Texas Man Shoots Armadillo, Bullet Ricochets Back In His Own Face


DALLAS (Reuters) - An East Texas man was wounded after he fired a gun at an armadillo in his yard and the bullet ricocheted back to hit him in his face, the county sheriff said on Friday.

Cass County Sheriff Larry Rowe said the man, who was not identified, went outside his home in Marietta, southwest of Texarkana, at around 3 a.m. on Thursday morning. He spotted the armadillo on his property and opened fire.

“His wife was in the house. He went outside and took his .38 revolver and shot three times at the armadillo,” Rowe said.

The animal’s hard shell deflected at least one of three bullets, which then struck the man’s jaw, he said.

The man was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where his jaw was wired shut, according to Rowe.

“We didn’t find the armadillo,” the sheriff said.

'Inappropriate' social media post disqualifies Atlee softball team from championship game


Jamie Batten, the president of Atlee Little League, released a statement late Saturday night about the softball team's disqualification due to an inappropriate Snapchat post.

"We are deeply disappointed this social media post did not reflect the core values of Little League International or Atlee Little League," he wrote. "We expect Little League International will take the time to fully investigate the matter, and we will comply with this investigation by providing all information about unpleasant interactions including the social media post and the time leading up to that event - not all of which were on the part of those on the Atlee softball team.

"We desire to protect all youth who are recipients of inappropriate behavior both on and off the field, as we take very seriously our charge to impart the value of good sportsmanship."

Just hours before players were set to take the field on national television at the Junior League World Series, the Atlee Little League softball team was disqualified from the tournament because of a social media post.

Atlee, which had been undefeated all week in the tournament in Kirkland, Wash., prevailed 1-0 on Friday in a feisty semifinal game against the host team from Kirkland. The event is for the best 12-to-15-year-old girls teams in the world.

After Friday’s game, a member of the Atlee team posted a picture on Snapchat showing six members of the team showing their middle fingers. The caption made it clear the gesture was intended for the Kirkland team.

There may be no clearer sign of a computer novice than the failure to use keyboard shortcuts.

My mom, for instance, has been using a computer regularly for only a few years, and it can be painful for a laptop jockey like me to watch her at work. For instance, to print, she slowly drags her mouse to the toolbar while whispering to herself "file, print."

I don't want to intrude, but c'mon: There's a faster way to do that.

Alex Glazebrook has taught many older newbies the wonders of keyboard efficiency as director of training and technology at Older Adults Technology Services (OATS), a group that creates programs to empower senior citizens. And he assures me that everyone can benefit from learning keyboard shortcuts—as long as they have a patient teacher.

"You have to remember that people haven't had the luxury of growing up in a digital age," Glazebrook says. "You have to think about it like they're learning a new language."

It really doesn't matter how old you are. Students who learn a few keystroke shortcuts end up loving the speed and feeling of empowerment, Glazebrook says. He has recommendations for shortcuts everyone should know, regardless of their experience level. We've also added a few of our own.

This list is a great starting point, whether you're trying to speed up your own computer work or help a friend or relative gain new skills.

The Basics

There are dozens of keyboard shortcuts available for your Mac or Windows PC. And the two platforms share them. Most require only a swap between Ctrl (for Windows) and ⌘ (for Macs).

The simplest of these require users to press Control (Ctrl) or Command (⌘) along with just one other key. For instance: Ctrl or ⌘ along with P to print, C to copy, V to paste, and S to save.

But even these can be difficult to remember. If you're coaching a friend or relative, Glazebrook advises you to give him or her plenty of context. For instance, show how using the commands to copy and paste can help move text around in an email.

Printing out a list of keyboard commands can also be very helpful, especially the commands that require the user to press more than two keys at the same time.

New Windows and Tabs

If you're looking at a web page in a browser, you can open new windows by depressing Ctrl or ⌘ plus N. That's a fairly common trick for the computer-savvy, but many users don't know that it also opens new windows in Mac's Finder and File Explorer on Windows. (The same combination opens fresh files in Microsoft Word or Excel.)

