Bear drives car into tree in Grand Lake, gets rescued by officials



VAIL, Colo. -- A bear was rescued after driving itself into a tree in the town of Grand Lake last Saturday.

The bear was trapped inside the vehicle when it put the car in neutral, striking a tree on County Road 4651 in Grand Lake, according to the VailDaily.

So, I had tickets to the Poi Dog Pondering concert tonight at the historic Vic theater in Chicago. These tickets were purchased last month, BEFORE the Cubs started kicking ass in the playoffs. They are playing the Dodgers tonight at Wrigley Field. Decided to blow off the concert and try to get tickets to the game instead. Only tickets I could find were online auctions, so I bid and bid. I was outbid on 3 occasions, on the fourth attempt, BINGO!

So, I am spending what amounts to as a third world country's GDP, so what? How many times will I see the Cubs in this position, so close to the World Series? Tired of being baseballs laughing stock.

Indian police sting breaks up fraud ring that targeted Americans and Canadians through IRS and CRA scam

On Oct. 5, Indian authorities rounded up 70 people in Thane, India, suspected of running an expansive call-centre racket that perpetrated a notorious scam involving fake Internal Revenue Agency calls to U.S. citizens.

The arrests have now proven to have a Canadian twist.

Since the bust, a Canadian version of the scam – this one using fake calls from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) – has unexpectedly disappeared, the RCMP announced on Friday.

“After the police operation in Thane, the RCMP observed that the number of reports related to the CRA scam had significantly decreased to a small fraction of what was reported for the weeks and months leading up to these arrests,” the Mounties stated in a press release.

The imposters tell their victims they owe a large debt to the federal tax-collection agency and demand immediate payment by credit card, wire transfer or iTunes gift cards.

The callers threaten the victims, saying that any failure to pay the back taxes will result in jail time.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has received reports from victims of losses totalling $5.7-million. The organization has estimated that this represents just 5 per cent of the total losses in this country.

In all, nearly 40,000 people reported getting the calls.

Other versions of the scam involve imposters claiming to represent Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada as well as various police agencies.

According to police in Mumbai, at least 700 people worked in the call centres, which netted more than $150,000 (U.S.) a day.

Officers seized computers, servers and other equipment in raids. Police charged the alleged ringleaders with extortion, impersonation and violations of the country’s information-technology laws.

An FBI cybercrime expert is working on the ground in Thane to share evidence, according to the Indian broadcaster NDTV.

Indian police are scouring the country for 23-year-old Sagar Thakkar, also known as “Shaggy,” the alleged mastermind of the multimillion-dollar racket.

I hate that some of us feel we have to find bras to stop our nipples from showing. That ad, well, I remember those times...it brings to mind "Three's Company" and you could always see their nips through their t-shirts. I know that show was so very sexist and objectifying, but it does prove how society changes with its dictates on what is publicly 'presentable' for women's bodies. Why do I have to worry about taking measures to prevent people from seeing my nipples show through my clothing? I resent that!

Today in idiotic nonsense, some dummies are telling a beauty pageant contestant that she’s too fat. Here we go again!

The Iceland Monitor reports that Arna Ýr Jónsdóttir, Miss Iceland 2015, was told by the owner of the Miss Grand International beauty contest that she needs to lose weight by Tuesday’s finale.

Arna Ýr says she was told to, “Stop eating breakfast, eat just salad for lunch and drink water every evening until the contest,” by spokespeople for the founder and owner of the Miss Grand International beauty contest, Thai TV presenter Nawat Itsaragrisil.

The pageant, which I’ve never heard of but is apparently legit and happens in Las Vegas in a few days, told her that Itsaragrisil wanted to give her the "advice" to lose the non-existent chub because he likes her and wants her to do well. So sweet!

And she told them to go fuck themselves.

“I intend to stand up for myself, women everywhere and the Icelandic people. I will not let them tell me I am too fat to look good on stage. I have quit. I will not be taking part in Miss Grand In­ternati­onal.”

Dog Waits On Curb For Over A Month After His Family Moves Away


When a family moved out of their Detroit home, they left a lot of junk on the curb: a mattress, a couple of dressers. Pillows.

And a dog named Boo.

Of course, Boo didn't know they weren't coming back. There was the old bed he knew so well, with the old familiar scents. Why not crawl onto it and wait?

Man Dressed As Tree Arrested

It is an indisputable fact that trees don't belong in the street. Luckily, we have law enforcement to deal with such situations. Yesterday in Portland, Maine, police successfully arrested a stubborn human tree, who was blocking traffic at a busy intersection.

The piney perp "went to Congress Square wearing what appeared to be branches from an evergreen tree," the Portland Press-Herald reports. Police approached him, lifted the needly branches from his face, and told him to stay out of traffic. When he walked into the road, they arrested him for obstructing a public way. Video shows the tree slowly shuffling down the crosswalk, flanked by officers.

