Seen during sunset over Lake Winnipeg near Victoria Beach, Manitoba, a single, majestic beam of light stretches straight up into the sky creating the visual phenomenon called a “sun pillar.”

A sun pillar is created by sunlight bouncing off free-floating ice crystals in the atmosphere. These free-floating crystals, however, must be arranged in a similar orientation and be slightly tipped toward the viewer in order for the sun pillar to form.

This beautiful image shows one of the spiral arms of the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy, also known as M83 or NGC 5236.
This galaxy is located about 15-million light-years from Earth in the constellation Hydra.
M83 is a barred spiral galaxy and is one of the closest such objects to Earth; it is easily visible with binoculars.

This particular image, taken in 2009 by the Hubble Space telescope, imaged wavelengths from ultraviolet and near-infrared, revealing the history of star formation in this sector of the galaxy.
Here, you can see M83’s galactic core, many bright blue star forming areas containing stars between 1 and 10 million years, and the remnants of about 60 supernovae.

It was on this day in 1931 that "The Star-Spangled Banner" became the official national anthem of the United States.

The lyrics come from a poem written by Francis Scott Key more than a century before, "Defence of Fort McHenry." He'd spent a night toward the end of the War of 1812 hearing the British navy bombard Baltimore, Maryland. The bombardment lasted 25 hours — and in the dawn's early light, Francis Scott Key emerged to see the U.S. flag still waving over Fort McHenry. He jotted the poem "Defence of Fort McHenry" on the back of an envelope. Then he went to his hotel and made another copy, which was printed in the Baltimore American a week later.

The tune for the "Star-Spangled Banner" comes from an old British drinking song called "To Anacreon in Heaven," which was very popular at men's social clubs in London during the 1700s. Francis Scott Key himself did the pairing of the tune to his poem. It was a big hit.

For the next century, a few different anthems were used at official U.S. ceremonies, including "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and "Hail Columbia." The U.S. Navy adopted "The Star-Spangled Banner" for its officialdom in 1889, and the presidency did in 1916. But it wasn't until this day in 1931 — just 82 years ago — that Congress passed a resolution and Hoover signed into law the decree that "The Star-Spangled Banner" was the official national anthem of the United States of America.

This A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y stunning celestial region is the Lagoon nebula (also known as Messier 8), which is depicted in this newly released image,
captured by the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope from Mauna Kea in Hawaii.

The Lagoon nebula stretches more than 100 light-years across in our night sky, some 4,000 light-years away from our solar system embedded in the disk of the Milky Way.
The prominent pink areas are emission of ionized hydrogen atoms, created by ultraviolet radiation streaming from massive blue-white newborn stars at the heart of the cluster.

I love the [I]tone of the images, and the bizarre whimsy that I find in them... and there is something about the portrayal of 'man' ( in suits no less) trying to harness and control the landscapes and elements that are found organically in nature.

There's also a sense of movement in this series that i love...i also love that there is a narrative evident...the images lull me into wanting to deconstruct that story. I'm a sucker for the idea of static images creating/suggestion momentum and movement/story.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — An alternative to cremation that was shot down a few years ago by New Hampshire’s House is making a comeback.

The House votes Wednesday whether to allow human bodies to be dissolved into a soapy liquid.

The process uses lye, 300-degree heat and 60 pounds of pressure per square inch to destroy bodies in big stainless-steel cylinders. It leaves behind a coffee-colored liquid with the consistency of motor oil and a strong ammonia smell.

If you do this for one complete year, you will have 365 positions recorded. If you superimpose these positions onto one image, you will notice a pattern. An obscure figure 8. This pattern is referred to as a Solar Analemma!

______________I’ve been thinking the past weeks about words…the words we say to people we know…how they affect them – how they might be hurtful…there is that very familiar quote that says:

“Oh the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as they are—chaff and grain together-certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with the breath of kindness blow the rest away.”

________I think that quote – gets used as an “excuse” sometimes for people to think they can just say anything they want to say to friends or loved ones or partners or wives or husbands – because they think – well – I can say what I feel (because) I love them or (because) I’ve know them so long – they will understand – or they won’t take it the wrong way – or gosh – even if I do upset them – it’s okay – (because) well…they should know “how” I meant it – or it shouldn’t upset them – because well...it just shouldn’t …because I’ve known them so long or I love them…so that gives me “license” to just say whatever I want – because it makes (me) feel better. Well, I’m sorry – but no – (wrong answer).

If I have known you for so long – (or) if I love you…I should give (more) weight to my words or thoughts (because) I love you or have been friends with you so long … I should care (more) about how my words might affect you (or) hurt or upset you. Just because I am “comfortable” with you – doesn’t give me license to say anything to you I want without thought to the consequence of how my words might affect you…if I love you and am your friend – I should care (more)…I shouldn’t just get to say anything I want – and expect you to keep what is worth saying and “blow the rest away” … to (my) way of thinking – I should care enough (and) be responsible enough to say things (not) in a hurtful way – and not make (you) responsible for my lack of not being able to think before I speak.