Swapping out the N for a T will create tabs in the same window. And yes, this also works with Mac Finder and Windows File Explorer. Creating tabs helps desktops from becoming too cluttered with open windows.
Hiding Windows

Now that you've opened a lot of new windows and tabs, there's also an easy way to hide them, either to clean up the clutter or to preserve your privacy when a nosy co-worker ambles by.

On a Windows machine, the combination is the Windows key + M.

For Apple users, hold down ⌘ + Option + H + M.

Quick Search

Looking through drives and folders for documents is a time-consuming task, especially if you have hundreds (or thousands) of files.

If you know the name of the file you’re looking for, a quick Windows key + S on a PC will pull up File Explorer (or summon Windows's virtual assistant, Cortana). Pressing ⌘ + Space on a Mac opens a search window that lets you hunt through your entire computer, no matter what application you're in.

Searching for specific text inside a document or on a web page is slightly different. Use Ctrl + F on Windows computers, or if you're on a Mac, depress ⌘ + F. (If you're on the computer's desktop rather than inside a particular window, those key combinations will call up the Mac Finder.)
Screen Shots

When you see a juicy social media post that's sure to be taken down soon, you’ll be glad to have screen shots in your arsenal. They're even more useful for jobs like recording transaction numbers if you've placed an online order, or getting a snapshot of an online chat with a sales rep.

There are two kinds of screen shot. First, you can take an image of your entire work area or desktop. If you're running Windows 10 on a PC, press the Windows Key + Print Screen. On older PCs, you may need to press the Windows key + Ctrl + Print Screen or Windows key + Fn + Print Screen instead.

On a MacBook, hold ⌘ + Shift + 3.

The other kind of screen shot captures just a portion of the screen. On a Mac, press ⌘ + Shift + 4, and then use your mouse to drag open a box around the section you want to include in the image. The screen shot will be taken when you release the mouse.

On Windows computers, you do the same thing by opening the built-in Snipping Tool.

Force Quit

When your operating system hits a snag, it’s usually because of an unresponsive app.

When waiting it out doesn’t work, close the troublesome application by using Ctrl + Shift + Esc on a PC; this will open Task Manager. On an Apple computer, the key combination is ⌘ + Option + Esc, and the box that opens is labeled Force Quit Applications.

This is also a good way to see a list of apps currently running and using up your computer’s memory.

Went out to the beach yesterday to view the eclipse which was a bust here.

On the drive over the sands, I tried, again, to have a frank discussion with my guests, who came with surf boards and other ocean toys. No amount of brutal honesty about how plentiful seals attract plentiful great white sharks and neither requires much water to navigate was sinking in.

About 15 minutes after we unpacked the truck and settled into our space, this attack occurred. No humans were injured but the seal didnt fair as well. Needless to say, no one ventured into the water for the rest of the day.

Please heed the posts warning about sharks in any area. And be mindful that they do not need much water to navigate.



Please do not watch if you do not appreciate the brutal reality and beauty of nature.

I don't have a pic to post, but the thread name seems to fit this.

I am being topped by my GPS and it is without my consent, much less negotiation! When I bought the motorhome, the very nice person who was walking me through all of its functions at the speed of light asked if I wanted my GPS set up. It's electronic and I figured since he knew what he was doing, why not?

Here's why not. If your GPS is turned on apparently it picks up signals from the atmosphere and tells you out loud in the nicest way possible: "You are over the speed limit."

I don't normally speed, well except in cars on the interstate where 80-84 is my preferred speed if traffic allows. The dang GPS goes off when I am one mile per hour over the speed limit![B] That's on interstates, state highways and city roads. It doesn't accommodate for hills and I'm in New Mexico which [B]has a lot of hills. I talk back to it - a lot.

I'g gonna have to figure out how to turn off my GPS sometime soon.

LONDON — People lining up at a ticket booth under a Ferris wheel. Police officers questioning a skeleton figure as his dog looks on. Two new Banksys have popped up at the Barbican Center here, authenticated on Sunday by the British graffiti artist on his Instagram account.