The offending tree man, Asher A. Woodworth, is a local artist. His previous work includes various professional dance performances, as well as stealing the pepper from a local Chili's sign. He describes himself as an "impulsive" person who "believes in physical labor and the unity of opposites." Photo and video evidence suggest he made a really convincing tree.

Bachelor Party groomsmen cooking bacon in cabin... dog shows up at the door

'We were cooking bacon with the door open. The next thing you know, there’s this dog sitting right at the front door.

'She wouldn’t come inside but she sat right there.

'After we gave her a bunch of food and water she started producing milk again. So we figured if she’s making milk, her pups can’t be that old,' he said.

There, they found her seven puppies in a hole.

The group washed the dogs of fleas and dirt and took them back to the cabin to look after them.

Now all of the dogs live with the men in a five-mile radius.

My Halloween


Luckily, the weather turned out an A-ok for the little ghouls and boys who came out to relieve me of pant-loads of candy. My neighbor and her husband came over for the few hours to dole out the goods. She had a Sarah Palin mask and he had a Salvador Dali. They are both eclectic artsy fartsy types, so I wasn't surprised at the Dali.

Neighbor on the other side who has a stressful life caring for his wife of 50 years with alzheimer decided to also join the festivities. He brought his Burmese Mountain dog to add to the fun! (When the kids asked what kind of dog she was, I said she is a Chihuahua dressed up as a Burmese Mountain dog for Halloween. Heehee)

So many kids had good to great costumes and were courteous and friendly (with the exception of the few whom I made cry due to the horrifying nature of my costume.) My favorite trick or treat costumes were the two girls who had characters from "The Purge" movie. Creepy cool!

There is no better way to get closer to your neighbors than celebrating a holiday or festival in such a public fashion. Now, I know my cool neighbors have a hot tub on their back deck. "HELLO, I'm coming over with champagne and water ready clothing!"

Too many parents brought their infants by, now who gives candy to an infant? They just wanted free candy......pfffft

Day of the Dead is an interesting holiday celebrated in central and southern Mexico during the chilly days of November 1 & 2. Even though this coincides with the Catholic holiday called All Soul's & All Saint’s Day, the indigenous people have combined this with their own ancient beliefs of honoring their deceased loved ones.

They believe that the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31, and the spirits of all deceased children (angelitos) are allowed to reunite with their families for 24 hours. On November 2, the spirits of the adults come down to enjoy the festivities that are prepared for them.

In most Indian villages, beautiful altars (ofrendas) are made in each home. They are decorated with candles, buckets of flowers (wild marigolds called cempasuchil & bright red cock's combs) mounds of fruit, peanuts, plates of turkey mole, stacks of tortillas and big Day-of-the-Dead breads called pan de muerto. The altar needs to have lots of food, bottles of soda, hot cocoa and water for the weary spirits. Toys and candies are left for the angelitos, and on Nov. 2, cigarettes and shots of mezcal are offered to the adult spirits. Little folk art skeletons and sugar skulls, purchased at open-air markets, provide the final touches.

500,000 Baby Turtles to be Released to Help Save Vulnerable Species.

Conservationists have a reason to shell-abrate.

On Saturday, environmental authorities and community caretakers in Peru released almost 17,000 newborn yellow-spotted Amazon River turtles into the wild. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the animals as vulnerable on its Red List of Threatened Species.

This was the first in a series of three releases Peruvian authorities have planned, CNN reported. By mid-November, they hope to release more than 500,000 of the turtles, known locally as “taricaya,” into the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, a protected area in northeastern Peru’s Amazon River basin.

Adult taricaya lay their eggs on riverbanks in the area, where they are exposed to predators and poaching. To ensure that the vulnerable eggs are protected, community members and employees from Peruvian government agencies, including the National Service of Protected Natural Areas, remove and care for them until they hatch.

Over the summer, a five-man team, including a diver and historian, located the J.S. Seaverns freighter that sank in Canada near Michipicoten Harbor, Ontario, in 1884, along with piles of unbroken dishes and other century-old items, the Duluth News Tribune reported last week.

Dan Fountain, who helped find the ruins described the wreckage as being “in beautiful shape.”

“The upper cabins are somewhat broken up ... [but] the hull itself seems to be totally intact,” he told the News Tribune.

Outside, the ship’s helm wheel leans against what Fountain described as the starboard side of the wreck. In the ship’s kitchen, also known as a galley, there are stacks of plates on shelves. In another area they’re seen piled up, appearing completely intact.

“The Seaverns sank in rather benign conditions,” Fountain told Sudbury.com. “It was a calm day, it wasn’t a violent wreck. It went down rather smoothly, apparently. ... It settled on an even keel on the bottom.”

