A New York City postal worker has been charged with a hate crime for harassing a Muslim woman pushing her infant child in a stroller, according to reports.

Dainton Coley allegedly approached two women wearing hijabs on Nostrand Avenue in Bedford Stuyvesant after 8 p.m. Friday, according to the New York Daily News.

Coley, who was wearing a U.S. Postal Service uniform, began cursing at her and making “anti-Muslim comments,” police said.

“You bumbaclot Muslim,” Coley said, firing off a Jamaican expletive, according to police sources. “I’m going to burn your Muslim temple down.”
Coley reportedly spit on the woman pushing the stroller. According to an AP report, Coley chased the two women into a nearby deli, where the situation did not improve:

As part of an ongoing project she calls On the Road: A Search for American Character, Smith has written and performed at least 18 one-woman plays exploring social issues around the country. Topics have included women tangling with the judicial system, the Los Angeles riots of 1992, and the uproar in Crown Heights following a 1991 car accident involving a Hasidic driver and two seven-year-old Caribbean American kids. Smith has been called "the most exciting individual in American theater right now." A MacArthur "genius" fellow and a National Humanities Medal holder, she was recently selected to deliver the Jefferson Lecture, the federal government's highest honor for achievement in the humanities.

For her latest play, Notes From the Field, Smith interviewed some 170 people—from California to her hometown, Baltimore—to inhabit characters based on individuals caught up in the school-to-prison pipeline. She's taken the performance from coast to coast, and will grace Baltimore's Center Stage on December 4 and 5. In the play's second act, which Smith calls an "interruption," she invites audience members to brainstorm potential solutions to the issues the characters raised. Smith sees theater as a unique way into social problems: "We're in the presence of one another. It's not like we can start texting or doing our taxes," she says. A live performance "manages to get undivided attention. In all the varieties of media, that doesn't happen so often."

The United States Postal Service is rolling out a new email initiative to make receiving snail mail more convenient.

The new, free service, called "Informed Delivery," will email "black and white images of your actual letter-sized mail pieces" to you by 11:00am EST on the day the mail is being processed for delivery, according to the USPS website. The service hopes to add larger items, such as magazines, in the future.

An "online dashboard" will also exist to house all images.

USPS insists that the service is secure. "The scanned images are of the external markings, showing only the address side (exterior front-side) of mail," it said.

The service is currently offered in the New York City metro area and parts of northern Virginia, with potential expansion in 2016.

In the beginning, the waves are 100 feet tall and crash over you without mercy. They come 10 seconds apart and don't even give you time to catch your breath. All you can do is hang on and float. After a while, maybe weeks, maybe months, you'll find the waves are still 100 feet tall, but they come further apart. When they come, they still crash all over you and wipe you out. But in between, you can breathe, you can function. You never know what's going to trigger the grief. It might be a song, a picture, a street intersection, the smell of a cup of coffee. It can be just about anything...and the wave comes crashing. But in between waves, there is life.

Somewhere down the line, and it's different for everybody, you find that the waves are only 80 feet tall. Or 50 feet tall. And while they still come, they come further apart. You can see them coming. An anniversary, a birthday, or Christmas, or landing at O'Hare. You can see it coming, for the most part, and prepare yourself. And when it washes over you, you know that somehow you will, again, come out the other side. Soaking wet, sputtering, still hanging on to some tiny piece of the wreckage, but you'll come out.

Take it from an old guy. The waves never stop coming, and somehow you don't really want them to. But you learn that you'll survive them. And other waves will come. And you'll survive them too. If you're lucky, you'll have lots of scars from lots of loves. And lots of shipwrecks.

For The First Time Scientists Replicate Image Of How Dolphins See Humans


Do you know that dolphins are able to see people? Yes, you will be surprised to know that they can see divers diving along them. For the first time scientists have been able to replicate what dolphin saw when being encountered by a male diver. They released the images of ‘what the dolphin saw’ that reveals that dolphin echolocation results in fairly detailed images. The findings seem to be interesting as it shows how dolphins see their nearby divers and they share such images with each other in what is previously known as marine mammal language.

Out of two images released by scientists, first shows the original CymaScope image and the other one is the computer enhanced version of the original images, which has been dubbed as ‘what the dolphin saw’. Jack Kassewitz, research team leader, said their team is speechless with their recent findings. He said that they can now speculate with confidence that dolphins may employ a 'sono-pictorial' form of language that they share with each other.

During the research which took place at the Dolphin Discovery Center in Puerto Aventuras, Mexico, Kassewitz had colleague Jim McDonough submerge himself in front of the female dolphin "Amaya" in a research pool at the center. McDonough wore a weight belt and exhaled most of the air in his lungs to overcome his natural buoyancy. McDonough used high specification audio equipment to record the signal, which was being handled by team members Alex Green and Toni Saul at the backend.

A little creepy but cool. We must look so alien to them compared to other creatures they encounter in the ocean. What I really find incredible, however, is that they have been able do naturally for millions of years what we have only been able to do with our most advanced electronics for only the past few decades or so, and they're echolocation abilities are still far more compact and effective. What amazing beings they are.

People who curse have a better vocabulary, according to a new study that looked at the theory that people swear only because they don't have the words to express themselves otherwise.

Not true, as it turns out, say U.S. psychologists Kristin Jay and Timothy Jay in the Language Sciences journal.

Cursers tend to understand "nuanced distinctions" in their language, which indicates increased vocabulary overall, the study concluded.

The researchers asked participants to cuss a blue streak, using as many different swear words they could think of in 60 seconds. They were also asked to name off as many animals as they could beginning with a specific letter. The stronger the swearers, the more animals they could name.

"The ability to generate taboo language is not an index of overall language poverty," the researchers concluded.

Bill Nye, the harmless children's edu-tainer known as "The Science Guy," managed to offend a select group of adults in Waco, Texas at a presentation, when he suggested that the moon does not emit light, but instead reflects the light of the sun.

As even most elementary-school graduates know, the moon reflects the light of the sun but produces no light of its own.

But don't tell that to the good people of Waco, who were "visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence," according to the Waco Tribune.

Nye was in town to participate in McLennan Community College's Distinguished Lecture Series. He gave two lectures on such unfunny and adult topics as global warming, Mars exploration, and energy consumption.

But nothing got people as riled as when he brought up Genesis 1:16, which reads: "God made two great lights -- the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars."

The lesser light, he pointed out, is not a light at all, but only a reflector.

At this point, several people in the audience stormed out in fury. One woman yelled "We believe in God!" and left with three children, thus ensuring that people across America would read about the incident and conclude that Waco is as nutty as they'd always suspected.

This story originally appeared in the Waco Tribune, but the newspaper has mysteriously pulled its story from the online version, presumably to avoid further embarrassment.

Netflix Just Invented Socks That Pause Your Show If You Doze Off.

Netflix may have revolutionized how we watch TV, but it's not stopping there.

Working again with Pittsburgh-based agency Deeplocal, the streaming company just released another do-it-yourself invention. This time, it's a pair of socks that detect when you've fallen asleep and pause your program so you don't miss out.

How do they work? Allow Netflix to explain:

We've based our sleep detection system on a popular method called actigraphy. An accelerometer detects when you've stopped moving for a prolonged period of time and triggers a signal to your TV that pauses Netflix. When it detects that you've dozed off, an LED light in the cuff of the sock flashes red, warning that the pause signal is about to be sent to your TV. Any motion will stop it from firing.

*A few of the hotels I've stayed in recently has this ability, when the sensors don't show movement for a certain period of time, the heat or the a/c returns to a setting pre-set by the hotel.

What a time of year. What a shitty little time of year... in some respects, while others are fine. Or will be. Give it time.

It's my little brother's birthday today - he would have been 25. He died a year and a half ago from cardiac arrest following two grand mal seizures. I applied self-care vigorously in the form of a hot bath (alone - no pets), a few repeats of "The Valley" by Jane Siberry and performed by kd lang accompanied by violent bawling, and doing the dishes by hand because the seal on the dishwasher is buggered. One of the highlights was the coffee with cinnamon, cardamom and heavy farm cream. Delightful.

The butch is away at work, and we're texting back and forth when her bus arrives at time points - her father, 5 hours away, is dying of cancer. The family there are pleading with him to go into hospice, but his ambiguous walk between dementia and lucidity are making the process very difficult. None of them are accustomed to care work. Husband and I will bring my brother's transport chair, some handy lift and transfer techniques, baking from my mother and as many presents as we've been able to scrape together this year. Presents. Fucking presents.

I was working again with makeup in the bathroom today, trying to find a way to use fairly limited products to cover the scar between my eyebrows. Being a femme with a facial scar that looks like Voldemort had a go at me is destroying me, but the plastic surgeons are backed up with boob jobs, I guess.

I'm unemployed after taking a certificate in judicial services. The money isn't flowing, and I have an admittedly unhealthy habit of determining my self-worth based on my financial productivity. I've been poor, and I've been very comfortable - it's hard to go back and forth.

The house is dark, and I'm nested in blankets, going through marathon government job applications and bilingual written tests. There's a cat in this assemblage somewhere, and the dog is on my feet. Any job that doesn't literally bore me to tears will do, I swear.

“Talking about charges for horoscopes, celebrity gossip, sports tips, wallpaper for your phone, and special ring tones,” said Federal Communications Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel at at State Capitol News Conference.

In an agreement with the federal government, Verizon has agreed to refund a total of $90 million to customers because of the practice that could have added $10 to $15 to your monthly bills.

Sprint has agreed to refund a total of $68 million, but in both cases you only have days left to file for one. “Consumers should demand refunds and they are due them as long as they do it by December 31,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.)

From now on, under the federal agreement, Verizon and Sprint must get permission from you before placing charges on your bill and must ensure that you are notified before the charges appear. Also under this agreement; they must provide information to you on how third party charges can be blocked on from your account.

To get the cash you must sign up by December 31st. file online.

Ok, this will not be a popular opinion *at all* but I've got to say it as someone who used to explain phone bills to customers years ago. I never thought I'd be defending corporations, but this is pretty much bullshit. Yes, phone companies are shady. I despise them...however, it is not the company's fault that somebody went online and agreed to unsolicited charges, especially since most customers will go months before contacting the phone company about the problem. The phone company is not getting any money from these scam websites that add horoscope charges to the bill nor is it their responsibility to hold a customer's hand so they don't make the mistake of clicking 'agree' when they shouldn't. The charges are not 'buried' on Verizon bills. I've seen many of these so-called buried charges and the fact is they may recur monthly for six months before the customer happens to notice them, but they were always in plain sight.

Do I care if the phone companies pay fines? Not at all. I hope they all fold for that matter, but customers need to accept a little personal accountability as well or they really will get ripped off. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the majority of customers I spoke to could barely read or didn't take the time to try to understand the bill before they called up a company to scream their bills. They were almost always wrong. So, do I believe them that they didn't agree to the horoscope charges? No, because they're lazy or they don't understand what they read even when it's laid out in basic English. True cramming is when sales people actually lie about the prices of the service they're selling, which is something I saw at CenturyLink. Verizon reps are required to read disclosures that the majority of customers don't want to hear. Customers will hang up when when reps are reading them the disclosures. Still, the bills are so detailed it's hard to misunderstand. Consumers need to own their mistakes and pay attention. I hate Verizon but there is also a situation where corporations are targeted for these kinds of lawsuits.

A friend of mine is seriously considering attending clown school in Florida. This person is a very talented writer and performer, so I don't understand why she wants to take that route, but it is apparently something she needs to experience artistically...

I started thinking about why clowns freak me out. I thought, at first, that it had to do with how they have often been associated with serial killers and nefarious deeds in modern times, but it turns out that clowns/jesters have been tied to dark humor since the medieval age, like the fool in King Lear who walks around reminding everyone that they're not as smart as they think.

Clowns are just scary! Also, I read that in clown school the most important lesson is not how to be funny, but how to accept public humiliation. They basically break you down psychologically. I don't understand the appeal...:(

Our solar system is one crazy place zooming along, forget the one dimensional, flat images of the sun in the middle with the planets neatly circling around it. *Full disclosure, some scientists have debunked this "Helical model" but oh hell, the truth is probably in the middle somewhere. Banksy has revealed a new artwork, sprayed on a wall in the Calais refugee camp called “the Jungle”, intended to address negative attitudes towards the thousands of people living there.

The work depicts the late Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, with a black bin bag thrown over one shoulder and an original Apple computer in his hand. The work is a pointed reference to Jobs’s background as the son of a Syrian migrant who went to America after the second world war.

South Africa's lion hunting industry to be hit by new U.S. protections which may reduce clients.

Sounds promising IF this is enforced. Trophy hunters (barf) usually are awash with unlimited funds for their "entertainment," so only time will tell. Canned hunts are atrocities against Mother Earths precious children.


South Africa's lion hunting industry faces new restrictions as a result of the decision this week by the U.S. government to protect African lions under the Endangered Species Act, according to conservationists.

Under the new provisions, American hunters bringing home lion trophies will need a permit, which will only be issued if the hunt is part of a science-based conservation strategy that enhances the species in the wild, the Fish and Wildlife Service said.

The new restrictions will discourage American hunters from sport hunting lions in South Africa, Humane Society International said in a statement. The organization said 620 of the 719 hunted lion trophies brought into the U.S. in 2014 came from South Africa. More than half of those were from lions bred in captivity, it said.

Trophy hunters pay between $18,000 and $24,000 to kill a five-year-old male. An eight-year-old male with an impressive mane may cost up to $75,000, according to hunting professionals.