The pieces, which refer to the work of the American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, appear to herald the start of a major exhibition of Basquiat’s work, opening on Thursday at the Barbican Center.

“Major new Basquiat show opens at the Barbican — a place that is normally very keen to clean any graffiti from its walls,” Banksy wrote alongside the black-and-white image of the Ferris wheel, which displays crowns — a popular Basquiat motif — instead of passenger cars. Under the image of the boy and the police, a reference to Basquiat’s 1982 “Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump,” Banksy wrote: “Portrait of Basquiat being welcomed by the Metropolitan police — an (unofficial) collaboration with the new Basquiat show.”

The artworks are perhaps a homage. Basquiat, who died of a suspected drug overdose at 27, in 1988, began his career as a graffiti artist before going on to become a celebrated art-world figure, acclaimed for his primitive, boldly colored figures, textual fragments and raw imagery that often referred to African history, slavery and colonialism.

The Barbican exhibition, “Boom for Real,” is the first large-scale British show of Basquiat’s work and will feature over 100 works as well as notebooks, photographs and archival materials.

Kara Walker has had enough.

Since her 1994 New York debut, at just 24 years old, at the Drawing Center, she and her artworks have been hailed as “exquisite” “skillful” “ingenious” and “triumphant.” She has won a MacArthur fellowship, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and has been widely praised as among the most important black artists working today. No pressure or anything.

Ms. Walker is, as she writes in the artist statement for her new show at Sikkema Jenkins & Co. in New York, “tired of ‘having a voice’ or worse, ‘being a role model.’ ” She is fed up with “being a featured member of my racial group and/or gender niche.” She also notes that her new work is not “activist” and we shouldn’t expect answers from her: “I roll my eyes, fold my arms and wait.”

Well, this is what Ms. Walker rolling her eyes and folding her arms looks like: a 151-by-191-inch work at the show, in sumi ink and collage, titled “Christ’s Entry Into Journalism,” which combines the imagined and the real as well as the past and present. My eye immediately went to the faces of James Brown and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Then I noticed Frederick Douglass giving a Black Power salute while holding the swastika-stamped head of what appears to be Donald Trump — an obvious allusion to the moment, a few months back, when the president seemed to believe Douglass, who died in 1895, was alive.

Elsewhere in the illustration, the president’s look-alike makes another appearance. This time he peeks out from between a Klansman’s legs. The Trump-like character wags his tongue while defecating. In another part of the collage, two black girls swing on a trapeze. Look closer and you see the body of a lynched black man hanging on the branch between them.

A white woman carries Trayvon Martin’s hoodie-covered head on a tray. A black man is attacked by a police officer in riot gear who holds a turkey leg in one hand and a cellphone in the other. There is a Confederate battle flag. An American flag. And an arm in a Nazi salute.

This is just one of her pieces in a show of 22.

While Ms. Walker’s work has always reflected the realities of black America, it has typically focused on the past, particularly the slavery of African-Americans. Never has she so blatantly illustrated the modern.

That is why the dissonance between her canvases and her statement has rubbed many people the wrong way. One person said the statement wasn’t “incredibly innovative or interesting or even resistant.” Another called it “foolish.” Nell Painter, an acclaimed historian-turned-painter, saw a paradox in being “tired of being a role model, but still making art about slavery.” One critic even suggested that if Ms. Walker is sick of her platform, she should “sit down.”

The outrage is tediously predictable — and of a piece with the debate that has flared over the political responsibility of artists and celebrities since the election of Donald Trump. Richard Prince disavowed an image he created of Ivanka Trump years ago and returned the money he got from selling it. In January, the artist Christo abandoned a project he’d worked on for over 20 years because it was on federal land and he couldn’t condone working to the benefit of the current government. Meryl Streep was greeted with hosannas for her outspoken criticism of the president; Taylor Swift’s silence has been condemned.

Ms. Walker gets all this — perhaps better than most, given that her work has long been criticized by prominent artists, black and white, who say it is reductive. In 1997, the black artist Betye Saar led a letter-writing campaign against Ms. Walker’s work, the same year that Howardena Pindell, another black artist, said that Ms. Walker “consciously or unconsciously seems to be catering to the bestial fantasies about blacks created by white supremacy and racism.” Two years later, Ms. Saar said that Ms. Walker’s art was “revolting and negative and a form of betrayal to the slaves, particularly women and children” and that “it was basically for the amusement and the investment of the white art establishment.” As Ms. Walker wryly put it in an interview with New York magazine in April: “We’re in too much of a celebrity culture, but at least that means I can be a disappointment to others.”

Her finger-wagging critics are missing the point when they go after her artist statement, which is nothing less than a big middle finger to our current culture of flame wars and empty words. Her statement is another way of saying: Ignore the hot air. Open your eyes and look at the work. The work is saying something strong and clear. It said to this viewer that this country is sick and perhaps we congratulated ourselves too much and too early for moving forward. Progress can so quickly crumble into chaos.

If you do open your eyes, you will be schooled by a modern master on American history, racism, aesthetics and politics. It’s far more powerful than any artist statement.

With each passing day, a new level of deplorableness. Is that a word? I do not care.

So, to save any level of sanity I hold dear, I personally need humor, dark seems to alleviate the tension best. trump needs to read letters from Abraham Lincoln to fallen soldiers to see how it is done. President Lincoln, in the maelstrom of his own grief losing two sons, found words to alleviate the pain, if only for a moment to the daughter of a General who was killed in war.

Terrion Pouncy remained at Christ Hospital recovering from his injuries on Thursday, missing a bond hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse on two counts of armed robbery, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.

Pouncy was arrested at the Oak Lawn hospital not long after he was found slumped on the steps of a home across the street from a West Pullman restaurant that Chicago Police say he robbed at gunpoint about 6 a.m. on Halloween.

The Pantone Color Institute, which helps makers of products select color for designs, announced this week that it chose to paint the coming year Ultra Violet, a purple-highlighter shade.

So why purple?

It’s “the most complex of all colors,” Leatrice Eiseman, the institute’s executive director, told The New York Times. “Because it takes two shades that are seemingly diaåmetrically opposed — blue and red — and brings them together to create something new.”

The word Ms. Eiseman used in her description of purple, “complex,” shares a root with “complicit,” which Dictionary.com selected as the word of the year for 2017. But where “complicit” has dark undertones, “complex” promises hope with its mysteriousness. We may welcome that after a year steeped in uncovering sexual-harassment complicity.

In ancient times, coveted purple dye was made from the mucus of sea snails in the Phoenician city of Tyre, according to a 2015 report in The Guardian.

Tyre engaged in trade with Jerusalem, that long-prized city that again finds itself in the news. The biblical Lydia was a seller of purple.

Historically, purple has been highly valued, driven by its burdensome production and its association with wealth, power and royalty. Do Prince Harry and his fiancée, Meghan Markle, know that it is said that in the 16th century Queen Elizabeth I of England didn’t permit anyone but close relatives of the royal family to wear purple?

In 1856, a British chemist named William Henry Perkin made the color more accessible to commoners when he patented a process for synthetic purple, which he achieved as he was trying to concoct a treatment for malaria.

The Purple Heart is awarded to United States Armed Forces members who are wounded in action (or in their name to their next of kin if they are killed). Purple has also been worn for mourning in some cultures; fans of Prince, no doubt, celebrate that he used the color as an exclamation point. Gucci and other fashion designers of recent collections already have, too.

But the hue can also be an ominous symbol: The National Weather Service added two shades of purple to map Hurricane Harvey’s rains this year.

And the N.W.S. turned to it to indicate “extreme fire danger” in Southern California, where fires have been raging and conditions have pushed past red.

On the other hand, rather than a warning, the color is an invitation to many who practice mindfulness, that movement that trains your mind on the present moment. An internet search will show the movement’s fondness for the color, which has often been connected with meditation (even when your flight is delayed) and spirituality.