This Display Of Bravery And Skill Is What Female Surfers Have Been Fighting For

In powerful, sometimes violent waves, six women faced off Friday during the World Surf League’s first big-wave surfing competition for women at Jaws, a famed surf break on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

Female surfers have been fighting for years to be included in contests like this, but organizers previously said conditions for big-wave surf contests were too dangerous for women.

But Friday’s display of strength and bravery in waves of up to 30 feet prove that, just like male athletes, women are a force to be reckoned with.

The women expertly charged the dangerous swells, showing grace and intense control on the waves. Only three contestants made it to the finals, because a violent sneaker wave rose suddenly during the event, injuring three competitors.

Paige Alms won the contest. But all six athletes made history as the first female big-wave surfers to compete in an official World Surf League event since the league was founded in 1976.

Supermoon begins tonight! Not another one until 2034

On Nov. 14, skywatchers will be treated to a supermoon so big and bright that it’s being billed as a “super-dupermoon” or an “extra-supermoon.”

Supermoons aren’t especially uncommon, but this will be the nearest that a full moon has come to Earth since January 26, 1948. The full moon won’t get this close again until November 25, 2034.

The term supermoon refers to a full moon that occurs when our planet’s natural satellite is at its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit. Astronomers call that point perigee, and so “perigee moon” is another term for supermoon. (The point at which the moon is most distant from Earth in its orbit is known as apogee.)

A supermoon can appear up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than an apogee full moon, according to NASA. The effect is most pronounced when the moon is viewed near the horizon.

This supermoon is one of three to occur during the last three months of 2016. There was a supermoon on Oct. 16, and there will be another on Dec. 14. But this one coming up will be the most special of the lot ― so try not to miss it.

What’s the best way to see the supermoon?

“Just find a dark area clear of trees,” Dr. Noah Petro, a scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, told The Huffington Post in an email. “Anytime after dark is good and once the moon is up. There is no prime time when people have to do it, but the moon has to have risen for people to see it! : )”

Walnut goes on final walk with dad and hundreds of friends.

Walnut met his dad, Mark Woods, when he was just a puppy, and the pair was best friends from the very beginning.

The whippet lived a happy and loving life with his dad in England, but at 18 years old, his health was rapidly declining. His family had to make the tough decision to have him put down.

Woods was heartbroken at the thought of losing his beloved best friend, and he decided that before Walnut passed, he wanted to take him on one last walk — and he wanted the whole world to join them.

"Sadly I am having to have Walnut euthanized on Saturday 12th November and so we will be having a last walk together on his beloved Porth Beach at 9:30 a.m.," Woods wrote on Facebook last week. "I would love it if dog lovers/owners and friends would join us for a celebration of Walnut."

Thousands of people shared the Facebook post, all wanting to give Walnut the best final send-off a dog could ask for. Walnut's family hoped that at least a handful of people would show up — and were shocked at just how many people actually came.

On Saturday at 9:30 a.m., hundreds of people showed up on Porth Beach to walk alongside Walnut as he took in the sights and smells of his favorite place in the world one last time.

At 56, astronaut Peggy Whitson is quite a bit younger than John Glenn was when ― in 1998 ― he became the oldest human to ever travel in space at age 77. But on Thursday, Whitson will set her own record when she rockets off the planet to become the oldest spacewoman ever.

And it gets even better. Whitson will turn 57 in February while she’s orbiting on the International Space Station, reports the Associated Press. Previously Barbara Morgan held the distinction of oldest woman in space with her 2007 trip at 55.

“I think it gets easier as you get older,” Whitson told the Des Moines Register. “You know what to worry about and what not to worry about. You prioritize your effort. It’s the ‘work smarter, not harder’ that with experience is much easier to do.”

Jimi Hendrix, arguably the world’s greatest ever guitar hero, would've been 74 years old today. When he died, he was just twenty-seven-years-old, but in just a few years he expanded the range and vocabulary of the electric guitar to reach areas that no musician had ever ventured to before. We unearth some of Jimi’s tales from beyond the grave.

Born in Seattle, USA, on November 27th 1942, his mother named him John Allen Hendrix and raised him while his father, James “Al” Hendrix, was fighting in World War II. When his father returned from Europe in 1945 he took Jimi home, divorced his wife, and renamed him James Marshall. He didn’t become Jimi Hendrix until he arrived in London in 1966. The Animals’ bassist Chas Chandler, who became his manager, suggested he swap James for Jimi.

He dropped out of High School and enlisted in the Army in May 1959, becoming a member of ‘The Screaming Eagles’ 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, as a trainee paratrooper. Fortunately for music fans everywhere, less than a year later he received a medical discharge after breaking an ankle on his twenty-sixth parachute jump.

His father encouraged his musical talents, buying Jimi his first $5 acoustic guitar when he was fifteen-years-old and setting him on the path to his future vocation. A year later Al purchased his first electric guitar, a Supro Ozark 1560S.

Jimi worked as a session guitarist under the moniker Jimmy James. By the end of 1965 he had played with several acts, including Ike And Tina Turner, Sam Cooke, The Isley Brothers, and Little Richard. His shows with Little Richard became caught up in a dispute over Jimi’s flashy garb - Richard felt nothing should distract attention away from his star power and so Jimi parted ways to form Jimmy James And The Blue Flames, shedding the role of back-line guitarist for the spotlight of lead guitar.

Homeless Woman


I was approached yesterday by a woman who said she was sleeping in her car...

due to being a victim of domestic abuse (boyfriend in jail, shunned by family).

I don't usually carry cash, so she went on to someone else.

I felt bad and called to her asking if she would like for me to buy her something to eat at the fast food restaurant across the parking lot. On the walk over, we shared a little bit of our lives with each other. She was very appreciative. And honestly, it felt really, really good to be able to do something like that for another human being, especially given all the hate that I have witnessed during the election season.

Giving a gift to others is also giving a gift to ourselves. Sure you may be scammed, but if they are that desperate, why not give them the benefit of the doubt? We are all in this together. We are all connected.

I have seen more homeless each year in Chicago. The desperate are getting more and more desperate. The 1% better build higher and higher walls because the days of pitchforks are a-comin'. We need to address the mentally ill, stop cutting resources and assist these people. Throwing them in a privatized prison system or out on the street is asking for a multitude of problems.

Under this administration, these issues will multiply.

When 17-year-old James Charles was named the first male ambassador for CoverGirl this month, the company’s message was simple: “All of our CoverGirls are role models and boundary-breakers, fearlessly expressing themselves, standing up for what they believe and redefining what it means to be beautiful,” the makeup brand said in a press release. “James Charles is no exception.”

But one mother did take exception to the brand’s inclusive message, penning an article for the Homeschool Conservative lamenting the impact a male CoverGirl had on her 6-year-old son.

“Mommy, why doesn’t daddy wear makeup,” 6-year-old Mark reportedly asked his mom Sarah.

“Both of us were caught off guard, we didn’t know how to answer,” Sarah wrote. “I don’t know why, but the most logical thing we could think of at that moment was to say, ‘No, that’s a girl.’”

When it became apparent that Charles is in fact a male, she told her kid, “Daddy doesn’t wear makeup because makeup is for girls.”

“Well why is that boy wearing makeup?” her son pressed Sarah wrote about the “moral dilemma” generated by her child’s inquisitive nature:

“Do I lie to my son? Or do I tell my 6-year-old my full opinion? I thought about lying and saying, ‘That’s how his eyes really look.’ Or, do I tell the truth and have a deeper discussion with him? Maybe, ‘That’s the way his mommy and daddy chose to raise him. But, that’s not the way we are choosing to raise you.’

Does a parent end it there? Or continue to say, ‘That is sinful and wrong. He shouldn’t be doing that, and his parents are wrong.’”

As most of you already know, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge Tennessee are being threatened by large forest fires. We've already heard several reports of much of historic gatlinburg already burning down.

Last around 8 PM, with the fire only miles away and a mandatory people evacuation in place, the AEF staff began conducting an emergency bird evacuation, something we have never had to do before.

Our AEF first responders wasted no time rushing from their homes to our headquarters and loading somewhere around 50-60 birds into travel kennels and into every available vehicle.

It wasn't graceful, but we did our best to retrieve every bird and then load about 40-50 pounds of raptor food along with. These birds are now resting safely in individual kennels at several AEF staff member homes 10+ miles away from the fires.

Al Cecere went to Dollywood to check on our Eagle Mountain Sanctuary Eagles...unfortunately, in the dark, with ashy hazy air, steep leafy hillsides, and other staff being turned away by police while they trying to bring extra travel kennels onto the Dollywood park, we were unable to catch up and rescue these eagles tonight.

As of now they are safe and hanging out in their aviaries, albeit the air quality is not optimal. Eagle Mountain Sanctuary houses one of the largest collections of non-releasable Bald Eagles in the world.

Several firetrucks and first responders are protecting Dollywood and we hope to receive reports in the morning from Dollywood security as to whether it's safe to come evacuate them.

Should a second evacuation take place this morning, the AEF may not have enough travel kennels/carriers to help rescue all Eagle Mountain Sanctuary Eagles (even after Petsmart donated all the kennels off of their shelves to the AEF last night).

If anyone in Sevierville/Kodak/Knoxville has Large to XL plastic dog kennels/carriers and would like to donate or loan them to the AEF please text 865-654-4223 or 865-256-0372 asap. We would be willing to set a drop-off point in Sevierville, where as of now, is safe from harm. We need these as soon as possible, just in case a second evacuation is necessary this am.

Notice: The eagles are being removed from Eagle Mountain Sanctuary this morning (Tuesday, Nov. 29) to protect them from the fires raging in the area. All of our birds are safe.

So. We come to the close of Native American Heritage Month.

The Native Americans of this country are fighting as “Water Protectors” against something we should all be fighting against: polluted water (get the background on Standing Rock). This fight goes beyond Standing Rock to places like Flint, Michigan and possibly to your own home town. In this month set aside to honor Native Americans, we have witnessed these proud People arrested and held in chain-link cages like you would use for animals. As they have gathered peacefully and exercised their constitutional rights, they have been shot with projectiles, percussion grenades, and sonic weapons. They have been tear-gassed, pepper-sprayed, beaten, and assaulted with water cannons in subzero temperatures—by a fully militarized multi-state police force.

This treatment of Native Americans is a national disgrace.

Cunningham, appearing on the radio show of Fox News’ Sean Hannity, apparently didn’t appreciate Behar’s thoughts on Donald Trump’s deal to keep Carrier in Indiana and avoid a company move to Mexico.“The problem is we’re losing jobs to robots, not to Mexicans,” Behar had said during Wednesday’s coffee klatch on ABC. “That’s the problem. We are losing to technology.” She added later that saving jobs was not the same as creating jobs.

What you see is what you focus on.

Joy has had some pretty nasty and rude comments about everything she doesnt like. This is no different. Plus she is a little short of facts.

The Carrier plant was not about automation. It was workers in Indiana training Mexican nationals in Indiana to do their jobs when the plant was moved to Mexico.

So. Joy gets called on her bull and suddenly the guy who calls her on it is a host of phobes and a raging dick? Really? Cuz he didnt use politically preferred language? Or, just because he is a man? That is some seriously bizarre logic.

1.100 blue collar work workers are really thankful for the guy, who hasnt even taken office yet, to step in to save their jobs.

But, Joy has to diss that too cuz, in her mind, it is creating jobs not saving jobs that matters. Really? Actually, it is saving and creating jobs that matter. And we have to take with a grain of salt the jobs reports claiming hundreds of jobs being created without mention of the hundreds of thousands of jobs being lost.

Joy is trying to make an issue out of her own inaccurate information and her own inability to use logic. She should be apologizing for flapping her mouth off without knowing or caring about the truth or giving a crap about the very happy 1,100 blue collar workers who are keeping their jobs.

The philosophy of "my mind is made up, dont confuse me with the facts" is getting old.

Leatherback turtle has no idea how awesome he/she is.


The giant creature, estimated to measure between 5 and 6.5 feet long, befriended some boaters in New Zealand on Tuesday.

This giant leatherback joined some boaters off Mangawhai, New Zealand on Tuesday ― and as the clip posted on Facebook by Pippa Partington shows, the big guy was very chill about the whole encounter.

Partington told New Zealand’s 1 News Now that the turtle in this case appeared to be between 5 and and 6.5 feet long. It was so big, she first thought it was a capsized dinghy.

The tail of a 99-million-year-old dinosaur, including bones, soft tissue, and even feathers, has been found preserved in amber, according to a report published today in the journal Current Biology.

Denver Police SEIZING Blankets From Homeless As Evidence Of Violation Of Camping Ban.


Temperatures in Denver have been 20 degrees to 0 degrees overnight. Shelters are over capacity. No new shelters are planned.

It is against the law in Denver to lay down on public space. You can be arrested and ticketed for violating a "camping ban" since the days of the Occupy Movement. Denver was one of the most aggressive cities in the country to dismantle the Occupy Movement. Back then even if you honked in support when driving by the encampment you were stopped and ticketed.

Local news in Denver on Friday showed Denver police taking all the blankets of homeless people who were on the street. The city has taken an aggressive stance and is seizing all the belongings of homeless people. They claim they are trying to force them to go to shelters. It is doubtful there is enough space in the shelters that are available.

Some shelters are run by religious organizations where you must pray for your supper. There are virtually no programs to help the homeless changer their fate.

So where are homeless people supposed to go. Home prices in Colorado are exploding beyond affordability for anyone even at $15 an hour. Rents are at a record high and vacancy rates are at record lows.

And that this mystery woman was incredibly tender and compassionate with Mott when she was at her grief-stricken worst in the middle of a store aisle on the morning of Black Friday. You know the scene: Typical behavior on the High Holy American shopping day after Thanksgiving is to stampede directly to some cheap plastic thing and trample everything and everybody in the way.

But Mott was graced by a more serene fellow shopper at 6:25 a.m. in the middle of Mills Fleet Farm in Ankeny, just as she received a devastating phone call.

Mott wasn’t there on a shopping spree; she only needed a pair of dog beds for her German shepherds, especially her decrepit 12-year-old pooch, Killer, whose bones ache on her hardwood floors.

That’s when the call came in from the nursing home on the south side of Des Moines where her mom lived.

