The Richat Structure is a geographic landmark in the Sahara desert (Mauritania) that resembles a “bulls-eye” with a diameter of ~50 km. It is popularly referred to as “The Eye of Africa”.

The formation of this structure initially was attributed to a meteorite impact due to its resemblance to a crater.
Geologists now theorize that the structure is a result of different types of rocks being eroded at different rates of erosion.
This theory "holds water" as igneous rocks within the structure are more resistant to erosion than the host sedimentary rocks.

The age of sedimentary rocks that surround Richat range in age from Late Proterozoic (2.5 billion years) to Ordovician (480 million years).

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80′s arrived at the hospital to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am. The nurse took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound. On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.
While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor’s appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her health.
He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer’s Disease. As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late.
He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now. I was surprised, and asked him, ‘And you still go every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?’
He smiled As he patted my hand and said, ‘She doesn’t know me, but I still know who she is.’

This site was made famous by Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who declared it one of the top ten scuba diving sites in the world. In 1971, he brought his ship, the Calypso, to the hole to chart its depths. Investigations by this expedition confirmed the hole's origin as typical karst limestone formations, formed before rises in sea level in at least four stages, leaving ledges at depths of 21 m (69 ft), 49 m (161 ft), and 91 m (299 ft). Stalactites were retrieved from submerged caves, confirming their previous formation above sea level. Some of these stalactites were also off-vertical by 5° in a consistent orientation, thus indicating that there had also been some past geological shift and tilting of the underlying plateau, followed by a long period in the current plane.

Initial measured depth of Great Blue Hole was 125 m (410 ft) which is the most often cited depth up to this day. An expedition by the Cambrian Foundation in 1997 measured the hole's depth as 124 m (407 ft) at its deepest point. This difference in measurement can be explained by ongoing sedimentation or by imprecision in measurements. The purpose of this expedition was the collection of core samples from the floor of the Blue Hole and documentation of the cave system. To accomplish these tasks, all of the divers had to be certified in cave diving and mixed gases.

Canberra’s geological roots are reflected in many of its place names, and conversely many of its rocks reflect the local geography in their names.
The view in the photograph is of Black Mountain taken from Mount Ainslie.
Both promontories are the product of geological processes dating back to the Silurian Period.
Black Mountain is formed of “Black Mountain sandstone” sitting atop “State Circle Shale”.
These rocks were laid down around 435 million years ago, when underwater avalanches (turbidites) raced off an ancient continent to the depths of a Silurian ocean.
Our view of them is from Mount Ainslie, formed of the “Ainslie volcanics” – about 425 million years old, these are ignimbrites –
sub-aerial avalanches this time, of burning hot ash and pumice erupted from Silurian volcanoes set in the shallow seas of the (then) continent’s margin.

So, happy birthday Canberra, and as you celebrate 100 years of civic and federal fun, raise a glass of local Riesling (one of the best!) and remember your ancient roots.

i grew up with stories from my maternal grand-mother and great-grandmother about the 'wee folk' that lived 'back home' in Ireland.
My grandmother would sometimes tap my left ear, which has (what i call- a spock ear) and tell me that i had a bit of 'fae' in me.

I grew up believing in them, and leaving a saucer of milk out for them at night! My cousins and I would spend hours trying to find fairies and elves! Good memories on this St. Paddy's day weekend!

My grandmother, Mary Farrell, born in Glengarriff Ireland, often spoke of the history associated with St.Patrick's Day, and so, like femmeInterrupted, I think about her a lot at this time of year...

St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain at Banna Venta Berniae, a location otherwise unknown, though identified in one tradition as Glannoventa, modern Ravenglass in Cumbria. Calpornius, his father, was a deacon, his grandfather Potitus, a priest. When he was about sixteen, he was captured and carried off as a slave to Ireland. Patrick worked as a herdsman, remaining a captive for six years. He writes that his faith grew in captivity, and that he prayed daily. After six years he heard a voice telling him that he would soon go home, and then that his ship was ready. Fleeing his master, he travelled to a port, two hundred miles away,where he found a ship and, after various adventures, returned home to his family, now in his early twenties.

Patrick recounts that he had a vision a few years after returning home:

I saw a man coming, as it were from Ireland. His name was Victoricus, and he carried many letters, and he gave me one of them. I read the heading: "The Voice of the Irish". As I began the letter, I imagined in that moment that I heard the voice of those very people who were near the wood of Foclut, which is beside the western sea—and they cried out, as with one voice: "We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us."

Originally, the colour associated with Saint Patrick was blue. Over the years the colour green and its association with Saint Patrick's Day grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick's Day as early as the 17th century. Saint Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish, and the ubiquitous wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs has become a feature of the day. In the 1798 rebellion, to make a political statement, Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on 17 March in hopes of catching public attention. The phrase "the wearing of the green", meaning to wear a shamrock on one's clothing, derives from a song of the same name.

I was in a pageant and for my talent I was suppose to sing Misty Blue and accompanying me on piano was my mom. After the first stanza I completely forgot the song. I had to make up words, hum, coo, etc...I couldn't repeat it if I tried. At the end of the evening I won the talent segment. I was so shocked. The super hilarious part was the next day in the newspaper. The report was spectacular. I was considered a true inspiration and a new Diva on the scene. FREAKIN' HILARIOUS!!!!:giggle::rofl:
