Beware in the Bayou: Alligators and Crocodiles Can Climb

You might think of crocodiles lurking in the water or perhaps sunning themselves on a riverbank, but it turns out these toothy reptiles’ domain extends to the upper branches of trees.

A new study in Herpetology Notes documents the surprisingly common tree-climbing behavior in crocodiles and their close cousins, alligators. Even without any special anatomic adaptations for gripping branches, crocodiles often make their way up trees, sometimes going as high as the crown and out onto large limbs.

Vladimir Dinets, a research assistant professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and lead author on the paper, said it didn’t occur to him to look for crocodiles overhead. But in the course of researching their natural behaviors, he and his colleagues noticed a number of the animals in trees and became curious. On three continents—North America, Africa, and Australia—they observed four different species climbing trees.

Dinets and his fellow researchers combed the scientific literature but found only three scientific reports describing tree-climbing crocodiles, yet they discovered several anecdotal accounts by people living near crocodilian habitat.

“People who work or live around crocodiles knew about this behavior,” says Dinets. “It’s really common, but nobody outside the crocodile research community was aware of it.”

But, he says, “There’s no reason to think this behavior is new. In fact, there is some evidence that some extinct crocodilians were even more adapted to climb trees than the species alive today.”

The researchers believe the climbing is driven by two factors: thermoregulation and surveillance of the environment. Crocodiles took to the trees most frequently in areas where there were few places to bask on the ground, suggesting that the behavior is a means for regulating body temperature. And the reptiles were quick to fall or jump into the water if the researchers approached them. This skittish response implies they climb to gain a better perspective of potential threats and prey.

Christopher Gomez, an alligator hunting guide in Louisiana, says that though he’s never seen an alligator up a tree, the behavior doesn’t surprise him. “They’re really fast and maneuverable on land,” he says. “And knowing that they’re strong enough to take down large prey and drag them underwater, I’d say they’re strong enough to climb trees.”

Although crocodilians have an ancient lineage, dating back to the time of the dinosaurs, and are well known to humans, they’re still surprising us. In 2013, Dinets and his colleagues reported that alligators and crocodiles use sticks as lures to attract birds looking for nesting material. The reptiles lie in the water beneath bird colonies with sticks resting on their noses, ready to snap when a bird gets too close.

The cleverness and ingenuity of this all is what I find truly disturbing.

I have a trip planned (one of those bucket list things) in which I will kayak through the Everglades and take photographs. I was concerned about the regular stuff; you know, the spiders as big as my face, the mosquitoes with West Nile Virus, and the giant, non-native snakes.

This is a thought that might have rambled a bit.. so bear with me. I was sitting in my car at a stop light waiting to make a left turn so I might go home. I got the green arrow and I thought "Haha you suckers I get to go first!" Like I had won some big prize. Which I hadn't because it is just the way that light is programmed. But it made realize how dispicable of a thought that was towards others, even if they are not actually suffering that I can see. This is what happens when you read books like Eat, Pray, Love. Which in essence is a good thing because it makes you think and question yourself and your actions. So now I am wondering how many times a day I have these spiteful mean thoughts against humankind (no I am not saying I am not human, quite to the contrary) So I am going to try to be more self aware and change my thinking. Be more compassionate and considerate. hey I am human I know this will not be easy. I am sure I will curse someone about their terrible driving habits because I always think I am better driver than everyone else. But really who will it hurt to try to have nice thoughts instead of negative thoughts all the time.

This year I intend to plant zinnia flowers. My grandmother always had them going on in the warm months.

It took 2 years for me to get calla lily flowers from the bulbs I purchased. After being successful with the callas, time to move to something different.

I loved my grandmother so much. She was a great woman. I will plant the zinnias in honor of her.

I'm not really all that fond of flowers but it will be an interesting little outdoor side project.

I have the seeds and watched some youtube growing instructionals. Intend to germinate them this weekend. As I understand, it will be 5 to 10 days from germination date before I can put them in the ground.

I'll post along the way about how this little endeavor rolls out. Should be a stroll in the park, right?