“Angel, honey,” said the nurse on the phone, “your mom passed away.”

“Hoping you nice people can help me find a lady. I was out shopping on Black Friday at six in the morning at Mills Fleet Farm in Ankeny. In the middle of shopping I got a phone call that my mom had passed away. I sat down on the shelf in the aisle and must've bawled for several minutes. Some nice lady with black hair (I think) and purple highlights, sat down with me and hugged me for about five minutes. She cried with me. I would just like to thank her very much. Chicago Cops Honor Dying Police Dog With Touching Last Call



Chicago Police Department has given Officer Rachel an emotional farewell call on its radio channel.

Rachel had served 10 years in the department, where she worked tracking explosives. She recently developed a rapidly spreading cancer, according to Chicago Police Department’s Facebook page.

In her lifetime, the dog had protected the president, first lady and foreign dignitaries, reported the Chicago Tribune, which also has audio of the touching last call.

“All units standby,” a dispatcher said Sunday. “7323 canine Rachel. 7323 canine Rachel. No response for canine Rachel. This is a final call for Chicago Police Explosives canine Rachel.”

She was put down 15 minutes later.

Officer Charles Kocanda had trained Rachel. “Our condolences go out to her handler, Officer Chuck Kocanda, who worked with her daily to make sure she was the best she could be,” the police department said in its Facebook post.

The U.S. Virgin Islands wants you to visit ― so much so that they’ll give tourists $300 in spending credits for vacations there.

In honor of the centennial celebration of Denmark selling the islands to the United States, travelers who spend at least three consecutive nights on St. Thomas, St. John and/or St. Croix will receive $300 in Virgin Islands spending credits for tours and activities. Visitors who arrive during March will also receive a commemorative souvenir, in recognition of the day Denmark sold the islands, known as “Transfer Day,” on March 31.

It doesn’t matter if you book after the anniversary, as long it’s before Oct. 1 and you travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands during the 2017 calendar year, you’ll get the $300 spending credits.

Alfred Wegener first thought of this idea by noticing that the different large landmasses of the Earth almost fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. The Continental shelf of the Americas fit closely to Africa and Europe, and Antarctica, Australia, India and Madagascar fitted next to the tip of Southern Africa. But Wegener only took action after reading a paper in 1911 and seeing that a flooded land-bridge contradicts isostasy. Wegener's main interest was meteorology, and he wanted to join the Denmark-Greenland expedition scheduled for mid-1912. He presented his Continental Drift hypothesis on 6 January 1912. He analyzed both sides of the Atlantic Ocean for rock type, geological structures and fossils. He noticed that there was a significant similarity between matching sides of the continents, especially in fossil plants.

In a 2009 interview, she said that her kitchen tiles were “shaped and labeled like enormous tablets of Prozac,” which, again, is objectively fantastic. We miss you, Carrie.


*I met Carrie Fisher a few years ago at the L.A. airport, we were both in the lounge on a long layover. I knew who she was and wanted to leave her with privacy. Other people were going up to her for autographs, trying to exchange in pleasantries and other predictable acts. She was as gracious as she could be to all of them but could see she was getting annoyed.

After a couple of hours or so, they called us for boarding for which she was so grateful (I could tell.) When she walked past me, she gave me the cutest wink. ;) I smiled and nodded. Forever cherish this memory, hopefully alzheimer's will never rob me of this moment.

Oldest Evidence of Silk Found in 8,500-Year-Old Tombs


Silk proteins were found in tombs at Jiahu in the Henan Province in central China. Shown here, grottoes in Henan Province.

The oldest evidence of silk made by silkworms has been found buried in 8,500-year-old tombs in China, revealing that people may have used the luxurious material thousands of years earlier than previously thought, a new study finds.

Silk was a rare luxury good in the ancient world. Its fame helped give a name to the Silk Road, the legendary network of trade routes that once connected the East and West from China to Rome.

The secret of how to make silk was first discovered in China. According to Chinese legend, after a silkworm cocoon dropped into the teacup of the wife of the Yellow Emperor, she found that the cocoon could unravel to yield about 3,300 feet (1 kilometer) of thread.

To learn more about the origins of silk, scientists investigated ruins dating back 9,000 years at Jiahu in the middle of Henan Province in central China. Previously at this site, scientists had unearthed bone flutes that are the earliest known playable musical instruments on Earth, as well as what may be the earliest Chinese writing.

Friday the 13th: why is it unlucky and other facts about the worst day in the calendar

If you are worried about what's in store this time, then you're not alone. Psychologists have even come up with a word for how you're feeling – paraskavedekatriaphobia, or fear of Friday the 13th.

One option is to stay tucked up in bed all day to avoid any potential Friday the 13th bad luck that may come your way, or alternatively, you could ignore the superstitious chatter and embrace it.

In 2017, there happen to be two Friday the 13ths – January 13 and October 13.