The Pantone Color Institute has been choosing a color of the year since 2000 (Rose Quartz — think millennial pink — shared the title with Serenity blue in 2016, and Greenery was the choice for 2017). For 2018, Ms. Eiseman said, “We wanted to pick something that brings hope and an uplifting message.”

Some makeup aficionados might add “allurement” to purple’s benefits. Kylie Jenner introduced her purple palette this fall.

But the color isn’t for everyone.

Diametrically opposed, you might say. Still, how a color so rare in nature went viral on the planet is a mystery in itself. Was it in spite of, or because of, its rarity? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Purple catches the eye, setting off butterflies in the stomach or mild upset — we can’t ignore its presence. We may never know why, unless we ask a purple unicorn.

PITTSBURG, Kan. — The superhero that Julie Huston identifies most closely with is Batman, who struggled through his childhood as Bruce Wayne but grew into adulthood wanting to help others.

Huston views herself the same way. She has dedicated her time and resources to helping members of the LGBT community after struggling to understand her own sexuality as a teenager, and she has commemorated her link with the Caped Crusader with a tattoo on her wrist.

Huston, 33, is now being recognized in honor of another superhero — she has received the inaugural Wonder Woman Award given by the Southeast Kansas Chapter of the National Organization for Women. She was selected for the award because of her commitment to advancing LGBT rights and ending domestic violence, local NOW members said.

“There are so many women working with various organizations and individually to improve women's and children's lives in Southeast Kansas,” said Lyn Schultze, a co-coordinator of the group, in a statement. “We wanted to honor one of them. Julie Huston, a warrior for the LGBTQ community, is a great choice for our first Wonder Woman Award.”

Providing safe spaces

Huston, a Farmers Insurance agent in Pittsburg, said she is humbled to have been chosen as the first Wonder Woman of the region. A graduate of Pittsburg State University, where she wrote her thesis on sexuality, she was active with the gay/straight alliance there, and she frequently shares her personal coming-out story to help others in the LGBT community.

The owner of an office on North Broadway up until about a week ago, Huston tried to ensure that her business was a safe space for anyone who needed to talk. She records videos of herself on her cellphone, talking about her personal struggles with being gay, and posts them to her business' Facebook page. Her motto is "Be the person you needed when you were younger," and she is determined to be the listening ear for LGBT youth that she didn't have when she was a teen.

"I suffer from depression and anxiety as well, and I know sometimes you just need somebody," she said. "It was very important to reach out and let those people know that they could come to me."

As the 2017 award winner, Huston was honored with a plaque and a $200 donation to the charity of her choice. She selected The Trevor Project, a national organization that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBT youth through its round-the-clock hotline, 1-866-488-7386, and text messaging and online services.

Huston said the organization is "near and dear" to her heart because it attempts to reach young people who are grappling with their sexuality at the time of their lives when they might be the most confused or distressed. Nothing like it existed when she was younger.

"When I was that age I would have rather ended my life than face the truth" about her sexuality, she said. "It's a horrible feeling. ... I want to get these kids when they're younger and let them know they're OK. There are a lot of people here for them."

Promoting equal rights

Members of the Southeast Kansas NOW group, which launched in 2010, said they created the Wonder Woman Award for 2017 after hearing about a NOW chapter elsewhere in Kansas that offered a similar type of recognition for its community. The award was created locally to honor a woman in Southeast Kansas who works to uphold feminist ideals, said Deborah McGeorge, who serves as the group's secretary.

"We thought (the award) would be a great way to highlight the good work so many local women are doing, often quietly and behind the scenes, and how much they contribute to our community," she said.

At its core, feminism is a movement for the social, political and economic equality of all genders, McGeorge said. The Southeast Kansas chapter takes the movement a step further by focusing on six specific areas: constitutional equality, reproductive rights and justice, racial justice, LGBTQ rights, ending violence against women and economic justice.

Huston said her goals include establishing a support group for members of the local LGBT community, perhaps through a community health center, and creating a program in middle and high schools to partner LGBT or questioning youth with adults who can help them through their teenage years.

"It just seems natural to me" to help people, she said. "I just hope somebody somewhere is getting my message."