True, a gay couple would be judged more harshly for making out in a restaurant, than a straight couple, but honestly I don't want to see anyone, straight or gay, making out in a restaurant where I'm having a meal. Yes Ginger, thanks. All I'm really saying is that sometimes I figure we are beginning to forget how to form and articulate our own views, our own humour, as we increasingly use these "pre-fab" sayings: the way we pick items off a menu...sentiments off a Hallmark Card, humour off a bumper sticker.

All of this is not to say there isn't some wonderful, insightful humour to be had in a great cartoon (The New Yorker is renowned for those) but sometimes I think that our own takes can be just as dead-on-funny or profound and I suppose that I admire those original thoughts and efforts more. Not everyone can write well or wants to, but I do love seeing an original well turned short phrase and I wish more of us made that effort before we lose the skill altogether.

At a time when it was believed that women were not physiologically capable of running marathon distances and the longest sanctioned women’s race was 1.5 miles, Bobbi Gibb challenged the prejudices and became the first woman ever to run the Boston Marathon.

Refused an entry application to the prestigious men’s division race, she decided to run anyway. She felt certain that once people knew that women could run these distances, the race would open up to women. She knew that if she could disprove this false belief, she would throw into doubt all the other false beliefs about women that had served for so long to deny women opportunities in many walks of life.

She hid in the bushes near the start, wearing her brother’s Bermuda shorts and a blue hooded sweatshirt. When the starting gun fired, she eased into the middle of the pack. The men around her quickly realized that she was a woman, and to her great relief, they were supportive.

When she removed the hot and constricting sweatshirt, everyone could see that she was a woman, and to her surprise, the crowd cheered. The press saw a story in the making. A local radio station broadcast her progress along the route.

She ran all the way to Boston and crossed the finish line in three hours, twenty-one minutes and forty seconds, ahead of two thirds of the men. Her feat, which was front-page headlines, astounded the world and was a pivotal event that helped to change social awareness and drew attention to running as a way of life for everyone.

In 1996, the Boston Athletic Association officially recognized her three wins in 1966, 1967 and 1968, and her name was inscribed with the names of the other winners on the Marathon Memorial in Copley Square, Boston.

It was not until 1972, when the Amateur Athletic Association changed the rules governing sports, that an officially sanctioned women’s division race opened in Boston. Until that time, all women were running in the yet to be sanctioned women’s division Boston Marathon. This era is now referred to as the pre-sanctioned era. Sara Mae Berman was the pre-sanctioned women’s winner in 1969, 1970 and 1971. Nina Kuscsik was the first women’s winner of the officially sanctioned women’s division in 1972.

I have been watching the anniversary news stories of the Boston Marathon bombing and what so many people have done to rebound. My best friend of 40 years has a daughter who lived in the vicinity of the bombings—two blocks away. Fortunately, her daughter with her fiancé left days before the bombing last year. Shaken by being so close to that tragedy, I cannot imagine what many have gone through.

I'm moved by stories and accounts of the injured who have recovered, the police work in Boston and the courage of all the people who have fought back to keep Boston Strong! Run free...and never look back.

Some where in the past 30 yrs I thought computers and electronics was suppose to SAVE THE TREES. If so then why are receipts now wider and longer than they were before computers and electronics? They have ads and coupons and chances to win if you call this number or sign up for this or that on them. How is this saving the trees?

Not only receipts, but even at work. Oh make sure you make/keep a hard copy of that. We still make a hard copy of our workbook for the day not just one copy but 6 copies, with multiple pages. I'm not a tree hugger but geez I can't believe all the paper I see wasted daily.

"When given an opportunity to apologize for his Prop 8 donation after it got attention earlier this month, a week after he was named CEO, Eich refused, and even implied to The Guardian that he and people like him were an asset at the company since Mozilla is global and anti-gay regimes are prevalent around the world, using the example of Indonesia. He refused to comment to The Guardian on his support of Pat Buchanan, a man who's been accused of making anti-Semitic remarks as well and engaged in diminution of the Holocaust, in addition to attacks on other groups. When you can't take back having supported Pat Buchanan and other virulently anti-gay politicians, there's only word for you: bigot.