Here are some fun facts to take your mind off it. As we'll discover, it may even be the belief in the Friday the 13th superstition that could, in fact, prove the greatest risk to the average person.

Rare albino deer spotted in Sacramento, California.


A rare albino deer was spotted near a sanitation plant in Sacramento after heavy rains flooded the area. Regional Sanitation staff have been tracking the deer since September and believe it was born in the spring. Screen capture/Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District/Facebook

Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District has tracked the albino deer among a pack of 12-15 black-tailed mule deer on its trail camera since September.

Flood waters in the Bufferlands surrounding the sanitation plant have forced the rare deer back into the open, according to KXTV.

"We first saw the deer in September, so we think it was born in the spring or fall," natural resource supervisor for Regional Sanitation Brian Young said.

Heartwarming video has emerged of the moment an elderly dog's chain was cut in New York after he spent 15 years tied up outside his doghouse in his owner's backyard.

Bear the dog's owner agreed to let him go after Guardians of Rescue had a phone call about his plight from someone in the community, Britain's Daily Mail reports.

Transitioning to adulthood isn't new, but there is a more modern way to describe it: adulting.

Get your car's oil changed? That's adulting. Cook dinner instead of order takeout? That's adulting.

And now a new school in Maine, called the Adulting School, is dedicated to teaching skills like these to fledgling adults so they can become successful grown-ups.

The school offers private social media groups and live events at local bars and restaurants. At these events, attendees can learn skills like how to network as a pro or how to fold a fitted sheet.

Carly Bouchard, 29, sat among a couple of dozen young adults sipping drinks at a Portland restaurant and hoping to uncover their true financial self.

"I'm a financial cripple," Bouchard said.

Although she went to business school, Bouchard said, she now needs the Adulting School.

Co-founder Rachel Weinstein got the idea for the Adulting School from her work as a psychotherapist. She noticed that a lot of her clients struggled with the transition to adulthood, like paying bills on time and choosing a career.

"I'm still a dolt," she said. "Not an 'A-dult' — a dolt — when it comes to my finances."

Adrienne Abramowitz, 25, watched a demonstration on proper folding and then grabbed a fitted sheet as her friend Emily Rice, 26, coached.

"You put it together, and then you pinch it," Abramowitz said.

But after a futile attempt, they called for help.

Despite the fun vibe, the goal behind the school is serious.

Co-founder Rachel Weinstein got the idea from her work as a psychotherapist. She noticed many of her clients struggled with the transition to adulthood. Things like paying bills on time and choosing a career were difficult for them.

"You know, when you see 10 people feeling like they're the only one, and they're all struggling with the same thing, you think, let's get these people together so they can learn this stuff and not feel so isolated and ashamed," Weinstein said.

Managing money is a common source of stress for the school's attendees.

They tend to be millennials and women. Lindsay Rowe Scala, 32, said she is trying to figure out how to save for the future and pay off school debt.

"In job interviews, they're always asking 'Where do you want to see yourself in five years?' " she said. "And I never know how to answer that because I'm always thinking on how to survive today and next week and what's coming up."

Holly Swyers, an associate professor of anthropology at Lake Forest College who has researched adulthood, said this stress goes back generations. She said part of the problem is that classes that teach life skills, like home economics, aren't emphasized and there is no dedicated place to learn adult skills.

"We go through this age-graded system, and it tells us just do this and you'll be fine," Swyers says. "And then you graduate from high school or from college, and suddenly, there's no more rules about, if you just do this step, that's what comes next."

The Adulting School has drawn criticism for its perceived coddling. But Swyers said the school deserves kudos for addressing a real problem.

As adults navigate from dependence to independence, Swyers said she would like to see more proactive approaches in helping them accomplish their transition.

Lego announced Tuesday that a new set will feature some of the pioneering women who played vital but sometimes under-appreciated roles in the U.S. space program.

The figures have been commissioned under the toy maker's Lego Ideas series that allows fans to propose concepts for new sets.

The "Women of NASA" set was designed by science writer Maia Weinstock, the deputy editor of MIT News, and pitched with the headline "Ladies rock outer space!"

Among Weinstock's figures are Sally Ride, the first American woman in space; Nancy Grace Roman, who's known as the "mother" of the Hubble Space Telescope; and Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space.

*I ordered yesterday, not one, but 10 of these Lego sets. Unfortunately typical (unless it is Barbie related) girls toys do not sell as well as the boys counterparts. Back in the 60's, GI Joe offered a GI Joe "nurse" doll to compete with Barbie. Here’s how to dye Easter eggs with spices, vegetables, and pantry ingredients in your kitchen! It’s fun and something different.

The Easter egg symbolizes new life and coloring eggs is a longtime tradition. This year, try something different. Instead of using artificial dyes, try dyeing eggs the old-fashioned way—with spices, food, and plants!

