves from one place to another.”

“In practice it's extremely unlikely, but to say it can never work is very dangerous," Professor Hanson added. "I would not rule it out because there's no fundamental law of physics preventing it. If it ever does happen it will be far in the future.”

However, this is not to say that the discovery of Professor Hanson and his team won’t have startling effects in the present, with accurate teleportation of quantum information a key step towards building quantum networks exponentially more powerful and secure than today’s supercomputers.

While regular computers store information in bits (signals which exist as only a 0 or a 1) quantum computing uses ‘qubits’ which can hold multiple values at the same time. Getting these bits to communicate with one another as the physicists at Delft say they have could then be key to making an unhackable network of quantum computers.

"The main application of quantum teleportation is a quantum version of the internet, extending a global network that we can use to send quantum information," said Professor Hanson.

"What you're doing is using entanglement as your communication channel. The information is teleported to the other side, and there's no way anyone can intercept that information."

Einstein himself doubted the existence of quantum entanglement, a phenomenon in which particles located as far away as opposite sides of the universe remain inextricably linked. Whatever happens to one particle instantaneously happens to the other like a quantum-powered Voodoo doll.

Einstein's theory of General Relativity does not contradict quantum theory - but scientists have found it hard to create a model in which the two co-exist.
With tthis comparison in mind it’s perhaps not surprising that Einstein – and many other physicists with him – found it hard to believe in entanglement, which was predicted by the theories of quantum mechanics long before scientists had the technology to test it.

In a letter written in 1947 Einstein said he could not take quantum mechanics seriously because "physics should represent a reality in time and space, free from spooky actions at a distance."

The team at Delft's experiments show that we're getting better all the time at creating these "spooky actions", but their experiments will have to be duplicated over far greater distances to show that signals between entangled particles occur at the speed of light.

Still, this represents a major step forward for physics, with the quantum information (data about the spin state of an electron) transferred accurately in their tests 100 per cent at the time. This is a far better success rate than a previous experiment from the University of Maryland in 2009, which teleported quantum information only once every 100 million attempts.

In the Maryland experiments though, this one-in-a-100-million success rate still meant that a qubit of information took only 10 minutes to successfully transfer. This gives some indication of the staggering speeds at which even the most basic elements of a quantum computer function.

Seattleimage, Washington (The Adobo Chronicles) - Amazon, the largest online retailer of books and other commercial products, has issued an apology for an embarrassing shipping error in which it mailed out a 1987 porn movie to customers who ordered Hillary Clinton’s new book, ‘Hard Choices.’ The porn flick, directed by Ron Sullivan who passed away from cancer in 2008, had the exact same title as Clinton’s book.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos who recently bought The Washington Post for $250 Million, personally called Mrs. Clinton to apologize for what he called a serious computer glitch. Bezos said that an Amazon summer intern typed in the wrong International Standard Book Number (ISBN) when he was generating the bar code for Clinton’s book. The intern apparently typed in the ISBN for the porn video.image

It wasn’t immediately known how many copies of the video have so far been shipped to customers.

Bezos also apologized to Amazon’s customers who received the wrong order, saying Amazon will immediately ship the correct item. He is matching the apology with a $50 Amazon gift card for future online purchases.

As for the porn video, Bezos said customers who received it in error can keep it at no charge. “No need to ship it back.”