I think the quote was intended as a way of saying I am “comfortable” enough in being brave enough to “talk to” or “discuss” with you (after giving thoughtful care of how and when and where to do that)…but not just “say whatever I want – whenever I want” and you will understand because we are friends or because I love you.

For me – and again, for me only … BECAUSE I care about my long-time friends or even acquaintances and especially to the one I love – I absolutely want to “take care” in how I speak and how I say things – and what I say – or how they might “take or rather understand” what I am saying or writing – why should I want them to have sift through “bad or crappy” things I might say – just because I think I “can” and they will just “blow” it away as if the lack of respect I might have for them in (not) taking care of how I speak will have no effect on them whatsoever…

Me: I don’t think you are pretty.

She: (no words) – but long pause –

____________________AND I go on to tell her…as she listens intently…

____ANYONE can try to look (or) look pretty. I always smile when I hear someone say to a woman … “you look pretty today” – as if – they didn’t or won’t look pretty yesterday or tomorrow – that their “prettiness” is based on their hair or nails or the new dress or the “something outward” – and maybe that is the case … I love that women– take that care to “look pretty” – but pretty seems to come and go – at times – pretty gets washed off with the make-up …at night – or goes away when they take off the party dress – or the nails aren’t done…

SO – I said to (her) – I don’t think you are (just) pretty – because pretty comes and goes… what you are is (beautiful) … because beauty is an “always kind of thing” – when you are (beautiful) you can wear a potato sack and look “pretty”.

Beauty – is from deep within (and) radiates to the outward … when I think of her - I think of words like graceful and devoted and bountiful in heart and spirit, kind, generous – giving always. Beautiful is a woman who believes in herself – she is strength and determination – a woman who isn’t thrown off by obstacles in her path – (her) beauty comes from confidence of experiences of having fallen and gotten back up and moved on.

(She) has a glow about her that comes from the inside and only even more so on the outside…this is because she takes care of herself – and that is beautiful – that she cares enough to take care of her health and nutrition.

(Her) beauty comes from her genuine kindness – her graciousness in (all) things – she is honorable in all things- she is gentle and thoughtful and unselfish – and she (thinks) before she speaks – she has honor in how she speaks with others – (she) is beautiful because she honors God and is faithful in her beliefs. (She) is beautiful because she continues to grow and learn and is always striving to be a better person (for) herself and those she cares about. (She) is beautiful because she doesn’t shrink herself down to fit into a mold of what “others” think she should be.

(She) is beautiful – because she shares her heart in a million different ways to everyone around her – but yet, knows and respects enough to know she must take care of (her) too. Yes, (she) is pretty – she is (amazing so) actually – as I have said – a smile that stopped me dead in my tracks – and takes my breath away daily – but I (really) can say – it is her (heart) – her (inner beauty) that defines her so – put the two together – and well…you have a little bit of Grace Kelly, Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn and Lady Di – all rolled into one (true story).

She is graciousness and the word “lady” defined – by example (from the inside out) in every sort of way … so, do I think she is “just” pretty. No, I will stand by my original statement any day of the week – she is (not) pretty – she is the very definition of beautiful…. (and) me? Well… as you might guess…I remain the single most lucky guy in the entire world. Hands down.

(and yes - I know that I am full of all that (romantic/mushy feeling stuff) - but you know what ... I wouldn't want it any other way...for who she makes me feel is (indeed) the most incredible feeling - ever.)

When you meet your soul mate, you don't recognize the face. You don't walk up to that person and know by looking at that person he or she is your soul mate. Many times you are brought together by circumstances that seem like coincidence. It's about a feeling of being awakened. For me, I was totally taken off guard and, at first, was totally thrown off balance...like the rug had been pulled from under my feet. The thought of them will send chills down your spine. You'll know that even if you are apart trying to deny the feeling NOTHING that happens will change the way you feel. Just the touch of their hand on yours gives you a feeling that cannot be described. Being in their presence will give you a feeling that is unparalled. This person never leaves your thoughts or your heart. It will feel like that person is somehow imprinted into you now. A part of you that will remain no matter what. I believe that soul mates exist on a higher level of love. There is a strong connection that is present that is simply just there. You can almost communicate with that person without even speaking.

You may come from different backgrounds, different countries, be twenty years apart, none of that has any bearing on whether you are perfectly matched. you see more in each other than the naked eye could ever see. You see into each other's souls which is why you have this deep, strong link.

When you meet this special person you WILL know. It will be instinctive and it will be different from any feeling that you have ever had for anyone in the past.
Both of you know without a doubt you were brought together for a reason
The relationship has a deep sense of purpose
You become one without losing your individual identities
You see yourself in the other person’s eyes