It’s neat (not to mention educational) to see how different foods create different colors; the eggs “transform” without a magic wand!

Natural Dye Colors

Here are some vegetables that produce more vivid colors. Per one cup of water, use:

Two teaspoons ground tumeric to turn eggs yellow.

One cup shredded beets to turn eggs pink.

One cup chopped purple cabbage to turn eggs blue.

One cup red onion skins to turn eggs red or purple.

One bag of black tea to turn eggs brown.

One cup of chopped yellow onion skins to turn eggs orange.

Also try coffee, paprika, and blueberries—which readers say make beautiful colors!
How to Dye Eggs Naturally

Eggs need to be at room temperature. (Take hard-boiled eggs out of refrigerator about 20 minutes before you need them.)

Note: For every dozen eggs, you’ll need four cups of dyed water. So, select four different dyes from the ingredient list above (or, make one big batch of one color).

Bring the water and ingredients mixture to a boil, and then turn down the heat to simmer the ingredient for about 30 minutes.

Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of white vinegar to help the egg shell absorb the dye.

Dip the eggs into the lukewarm solution. The longer they are saturated in the dyed water, the more vivid the color. We prefer to let the eggs sit overnight in the liquid bath to steep. If you only have 30 minutes, see what color they turn in that amount of time!

Let the eggs dry, and then massage in a little vegetable oil to each one and polish with a towel.

Now, you can hide the colored ggs, eat the eggs, or use them as pretty decorations on Easter Day! Keep them cool in the refrigerator before you eat them!

Here’s another idea that the older kids especially love—tie dye!

Hard-boil some large white eggs (use brown eggs for darker colors) and allow them to cool.

One way to color an egg with an interesting tie-dyed effect is to wrap a number of long rubber bands of various widths around the egg, covering the entire egg.

The rubber bands should be long enough to wrap around the egg a couple of times. (If the bands keep popping off, don’t wrap them quite so tightly, or use thicker bands.)

Dip the egg into homemade or store-bought dye.

Remove from dye and let dry.

Remove some or all of the rubber bands, then wrap them around the egg again and soak it in a different color until you have the shade you want.

Allow to dry and remove the rubber bands. You should now have a uniquely interesting egg.

Another way to create a tie-dyed look is by wrapping and twisting damp strips of cloth tightly around an egg.

Drop different colors of dye onto the cloth and let the colors blend together.

Let the egg sit until the cloth is dry, then carefully unwrap the egg.

Serena Williams isn't just an athlete. She's an icon, a person who needs no last name. Putting her body on display is something she takes very seriously, whether on the cover of a magazine, on the tennis court, or wandering around with friends. When hawking her clothing line on Home Shopping Network a few years back, she noted that long sleeved shirts helped her remain incognito, as people could identify her from her muscular arms.

The arms that are her calling card also send balls over the net at 120-miles per hour. They are the same arms that ignited a fire in Ben Rothenberg's discussion in the New York Times of how women on the court balance body image with ambition. Critics of Rothenberg's piece called out how it accepted the norms presented about women's bodies, especially black ones, and what they can do, instead of challenging them. As the most successful tennis player of all time (yes, that is a premise here, not an argument to be made), Serena's story is that strength and success and speed and determination and dedication come in all shapes and sizes, gender be damned.

An athlete like Serena can't be the exception to a belief that one is a woman first, and an athlete second. She is who she is because she works damn hard to get that way. And it works. On display on the cover of Vanity Fair is the body that won the Australian Open last December while eight weeks pregnant, never dropping a set. It is the body that has accomplished, as the article inside says, an aggregate winning percentage over 85%. It is the body that has won 72 Women's Tennis Association tournaments. It is the body that has made it to 29 Grand Slam singles finals, winning 23 times (10 times after after it turned 30). It is the body that plays doubles with sister Venus, to the tune of 14 Grand Slam titles. It is the body that has won four Olympic gold medals. It is the body that has won nearly $84 million in prize money, never mind her endorsement deal earnings.

Vet Reunites With Wild Turtle Whose Shell She Once Repaired


Shannon Moore discovered her old patient while on a recent walk.

Years after helping treat a badly injured turtle in a feat of medical engineering, an Ohio veterinarian had the unexpected pleasure to reunite with her old patient.

“Several years ago, a client brought me a box turtle that had been hit by a car,” Shannon Moore, owner of Hocking Hills Animal Clinic in Logan, Ohio, wrote on Facebook last week.

“I used fiberglass to repair his broken shell and then released him in my woods. Recently, while walking on my hillside, I spotted an odd pattern in the leaves.”

That odd pattern turned out to be the shell of the very turtle she had helped out years before.

While Moore didn’t keep a record of the exact date when she treated the turtle, it was “at least two years between treating and finding him” and may have been closer to three years, Moore told HuffPost in an email.
